Do you have any idea what it's like to live in North Korea? Let me give you a taste. You wake up early in the poor rural area you call home. It's mid-winter, barely 20 degrees Fahrenheit outside, and your only source of heat – a tiny woodburning stove - isn't nearly enough to keep you warm. You get breakfast and realise that you have one meal's worth of food that needs to last you for the next three days, when the rations are handed out. Thirsty, you gather ice from the local river to melt, because there's no infrastructure to provide running water here. You drink from and wash in the dirty water, before spending all day tending a local farm. It's 12 to 16 hours of backbreaking labour, because the farming industry here hasn't been mechanised, so everything is done by hand or with animals. As you walk several miles home, because there's no public transport here and you're too poor to own a bicycle – let alone a car, you find a dead rat in a ditch. You take it home to eat, because you're that hungry. As you're cooking, your front door bursts open, and a group of soldiers swarm in. They ransack your home, help themselves to what little food you have, and leave. You feel…lucky. Lucky?! Yes. Because they have the unchallenged authority to sentence you to years of hard labour in a work camp at any moment, with even less food, more work, corporal punishment from the guards… and worse. You consider doing what you have before - making a soup from grass and weeds, digging out the grain from animal manure, or even eating the manure itself just to quell your hunger. But you're too exhausted. So, cold and starving, you try to sleep on top of a rotten straw mattress, knowing you'll wake up and do this all again… and again… and again… until there is no again. If this was your country, you'd want to leave, wouldn't you? But what if you couldn't? This is the stark reality that a staggering 60% of North Korea's poverty-stricken population face currently, as the entire country struggles with major food insecurity issues stemming from severe economic mismanagement. But why can't they leave? And if you were in their shoes, how would you? Physical thirst reminds us of another, deeper thirst affecting billions—spiritual thirst. Across the world, millions lack clean water. Yet even more lack spiritual satisfaction. There is a profound longing in the human soul for meaning, purpose, acceptance, peace and connection with God.The Bible speaks clearly about this thirst: Psalm 42:1–2, Psalm 63:1, Matthew 5:6 In Isaiah 55:1–3, the prophet gives what has been called an “Invitation to the thirsty”:“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters… Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labour on what does not satisfy? … Listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you…”These words were spoken to exiles looking forward not only to freedom from Babylon but ultimately to the coming Messiah who would bring salvation to the world.1. Be Thirsty For God Because Only He Can Give True Satisfaction• God Can Give You The Satisfaction You Need; “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters…” (Isa 55:1)The water represents God Himself. In John 4:13–14, Jesus told the Samaritan woman:“Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.”She was searching for acceptance and meaning, yet her deeper thirst was spiritual. Jesus offered her living water—salvation, restoration and eternal life. Only He could satisfy the ache in her heart.The same is true today. Spiritual thirst cannot be quenched by temporary solutions.• Money Alone Cannot Satisfy“Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labour on what does not satisfy?” (Isaiah 55:2)The exiles were building lives in Babylon but losing spiritual focus. They were investing energy in things that could never truly satisfy.Money, popularity, knowledge and power promise fulfilment but leave people wanting more. As Jesus said in Matthew 6:24, no one can serve both God and money. A divided heart leads to dissatisfaction.Even immense wealth cannot fill the God-shaped space within the human heart. True contentment comes from seeking first the Kingdom of God.2. Be Thirsty For God Because He Wants To Satisfy Your ThirstGod is not distant. He is inviting.• This Gift Is For Everyone “Come, ALL you who are thirsty…”The invitation is open to everyone—young and old, rich and poor, regardless of background. Water in Scripture symbolises cleansing, renewal and new beginnings. No one is excluded from God's grace.• This Gift Is Free“Come… buy and eat… without money and without cost.”Forgiveness and new life are offered freely because the price was paid by Jesus, the suffering servant described in Isaiah 53. Salvation is by grace.Ephesians 2:8–9 declares: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith… it is the gift of God.”1 John 3:1 reminds us of the lavish love of the Father in calling us His children. The cost was great—but the gift is free.3. Be Thirsty For God Because He Will Satisfy You When You ComeThe key word in Isaiah 55 is “Come.” “Come… listen… that you may live.”God calls continually: Matthew 11:28, John 7:37–38 When we come to Him, He satisfies. He gives rest to the weary, forgiveness to the sinner, strength to the weak, and the Holy Spirit to empower.The question is not whether God will give—but whether we will come to Him.

A steam locomotive can burn through a massive amount of fuel in a short time. Wood-burning engines were fine for eastern railroads in heavily forested areas, but not practical on the Great Plains. It made more sense for those trains to burn coal, and burn coal they did. Depending on the size of the engine and its speed, a locomotive could burn as much as 800 pounds of coal per mile. The fireman had to constantly shovel coal into the firebox to keep the train moving.

The missionary spirt of the Catholic Church is driven by a sincere desire to deliver the truth for those poor souls who are without it.
