Ecclesiastes 2:12-26 reminds us that the pursuit of wisdom and/or work cannot be ends in themselves any more than pleasure or self-indulgence. These things cannot be all this life is about. Listen especially to the words of Isaiah 44 and consider how ridiculous it is to burn half a tree for warmth and worship the other half as god. It's similarly ridiculous to give your heart/life to work (workaholism) and then expect God to bless the chasing of idols. We easily forget that every good gift we're given is meant to point us back to God as the Giver.
Do you love your job? Are you excited to wake up every morning and put your nose to the grindstone? If you answered 'yes,' then you are a rare species. You are part of the lucky 20 to 30%. But even if you do love your job, we all can admit that some days are just plain hard. Grueling. Some days overwhelm in how mundane the task seems. Other days overwhelm in how enormous the problem seems. There’s a four-letter word we could use to describe it: (No, not that one.) TOIL. Toil is the word used at the beginning to describe the curse we face in our work on this fallen planet. And it is the word Solomon uses to talk about the apparent meaninglessness of being a working man or woman. So is there a solution? That’s what this message is for.

If you fail to plan, you plan to pail. Sayings like that communicate the reality that looking to the future is the key to our success. And while that may be the case, the future is also the very thing that fuels our present anxiety. Anxiety can either cause you live for LATER (obsess over the future) or LOITER (ignore the future and just enjoy now). The future may be the key to our earthly success, but as the writer of Ecclesiastes reflects on two future certainties that we can't escape (Our death and our descendants), he challenges our perspective on the future and how we live in the present. He shows us why putting our hope for meaning in merely securing a better future on earth makes for a terrible way to live in the present.

Do you feel the force of the meaninglessness of life? Do you seek solace from seeming pointlessness? We must remember that life and all it contains is a gift from God. When, in our quest for meaning, we forget this vital truth we put things that were never designed to satisfy in God's place.
How do you find joy in life if death is always on it's way? What can possibly be done that is eternal, and why bother to focus on hard work if nothing lasts? Solomon's questions are similar, and the answer is in making disciples.
When we realize, and understand our mortality it leads to a greater joy in Jesus than we've ever known.
