Connecting With Shakespeare

Do you not "get" Shakespeare? Well, you're not alone! Improviser and "ensemble whisperer" Liz Allen returns to the podcast to explore the reasons she's never really connected with Shakespeare's plays. Allen famously coached the fictional improv team in Mike Birbiglia's film Don't Think Twice but fears missing out on both cultural and satirical opportunities, and discusses with host Austin Tichenor the ways in which she (and many others) have missed the Shakespeare boat; how to describe the appeal of Shakespeare in five words; the value of “Tools, Not Rules;” drawing inspiration from Darren Freebury-Jones's Shakespeare's Borrowed Feathers; how being haughty at dinner parties is the real goal; and the very real relationship between Shakespeare and improvisation. (Length 31:14) The post Connecting With Shakespeare appeared first on Reduced Shakespeare Company.

D'abord choisir quelques contraintes. Ecrire sans préparation et sans but affiché. Improviser. In Canada, many feel excluded, dehumanized and realize that the place they thought they occupied does not actually exist. To tackle this existential issue and to make sense of a hostile and brutal world, Emilie Nicolas speaks with sociologist Philippe Néméh-Nombré. The professor from Saint Paul University in Ottawa has authored a new book, ‘Improvise the rest. Black studies, poetic risks, decolonial relationality”, in which he explores the role of Black studies, of resourcefulness and inventiveness in reinventing oneself. Together, Emilie and Philippe explore the way in which Black studies enable us to criticize and understand the world and its power relations. They show that Black studies can equip us to better define our place. The second part of the show focuses on university campuses: how do students, particularly foreign ones, experience the current context? Ed's career in music has been nothing short of remarkable, spanning multiple roles including trumpeter, teacher, conductor, and entrepreneur. His deep involvement in so many facets of the musical world has made him a leading voice not just in the trumpet community, but in the broader world of music. In Part 1 of our conversation, Ed takes us back to his early days, sharing stories from his time studying with two of the most iconic trumpet teachers of his era—Vincent Cichowitz and William Vacchiano. We'll dive into his experiences at Juilliard and hear about his early days in New York, including what it was like to work with legendary conductors like Leonard Bernstein and Pierre Boulez. Ed also shares fascinating anecdotes about some of the great orchestral trumpet players he's encountered, such as Tom Stevens, Morris Murphy, and John Wilbraham, and their unique approaches to working with conductors. Plus, he'll give us an inside look at his teaching philosophy, particularly his thoughts on preparation methodology.[Subscriber Content] In Part 2, I ask Ed a thought-provoking question: if he were a student today, knowing what he knows now, what would he do differently? His answer leads us into a rich discussion about music and interpretation that goes beyond the trumpet. We wrap up our conversation by delving into Ed's significant contribution to the trumpet community—Chosen Vale, a project that has left a lasting impact on musicians everywhere.Would you like more inspirational stories, suggestions, insights, and a place to continue the conversations with other listeners? Live from Pawnee: A Parks and Recreation Fan Rewatch Podcast

Once again, Mark and Allen were extremely lucky to spend time with another fantastic guest during a Pawnee Spotlight interview, this time around the middle of May 2024. It was fascinating to talk to Jim about not only his take on the always entertaining M.C. Martin Housely, but also voice overs and impressions, his childhood growing up as the son of Marion Ross, and many other interesting topics.  Jim was a tremendously kind and gracious guest on our show, and we are proud to have one of the only occurences in the world of an honest-to-God "Swanson-Off"! If you're confused at this (and you should be), tune in to see what we're talking about! We've said it before, and will say it once more here, this was yet another in a stream of incredible guests we've had the privilege to have on our show ... A fantastic Pawnee Spotlight featuring a tremendous multi-talented guest! We hope you all enjoy this as much as we did.Visit Jim at https://jimmeskimen.com/ and on Instagram @jimpressions
