Navigating the realm of art and comedy can often feel like walking a tightrope, especially when politics enter the picture. This episode features a conversation with Jason Seiler, an esteemed illustrator whose work has graced the covers of Time Magazine multiple times. Together, we uncover the nuances of capturing political figures in art, and the responsibility that comes with it. Jason shares his insights about treating his artwork as a form of recording history - a perspective that is both thought-provoking and reveals the delicate balance needed when dealing with political personalities. When Jason Seiler isn't painting, he's making people laugh. A personal anecdote leads us into his journey into stand-up comedy, spurred by encouragement from Steve Byrne who noticed his artwork for a documentary. Jason's first set at the Chicago Improv wasn't just a daring leap, it was a springboard for more opportunities. He shares the struggles he faced, his eventual triumph, and how Byrne continued to support him, paving the way for a remarkable career that blurs the line between art and comedy. We also delve into the challenges faced by content creators in today's world, and the courage needed to handle criticism. A bold statement by Jason about his video going viral, offers a masterclass in resilience and transforms our understanding of how art, comedy, and personal growth intertwine. This episode promises a deep exploration into the world of art, comedy, politics, and the surprising ways they intersect. Don't miss out on this engaging journey that spans from the pages of Time Magazine to the stages of stand-up comedy. JASON SEILER Jason Seiler is a Chicago based artist and standup comedian, and producer of The Breaking the Law Comedy Show! Originally from Green Bay Wisconsin, Jason moved to Chicago in 1996 and created a career for himself in illustration, painting covers for publications such as Time Magazine, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, MAD magazine and more!!! Always a comedian at heart, Jason had the pleasure of having the great Steve Byrne on his podcast, "Face the Truth", Steve invited him to try stand up for the first time and asked him to do a guest spot for him, at The Chicago Improv. I know, crazy right? Jason agreed to do it, the show went great, and he has since opened 5 more times for Steve, and the rest is history! His silly sense of humor, dry wit, and likable disposition, help illustrate stories and jokes drawn from personal experience. Recently named by Caroline's on Broadway as one of their 2022 Breakout Artists, Tommy is a sweet young man who started performing standup comedy in Chicago after realizing that a desk job with his Accounting degree wasn't as sexy as he originally thought. Tommy soon won the Laugh Factory's standup competition “Verified Laughs” and began playing clubs across the country. He has since become a paid regular at the Laugh Factory, Zanies, Skyline Comedy Club, Comedy on State, the Chicago Improv, and Caroline's on Broadway, among others. When he first worked with the late great(est) Louie Anderson, Louie was kind enough to say Tommy's set was “alriiiight”. It's been smooth sailing since then (lie). Along with his standup, you may know Tommy from the popular web series Roommates-In-Law, which he created with fellow comic Tim Smith. The series has gained a cult following online and amassed over 1 million views. This perfect blend is evident everywhere from his viral Pachelbel Rant, his observations on popular music, to his well-crafted original songs. Rob's act is accessible and he works with minimal profanity so there are few limitations on where he can perform or where his albums can be played. He regularly works comedy clubs and cutting edge venues in New York, as well as cruises, all-ages venues and corporate events. In college Rob found an outlet for his love of humor writing in the open mic comedy stages of greater Los Angeles. When Rob began mixing songs and music into his sets it was a revelation and the enthusiastic response was immediate. By the time he graduated (cum laude) he was getting regular booked and paid spots around L.A. Though music and a promising original rock band took Rob back to Chicago, he continued to explore comedy through classes at Second City and performing stand-up. He soon became a regular at the Chicago Improv and Zanies clubs, and started working the road touring clubs throughout the Midwest and colleges coast to coast. Rob has been a prolific comedian both on the stage and with recordings. From his first studio album Don't Crowd the Plow, which had a track featured on the Dr. Demento Show's Funny Five, to his most recent live concert album Rob P. Rocks a Jazz Club, which is getting a great reaction from fans and comedy outlets alike, Rob's albums have helped propagate and preserve his work. On stage Rob's wealth of material extends beyond his comedy music. He has staged three solo shows, presenting them in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles; he was a staff writer for the NYC-based sketch group Spurn for several years, he has written three one-act plays that have been performed in New York. Michael A. Cohen is a regular contributor for The Boston Globe on national politics and foreign affairs. Tommy Davidson is in the Chicagoland area and will perform at the Chicago Improv, Saturday December 22nd at 7pm and 9:15pm. Tommy joined Jonathan Hood to talk about his career in comedy, working for Fox on the hit tv show "In Living Color" as well as Fox NFL Sunday. Davidson also talks about the state of comedy in 2018 and much more. Davidson started his career as a stand-up comedian in Washington DC, earning an ardent following with sheer hard work in various comedy clubs. As one of the cutting-edge, young stand-ups, he was spotted by major concert promoters, who booked him as the opening act for A-list touring acts, including Patti LaBelle, Kenny G and Luther Vandross. It wasn't long before he came to Hollywood and was performing stand-up at a number of clubs, including the Comedy Act Theatre, where he met Robert Townsend. This led to his first national television appearance, with a starring role in Partners in Crime (2005) and was the conduit to Keenen Ivory Wayans, who proved instrumental in Davidson's career by offering him an opportunity to audition and join the uniquely talented cast of the most adventurous prime-time variety show of its day, In Living Color (1990). He, Jamie Foxx, Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans made TV history with their originality. Tommy's impressive film debut was opposite Halle Berry in Strictly Business (1991). He immediately segued into select high-profile films, starring opposite Jada Pinkett Smith in the romantic comedy, Woo (1998) (New Line), and in the provocative urban comedy, Booty Call (1997) (Columbia Pictures). His credits include numerous feature film roles, from Spike Lee's Bamboozled (2000), where he received acclaim and praise for his turn as "Womack/Sleep 'N Eats", to Juwanna Mann (2002) (Morgan Creek Productions') and the pivotal cameo in Jim Carrey's Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995), which has become a cult favorite. Davidson's hilarious impressions of Sammy Davis Jr., Michael Jackson and other icons have become infamous. His visibility on In Living Color (1990) led to three Showtime specials: "On Strength of New York", "Illin' in Philly" and "Takin' it to DC". His elasticity as a performer who delivers on both the big and small screen led to other projects like the lead in the Disney's animated series, The Proud Family (2001), and as a host on FOX's "The NFL Show", alongside football greats Michael Irvin and Tony Siragusa. Davidson also portrays the lead in Will Smith's up-and-coming animated series, "Youngin's" (2000). Tommy stars - along with 80 other star stand-ups - in I Am Comic (2010), opposite Tim Allen, Lewis Black, Sarah Silverman, Carlos Mencia, Jeff Foxworthy and Kathy Griffin. The film, which premiered on Showtime, is one of Netflix's surefire hits, enjoying a continual surge as a favorite with consumers. Davidson scored big with reviewers and audiences, alike, opposite Michael Jai White, in the critically-lauded spoof comedy, Black Dynamite (2009) (Sony Pictures), last year's big Sundance hit, which is currently being adapted as a cartoon for Adult Swim. He is receiving critical raves for a cameo in Ahmed Ahmed's award-winning documentary, Just Like Us (2010), a feature film masterpiece which is a cross-cultural study of stand-up comedy bridging all ethnicity. Tommy travels internationally selling out every venue in which he headlines.

Shawn Wayans joined Jonathan Hood to talk about his upcoming show at the Chicago Improv in Schaumburg, his career in comedy, his family and much more! Boo Crew Link: theboocrew.com/ Chicago Improv tickets: chicago.improv.com/comedian/tw-eve…Wayans/8481755/ Shawn Wayans is an actor known for co-starring with his brother Marlon in various comic spoofs, including the Scary Movie franchise. Born January 19, 1971 in New York City, Shawn Wayans is the second youngest of the 10 Wayans siblings, a close-knit family of actors, screenwriters and directors best known for comic spoofs such as Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, the Scary Movie series and Dance Flick. Shawn Wayans was born January 19, 1971, in New York City. His father, Howell Wayans, was a supermarket manager, and his mother, Elvira Wayans, was a homemaker. Shawn Wayans is the second youngest of 10 Wayans siblings, all of whom are notable figures in the entertainment industry. Most notable among the Wayans clan are Keenen, an actor, director and writer; Damon, an actor and producer; Kim, an actress; and Marlon, an actor and writer. Wayans attended the Bayard Rustin High School for the Humanities in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. By the time he reached high school, several of his elder siblings were already achieving success as comedians, actors and directors, and Wayans set out to follow in their footsteps. While only a junior in high school, he made his film debut, a brief cameo in I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, a parody of the "blaxploitation" films of the 1970s written and directed by older brother Keenen Ivory Wayans. Film and Television Career Shawn Wayans graduated from high school in 1989, and in 1991 he joined several of his siblings in the cast of In Living Color, the highly acclaimed sketch-comedy show, also written and directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans. The show established the Wayans clan as a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood while also helping launch the careers of unrelated future stars like Jim Carrey and Jamie Foxx. Shawn Wayans left the show in 1993, but three years later, he again teamed up with brothers Keenen and Marlon to make Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, a spoof of earnest coming-of-age-in-the-hood flicks like Boyz n the Hood.

The guys object to how women use Instagram! 2 out of 3 are sad and single now, FYI. They share tricks for ultra-cheap dates, and Jerry maybe scars his kids. Jesus flips out that women in LA expect a first date to cost at least $200, according to a survey. Christian advocates film piracy as a cheap alternative. Jesus does him one better: $2 MOVIE THEATERS. The guys call B.S., but IT'S TRUE. Then, Christian proclaims gangster rap died with Tupac. Jesus almost got into a fist fight on the soccer field. And Jerry struggled during a charity stand-up show, so he pulled out his "STEP-DAD MATERIAL." His kids were in the audience. They had never heard him rag on their step-dad before. They didn't say one word about it. Christian and Jesus helpfully act out how that conversation should have gone. Finally, Jerry reveals how he f*cked up the Wannabes' chances at working for NBC. --- TREAT YOURSELF TO A WANNABES STANDUP SHOW: 8/29 @ The Comedy Palace, San Diego, CA TENTATIVE: 8/31 - 9/2 @ The Chicago Improv w/ Chingo Bling, Schaumburg, IL --- Subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Google Play or your favorite podcast app! Like a cholo on parole, Jerry's changing for the better. Jesus rages over people who dislike ketchup. And the Wannabes break down how to properly do IG. Jerry adds 2 new cities to his ever-expanding Top 3 Cities list: Denver, where the bad bitches make up for the altitude sickness. El Paso, where the Army wives party while their husbands are away. Then, the guys are furious at the games played by private Instagrammers. Christian reveals the secret world of Hide and Mute. Jerry can't take Follow Backs. And Jesus battles depression over celebrity accounts. Jerry reveals upcoming car stunts with his 2004 Mustang, struggles with more unintentional racism, and loses it in his SPORTS MINUTE. Finally, Jesus wants the guys to act out their sex style with a noisemaker. --- COME SEE A WANNABES STANDUP SHOW: 8/29 @ The Comedy Palace, San Diego, CA TENTATIVE: 8/31 - 9/2 @ The Chicago Improv w/ Chingo Bling, Schaumburg, IL --- Subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Google Play or your favorite podcast app! Jerry's on the road with Chingo Bling, so we upgrade his spot to a legit international superstar: Fabrizio Copano is in the building! Fabrizio is one of the biggest comedians in Chile. He's got a hot new Netflix special called Solo Pienso En Mi and several hit Spanish-language movies to his name. Now he's come to conquer America, and Jerry Garcia has become the weird dad he never had (and probably never wanted). Fabrizio reveals: The 3 types of women in Chile! His unexpected brush with American racism! The TV show that represents how the world sees America! That time he partied with Miley Cyrus at an SNL after-party and things got WEIRD! Fabrizio also tells the wild story of how he met his girlfriend while she was married, ended up moving in with her in Mexico, then finally moved with her to L.A. Jesus gives up on fashion. Jerry reveals his closet may not look like a man's closet. Then, the guys discuss toilet water, drying your butt, and proper use of the bidet, all while keeping things PG. The family-friendly train keeps rolling with a wholesome GREASE singalong. Things take a questionable turn when Jerry remembers a heavyset woman splayed across the pavement, and Jesus explains what it's like to get snitched on by a white guy. Finally, the EL CHAPO documentary, ugly rappers, and a brand-new fan-made theme song! Damn, this is a jam-packed episode! Jerry is obsessed with conchas, the kids are using Jesus' AKAs, and we found all the Chris Z fans! But most important: Who's about to have a baby?? The guys return from a great show in San Bernardino with BIG NEWS! Finally back in the studio, they reminisce on all the ways it can suck to be a dad. Jerry remembers the many times his kids hurt themselves. Christian remembers making his daughter his mom's problem. Jesus is not ready for any of it. But...Is HE the father?? Then, the Wannabes go live on Instagram to give shoutouts, answer questions, and get zinged by a fan. Koz's favorite woman comic on the planet, Wendy Liebman was already a star for decades when she went on NBC's "America's Got Talent" and made America fall in love with her all over again. She's smart as hell, really funny and a blast to speak with. Plus, she's done a few live comedy shows with Koz, including the night in 1996 when he stumbled into being her opening act at the Chicago Improv the week before it closed forever!
When we think of Improv we often think of the TV show "Whose Line Is It Anyway" or the famous Chicago Improv comedy club "Second City" which is credited with producing comedians Steve Carell, Tina Fey, and Steven Colbert. What we don't typically think about is how Improv can teach us to be more skillful at life. In this episode, we introduce the three fundamental rules of improv and provide simple actions you can take to be better at everything.
Koz’s favorite female comic is also one he’s known since 1996 – when he made his professional club debut at the Chicago Improv opening up for her. She’s like a female Seinfeld – clean, smart, classy, yet an undeniable master of the funny. This summer she took her career to new heights by competing on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” a decision she made after surviving a harrowing DUI car crash (the other driver was the drunk!) Hear all about her incredible journey and all sorts of funny stuff on this interview, it’s a great one!
Danny Groh is about to PowerSlam his journey from being a misbegotten salesman in Wisconsin to leaving the Chicago improv community behind for the creative allures of The Big Apple RIGHT into your earholes. He's warm, enthusiastic, and an absolute powerhouse on stage and as an MBSing guest, and I'm excited to share this man's experience in the community I'm a part of with the listeners. Danny achieved an MBSing first of telling MULTIPLE stories that made me openly cry. The man can tell a story, but he's also really had some wonderful people in his life helping him find himself over the past decade. I'd argue that those people have been drawn to his genuine, loving nature, but he'd hate that. I'd also argue that he's better than most at counting his blessings and following his heart. SO SWEET!
Jon and John talk to Andrew about how to find a character, his journey through the Chicago Improv scene, and sing a song with Chord Bot.
Nick and Danielle welcome two improv impresarios- Kevin Mullaney- artistic director of the Chicago Improv Festival and Barbara Allen of See You Thursday female improv troupe in Columbus, Ohio. Kevin and Barbara share stories of the Chicago Improv festival.
The Free Press called Tara DeFrancisco “The Funniest Person In Chicago”. She won Top 25 Funniest Women in Curve Magazine. Tara started in stand up but switched to improv! Tara teaches improv and sketch-writing classes at iO, Second City, and ComedySportz, and coaches a Harold team at the iO theatre as well. She performs for the Second City as an understudy for the resident stages, and at CSz several times a week. Her iO team Chaos Theory performs Saturday nights. She is now in four LasVegasDotCom commercials airing nationally (one of them is embedded below). And Tara is the only person so far that I absolutely had to interview twice right away. I don’t know why. Maybe cuz we’re both from Ohio. Read all the notes and see the funny pictures here (opens new window). Full Episode: Video preview:
