Ole Johnson is a young man with passion. His love for history and the theatrical experience led to meeting Jeff Baas, owner of the Kenosha Theatre, 5919 Sixth Ave. For decades, Baas has worked to restore the 1927 theatre which has been closed since 1963. Ole Johnson has come on board as a “volunteer spokesperson” for the theatre, doing what Ole says, “a favor nobody asked for.” He is the organizer of the upcoming fundraiser – the Public Domain-A-Thon – this Saturday, June 13th at the Houghton Performance Center at Reuther Central High School, 913 57th St. This all-day event features 8 classic films throughout the day and FREE ADMISSION! Today we connect with Ann Morelli. Ann and her husband, Tom opened Morelli's Deli in 1998. For the past 28 years, this dynamic duo and their staff have been serving up some of the best hot beef, deli sandwiches, and soups to the Kenosha community. Ann talks about her and Tom's past experience with convenience stores which led to their success taking over what was formerly Southport Pantry and prior to that White Hen Pantry as well as how overcoming struggles forced them to evolve from a simple convenience store to a full-on neighborhood delicatessen. Morelli's Deli, 7506 7th Ave is open seven days a week, Monday – Fridays at 7am, Weekends at 9am. In this episode of Pushing Up Lilies, I'm covering the mysterious death of Spencer Irwin, a 30-year-old Fresno City College student whose body was discovered behind a business loading dock in Fresno, California, in August of 2024. What initially appeared to authorities to be a tragic but straightforward case quickly became something far more complicated. Spencer was found naked, with no obvious signs of trauma, and early assumptions pointed toward a drug overdose or transient-related death. But toxicology reports later came back clean. No overdose. No clear explanation. And despite the unanswered questions surrounding his death, the coroner ultimately ruled it “natural causes.” What makes this case especially unsettling is what didn't happen. No autopsy was performed. And Spencer's body was cremated. As a forensic death investigator, I discuss the difficult reality of cases that fall into gray areas, where evidence is limited, assumptions are made early, and families are left searching for answers long after a case is considered closed. Because sometimes the hardest part of an investigation… is not what we know. It's what we don't. This episode contains discussion of death, investigative uncertainty, and unresolved circumstances surrounding the case. Listener discretion is advised.

Should Christians cremate their dead? While the Bible does not speak to the issue directly, there are Biblical truths that help shape our thinking about how to handle the dead. Let's think about it. What happens after we die? In this episode of The StickyBeak, we explore unconventional approaches to death, legacy, and memorials — beyond the traditional coffin or cremation.I speak with pioneers who are reimagining the end of life in ways that are surprising, thought-provoking, and sometimes beautiful:The People's Pyramid – a long-term art project and collective memorial founded by The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu (The KLF), turning death into living art.Return Home – a Washington-based funeral home offering natural organic reduction, also known as human composting, a sustainable alternative to cremation.Southern Cryonics – Australia's first and only cryonics facility, preserving bodies in Holbrook, NSW for future revival. From human composting to cryonics to collective art memorials, this episode is a curious, reflective, and sometimes surprising look at how humans are redefining death, remembrance, and legacy. If you've ever wondered about alternative funerals, futuristic memorials, or the ethics of preserving life beyond death, this episode offers a thoughtful exploration that will challenge the way you think about the end of life.A HUGE thank you to these legends for getting involved...Ru CallenderFounder of Green Funeral Company,One of the two official undertakers for The Pyramid People's Pyramid.WEBSITE: https://www.thepeoplespyramid.orgBrienna Smith Funeral Director at Return HomeINSTAGRAM: @returnhomenorWEBSITE: https://returnhome.com/Peter TsolakidesFounder of Southern CryonicsWEBSITE: https://www.sandbox.southerncryonics.com/

The Cincinnati Tanyard MurderJump to the AD-FREE Safe House EditionEpisode 17 is a report from Lafcadio Hearn, on of my favorite Pioneers of True Crime. Although he became better known late in his career for his books on travel and on Japanese legends and ghost stories, Lafcadio Hearn began his professional writing career as a staff correspondent for the Cincinnati Enquirer. He was such a devotee of Edgar Allen Poe that he carried the nickname The Raven, given to him by an early mentor, throughout his life. The devotion shows in much of his writing, including this account of what's commonly known to local history as “the tanyard murder” in 1874. His account of the crime helped, I'm sure, make it one of the most well-known of Cincinnati's historical murders. Hearn is also well-known for his essays about the poorest parts of Cincinnati.Even though the author was visually impaired (he carried with him both a magnifying glass and a telescope), Hearn's account of this ghastly crime contains graphic details of the discovery of the body and the autopsy. The tanyard was situated next to a soap factory that had caught fire the previous night and attracted a crowd of 50,000, the newspapers said, to watch the massive flames. Such was the mood of the city that Hearn begins his report with a quote from William Shakespeare's tragic Hamlet.True crime history is not just about reviving the stories of America's scandals, scoundrels, and scourges, but also about exploring the history of true crime as a genre. Don Winsett explains how recycled implants and metals from cremation are safely refined, reduce environmental impact, and often fund charitable donations, transforming medical devices into a final act of generosity through transparent, regulated practices. Plan your visit to the museum today at nmfh.org and take a journey through over 30,000 square feet of fascinating history. Subscribe to The Final Curtain Never Closes on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Key takeaways 1. Implants, pacemakers, and other metals recovered after cremation can be safely refined and reused rather than buried or wasted. 2. Recycling cremation metals reduces environmental strain by limiting the need for new mining and keeping durable materials out of landfills and soil. 3. Many providers dedicate the proceeds from refined metals to charity, turning medical hardware into meaningful donations that benefit local communities. 4. Clear communication, chain-of-custody, and regulatory compliance are essential to building trust with families and protecting the integrity of the process. 5. Including recycling preferences in pre-need plans helps families avoid difficult decisions in the midst of grief and can align end-of-life choices with personal values.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
