Friends of the show Ryan Archibald and Brendan McElmeel are back to finish our discussion of the Byzantine structure of higher education institutions. We uncover the rot at that core of higher education and, guess what, it's the same rot that is hollowing out everything in America!
Brian is joined by old friend of the show Ryan Archibald and new friend of the show Brendan McElmeel for an exploration of higher education's Byzantine labor system. Will we find light at the end of the maze or will we be killed by the Minotaur of adjunctification and budget cuts on the way? Only one way to find out!
Munya & Brian are joined by historian and friend of the show Ryan Archibald to discuss the politics of travel. A free-ranging discussion of how the US security state came to see international travel and movement as a danger to be closely surveilled and policed.
Can HR be an advocate for both the company and the employee experience? Ryan Archibald, Director of Human Resources at Paul Davis Restoration of Utah, thinks so. Over the course of his HR career, he's seen colleagues fall prey to the dictator trap—when HR alone is the rule maker and enforcer. And how this approach fails every. single. time. We sat down with Ryan to hear about how HR professionals can be better partners to their leadership team—and operate as a trusted resource, even when you're an HR department of one. We also talked about: • How a friend's negative experience at work inspired him to get into HR and help people • How to avoid the “dictator trap”—and instead, be a caretaker of the employee experience • How to align the HR function with the expectations of your leadership team • Asking for help, especially when you're an HR department of one • Knowing your values (and communicating them) when others want you to cut corners
Ed Bus, played by Ryan Archibald comes for a visit. The boys go to the dark side of the moon and eat Johnny Rockets.

On this episode of Talking Late Night, Max sits down with Ryan Archibald, a veteran improviser who has performed and taught at Boom Chicago (located in Amsterdam), iO Chicago, and Second City and who is the current Artistic Director for the Village Theatre. As soon as Ryan saw improv for the first time he knew that's what he wanted to do. Not only was he an improviser at all three of those theatres previously mentioned, but he also was a teacher, coach, and director for multiple shows and theatres. Ryan performed with the Second City Touring Company and was on a resident stage in Las Vegas as well. After performing all over the world for many years, Ryan was hired by the Village Theatre in Atlanta to be their new Artistic Director, a role that he serves as today. Interested in taking classes or seeing shows at the Village Theatre? Check out their website here where, more than likely, you'll be able to see Ryan in a few shows! Thank you for tuning in!
