What makes a life truly meaningful? In this two-part series, we wrestle with the tension between the human desire for significance and the reality of our smallness. From the tiniest atom to the largest galaxy, creation points us to something greater—God Himself. Scripture tells us that everything is from Him, through Him, and for Him. Our purpose isn’t found in ourselves, but in connection with the One who holds it all together. Listen in as Pastor Jacob Ley discusses this topic and explores how our significance is found in Him.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We're finishing The God Who Weeps by Terryl Givens and Fiona Givens. This is the first book in a trilogy of Mormon theology and we want to leave room in the year to get through it all. What does today hold for us? We start with a long discussion on the pre-mortal existence, transitioning into existence, then ascending to perfection thanks to Mormon beliefs. We didn't realize until pretty late in the project that the 5 chapters of the book are structured around the different stages of the Mormon Plan of Salvation (PoS), but it become clear pretty early on in our discussion. All told, the book is a marker of modern orthodox Mormon belief: pray, pay, and obey. They even have an ultra-conservative take on abortion that makes the official stance of the church seem like bleeding-heart liberals in comparison. Then we talk about The Meaning of Life, a Monty Python movie from 1983 that has a much more healthy way of looking at the random cosmic soup that led to human existence. We wrap with some happy news about the success of a slightly higher tax in Massachusetts that raised a bunch of money for all the things for which taxes are used. We round out by going through some delightful listener mail from the April Fools episode! Before diving into the deep stuff, Josh kicks things off with an unexpectedly passionate review of Walmart's Prima Della maple honey ham—and a full-on deli discourse that includes sandwich tips, cheese slicing preferences, and a comical encounter with a hardworking (and possibly half-deer?) Walmart employee. It's a fun, slightly unhinged start that sets the tone before we pivot to some deeper reflections from the Easter message. But don't worry—we eventually get to the good stuff. Josh and Arch take us into 1 Corinthians 15, unpacking Paul's powerful message about the resurrection and what it means to live victoriously—not just forever, but right now. They dig into how our secure future in Christ shapes how we face today's struggles with boldness and hope. Along the way, you'll hear reflections from the Easter message, behind-the-scenes stories, and a preview of the new series, I Might Have a Problem—where we'll confront modern challenges like our health, frantic schedules, money habits, relationships, and yes... even our phones. It's a little bit deli, a little bit theology, and a whole lot of real life.
Sermon preached at ROCK City Church Melbourne by Pastor Ferdinand Haratua
What is the meaning of life? Can this question possibly be answered in a mere 30-minute sermon? It is a question pondered for ages and there are many opinions about it. But for the child of God, it has a simple answer. Paul addresses the true meaning of life for a born-again child of God …
In this episode, I crack open Chapter 10 of Storythinking by Angus Fletcher—the part of the book that hit me in the gut and lit a fire in my mind. We explore the ancient roots of meaning, the limitations of happiness, and why story—not logic—may hold the real answer to life's biggest question. If you're a rogue learner, a guerrilla thinker, or someone who's felt trapped in the cold machinery of reason, this one's for you. It's about reclaiming your narrative brain and stepping back into the myth.
In this episode, I delve into the profound concept of presence and its role in uncovering life's true meaning. Join me as I explore how embracing the present moment enhances our experiences of being, doing, creating, feeling, and sensing. I discuss practical approaches to mindfulness, share insights from thought leaders, and offer guidance on integrating presence into daily life. Grandpa Bill-Nihilism-3/27/25 GB-1. Existentialism as a Response to Nihilism:Before we dive into how existentialism can help us move 'From Angst to Action,' it's important to understand its origins, As our esteemed guest, Byron Athene, will be pointing out, existentialism emerged, in part, as a response to nihilism. Nihilism, at its core, declares that 'life is meaningless because nothing matters.' This can lead to a bleak outlook, as Byron described, where 'nothing matters so why do we care? We might as well screw everybody over and to hell with the consequences!' However, Byron also suggests a more positive interpretation: 'nothing matters so why don't we make the most of this and enjoy the short time we have as much as possible?Against this backdrop, existentialism asserts that 'life has the meaning we give to it.' As Byron so eloquently puts it, 'I think that makes clear that everybody is an existentialist whether they know it or not because we're all giving life our personal meanings and responding to them. Catholics say, this is the meaning of life. Buddhists say this is the meaning of life, so...we create meaning.2. Existential Reframing:Byron will probably also introduce us to the concept of 'existential reframing,' a powerful tool for navigating life's challenges. He contrasts this with positive reframing, which seeks to find positives in negatives. Existential reframing, that he'll explain, is 'acknowledging that life is infinitely more important than anything existing within it.' So, even in a less-than-ideal situation, we can recognize that 'you're in a really lucky position to be alive to have that problem.' This shift in perspective can empower us to find solutions or make the most of our circumstances."3. Absurdism:Finally, Byron will touch on absurdism, another philosophical response to the search for meaning. Absurdism suggests that 'we strive to find meaning but doing so is an absurdly impossible task because we're never going to know.' As Byron illustrates, 'We're just metaphorical ants in an ant farm on the desk of a scientist.' This perspective acknowledges the inherent limitations of human understanding."Grandpa Bill will ask Byron, Byron, with these viewpoints in mind, how does this affect the way you treat your patients, and how you view the nature of the mind?Byron can then expand on how these philosophical viewpoints inform his practice.Questions for Byron Athene:Byron, with nihilism, existentialism, and absurdism in mind, how does that affect your work with clients in the UK?How do you help clients distinguish between the nihilistic despair and the existential freedom to create meaning? Can you provide examples of how existential reframing has helped your clients navigate difficult situations? How do you address the 'absurd' in therapy, and help clients find peace with the limitations of human understanding? How does the cultural climate of the UK influence the way people approach these philosophical concepts? In your opinion, how can individuals apply these philosophical ideas to their daily lives to enhance their well-being?How does a psychoanalytic viewpoint interact with an existential viewpoint?Nihilism, Existentialism, and Absurdism: A Conversation with Byron AtheneFrom Meaninglessness to Meaning: Existentialism in Everyday LifeExistential Reframing: Turning Challenges into OpportunitiesFinding Meaning in the Absurd: A Philosophical Approach to Well-BeingThe UK Mind: Psychoanalysis and ExistentialismGrandpa Bill and Byron Athene: The Meaning of LifeFrom Angst to Action: A Philosophical Discussion#Existentialism,#Nihilism,#Absurdism,#ExistentialReframing,#Psychoanalysis,#Psychotherapy,#MentalWellness,#MeaningOfLife,#GrandpaBill,#ByronAthene,#bhsaleskennelkelpholistichealinghour ,#@billholt8792,#UKTherapy,#Philosophy,#SelfDiscovery,#PersonalGrowth,#AnxietyToAction,

In a world that often feels fragmented, uncertain, and spiritually empty, what if belief isn't just possible - but essential? Today, I'm sitting down with Ross Douthat, New York Times columnist and one of our most nuanced cultural thinkers, to explore a radical proposition: Why everyone should be religious in an age of growing skepticism. We're going beyond the debates of belief versus non-belief. This conversation dives into the mysteries at the heart of human experience - from quantum physics that suggests the universe might be more intentional than we thought, to near-death experiences that challenge everything we understand about consciousness. Douthat brings a provocative, intellectually rigorous perspective that defies easy categorization. We'll explore how ancient spiritual wisdom might hold profound answers for our hyper-individualized, technology-driven world. How can religious thinking help us navigate complexity, find meaning, and reconnect with something larger than ourselves? Expect surprises. We'll uncover scientific discoveries that point toward design, discuss supernatural experiences that defy materialist explanations, and wrestle with life's deepest questions. Whether you're a committed believer, a curious skeptic, or someone feeling spiritually lost, this episode promises to expand your understanding and offer a message of hope. We're not just talking about belief - we're reimagining what it means to be human in a mysterious universe. Ross Douthat is a columnist for The New York Times op-ed page. He is the author of Believe, The Deep Places, The Decadent Society, To Change The Church, Privilege, and Grand New Party. Before joining the Times he was a senior editor for The Atlantic. He is the film critic for National Review, and he has appeared regularly on television, including Charlie Rose, PBS Newshour, and Real Time with Bill Maher.Ross' Book:BelieveRoss' Recommendation:SeveranceSubscribe to Our Substack: Shifting CultureConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. Sun., March 16The Meaning of Lifewith Josh ReevesThere are many inspirational thoughts about the meaning of life. Jesus said it was spiritual rebirth. Charles Schulz said it's anyone and anything that's loved by you. Psychologists like Jung and Maslow said it was personal development or self-actualization. Others have said it's something we ourselves choose. Today we talk about the most intimate of topics—the very meaning of your life.
Has there been a philosophical question discussed over the centuries more than "what is the meaning of life"? Since it's been such a popular topic over the years, it felt appropriate to give our take. On today's episode Allen, Daniel, and Joe talk about the theme from the world's point of view and the Christians. It turns out that there is a stark difference! In this thought-provoking conversation, wealth manager and author David Bahnsen challenges conventional wisdom about work, retirement, and purpose. Managing $7.1 billion in assets hasn't stopped Bahnsen from questioning our culture's assumptions about work as something to escape from. His book "Full-Time: Work in the Meaning of Life" presents a radical rethinking of vocation as central to human flourishing. Bahnsen argues that our focus on consumption over production and our eagerness to retire represent fundamental misunderstandings of what gives life meaning. You know, they say there's two subjects you don't bring up in polite conversation: politics and religion. Convictions run deep, tempers can run hot, and it usually ends up in an argument. Well, today we dove into how the religious leaders tried to trap Jesus with these very topics, attempting to undermine His authority. But Jesus, calm, clever, and collected, brilliantly outmaneuvered them, remaining laser-focused on what truly matters. First, they challenged Jesus on paying taxes to Caesar, hoping to paint Him as a political rebel or a Roman sympathizer. With the simple question, "Whose image is on this coin?", Jesus highlighted their dependence on a system ruled by Caesar while emphasizing God's ultimate claim on their lives. "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesars, and to God the things that are God's." Give Caesar your money, fine, but give God your everything. You bear His image. Next, the Sadducees, those who deny the resurrection, presented a convoluted scenario about a woman with seven husbands, aiming to expose the supposed absurdity of resurrection life. Jesus cut through their smokescreen, reminding them that earthly marriage points to the ultimate covenant love of God. In the resurrection, we will all belong to God, experiencing a love that transcends our earthly understanding. He then challenged their skepticism by pointing to God's self-revelation to Moses, "I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob," the God not of the dead, but of the living! These traps reveal how easily we get distracted by political fights and religious debates, losing sight of the bigger picture. Jesus reminds us to keep the main thing the main thing: the ultimacy of God, the eternality of souls, and the supremacy of hope. We were created by and for God, destined for eternal life in His presence. This is the hope we cling to, the truth that should shape our lives. So, friends, let's not be co-opted into someone else's lesser agenda. Let's not get derailed by divisive debates or political maneuvering. Instead, let's fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who stayed the course to the cross and beyond. Let's live as gospel people, centered on the unshakeable truth of God's love and the glorious hope of resurrection life. Let's keep the main thing the main thing!
You know how some people enter your life with a knock, a bang, or maybe even a LinkedIn request? Not Rebecca Batterman, returning champion to Out of Patients, making her dramatic second appearance,Back in 2019, she karmically appeared like a plot twist in a film noir—unexpected, inevitable, and full of surprises. An AI strategist, an optimist (yes, those exist), and a young adult cancer survivor, Rebecca is here to school us on everything from the future of AI in healthcare to why nostalgia is a coping mechanism we all need. In this no-BS conversation, we talk about the state of innovation (is it still a buzzword?), the wild advancements in early cancer detection, and whether AI-generated empathy is just another overpromised tech fantasy. We also take a detour into the absurdity of pinkwashed cancer fundraising, the evolution of cancer portrayals in pop culture, and the ultimate question: Can you separate the art from the artist? Come for the cancer survivorship insights, stay for the South Park references and existential musings on whether you'd rather live in the past (with no antibiotics) or the future (with AI clones of yourself). What makes a good life? For decades, psychologists have debated whether true fulfillment comes from happiness—a life of comfort and joy—or meaning—a life of purpose and impact. But what if there's a third way?University of Chicago psychology professor Shigehiro Oishi has spent his career studying happiness, meaning, and what truly brings people deep satisfaction. His new research suggests that some of the most fulfilled people don't prioritize either—they live psychologically rich lives, full of novelty, challenges, and transformative experiences. In this episode, Oishi explains why psychological richness might be the missing piece in our search for fulfillment.

Today's reading is a summation of what we have learned so far. Man is made for God, and we are born with a capacity for knowing God. Using our senses, listening to our consciences, and employing our gift of reason, we can know with certainty that God exists. Fr. Mike explains how we live freely only in communion with our Creator, even if we are limited in our capacity of comprehension. Knowing this compels us to share our faith in God with those who do not yet believe. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 44-49.
