Episode Description:This is a From the Archive episode with Seth Godin.Seth Godin returns to the show for a conversation about making work that matters in a world obsessed with hits, rankings, followers, algorithms, and approval.James opens by talking about Seth's long body of work: Purple Cow, Linchpin, Graceful, thousands of blog posts, and Seth's then-new podcast Akimbo. Seth explains why he had thought about podcasting for years but resisted it because audio creates a different kind of intimacy. In print, the voice in the reader's head is the reader's own voice. In audio, the voice belongs to the person speaking.That intimacy made podcasting powerful, but also something Seth wanted to handle carefully.From there, James asks about the structure of Akimbo. Seth says the key to a strong solo format is assertion. What are you saying that is not obvious? What are you asking people to see differently? If you cannot make the point in 15 minutes, maybe you cannot make it at all.The conversation then moves into hits. Seth explains that platforms benefit from the long tail, but creators can suffer inside it. Amazon, iTunes, Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms need endless creators to show up with work, but they also train people to believe that if they do not hit number one, they failed.Seth's alternative is the smallest viable audience. Find the specific group you seek to serve. If it is 500 people, make something so good for those 500 people that they cannot help but tell someone else. That is more useful than chasing a vague mass audience or gaming a category so you can call yourself a bestseller.James and Seth connect this to Purple Cow. The book spread because Seth gave people a phrase they could use in a meeting. A “purple cow” became a way to describe something remarkable before people necessarily knew where the phrase came from.That is a key idea in the episode: every hit changes the people it touches. It does not simply entertain. It gives people a new belief, a new language, or a new way to see.Seth also explains the deeper forces under a lot of culture: fear and status. Fear keeps people from doing work that might not work. Status makes people compare themselves to the wrong people and measure the wrong things. The creator's job is to notice both, then act generously anyway.The episode closes with the craft itself. Our friend had a medical procedure to repair what the doctor called "a hole in her heart." Then he told her that everyone is born with a hole in their heart. That got my attention. Really? I called a longtime friend of mine who is a highly experienced and respected heart surgeon. He told me that before we are born, there's a hole that is this passageway for blood to enter our pre-natal heart. In most people, and I'm glad I'm most people, the hole heals up within a few days after birth. But for a few, it doesn't go away, and it really needs to be repaired. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Hole in Your Heart." So everyone is born with a hole in their heart. Not just physically, but spiritually. But unlike that physical hole in your heart, the spiritual one doesn't go away unless you let the greatest physician of all fill that hole. That spiritual hole in our heart keeps letting us know that it's there through the loneliness that no relationship seems to remove. The emptiness that never goes away for very long, no matter what we do to fill up our life. The "what's it all for?" questions about life that make everything seem so ultimately meaningless. It's like there's this voice inside us that seems to be saying, "Something's missing." We keep thinking the next relationship will be what we're missing, or the next thrill, or the next accomplishment, the next spiritual experience, the next "toy," the next milestone. But every time we get to the top of the hill we think has what we've been looking for, we find there's another hill to climb. After a while, we assume that this hollowness inside, this hole in our heart is just how it is. The Bible describes King Solomon as the richest and wisest man of his time. And he had the resources to do it all. Here's his conclusion: "I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind." But just accepting that hole in your heart is ultimately deadly. It needs to be treated. It needs to be healed by the only One big enough to fill that hole in your heart; the God who made you to belong to Him. The brilliant physicist Blaise Pascal concluded that "inside every man is a God-shaped vacuum." The hole in your heart is there to tell you that you really need God and that He isn't there because of something that makes it impossible for God to live there - all the sinning you and I have done; all the wrong things. Until that's forgiven and removed, the God you were made for has to remain outside. In John 4:13-14, our word for today from the Word of God, Jesus is at a well, talking with a woman who has tried to fill the hole in her heart with one relationship after another. Jesus says to her, and to you, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst ... the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." Wow, those words, "Thirsty again" - that's the hole in our heart. "Never thirst" - well, that's the hole in our heart finally filled as Jesus erases every sin of your life with His amazing forgiveness. He can do that because He did all the dying for all the sinning you've ever done. It's paid for. Which means your heart can be clean today and the God of the universe can finally move in; your lifetime search over. But you have to reach out to Jesus. You've got to tell Him that you're done driving your life, and that you're trusting completely in His death for your sin. Would you tell Him today, "Jesus, you made me. You've got me. You paid for me with your life on the cross. I'm yours." He's alive. He walked out of his grave. He can walk into your life right now. Are you thirsty? He knows. And you have a kind and merciful Savior who's making a point of pursuing your heart to give you the water that will quench your desperate thirst. So drink well of that water. Remember that your Messiah is kind and he pursues your heart. Knowing everything you've ever done and loving you just the same. Live in the light and joy of him and drink well. Thirsty? This woman was, and she was willing to admit it. She wasn't too proud to admit that she was thirsty. Yes, teacher, give me this water, she said. She knew that she was dying of thirst, that unless something changed, she would die. After five husbands, she was dying inside. But Jesus offers her this living water. Water that truly satisfies. Jesus mercifully offers those who are dying of thirst living water, relief from the endless cycle of sin and shame, sin and shame, sin and shame, relief from our past, forgiveness. She says, he told me everything I've ever done. And although these words were not written, you could complete the statement with these words: And he loved me just the same. It was this radical acceptance and forgiveness from a kind and merciful Messiah that delivered her from her desperate thirst. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Christ is the treasure of Christianity. Listen, I don't know why you go to church, why you listen to this podcast, but if it's not ultimately because you want more of Christ, then chances are good that you're going to miss everything. Listen to me, there is a hunger and a thirst deep inside of you that nothing will touch, nothing will satisfy, except Christ...So here's the question I end with in this episode, "Are you willing to stop feeding at banquet tables where the main course is not Christ.  If it's necessary will you let go of the good to go after God? Are you thirsty for the gift of God?"

After a long walk on a hot afternoon, nothing else will do — your body simply craves water. You might try to push through or distract yourself for a while, but eventually that thirst demands to be answered. Whitney Hopler draws from that universal experience to illuminate something even more profound: the spiritual thirst every human soul carries for God. Psalm 42 gives it a beautiful and urgent image — a deer panting desperately for streams of water — and reminds us that this longing is not a weakness. It is a sign that we know where true life is found. The psalmist wrote from a place of spiritual dryness, far from the temple, separated from the worship he once knew. Rather than ignoring that ache or filling it with lesser things, he turned it into a prayer. Whitney invites us to do the same. The world offers endless substitutes — achievement, entertainment, the approval of others — but sooner or later the soul senses something is still missing. That restlessness is not an inconvenience. It is God drawing us toward Himself. When we let spiritual thirst motivate us to seek Him the way a deer urgently searches for a stream, we discover that He never ignores those who come looking — and that the refreshment He offers satisfies in ways nothing else ever could. Work, achievement, entertainment, and human approval can satisfy for a season, but only God can fulfill the longing at the very core of who you are. Spiritual thirst is not a sign of failure — it is an invitation. When you sense that something is missing even in a full and busy life, that restlessness is God drawing you closer. Don't ignore it or try to fill it with something else. Busyness is one of the greatest barriers to hearing God. Constant activity keeps us distracted from the quiet messages He is sending. Creating space for stillness and reflection is not optional for a soul that wants to thrive. Let spiritual dryness motivate you toward God, not away from Him. The psalmist did not let his dry season produce despair — he let it produce a prayer. A season of spiritual drought can become the very thing that drives us to seek the living water more urgently. Prayer is an opportunity for relationship, not only a list of requests. When we come to God simply because we want to know Him more, our faith deepens, our prayer life transforms, and we begin to experience the fulfillment our souls have been searching for all along. A Prayer for You Today Dear God, I am feeling spiritually dry and thirsty for You. Even though my life is filled with activity, something important is still missing. Only a relationship with You will truly fulfill me. Please meet me where I am and help me develop the longing described in Psalm 42, where my soul thirsts for You the way a deer thirsts for water. Draw me closer and motivate me to seek You each day. When I feel spiritually dry, remind me that You are the living water who refreshes my soul. Teach me to come to You not only when I need help, but because I want to know You more. Thank You, God. Amen.
