In this episode, I sit down with acclaimed writer and poet Kathleen Norris to talk about her deeply personal new book, Rebecca Sue. The book tells the story of her sister Becky - born with brain damage at birth - whose life was marked by both difficulty and transformation, humor and resilience. Kathleen shares what it was like to grow up alongside Becky, how storytelling became a way of honoring her full humanity, and why persistence was necessary to bring this book into the world. Along the way, she reflects on grief, community, the role of faith, and the ways we learn to see people not through labels or limitations, but in the fullness of who they are. This is a conversation about love, loss, and the surprising grace that emerges when we pay attention to every story - even the ones we're tempted to overlook.Kathleen Norris is the award-winning poet, writer, and author of the New York Times bestselling books The Cloister Walk, Acedia & Me: A Marriage, Monks, and a Writer's Life, Dakota: A Spiritual Geography, Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith, The Virgin of Bennington, and several volumes of poetry. Exploring the spiritual life, her work is at once intimate and historical, rich in poetry and meditations, brimming with exasperation and reverence, deeply grounded in both nature and spirit, sometimes funny, and often provocative.Widowed in 2003, Kathleen Norris now divides her time between South Dakota and Honolulu, Hawaii, where she is a member of an Episcopal church. She travels to the mainland regularly to speak to students, medical professionals, social workers, and chaplains at colleges and universities, as well as churches and teaching hospitals. For many years she was the poetry editor of Spirituality & Health magazine. She serves as an editorial advisor for the monthly Give Us This Day from Liturgical Press, and writes for a weekly e-newsletter, Soul Telegram: Movies & Meaning with her friend Irish storyteller Gareth Higgins.Kathleen's Book:Rebecca SueSubscribe to Our Substack: Shifting CultureConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. We'll look at the third line of the prayer, “Give us this day our daily bread.” There's an important Greek word, epiousian, translated as “daily.” It's a word that reminds us of what is essential. We're praying in part for the bread that feeds our bodies, and even more, our souls. How does Christ satisfy our hungry souls?

Traditional Worship | Rev. Kimberly Constant |Throughout Jesus' ministry, prayer was the foundation on which He built His relationship with God. Before every miracle — from giving sight to the blind to feeding of the multitude, from raising Lazarus from the dead to facing that darkest moment in Gethsemane — He always prayed. Prayer was essential for Jesus, and when He gave His Sermon on the Mount, considered to be the greatest of all His teachings, He instructed us on how to pray by giving us the model prayer that has stood the test of time. In this sermon series, we will examine the power and depth of what has come to be known as the Lord's Prayer. As modern-day disciples, we can learn so much from these timeless words. We are delighted you have joined us for our traditional worship, and we welcome you as we explore what it means when we ask, “Teach us to pray.”
In the fourth petition of the Lord's Prayer, we move from an acknowledgment of God (Father, Sovereign, and Kingdom) now to personal petitions, beginning this week with the petition for the Lord to give us our daily bread.
In this fourth teaching, Dr. Lea helps us understand how to see supernatural provision. As God’s people, we live above the natural economies of the world’s system. Dr. Lea gives powerful principals, that if applied, can cause you to live in provision, even if the world’s economies are being shaken.

In the greatest sermon ever preached, the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is the teacher. If you will learn from Jesus, and do your homework, your life will be changed! And if you'll open your eyes and your heart, the Lord's Prayer will teach you! Pastor Mike Patz continues this segment on the Lord's Prayer in the School of Jesus series highlighting, "Give us this day our daily bread." Asking. Petitions. Laying your requests before the Lord. So often we are fearful that our prayers will not be answered, and we stop asking. But Jesus doesn't want us to be stuck there in the place of not praying. Our Father is God and the King, and we are princes and princesses of the Most High. We are heirs and co-heirs, and He longs to partner with us. Let us live us up to the calling and position God has placed us in. In the asking, there is attaching. This is when we become closer to the Father. In the asking, our authority is utilized, and answers can begin to be actualized! When we ask, we are inviting God into the situation. Then we surrender to Father's will. God always answers His children's prayers, but sometimes the answer is "no". It is at that time we have to trust our Father deeply. May we become a church of good askers!
The Lord's Prayer starts by addressing God as "Abba, Daddy," emphasizing His loving, fatherly care for us. This reminds us that God knows what's best for us and provides what we need according to His perfect will. By recognizing Him as our Father, we learn to trust and submit to His authority. The phrase "Give us this day our daily bread" teaches us that God is the true provider, and we must approach Him with humility, recognizing our dependence on Him. The prayer encourages us to focus on today, trusting that God will meet our needs for the present, rather than worrying about the future. It also reminds us that our daily bread is just enough for today, teaching us not to hoard or rely on our own strength but to trust in God's faithfulness as He provides exactly what we need for each day.

During the great toilet paper shortage of 2020, when store shelves, warehouses, and online shops were empty, people had to come up with creative replacements for it. From wet wipes to tissues to napkins, individuals found a way to make do. It was easy to get caught up in storing up more products than needed at the time just to be safe and prepared for the unexpected. But where does being prepared cross over to being fearful that leads to hoarding, greed, and selfishness? Jesus Addresses Hoarding In Luke 12:15-21, Jesus deals with this issue. “Then He said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions'” “And He told them this parable: ‘The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.' Then he said, ‘This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I'll say to myself, ‘You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.'” “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?' This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God'” Receiving God's Bread Daily During the Israelites 40 years in the wilderness, God taught them how to receive their daily bread, one day at a time, giving us, too, an example of how to receive His bread daily. Exodus 16:4 explains, “Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.” Like the Israelites, we may not recognize God's provision at first glance. Exodus 16:15 describes their first reactions to the new bread. “When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, ‘What is it?' For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, ‘It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat.'” Exodus 16:31-32 describes what God's heaven-sent bread looked like. “The people of Israel called the bread manna. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey. Moses said, ‘This is what the Lord has commanded: “Take an omer of manna and keep it for the generations to come, so they can see the bread I gave you to eat in the wilderness when I brought you out of Egypt.'” Don't Worry, Have Faith! Rather than compulsively store up supplies, Jesus tells us to not worry about our lives, what we'll eat, or what we'll wear, because life is more than food and our bodies more than clothes (Luke 12:22-23). Jesus points out how birds don't sow or reap and have no storeroom or barn, still, God meets their needs by feeding them. He tells us that we are much more valuable to God than them, assuring us that worrying doesn't add a single hour to our day, so why even bother to spend any time worrying? (Luke 12:24-25). Rather, Jesus said, “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will He clothe you—you of little faith!” (Luke 12:27-28). As followers of Jesus, He tells us to not focus our hearts on what we'll eat or drink, and most importantly, to not worry about them because our Father in Heaven knows what we need .Rather, God calls us to seek His kingdom first, and when we do, all these things will be provided for us (Luke 12:29-31). Intersecting Faith & Life: The next time you feel triggered to store up food or supplies out of fear, panic, or worry, thank God for the daily bread He faithfully provides. Ask Him to calm your heart and mind in these situations and help you to turn daily to Him in faith, trusting His provision for your life.
