Improv comedy helped Levin O'Conner find purpose, love, and a career. Now he's shaping the Montana comedy scene. Hear his story on the Matt Balaker Podcast. Levin fell backward into improv in winter of 2002. In spite of his shy nature he enrolled and attended an improv class at iO Chicago. One class led to two and a year later he graduated the program a better, happier person convinced that improv can change the world for the better. In 2005 he moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career and voice over career. He continued to perform, coach and teach improv at iO West, Westside Comedy Theater and American Music and Dance Academy (AMDA). In 2009 Levin & Annie teamed up to create the show NOW? and toured internationally at theaters, festivals, universities and schools and in 2013 NOW Improv opened a studio of its own. NOW Improv thrived during its two years, but due to the demands of their growing family, they decided to shutter NOW and were hired as Co-Directors of Education for Mi's Westside Comedy Theater where they were tasked with writing and designing a unique improv curriculum, training the faculty and helping grow the community. Most recently Annie & Levin have moved again, this time to Bozeman, MT where they have teamed up with local performer and teacher Molly Hannan to create Last Best Comedy. Today, Yoko's guest of honor is the Head of Greek Art and Mythology at the Met and Professor at Columbia University, Professor Aisha Martinez (Julia Morales @callmejules). In this episode, Yoko and Prof. Martinez dive into the world of myths and events throughout history that may have actually happened, like that time Yoko's Dad said he'd go to Yoko's clarinet recital and went to Buffalo Wild Wings instead. They discuss which Greek deity is the hottest, the possibility of Prof. Martinez becoming his new stepmom, and the most recent wrongdoing Yoko's current evil stepmom Sharon did to him.    ABOUT STEVE HAN:  Steve Han (he/him) is a comedian and actor based out of Los Angeles. And more specifically, marine biology in our oceans. They discuss Professor Grundle's lack of friends in the ocean (unlike Yoko, who has many friends across all bodies of water and land), whether or not the Earth has cheeks that can clap, and a new revelation in Yoko's taxing emotional journey of trying to understand the mind of the evil monster that is his stepmom Sharon.    ABOUT STEVE HAN:  Steve Han (he/him) is a comedian and actor based out of Los Angeles. “Your mind sometimes hijacks your emotions to think the worst-case scenario in order to protect yourself. You need to reclaim your mind in order to be in control.” Jay Sukow Jay began teaching for Second City in 2010 and teaches in both the Improv and Conservatory programs. He is also a facilitator with Second City Works, teaching improv to business professionals to drive behavior change. Previously, he was on faculty at The Second City Chicago, iO Chicago, and ComedySportz Chicago. He is the co-host of “Improvcast with Jay and Landon” and currently performs around town with the group Zer0 H0ur with Bill Chott and Jay Sukow, as well as the monthly show Improv Famous. He has over 25 years of experience as a leader. As an Improv leader and coach, Jay speaks about the dynamics of living the future and having a standard that we can never live up to instead of living in the moment and the “now.” A difference in how we look at the world shifts our focus from our failures into the zone of learning and growing. We will always have stressors in our lives, and instead of avoiding them, we need to learn how to deal with them because we all have seasons and ups and downs; just because it happens now doesn't mean that it will be the same forever. However, always having a positive mindset in all situations will lead you to a happy and more content life, both personally and professionally.  Listen to this and so much more in the episode; petermargaritis.com   Learn more about your ad choices. Shelby Plummer first heard of Slaughterhouse-Five from an internet boyfriend. After being grounded for having an internet boyfriend, she got to actually read the book as an AP English assignment and has been a Vonnegut devotee ever since. She devoured his novels and short stories in a way she had never really engaged with reading. He made a fellow Hoosier feel less alone for thinking it was OK to want everyone to be treated well through life, to read and write about aliens, and to make dirty jokes along the way. Shelby carried those philosophies through an expedient college career and still apples them all the time to her comedy writing and performing. Dive in to this inception of a podcast: MBS was on Blank Cassette to talk to Eric Garneau about U Talkin' U2 To Me. On a week by week basis, Eric uses Blank Cassette to interview a guest about a mixtape or playlist they've made in the past and what went into its construction. MBS has been recommending the podcast UTU2TM to him for a while, and after Eric took her up on it, he made a U2 playlist in response to the show. They talk about what makes UTU2TM work so well, how MBS came to love U2, PLUS which U2 album MBS felt was really hers. Ever since Ben learned to ace Jungle King and Fireball in his family's basement as a kid, he's been a pinball fiend, seeking out machines on boardwalks and at bars so enthusiastically that he eventually founded Pinball Chicago, a league of competitive gamers and compendium of spots in the city that offer pinball. He starts by unpacking the older electromechanical machines versus the much more numerous and modern solid-state machines that brought the replacement of the characteristic bells and chimes and rounds out the conversation by listing the plethora options of barcades that have popped up around the city and some of his favorite tournament experiences.    Notes: This was recorded outside of Clark St. Dog in Chicago, IL.
