If a person wakes up in the middle of the night and wants to drink, he is not required to wash Netilat Yadayim. Many times, when people wake up in the middle of the night, they prefer not getting their hands wet, as this could – especially in the winter – make it difficult for them to go back to sleep. In such a case, it is permissible to recite the Beracha of "She'ha'kol" and drink without washing. The person may rely on the opinion that although it is forbidden to recite Shema or pray before washing Netilat Yadayim, reciting Berachot is allowed. This is the straightforward implication of the Gemara's discussion in Masechet Berachot (60b) about the morning blessings, as it appears to require reciting each Beracha as it is experienced – such as reciting "Poke'ah Ivrim" upon opening one's eyes, and reciting "Zokef Kefufim" upon sitting up straight, even before washing Netilat Yadayim. This is, in fact, the ruling of the Shulhan Aruch. Although we do not follow this opinion, nevertheless, one may rely on this view if he prefers not washing his hands before drinking in the middle of the night. He may recite "She'ha'kol" before drinking, and if he drinks a Rebi'it all at once, he recites "Boreh Nefashot" afterward. Hacham Ovadia Yosef cites those who claim that the person in this case should think the text of the Beracha in his mind without actually articulating it, rather than recite a Beracha without having washed Netilat Yadayim. However, Hacham Ovadia dismisses this opinion, noting that we do not consider the silent contemplation of a Beracha akin to its actual recitation. Therefore, it is preferable to rely on the view that permits reciting Berachot before Netilat Yadayim. If the person slept unclothed, then he should first wipe his hands on something before reciting the Beracha, in case he had touched an unclean part of his body. If a person wore pajamas, such that there is no concern that he touched an unclean part of the body, this is not necessary. If one drinks without Netilat Yadayim in the middle of the night, he should try to ensure not to touch the water that he will drink, as one should preferably avoid consuming food or beverages that were touched by somebody who had not washed Netilat Yadayim. Summary: If one wakes up in the middle of the night thirsty, and he does not want to get his hands wet, he may recite a Beracha and drink without washing Netilat Yadayim. He should ensure not to touch the water that he will drink. If there is a concern that he touched an unclean part of the body while sleeping, then he should wipe his hands on something before reciting the Beracha.

Based on Ephesians 5:18, this series explores how believers can live a Spirit-filled life, and discover the keys to spiritual growth. Understand the importance of the Holy Spirit in empowering us to live according to God's will. This message emphasises developing a hunger for God's Word and a thirst for God's Spirit, as He imparts His righteous life to us through His Word & Spirit. These teachings are designed for those seeking to deepen their faith and live a more fulfilling Christian life. Matthew 5:6: “Blessed are those who HUNGER and THIRST for righteousness, for they shall be FILLED.” God's righteousness comes to us through His WORD (our spiritual BREAD) and His SPIRIT (our spiritual WATER). How much we are filled depends on our spiritual HUNGER for His WORD (Matthew 4:4), and our spiritual THIRST for the living water of His HOLY SPIRIT. The more we hunger and thirst for righteousness the more we will be filled. We are FILLED with the SPIRIT through DRINKING, but we can only DRINK as much as we are THIRSTY (John 7:37-38, Rev 21:6, 22:17). To be FILLED with His Spirit requires a spiritual THIRST. A major key to growing spiritually is being HUNGRY for more of God's WORD, and THIRSTY for more of God's SPIRIT. This is the KEY of spiritual DESIRE, which is determined by the VALUE we put on spiritual things. Our heart is made to desire, focus on and pursue that which it perceives as having the most value: “For where your TREASURE is, there your HEART (focus, attention) will be also” (Matthew 6:21). So, the more we value spiritual things, the more they will occupy our heart and the more we will DESIRE and pursue them. The more we HUNGER and THIRST for God, the more we will be FILLED with His SPIRIT and His WORD. So, our desire for God determines how much of Him we will receive, and therefore how much we will GROW spiritually: “As new-born babes, DESIRE the pure milk of the WORD, that you may GROW thereby” (1Peter 2:2). Spiritual DESIRE determines how much our soul is filled with His Spirit, which determines our spiritual growth. If our soul is filled up and satisfied with natural things, there is no room in our heart for God. So, we will not have a hunger & thirst for God, and we will stop growing spiritually. One of the most important things you can do is to put God's Word first and value spiritual things above natural things (a mark of spiritual maturity). Keep hungry for God's Word and thirsty for God's Spirit Our capacity for drinking (receiving) the Holy Spirit, is determined by how thirsty we are for Him. (1) Our HOLINESS is determined by how much the HOLY SPIRIT fills and possesses our heart, setting us apart to God, as we give our heart to Him (our vertical relationship with God). As the Spirit fills us, (2) He motivates and empowers us to live a life of RIGHTEOUSNESS in this world (righteousness is the outworking of holiness). So, we should DESIRE to be FILLED with His SPIRIT of RIGHTEOUSNESS.

This is the KEY of spiritual DESIRE, which is determined by the VALUE we put on spiritual things. Our heart is made to desire, focus on and pursue that which it perceives as having the most value: “For where your TREASURE is, there your HEART (focus, attention) will be also” (Matthew 6:21). So, the more we value spiritual things, the more they will occupy our heart and the more we will DESIRE and pursue them. The more we HUNGER and THIRST for God, the more we will be FILLED with His SPIRIT and His WORD. So, our desire for God determines how much of Him we will receive, and therefore how much we will GROW spiritually: “As new-born babes, DESIRE the pure milk of the WORD, that you may GROW thereby” (1Peter 2:2). Spiritual DESIRE determines how much our soul is filled with His Spirit, which determines our spiritual growth. If our soul is filled up and satisfied with natural things, there is no room in our heart for God. So, we will not have a hunger & thirst for God, and we will stop growing spiritually. One of the most important things you can do is to put God's Word first and value spiritual things above natural things (a mark of spiritual maturity). Keep hungry for God's Word and thirsty for God's Spirit Our capacity for drinking (receiving) the Holy Spirit, is determined by how thirsty we are for Him. (1) Our HOLINESS is determined by how much the HOLY SPIRIT fills and possesses our heart, setting us apart to God, as we give our heart to Him (our vertical relationship with God). As the Spirit fills us, (2) He motivates and empowers us to live a life of RIGHTEOUSNESS in this world (righteousness is the outworking of holiness). So, we should DESIRE to be FILLED with His SPIRIT of RIGHTEOUSNESS.

How do we hold onto a vision of goodness, healing, and new creation when the powers of the world seem so good at resisting—or even absorbing—every attempt to change it? In the final sermon of our Between Two Trees series, Jason returns to the closing words of Revelation and discovers something surprising: after giving the church this enormous vision of a world made new, John doesn't end with a strategy, a program, or a to-do list. He ends with a prayer: “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” Maybe the future Revelation imagines isn't something we can manufacture. Maybe the church doesn't need more cleverness, better programs, or greater effort as much as we need more of Jesus. Last weekend, I had the great privilege of presiding over a wedding at St. Joseph's, my old parish. The groom had once been one of my altar servers: a shy, quiet, somewhat awkward eleven-year-old boy. Now, more than a decade later, he stood before me as a young man in his mid-twenties, a competitive bodybuilder, and a bridegroom. And he had asked me to be the priest who would witness his wedding. How could I possibly say no?I said yes gladly. For this is one of the great and hidden joys of being a priest: to watch a human soul grow. We meet people at one chapter of their lives and, if God is kind enough to let us remain, we sometimes get to see the next. We baptize children who later kneel at the altar. We teach young men and women who eventually stand before us as husbands and wives. We plant seeds whose flowering we may never see.And sometimes, God allows us to see the flower. But there was another familiar face at the wedding. The groom's older brother was there—a man I had not seen since I left St. Joseph's in 2016. Both brothers had once served Mass with me on Sundays. They had stood beside me at the altar, close to the Holy of Holies, in the presence of that great Mystery where Jesus Christ gives Himself to us in the Eucharist—Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. But somewhere along the way, his older brother began to drift. It did not happen all at once. Perhaps it rarely does.He had questions. The same questions that have troubled generations of young people: Does God really exist? Why do I have to go to Mass on Sunday? Why does any of this matter? What if the Church is wrong?Questions are not the enemy of faith. But questions can become doors, and every door may open either toward God or away from Him. Eventually, the questions became too heavy. The boy who had once served Christ at His altar walked away. He left the practice of the Catholic faith and followed the current of the world, where so many bright things glitter upon the surface of the water. And yet the human heart is a strange thing. It can possess much and still hunger.It can taste pleasure and still thirst. It can win applause, accumulate success, pursue power, seek romance, entertain itself endlessly and still, when the noise finally ceases, hear the same ancient question whispering from somewhere deep within: Is this all?The wedding was the first time my old altar server had stepped inside a church in years. I was, of course, delighted to see him.During the homily, I made fun of his long hippie hair. Afterwards, he returned the favor by making fun of my male-pattern baldness. But then he said something that I have not been able to forget. Referring to the homily, he said: “Now that's how you get people back into church!” I do not know precisely what struck him. I do not know which word, which idea, or which buried memory stirred within him.Perhaps it was something I said about marriage: that it is not merely a human arrangement but part of a divine design. That God created us male and female for a reason, and that the mystery of our bodies points beyond itself toward something greater. That we were made for a love which is not merely emotional or pleasurable, but total, faithful, fruitful, and sacrificial. And that the deepest form of love does not culminate in the possession of another, but in the gift of oneself. Which is precisely where marriage finally points us—to Jesus Christ. For the Cross is the place where Love reveals its true face.There, the One who could have demanded everything instead gives everything. There, the Bridegroom gives Himself for His Bride. There, we discover that the strange hunger within the human heart is not an accident or an evolutionary inconvenience. It is a clue. Perhaps something in my old altar server's heart was pierced that day. What was it? I can only speculate.But I am certain of this: the human heart was made for more than this world can give. There is a thirst in us that no earthly cup can finally satisfy. We spend our lives reaching for things which promise happiness. We pursue success, admiration, wealth, pleasure, romance, influence, beauty, experiences, and every glittering thing the world places before our eyes. And for a little while, they satisfy us. Then the satisfaction fades. So we reach again. And again. And again. Why? Because finite things cannot fill an infinite longing. There is a hollow place within us that creation itself cannot occupy. There is an ache for meaning, a homesickness for something we cannot quite name. But perhaps the ache is not the disease. Perhaps it is the invitation.And this is the astonishing truth of the Gospel: we are not the only ones who thirst. God thirsts for us first. The One whom we have spent our lives seeking has been seeking us all along.The Father waits for His children. Christ calls to the wandering heart. And the Holy Spirit continues to stir within us that ancient desire for something greater than the passing treasures of this world. So, my friends, I want to invite you on October 1st to the Well. Come with your questions. Come with your doubts. Come if you have been away for years. Come if you no longer know what you believe. Come if you have tried everything the world has offered and have discovered, perhaps quietly and painfully, that you are still thirsty. For the answer to our deepest questions is not ultimately a proposition, an argument, or an idea. It is a Person. The God who thirsts for us first. Episode Description:This is a From the Archive episode with Seth Godin.Seth Godin returns to the show for a conversation about making work that matters in a world obsessed with hits, rankings, followers, algorithms, and approval.James opens by talking about Seth's long body of work: Purple Cow, Linchpin, Graceful, thousands of blog posts, and Seth's then-new podcast Akimbo. Seth explains why he had thought about podcasting for years but resisted it because audio creates a different kind of intimacy. In print, the voice in the reader's head is the reader's own voice. In audio, the voice belongs to the person speaking.That intimacy made podcasting powerful, but also something Seth wanted to handle carefully.From there, James asks about the structure of Akimbo. Seth says the key to a strong solo format is assertion. What are you saying that is not obvious? What are you asking people to see differently? If you cannot make the point in 15 minutes, maybe you cannot make it at all.The conversation then moves into hits. Seth explains that platforms benefit from the long tail, but creators can suffer inside it. Amazon, iTunes, Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms need endless creators to show up with work, but they also train people to believe that if they do not hit number one, they failed.Seth's alternative is the smallest viable audience. Find the specific group you seek to serve. If it is 500 people, make something so good for those 500 people that they cannot help but tell someone else. That is more useful than chasing a vague mass audience or gaming a category so you can call yourself a bestseller.James and Seth connect this to Purple Cow. The book spread because Seth gave people a phrase they could use in a meeting. A “purple cow” became a way to describe something remarkable before people necessarily knew where the phrase came from.That is a key idea in the episode: every hit changes the people it touches. It does not simply entertain. It gives people a new belief, a new language, or a new way to see.Seth also explains the deeper forces under a lot of culture: fear and status. Fear keeps people from doing work that might not work. Status makes people compare themselves to the wrong people and measure the wrong things. The creator's job is to notice both, then act generously anyway.The episode closes with the craft itself.
