Today’s guest is Dr. Josh Gressel. Josh is a clinical psychologist with a private practice in the San Francisco Bay area and is a student of Jewish mysticism. Josh believes that most people experience envy every single day, and that most of them don't know what to do about it, except feel ashamed. But burying the feelings doesn’t help. Josh believes you can learn from your envy; and if you learn how to pay attention to it, it can even help you become happier and more fulfilled. Josh’s new book, Embracing Envy: Finding the Spiritual Treasure in Our Most Shameful Emotion, talks about some of the deeper meanings behind what we envy, and concrete steps we can take to use our envy to become better versions of ourselves. Embracing Envy!!! Envy is a universal emotion no one seems to have. That is, while every language has a word for it, few are willing to talk about their own envy or even acknowledge it to themselves. Josh Gressel wrote a book, Embracing Envy:  Finding the Spiritual Treasure in Our Most Shameful Emotion, to explore why this is so and what we might learn about ourselves from exploring our envy more openly.  The basic premise of the book is that the emotion would not exist unless there is some positive reason for it.  The book explains what some of those reasons might be. The human emotion "envy" is largely considered a negative, undesirable behavior - one that we wish we didn't have to experience, yet we all do. It doesn't feel good to be envious. When we do have feelings of envy our natural inclination is to disguise them - we don't want others to see this "ugly" side of ourselves. Today's special guest, Josh Gressel, Ph.D., author of the  book, Embracing Envy: Finding the Spiritual Treasure in Our Most Shameful Emotion proposes that while envy is the "Achilles heel" of our ego, it is also a door to our "personal underworld" that when opened can lead us to our personal riches. In Dr. Gressel's career as a psychologist he has attempted to integrate spiritual and psychological truths. He researched the topic of envy using that integration, and wrote Embracing Envy based on his belief that we would not have been created to experience this emotion unless it served an important purpose. He believes that envy forces us to admit to ourselves that we are capable of more than what we presently are. Today Dr. Gressel is here to share what he has learned about envy and to help us understand the upside of our own. Author Sumira Sarai, now sex advocate says "I wrote the book before Fifty Shades Of Grey, but I never released it, during the time I wanted to give people something to read in a poetic form, that would capture their attention, and give them something to think about. This book was intended to spice up the sex life of individuals, who needed help in the bedroom, and I think it has so far from those who have read the book. Since it's release I also wrote another book of poetry and released it free, "Safety Within Lust", which gives readers the opportunity learn about the precautions that should be taken before having sex, and how so many young females are constantly victims to lack of knowledge on sex."   Josh Gressel just had a book released by University of America Press (Embracing Envy:  Finding the Spiritual Treasure in Our Most Shameful Emotion) which talks about some of the deeper meaning behind what we envy and concrete steps we can take to use our envy to become better versions of ourselves Josh is a clinical psychologist and a practiced public speaker so I won't stutter on air.  Michaelbrent Collings is a #1 bestselling novelist and screenwriter. Embracing Envy:  Finding the Spiritual Treasure in Our Most Shameful Emotion with Josh Gressel Ph.D. Envy is a universal emotion, yet people are very reluctant to confess their envy of another. In Embracing Envy, Josh Gressel suggests it is our shame at admitting we feel inferior to another person that keeps envy so hidden. Through interviews with everyday people, reviews of mainstream psychological research, and lessons from wisdom literature, this book delves into how envy can be seen as meaningful and useful in our daily lives. Josh Gressel, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist in the San Francisco Bay area and a student of Jewish mysticism. He is currently at work on a second book about projection in congregant-clergy relations. He can be reached via e-mail at josh@joshgressel.com or his website: joshgressel.com.
