Chip Conley is the founder of Joie de Vivre hotels, the second-largest boutique hotel brand in the world. At age 52, he joined Airbnb as Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy, reporting to CEO Brian Chesky, who was 21 years younger. He earned the title of Airbnb's “Modern Elder” by guiding the young founders on leadership and culture while learning Silicon Valley's tech mindset himself. Today, Chip leads the Modern Elder Academy, the world's first midlife wisdom school, and is the author of best-selling books like Wisdom@Work and Peak. He champions the idea that age and experience are assets—and that midlife can be a launchpad for renewed purpose and impact. In this conversation, we discuss:1. The reality of Brian Chesky in “founder mode”—the good, bad, and stressful2. How Chip went from running 52 boutique hotels to becoming Airbnb's in-house mentor in his 50s3. The “mentor and intern” mindset: how to simultaneously teach others and stay curious like a beginner4. Why AI might actually favor older workers (hint: human wisdom vs. artificial intelligence)5. His framework for navigating midlife transitions and finding meaning after 406. Specific tactics for older professionals to thrive in tech companies7. Surprising data that midlife is often the happiest time of life—and how to leverage your 40s, 50s, and beyond8. We've just wrapped up our series on Fathers and Daughters, and today we're kicking off a brand-new conversation: Fathers and Sons. While many of the same parenting principles apply to both sons and daughters, Scripture teaches that God created men and women with unique roles and responsibilities. That means our parenting approach toward sons should reflect those God-given distinctions.Whether your sons are still at home or fully grown, this conversation is for you. If you're a grandfather, these principles still apply as you influence your grandsons or encourage your adult sons in their own fatherhood journey.Impart Wisdom IntentionallyOne of the most important roles a father plays is helping his son pursue wisdom and pursue God. It's not enough to simply model wisdom; we need to have direct, intentional conversations about it.Proverbs 3:1-6 (NLT)"My child, never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your heart... Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding."Solomon—the wisest man who ever lived—understood the importance of passing wisdom to the next generation. As dads, that's our responsibility too.Whether you're naturally talkative or more reserved, God calls every father to teach. This doesn't mean you need to be a Bible scholar or a polished speaker. Just be intentional.Deuteronomy 6:6-9 (NLT)"Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up."Practical ways to do this include reading the Bible together, listening to Bible-based podcasts, or using tools like the resources at pursueGOD.org.Proverbs 3:13-15 (NLT)"Joyful is the person who finds wisdom... Wisdom is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her."A wise son will experience more joy and fewer regrets—whether it's about money, relationships, or making wise life choices.Teach Them to WorkFathers must teach their sons the value of hard work. Work is not a punishment—it's part of God's design for men.Genesis 2:15 (NLT)"The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it."Before sin entered the world, God gave Adam meaningful work. This shows that work is not a result of the fall—it's a fundamental part of being a man.Unfortunately, in today's culture, too many men are disengaged from the workforce. In August 2024, 6.8 million American men between ages 25 and 54 were neither working nor looking for work.As fathers, it's our job to push back...

How do we find our true selves among the distractions of a noisy world? Joshua Berry shares with Kevin that being naive can help us reconnect with our innate qualities and authenticity. He explains how naivety can serve as a shield or a source of strength, allowing us to foster optimism and genuine innovation in our personal and professional lives. Kevin and Joshua also explore the tensions between being pragmatic and naive, highlighting how these qualities are not mutually exclusive but rather complementary. Joshua also introduces four questions that can help individuals examine their beliefs and make intentional choices - Where did you learn that belief? Is that belief absolutely true? What do you gain by holding that belief? What do you lose by holding that belief? In today’s episode, I’ll be speaking with Chip Conley who is on a midlife mission. After disrupting the hospitality industry twice, first as the founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, the second-largest operator of boutique hotels in the U.S., and then as Airbnb’s Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy, leading a worldwide revolution in travel, Conley co-founded MEA (Modern Elder Academy) in January 2018 in Baja California, Mexico. Inspired by his experience of intergenerational mentoring as a ‘modern elder’ at Airbnb, MEA is the world's first ‘midlife wisdom school’ and has a campus opening on a 2,600-acre regenerative horse ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2024. Dedicated to reframing the concept of aging, MEA supports students to navigate midlife with a renewed sense of purpose and possibility. A New York Times bestselling author, Conley's 7th book "Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better with Age" is about rebranding midlife to help people understand the upside of this often-misunderstood life stage and he was asked to give a 2023 TED talk on the "midlife chrysalis." We talk about the following and so much more: ✅What inspired him to transition from the hospitality industry to the world of tech and entrepreneurship ✅ As a mentor and advisor to many entrepreneurs, what advice does he find himself giving most frequently? ✅How he sees the intersection between hospitality principles and the tech industry? ✅ In his book "Wisdom @ Work," he explores the concept of embracing age diversity in the workplace and elaborates on this ✅ What inspired him to create the Modern Elder Academy? ✅ How Modern Elder Academy redefines traditional notions of retirement and agin We’d like to thank our sponsor, OSEA, the pioneers of clean, clinically proven skincare from the sea that delivers visible results while respecting the planet. This is a re-air of episode 183 with Chip Conley, originally released on April 17th, 2022. Chip Conley is the founder of The Modern Elder Academy and the author of five bestselling books, including Wisdom@Work, which is based on his experience of mentoring Brian Chesky, the CEO of Airbnb. Chip's extensive knowledge of the hospitality industry proved invaluable to the founders of Airbnb, who came to regard him as ‘a modern elder'. Today, Chip has transitioned into a powerful advocate for the pursuit of meaning and purpose in midlife and beyond. He's eternally curious and energetic, and he's proud to have learned to surf and speak Spanish at the age of 58.
Listen along as we continue to see God's wisdom for life. Notes//Quotes: Kim J reading - Prov 6:6-11, 3:9-10, 23:4-5 Gen 2:15-17, Gen 1:27-28 Prov 10:4 Prov 15:6 Prov 22:1-2, Prov 23:5 “The works of monks and priests, however holy and arduous they be, do not differ one whit in the sight of God from the works of the rustic laborer in the field or the woman going about her household tasks, but that all works are measured before God by faith alone… Indeed, the menial housework of a manservant or maidservant is often more acceptable to God than all the fastings and other works of a monk or priest, because the monk or priest lacks faith.” Martin Luther Col 3:17, Col 3:25 Our work can be a calling only if it is reimagined as a mission of service to something beyond merely our own interests. Thinking of work mainly as a means of self-fulfillment and self-realization slowly crushes a person. - Tim Keller and Katherine Alsdorf “The Church's approach to an intelligent carpenter is usually confined to exhorting him not to be drunk and disorderly in his leisure hours, and to come to church on Sundays. What the church should be telling him is this: that the very first demand that his religion makes upon him is that he should make good tables. Church by all means, and decent forms of amusement, certainly—but what us is all that if in the very center of his life and occupation he is insulting God with bad carpentry? No crooked table legs or ill fitting drawers ever, I dare swear, came out of the carpenter's shop at Nazareth. Nor, if they did, couple anyone believe that they were made by the same hand that made heaven and earth. - Dorthy Sayers 1 Cor 15:57-58, Everyone will be forgotten, nothing we do will make any difference, and all good endeavours, even the best, will come to naught. Unless there is God. If the God of the Bible exists, and there is a True Reality beneath and behind this one, and this life is not the only life, then every good endeavour, even the simplest ones, pursued in response to God's calling, can matter forever. - Tim Keller

Bob is a passionate advocate of "The Southwest Way," which refers to the company's core values and people-centric culture. About ChipThe iconic boutique hotelier who helped Airbnb's founders turn their fast-growing tech start-up into a global hospitality brand, Chip Conley is a New York Times bestselling author whose manifesto on ageism, Wisdom@Work: The Making of a Modern Elder, is inspired by his experience of being both a mentor and an intern in his 50s. After selling the company he started as a rebel entrepreneur at age 26, Joie de Vivre Hospitality, Chip wasn't sure what was next. He could have retired at age 52. How do I relate to authority in a God-honoring way? How do I wisely lead those under my care without taking advantage of them? What do I do with the perceived inequities I see in this world? Where does God show up in all of this? Letʼs put to work Godʼs wisdom from His Word this morning!
In this episode, I chat with Chip Conley, founder and CEO of Modern Elder Academy, NYT Best Selling Author, founder of the chain boutique hotels Joie de Vivre, and former head of Hospitality and Strategy at Airbnb. This episode unpacks the unexpected truth about having a midlife crisis by touching on the "modern elder" concept, midlife crises, and perspective shifts about aging. In the first half of his life, Chip started a chain of boutique hotels called "Joie de Vivre." Eventually, Chip experienced a midlife crisis where he almost died from an allergic reaction to an antibiotic, and five of his friends committed suicide. During this time, Chip felt lost but knew he had more to give. After selling his business to Hyatt, Chip became the head of Hospitality and Strategy at Airbnb. Despite not being technologically advanced, Chip brought tremendous value to the Airbnb team with what they called "modern elder" wisdom. A Modern Elder is someone as curious as they are wise, allowing them to learn and adapt to change while providing wisdom. Upon learning this new concept, Chip discovered his purpose of teaching others experiencing midlife crises about changing their perspectives on aging. This new perspective sets the foundation for a more meaningful, intentional life by practicing mindfulness and meditation and applying your wisdom to the second half of your life. According to Chip, most people think their lives will go downhill after 50. However, developing midlife wisdom can help people take control of the last half of their lives by participating in meaningful experiences. The episode ends with Chip explaining the student experience at the Modern Elder Academy. The academy's lessons use nature to teach leadership qualities to students, understand their purpose, and how to take their experience and wisdom to apply them to their purpose. Thank you, Chip, for sharing your wisdom and reminding the audience that it's never too late to live a meaningful life! Check Out More of Chip's Content Here

Have you ever wondered what men's work and men's coaching is all about? It's an area that seems to be increasing in visibility right now with various formats / approaches / philosophies out there. To explain all of this in more detail I'm joined by Men's Coach Tim Neal. Tim has been a coach & trainer since 2012 and uses a combination of coaching modalities, psychology, neuroscience, NLP and embodiment & mindfulness practices to guide men to create powerful & transformational personal breakthroughs. He's also is one of the teaching staff on a Men's Wisdom Work coaching program I am mid-way through right now. So he joins me to dig into the subject and explain the world of men's work in detail. We talk about what men's work is, how it can build confidence, masculine embodiment and authentic, conscious relationships, who can benefit from it, some of the underlying philosophies behind masculine coaching and how it differs from and can be used in conjunction with therapy. For anyone who's curious and wants to explore this a bit more, Men's Wisdom Work has a weekly free community men's group, open to anyone, drop and see what it's all about or feel free to reach out to me directly for more info. On this episode of Wisdom Work, co-hosts Christa Mantey and Christy McCaffrey discuss how we can create magic in the mundane. It is easy to get caught in the loop of our routines and responsibilities and forget all about the possibility of creating magic in our lives. This conversation is all about how we can intentionally create more moments of magic, joy and a feeling of being connected to something bigger than ourselves - on a daily basis!***We would like to mention the fact that this episode was recoded prior to the recent events in Texas. We chose a lighter topic this time around, but we want to be sure that we honor and recognize the collective pain and trauma being felt and experienced right now. Our hearts are broken for those suffering this unimaginable loss. We also send our love and support to all of you, as we all do our best to combat the collective pain and anxiety caused by such violence. ***
