The American Messianic Jewish congregational movement as we know it today blossomed in the 1960s and ‘70s. These young congregations borrowed theological ideas from Judaism and from Christianity, but comparatively little work has been done to synthesize a truly original, authentic, relevant, and beautiful Messianic Jewish theology. Our guest today, Dr. Richard Harvey, is the only person in the world with a Ph.D. in Messianic Jewish theology, and in this conversation he discusses how far Messianic Jews have come and how far they have yet to go as they attempt to articulate their most deeply cherished beliefs in a rigorous and systematic way.

Episode 95.  What comes to mind when you hear the term mysticism? Perhaps you imagine a yogi sitting cross legged in meditation, or people sitting in a circle chanting. Several religions have mystical practices, Sufism in Islam, and Zen Buddhism, for instance. Whatever the particulars, they generally share a desire to become one with the Divine and valueing of spiritual rather than intellectual understanding. Today, my guest, Lex Rofeberg, has joined me to talk about Jewish mysticism, its history, core books, challenging concepts and risks to followers. As a rabbi ordained in the Jewish Renewal movement, he is both a practitioner and critic of Jewish mysticism. Lex is co-host of the Judaism Unbound podcast and the Un-Yeshiva – a link is in the show notes. He is also an active proponent of learning from other faith traditions. In this, he shares my philosophy that learning about other paths is beneficial and does not pose a risk to your beliefs or practice. Bio:  Lex Rofeberg (he/him) serves as senior Jewish educator for Judaism Unbound, a digital-first Jewish organization. He co-hosts and produces its weekly podcast, facilitates many of its digital rituals and events, and oversees the UnYeshiva: a digital center for Jewish learning and unlearning. He graduated from Brown University with a degree in Judaic Studies, and was ordained as a rabbi by ALEPH: Alliance for Jewish Renewal. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Lex lived for two years in Jackson, Mississippi -- working for the Institute of Southern Jewish Life -- and he currently lives in Providence, Rhode Island with his wife.Highlights: Embracing Jewish pop culture. Pantheism, panentheism and monotheism.Embodied worship and pantheism. Oneness and separation of the sacred and the profane.Hasidism, neo-Hasidism, and Chabad. The Zohar and Kabbalah. Reckoning with harm in by charismatic leaders.Social Media links for Lex: Website – JudaismUnbound.comBluesky – @lexaphus.bsky.socialReferences:Living Our Beliefs – Yusef Hayes episode on SufismLiving Our Beliefs – David Green on the Tanya and ChabadTranscript on BuzzsproutSocial Media links for Méli:Website – the Talking with God ProjectMeli's emailLinkedIn – Meli SolomonFacebook – Meli SolomonFollow the podcast! The Living Our Beliefs podcast is part of the Talking with God Project.

In this mini-series, Rabbi Daniel Rowe explains the deeper meaning and understanding of the Jewish festival of Chanukah and how it applies to our lives. This episode brings out the essence of the ideological clash between the Seleucid oppressors and the Jews of the Chanuka story. It addresses the curious selection of 4 areas of observance that were banned: Circumcision, Shabbat, Forcing us to use a calendar instead of witnesses for the New Month, and a seemingly futile atempt to ban the oral transmission of the Unwritten Torah. Why these? What is their common root? and how does the Chanuka story redefine our place in existence, and personal meaning and value? In this mini-series, Rabbi Daniel Rowe explains the deeper meaning and understanding of the Jewish festival of Chanukah and how it applies to our lives. In the previous episode we traced the roots of Chanuka (Hanukkah) back to the sale of Yosef (Joseph) in the Torah (Hebrew Bible). Rather than a mate rof simplistic jealousy, we discovered the dangers inherent in the charm, charisma and beauty of Yosef (Joseph). Time and again the idolatry of latre generations is linked back to the descendents of Yosef (Joseph). Even the assimilation of so many Jews into Hellenism and the internal schism central to the Chanuka (Hanukka) story is linked to him. But the brothers, family of Israel, got it wrong. Torah and Chazal (Rabbis of the Telmud and Midrash) make it clear that yosef (Joseph) is indispensable to the ability of the Jewish people to survive in exile, whether in Egypt, in the Chanuka story, or the exile we remain in today. This video explores the indispenasability of Yosef (Joseph), his beauty and charm, and in which we disciver that the light of Yosef is the very light of Chanuka! While premodern kabbalistic texts were not chronicles of historical events, they provided elaborate models for understanding the secret divine plan guiding human affairs. Hartley Lachter analyzes innovative kabbalistic doctrines, such as the idea of reincarnation and the notion of multiple successive universes, through which Jewish mystics sought to demonstrate that the misfortunes of Jewish history were in fact necessary steps toward redemption. Lachter argues that these works, mostly composed between the early 14th century and the generation affected by the Spanish expulsion in the early 16th century, enabled Jewish readers to make sense of the troubling misfortunes of their own time. Kabbalah and Catastrophe: Historical Memory in Premodern Jewish Mysticism (Stanford UP, 2024) uncovers the remarkable variety of ways that kabbalists deployed esoteric tradition to argue that God had not abandoned the Jews to the inscrutable forces of history. Instead, they suggested to readers that Jews are history's primary actors, and that despite their small numbers and lack of military power, Jews nonetheless secretly push history forward. For scholars of Jewish mysticism and medieval Jewish history, Lachter articulates how premodern mystical texts can be crucial sources of insight into how Jews understood the meaning of history. ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult

This episode explores the concept of the Qliphoth, tracing its evolution from Jewish mysticism to modern occult practices. It begins by distinguishing between the traditional Kabbalistic understanding of the Klippot and the reinterpreted Qliphoth in Hermetic Qabalah. We then delve into the historical emergence and theological significance of the Klippot in Kabbalah, particularly within the Zohar and Lurianic Kabbalah. The focus then shifts to integrating Qliphothic elements into modern occultism, especially within Left-Hand Path traditions. We examine the contributions of Aleister Crowley, Kenneth Grant, and Thomas Karlsson in redefining and expanding the understanding and application of Qliphothic magic. We highlight various practices, such as invocation, sigil magic, pathworking, and shadow work, that practitioners employ to engage with the Qliphoth for personal transformation and spiritual growth. In this week's study, I continue in Chapter 20; however I continue to discuss the First Resurrection. Before I get into the study, I talk about Rabbi Levi Slonim who gave an opening prayer at the White House Congress. I talk about his mentor Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, who in 1990 ask Benjamin Netanyahu, “to hurry up and bring in the Messiah”. This Rabbi is also a follower of the Kabbalah, which is a type of Jewish Mysticism. I then compare the writings of Freemasonry to Kabbalah. In our last study as we continue in Chapter 20 with verses 14 thru 6, we read about the First Resurrection. In this study, I would like to go into the First Resurrection some more.6   a thousand years. = "This is the first resurrection"; or, this completes the first resurrection. There is an Ellipsis of the verb in this sentence; and we may supply completes, having in mind the several resurrections which shall before then have taken place. Before I go any further allow me to explain what an ‘Ellipsis' is. El-lip´-sis. This is the Greek word ἔλλειψις, a leaving in, from ἐν (en) in, and λείπειν (leipein) to leave. 'The figure of speech is called, because some gap is left in the sentence, which means that a word or words are left out or omitted. The figure is a peculiar form given to a passage when a word or words are omitted; words which are necessary for the grammar but are not necessary for the sense.  The laws of geometry declare that there must be at least three straight lines to enclose a space. So the laws of syntax declare that there must be at least three words to make complete sense, or the simplest complete sentence. These three words are variously named by grammarians. In the sentence “Thy word is truth,” “Thy word” is the subject spoken of, “truth” is what is said of it (the predicate), and the verb “is” (the copula) connects it.But any of these three may be dispensed with; and this law of syntax may be rightfully broken by Ellipsis. Here, again, we have two things standing in related contrast, the "first" and the "new": i.e., the new, and the one that immediately precedes it; the former, and not the "first." For, the present "heavens and the earth which are now" (2 Pet 3:7) are not the first. For Scripture tells us of three, of which the present is the second. In 2 Pet 3:6-7, 13, we read of the first — the world that "then was" (Gen 1:1); of the second — "the heavens and the earth which are now"; and of the third — "a new heavens and a new earth," for which we now look. This (second of three) is what is called in Rev 21:1 the "first" of the latter two. Therefore this "first resurrection" is the former of the two mentioned in this verse: and not the calling on high of Phil 3:14, or the resurrection of 1 Thess 4:16-17. This special resurrection (1 Thess 4:16) must be carefully distinguished from that which is called the "first resurrection" in Rev 20:6. The word "first" in 1 Thess 4:16 does not refer to "the first resurrection" so called in Rev 20:6, but merely records the order of events, and simply states that "the dead in the Messiah" will "rise first"; i.e., before the taking up of either them or the living saints. The resurrection of 1 Thess 4:16 is not the resurrection of Rev 20:6. It was never revealed in the Old Testament; but was a special revelation made "by the word of the Lord" to Paul; and by Paul to the Thessalonian saints and to the Church of Yahweh.Have any questions? The section of the Torah (Hebrew Bible) called 'Chukas' or 'Statute' (Bamidbar/ Book of Numbers19-22:1) opens with the law of he red heifer, the paradigmatic 'Chok' or incomprehensible law about the purification process of one who has come into contact with a corpse. the sprinkling of water mixed with ashes of the red heifer contains a paradoxical law: in addition to purifying the contaminated, it also contaminates the pure! Why is this law given here in this part of Torah? Next we have some of the most tragic and at times incomprehensible narratives, including Moshe (Moses) striking the rock instead of speaking to it, for which he is barred from entering the land, and the story of the fiery serpents whose attack against the Israelites is thwarted by the seemingly bizarre erection of a pole with a copper serpent atop. This Shiur (Torah lecture) draws upon the works of Rabbi Chaim of Volzhin, Rabbi Yitzchak Isaan Chaver and others to show how we can make sense of these individually baffling episodes and laws, and uncovers the deep thematic connection between them and other parts of the Torah that we read about in this Sidra (weekly Torah reading). In today's lesson, we delve into the profound concept of the Logos, a pivotal term from John's Gospel that bridges Greek philosophy and biblical theology. We begin by exploring the Greek word 'Logos,' traditionally translated as "Word," and its deep roots in ancient philosophical texts, including its usage by philosophers like Heraclitus and later by the Stoics. We uncover how Logos was understood in the first-century Greco-Roman world—not just as a word but as a fundamental principle of rationality and order in the cosmos. The lesson highlights how the Gospel of John presents Jesus as the divine Logos—embodying reason, order, and the active principle that continuously shapes the universe. Join us to explore how this ancient concept enriches our understanding of Jesus as the "Word of God" and our interpretation of the scriptures. --------------------------------------------------- Support Fig Tree Ministries: https://donorbox.org/support-figtree-ministries Fig Tree Amazon Portal: https://amzn.to/3USMelI www.figtreeteaching.com Class Handout: https://www.figtreeteaching.com/blog/john-and-the-logos YouTube: https://youtu.be/2ZlABVTskyE Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7mh4v8e7FDwOoPhQd7bz7Y References: (Affiliate Links) From Logos to Trinity - https://www.adventistas.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Marian_Hillar_From_Logos_to_Trinity__The_Evolution....pdf (Amazon) Marian Hillar - From Logos to Trinity: The Evolution of Religious Beliefs from Pythagoras to Tertullian https://amzn.to/4bhRSTq Learn About Christian Mysticism: A GREAT Resource! Today's lesson explores the rich, dual-cultural context of the Gospel of John. Born and raised in Israel, the Apostle John later moved to Ephesus, a vibrant city in the Roman province of Asia Minor. This geographical shift profoundly influenced how John communicated his truth about Jesus and the kingdom of God. This lesson introduces how we can read John's Gospel through both a Jewish and Greco-Roman cultural lens. The Gospel of John is a thoroughly Jewish document proclaiming Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah and the sovereign King of Israel. Yet, John's narrative is not solely confined to a Jewish audience. His teachings also reached out to the communities in and around Ephesus, where the presence of various Greek deities permeated everyday life. In this lesson, we will examine how John communicates a Jewish message about Jesus as God's anointed Messiah while also addressing the diverse spiritual landscape of Asia Minor, asserting Jesus' supremacy over all gods. Our primary goal is to uncover how the Gospel was relevant to its first-century audience in Ephesus and what that means for us today. By understanding John's Gospel's original context and audience, we gain a deeper appreciation of its timeless message and its relevance in a pluralistic world. This session is crucial for anyone looking to enrich their understanding of the Gospel of John and its application across different cultures and eras. ---------------------------------- Support Fig Tree Ministries: https://donorbox.org/support-figtree-ministries Fig Tree Amazon Portal: https://amzn.to/3USMelI www.figtreeteaching.com Class Handout: https://www.figtreeteaching.com/blog/johns-original-community-in-ephesus YouTube: https://youtu.be/oQ3mYoyvJmI Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7mh4v8e7FDwOoPhQd7bz7Y References: (Affiliate Links) Learn About Christian Mysticism: A GREAT Resource! Now let's look at the Kabbalistic teachings of the Arizal, who exposed supremely high levels of the Divine reality. How does Maimonides' statement apply in this context? Only once the Infinite Light clothes itself in the highest sefirot of the world of Atzilut. Beyond that, there's really nothing to say. In fact, the highest level of the known spiritual reality is exactly equal to the lowest level, that of material action, in this lowest physical world, relative to the Divine Essence.

In the Gospel of John, scholars identify a foundational literary structure known as the "Mystical Way" or the "Mystical Path." This path represents the journey toward the ultimate desire of mystics—the profound union with God. John's approach to guiding believers towards this union is subtly integrated into his gospel, utilizing selective narratives rather than explicit declarations. For John, achieving union with God involves an enlightening process that bestows "New Life" upon the faithful. Followers of Jesus within John's community are encouraged to embark on this path, which promises a gradual but continuous drawing closer to God as the true essence of reality unfolds before them. ------------------------------------------------------------ Support Fig Tree Ministries: https://donorbox.org/support-figtree-ministries Fig Tree Amazon Portal: https://amzn.to/3USMelI www.figtreeteaching.com Class Handout: https://www.figtreeteaching.com/blog/johns-path-to-god Seven Churches of Revelation: https://www.figtreeteaching.com/seven-churches-of-revelation1.html YouTube: https://youtu.be/1Ljo17HH-Is Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7mh4v8e7FDwOoPhQd7bz7Y References: (Affiliate Links) William Countryman - The Mystical Way in the Fourth Gospel https://amzn.to/49Frv9d NT Wright - Following Jesus - see page 35 - https://amzn.to/49ntkYv Jewish Annotated New Testament - see notes (pp. 178 (Cana), 185 (Official's son), 186 (healing lame), 188 (feeding), 196 (Blind Man), 200 (Lazarus), Crucifixion (God's Glory). https://amzn.to/3Ot5cvu Learn About Jewish Mysticism: (Affiliate links) Rabbi Lawrence Kushner - Honey From The Rock - (my 1st choice!) https://amzn.to/497RIO9 Rabbi Lawrence Kushner - Jewish Spirituality: A Brief Introduction for Christians - https://amzn.to/3OppXbs Byron L. In this lesson, we embark on the first installment of our upcoming series, where we delve into the Gospel of John from a mystical perspective. The Gospel of John, often regarded as a mystical text, can be a source of confusion for many. In this session, our aim is to shed light on various aspects of Jewish mysticism and how they harmonize seamlessly with the Gospel of John. Mystics are captivated by the essence of reality and often seek to perceive, with the mind, the mysteries beyond our ordinary sight. During this session, we will explore specific Bible verses that are central to mystical contemplation. These verses often revolve around moments in the Bible where the barrier separating humanity from God is momentarily lifted. One such example is found in Ezekiel's first of two visions, as described in Ezekiel chapter One. The story commences with the heavens opening up, leading to a remarkable vision of the divine likeness on the throne—a likeness resembling a human form. This apparent paradox raises intriguing questions: How can the formless God possess an image resembling a man? Join us as we embark on a journey to demystify the mystical and reveal how John's Gospel communicates the profound message of who Jesus truly is. ---------------------------------------------------------- Support Fig Tree Ministries: https://donorbox.org/support-figtree-ministries www.figtreeteaching.com Class Handout: https://www.figtreeteaching.com/blog/gospel-of-john YouTube: https://youtu.be/5omWyxyfnLg Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7mh4v8e7FDwOoPhQd7bz7Y List of Signs from John - see either of the books below NT Wright - Following Jesus - see page 35 - https://amzn.to/49ntkYv Jewish Annotated New Testament - see notes (pp. 178 (Cana), 185 (Official's son), 186 (healing lame), 188 (feeding), 196 (Blind Man), 200 (Lazarus), Crucifixion (God's Glory). https://amzn.to/3Ot5cvu Learn About Jewish Mysticism: (Affiliate links) Rabbi Lawrence Kushner - Honey From The Rock - (my 1st choice!) https://amzn.to/497RIO9 Rabbi Lawrence Kushner - Jewish Spirituality: A Brief Introduction for Christians - https://amzn.to/3OppXbs Byron L. I then ask Jay about how his experiences in spaces like radical faeries gathering and Burning Man have impacted his spirituality and the way he communes with spirit. And, Jay shares a story that helped him realize that our full expression as sexual beings contributes to, is informed by and enriches our full expression as spiritual beings.
