Jesus sent the disciples because they needed to see what he saw. Jesus sent the disciples to know the joy of doing ministry. Jesus sent the disciples to give them power.

CHORAL ANTHEM presented after the sermon "Is Any Afflicted" ~ arr. William Billings .......... Luke 10:1-11, 17, 21, 23-24 (NRSV) 1 After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. 2 He said to them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest. 3 Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. 4 Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, “Peace to this house!” 6 And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. 7 Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the labourer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. 8 Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; 9 cure the sick who are there, and say to them, “The kingdom of God has come near to you.” 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 11 “Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.” 17 The seventy returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!’ 21 At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, ‘I thankyou, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 23 Then turning to the disciples, Jesus said to them privately, ‘Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.

Evangelism: It’s not a numbers game. When Jesus sends out his followers, he sends them out to offer peace, share meals, and share stories together—to build relationships. But in today’s world, where we seem to be more divided than ever, how do we create community? How do we provide hospitality when it means being uncomfortable? Casey W. FitzGerald preaches today from Luke 10:1-11, with reference to “Community: The Structure of Belonging” by Peter Block.
Our Lord's Prayer series continues.
We have to root our emotional well-being in the opportunity to do the work of the Kingdom of God instead of the results of that work. Thoughts for the week: What brings you joy? What things do you let affect how you feel? Are those things worthy of having authority in your life?
A new look at evangelism, down falls and it's never ending call.
