The Marlins remain one of MLB's most confusing teams this season: boring to watch yet solidly in the thick of the Wild Card race. Otto Lopez and Xavier Edwards continue to play like under‑the‑radar All‑Stars, Max Meyer is pitching his way into early CY Young buzz, and Sandy Alcantara suddenly looks revived. But injuries to Eury Pérez and disappointing performances from Marsee, Stowers, and Norby raise real questions about whether Miami can sustain a push toward meaningful summer baseball at loanDepot park.Around the league, Tarik Skubal's return is a major boost for Detroit, while the Padres are collapsing. The Brewers look like a legitimate contender, and the White Sox have unexpectedly energized their fan base. We wrap with an Omaha preview featuring first‑time College World Series appearances for Troy and West Virginia.

The conversation covers the dramatic differences between old-school and new-era Survivor gameplay, Jenna's frustrating experience on Season 50 where she felt isolated without any pre-existing relationships with castmates, and a wide-ranging discussion touching on books, cosmetic procedures, leaving religious upbringings, self-worth, and the double standards women face compared to men. His central argument is that minimalism isn't defined by sparse materials or specific harmonies; it's defined by how it uses time. Understanding that distinction impacts how we approach and hear the music, and what happens to this music when its originators are gone.We talk about that thesis, the line between minimalism and post-minimalism, and what it takes to build a life in music writing. We also take a detour into John Zorn's visual art.The musical excerpts heard in the interview are Terry Riley - “In C” (performed by Bang on a Can All-Stars on the album In C ), Philip Glass - "Music in Twelve Parts: Part 1" (performed by The Philip Glass Ensemble on the album Music in Twelve Parts), and Steve Reich - “Drumming: Pt III” (performed by Steve Reich and Musicians on the album Drumming).—Dig DeeperGuest and BookVisit George Grella Jr. at The Brooklyn Rail where he serves as music editor, and on The Tonearm, where he is a contributorSubscribe to his Substack newsletter, Kill Yr Idols,, and follow him on BlueskyPurchase Minimalist Music (Bloomsbury Academic, 2026) from Bloomsbury, Bookshop.org, Powell's Books, Barnes & Noble, Amazon, or your other retailer of choiceRead Grella's Substack post "Minimalism at the End" — the piece discussed in this episodeGeorge Grella Jr.'s previous book: Miles Davis' Bitches Brew (Bloomsbury, 2015) — part of the 33⅓ seriesKey ComposersSteve Reich — official websitePhilip Glass — official websiteMeredith Monk — official websiteMorton Feldman — WikipediaLa Monte Young — WikipediaArvo Pärt — official websiteLouis Andriessen — WikipediaJohn Zorn — Tzadik websiteKey Works DiscussedMusic for 18 Musicians — Steve ReichElectric Counterpoint — Steve ReichDrumming — Steve ReichDifferent Trains — Steve ReichEinstein on the Beach — Ictus, Suzanne Vega, Collegium Vocale Gent (VLEK, 2025) — the recording discussed in this episodeGlassworks — Philip GlassPanthalassa: The Music of Miles Davis 1969–1974 — reconstructed and mixed by Bill Laswell (Sony, 1998)Kind of Blue — Miles DavisEnsembles and OrganizationsBang on a Can — including the Bang on a Can All-Stars and the annual Long Play FestivalSō Percussion — Grammy-winning percussion quartetIctus Ensemble — Brussels-based contemporary music ensembleReferenced BooksOn Minimalism: Documenting a Musical Movement — Kerry O'Brien and William Robin (University of California Press, 2023)Kerry O'Brien and William Robin on The Tonearm PodcastThe Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century — Alex Ross (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2007)ExhibitionJohn Zorn: Hermetic Cartography — The Drawing Center, New York (February 7–May 11, 2025). He was durable and consistent, winning nine All-Stars and four NBA championships alongside greats like Larry Bird and Kevin McHale. But before Parish became the silent backbone of the Celtics dynasty, he was just a shy kid from Louisiana who barely knew how to dribble. In his recent memoir, “The Chief: The Story of the Boston Celtics' Most Enigmatic Icon,” Parish shares an inside look at his life story — from brutal 1980s rivalries in Boston to the personal controversies that complicate his legacy. Joe and Taylor kick off coverage of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 11 with Episode 1, “Breakdancing 2: Electric Rugaloo,” and before they even get to the queens, the conversation somehow spirals into Disney popcorn buckets, haunted mansion drink sippers, and the psychology of eating popcorn alone at Disneyland while holding collectible toys. It's the kind of chaos you've come to expect. Once the episode discussion begins, Joe and Taylor break down the entire Orange Bracket premiere cast including Morphine Love Dion, Dawn, Morgan McMichaels, A'Keria C. Davenport, Lucky Starzzz, and Mystique Summers Madison. They discuss which queens already feel like real contenders, which queens may be struggling to adapt to modern Drag Race, and whether some returning contestants were brought back for redemption… or nostalgia. The duo also dives deep into: Whether Morgan McMichaels is quietly producing good television in real time Why Dawn's elevated drag package still doesn't stop Joe from distrusting her The strange energy surrounding Mystique Summers Madison's return Whether Morphine deserved a Top 2 placement The awkwardness of the choreography rehearsal segment Why the episode itself feels oddly tension-free despite obvious shade La Toya Jackson as a guest judge and the lost art of 80s camp celebrity Whether the “Tournament of All Stars” format is helping or hurting the show Plus: Joe theorizes that Disney adults are funding a black market popcorn bucket economy Taylor explains why taking a season off from Drag Race may actually improve your viewing experience An unexpected sidebar about cigarette smoke aging drag queens And Joe nearly launches a conspiracy theory about production timelines before immediately disproving it himself At the end, Joe and Taylor debate whether the right queens landed in the Top 2, whether Morgan truly won the lip sync fairly, and pitch an entirely different All Stars bracket format that might solve one of the franchise's growing problems.
