[14] I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. [15] For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. [16] So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. [17] For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. [18] Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. [19] So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. [20] Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. [21] It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. [22] The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. [23] But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin. Hey Family Brand! It's Melissa here, and today, I'm bringing you a different kind of episode—one that I wasn't expecting to record, but I know it's exactly the conversation I need to have right now. My word for the year is ‘maker,' and while I've spent time thinking about all the ways I want to create—being a homemaker, a moneymaker, a creator—it never occurred to me to focus on being a peacemaker. That changed recently when our family was asked to speak in church, and I was assigned Matthew 5:9: ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.' That moment set me on a journey to rethink what it really means to make peace—not just between people, but inside ourselves. When I first thought about peacemaking, I imagined it in the traditional sense—helping my kids resolve arguments, keeping peace in relationships, and fostering harmony within my family. But as I reflected more, I realized that being a peacemaker starts internally. How do we create peace within ourselves so that we have peace to give? It's easy to think of peace as something external, but when we aren't centered, it's hard to extend calm to others. One of the biggest takeaways from this reflection was learning how to recognize and manage my own emotional state. I shared a tool from a past podcast episode with parenting coach Crystal Heitzma, who teaches about recognizing when we are in our "green zone" (calm and regulated), "yellow zone" (feeling dysregulated), or "red zone" (fully overwhelmed). Learning to catch ourselves in that yellow zone before we spiral is a game-changer in protecting our peace. I've taught this to my kids, and it's been powerful for all of us. I also talk about the mental chatter that often steals our peace—self-doubt, parenting guilt, or insecurities that creep in daily. When we get intentional about quieting those voices and replacing them with truth, we reclaim our inner peace. For me, faith is a huge part of that. I find peace in Christ, and reminding myself of who I am in His eyes helps me stay grounded. Our family also uses personal declarations—statements of who we are and who we are becoming—which are so powerful in silencing negativity. So here's my challenge to you: Take a moment this week to ask yourself, How can I create more peace in my life? Whether it's in your emotions, your thoughts, or your relationships, being a peacemaker starts within. And when we cultivate peace inside, it naturally flows into the lives of those around us. His name, Benedictus, means "Blessed" in Latin. He was born in 480 in Nursia, a small town northeast of Rome. He had only rudimentary schooling: he wrote later of his fear that through book-learning he might 'lose the great understanding of my soul.' At an early age he fled to a monastery where he was tonsured; he then withdrew to a remote mountain, where he lived or several years in a cave, perfecting himself in prayer. His only food was some bread brought to him by Romanus, the monk who had tonsured him. When he became known in the area, he fled his cave to escape the attentions of the pious; but flight proved useless, and in time a community of monks formed around him. He was granted many spiritual gifts: he healed the sick and drove out evil spirits, raised the dead, and appeared in visions to others many miles away. Benedict founded twelve monasteries, most famously that at Monte Cassino. Initially, each monastic house had twelve monks, to imitate the number of the Twelve Apostles. The Rule that he established for his monks was based on the works of St John Cassian and St Basil the Great, and became a standard for western monasteries. Thus he is sometimes called the first teacher of monks in the West. Six days before his death, the Saint ordered that his grave be opened, gathered all his monks together, gave them counsel, then gave his soul back to God on the day that he had predicted. At the moment of his death, two monks in different places had the same vision: they saw a path from earth to heaven, richly adorned and lined on either side with ranks of people. At the top of the path stood a man, clothed in light and unspeakably beautiful, who told them that the path was prepared for Benedict, the beloved of God. In this way, the monks learned that their abbot had gone to his rest.

Grid planning and capacity optimization in the US have much room for improvement, for instance through new AI capabilities, Arshad Mansoor, president and CEO of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), says on the sidelines of the CERAWeek by S&P Global conference. Increased flexibility could stave off the potential of rising power bills for general consumers in light of the country's rapid load growth, he tells Energy Evolution host Taylor Kuykendall. While the US is blessed with abundant gas as well as renewables potential, much remains to be done on the accompanying grid expansion, Hunter Armistead, CEO of Pattern Energy, tells Taylor in this episode from CERAWeek. Taylor will be hosting additional episodes in addition to Energy Evolution's typical weekly schedule for the duration of CERAWeek, featuring guests attending the conference. Energy Evolution has merged with Platts Future Energy, and episodes are now regularly published on Tuesdays.

Revelation 1:1-8 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show to His bond-servants, the things which must soon take place; and He sent and communicated it by His angel to His bond-servant John, 2 who testified to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, everything that he saw. 3 Blessed is the one who reads, and those who hear the words of the prophecy and keep the things which are written in it; for the time is near. 4 John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before His throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood— 6 and He made us into a kingdom, priests to His God and Father—to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. The Apostle Paul told Timothy, “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.” [1 Tim 1 v.15] That salvation was only possible through his sacrifice on the cross, a sacrifice that brought an end to all the sacrifices of animals and the use of their blood on the altar that we have been reading about in Leviticus. But that was not the only reason Jesus came into the world! The point is very clearly made in today's chapter in Luke (4). As Jesus moved around Israel many were attracted by his healings. “…all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on them …and healed them … The people … would have kept him from leaving them, but he said to them. ‘I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.”[v.40,42,43] But were they listening to “the good news”? The people of Capernaum, in particular, who had been “exalted to heaven” [Luke 10 v.15] by their witnessing of heavenly deeds and hearing his message, were rejected for their failure to change their lives and really follow him. After Jesus rose from the dead he showed he was alive “by many proofs, appearing to them during 40 days and speaking about the kingdom of God.” {Acts 1 v.3] The Apostles continued his message; note how the very last verse in Acts tells us that Paul was “proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness …”This message was an integral part of the Sermon on the Mount, “Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth” [Matt. 5 v.5] The way the meek, i.e., the gentle minded, will inherit the earth is for Jesus to return and establish his kingdom on the earth. Those who decide to follow Jesus must have this purpose also – sharing his message of hope for our ever more troubled world. Let us not be attracted and distracted by the essentially purpose-less pursuits of the world around us but show by what we say and do that we are following in his footsteps.
Be Bold & Fight Your Battles (Be Bold Series)Hebrews 12:1-2 "Therefore, since we are encompassed with such a great cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. Let us look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.Two years ago, I was away on a retreat with 20 other Christian women who are all dedicated to starting their year off right and turning their focus to God. Each year in Big Life Mentoring, shout out to Pamela Crim, we each pick a word and mantra. Our word and manta is what we say every day to help remind us of the commitments we made to ourselves to live as the best version of ourselves. This New Year's retreat that I was on for the last 5 days was a chance to talk about what we want to get out of this year and also to form a great bond and friendship with several other ladies. These ladies can be our accountability group and support throughout the whole year. We know what each and every lady on this retreat wants this year, and we can pray for them and their goals. This was my first year going to this retreat. It was an amazing weekend. I love it when women who love Jesus get together to talk and get to know each other. We played worship music and walked to the beach at night to look at the stars and thank God for all He has done. We all talked about our strengths and our areas for improvement. We discussed where we are struggling and what we want from this upcoming year. We discussed what we would do to help make those wants a reality. It was really good girl bonding time, and everyone loved it. While I was on this retreat, several ladies talked about how they have that negative voice in their head so often. You know the voice I am talking about, the one that says you are not enough, the one that says God would never forgive you, the one that makes you feel awful about yourself. That voice that makes you question every decision you have ever made. That voice that makes you feel like you don't belong. We all have our own version of the mean voice inside our head. This verse tells us that we can look to those around us as witnesses. I saw so many witnesses that weekend on the New Year's retreat. The women who were on the retreat were truly amazing. We all struggle with different things and are all good at other things. We can look to each other for help with our struggles. Who in your life could be a witness? Who in your life could you look to for an example of how to live? The people in my prayer group are also great witnesses. They are all excellent examples of how to be the face of Christ to others. In the 6 years I have been in this prayer group, they have taught me much about God and His love. Look to those around you and learn all you can from them! This next line is the one that really made me think this was the verse for today. It says, “Let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” That is a powerful statement and one that we all need to remember when we have so many burdens in life. We have so much that can go wrong each day. If we can lay aside everything weighing on us and run the race with endurance, life will be much easier. The verse also asks us to lay aside the sin that so easily entangles us. This is a very true statement of how sin works. We tend to get entangled in it. We make one bad choice and then another; before we know it, we are wrapped up in sin, regret, and shame. This verse is telling us to lay our burdens and sins aside. The question is, “How do we do that?” How do we lay our burdens aside? How do we avoid getting entangled in sin? The answer is right in this verse. “Let us look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.” Jesus is the author of our faith. He can show us the way. We can learn much just by looking at Jesus and how He lived. We can also look to Jesus when we are trying to find the strength to lay our burdens aside. We can look to Jesus when we are trying to find a way to make it through the day. That weekend, there were at least two ladies who said they were afraid that the enemy was stronger than they were. This is a real fear that many of us have. The truth is, the enemy probably is stronger than we are, but he is definitely not stronger than God is. God has already won that battle and come out as the victor. When we start to get scared that the enemy might be getting stronger than we are, we can remember Romans 8:31 “…If God is for us, who can be against us?” This is the truth that we need to keep reminding ourselves. If God is for us, who can be against us? God is for you and me and each one of His children. Yes, you, you are His child. Even when you don't feel worthy, even when you don't feel you deserve it, even when you feel like you can't possibly be good enough to be his son or daughter, He is for you. God doesn't need us to feel good enough for Him to love us. He always loves us! He is always our Father, and we are always His children. One thing we did several times this weekend was listen to worship music. We listened when we were in the hot tub, when we were at the beach, and while we were getting up in the morning. We surrounded ourselves with worship music. One song played several times and is one that I think is a great song for us all to remember when we are struggling with the thoughts that the enemy might overtake us. This song is called “Surrounded (Fight my battles)" by Michael W. Smith. What I love about this song is the way it tells us how to fight our battles and then reminds us that God is there with us. Here are the main lyrics:… The word says"For the spirit of heavinessPut on the garment of praise"That's how we fight our battles (yeah)… This is how I fight my battlesThis is how I fight my battles (yeah, yes)This is how I fight my battles (what we're doing tonight)This is how I fight my battlesJust when you think you're lost… It may look like I'm surrounded but I'm surrounded by You, hey!It may look like I'm surrounded but I'm surrounded by YouIt may look like I'm surrounded but I'm surrounded by YouIt may look like I'm surrounded but I'm surrounded by You This is a great thing to remember. When we feel overwhelmed by the attacks of the enemy, we can remind ourselves that although it feels like we are surrounded on all sides by the enemy, we are actually surrounded by the Lord our God. The song repeats these verses over and over again. It is so relaxing and peaceful when I listen to this song. I hope you take the time to listen to it because I know it can bring you peace, too! Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, be with us and help us feel you surrounding us. When we feel the enemy is greater than we are, help us remember that we aren't in this alone. Help us to remember you are there, surrounding us and protecting us. Spiritual warfare is real, and we are in a battle, whether we realize it or not. We will fight that battle, lifting up praise to You as You surround us. We love you so much, Lord; you are amazing!! You are so powerful, and we are so grateful that you already won the war over evil. You conquered death, and sin no longer has dominion over us now. Thank you, Lord! We praise you, and we thank you. You are awesome, and we are in awe of you. We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. Dave Myers discusses Matthew 5:4—“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
I know a number of caregivers or spouses who are going through some really hard changes right now. Maybe that's you; maybe it's someone you love. You're exhausted, sad, angry, or just numb. You're coming to terms with a new diagnosis, a deteriorating condition, hard changes in a relationship, a difficult move or adjusting to the loss of someone central in your life, someone you love very much. I'm amazed by the number of friends I have who are caring for parents whose lives have changed in hard ways. What does God's word say about the idea of change in the lives of his people? It didn't take me five minutes to come up with a list of 100 verses about a heavenly perspective on change. God has a lot to say about it. In invite you to think on these things.God is unchanging. Let him be your anchor.Malachi 3:6 – “For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.”Hebrews 13:8 – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”Following Christ involves a continual process of change, where we grow in holiness and leave behind our old ways.Romans 12:2 – “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”2 Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”Life is full of transitions, but God is sovereign over them all.Ecclesiastes 3:1 – “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” When facing change, we're called to trust in God's guidance rather than their own understanding.Isaiah 43:19 – “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Even when change feels overwhelming, God is faithful to complete the work He has begun in us.Philippians 1:6 – “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”Joshua 1:9 – “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” According to the Bible, change is inevitable, but we are assured that God is in control and that His purposes will be fulfilled.Today I'm encouraging you to believe God is with you and he goes ahead of you wherever life is changing…in the positive changes and in the hard changes. Especially when change is hard, lean into the people and the places that will remind you of this. Guard what goes in your ears and your eyes. All of that affects your spirit and your outlook. Look for his hand. Trust his provision and his good plans for you. That's a focus on gratitude. Sending you love and light today. I hope you can feel it, and I hope you share it, even as seasons change, as sunlight comes and goes, and you reflect on the blessings in your mess.Resources:My website: www.lorischlosser.comMy Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/lorischlosserspeaksMy Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/lorischlosserspeaks/Blessed in This Mess can be accessed on all major streaming platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Spotify.

The fear of God is described as the beginning of wisdom, knowledge and a way to avoid evil. Therefore, actively turn yourself over to the sincere fear of the Lord and gain God's benefits. What can we expect when we seek Him? Joy, mercy and faithfulness, refreshment, and continual trust in God. Keep revering, seeking, and obeying the Lord!

Today's episode explores the themes of Lent, particularly focusing on the Ember Days and the significance of the Beatitudes. Msgr. Timothy Cronin joins Adam to discuss the importance of mourning and comfort in the context of faith, emphasizing the call to self-sacrifice and spiritual growth during this season. They encourage listeners to reflect on their own lives and how they can embody the teachings of Christ, especially in times of suffering and difficulty. Takeaways Ember Days are a time for fasting and reflection during Lent. The Beatitudes offer paradoxical teachings that challenge our understanding of suffering and comfort. Mourning can lead to deeper compassion for others in their suffering. Prayer is a powerful tool for supporting those in need. Self-sacrifice is essential in our relationship with God and others. Growing closer to God is the measure of a good Lent. Grace is always at work, even when we don't see it. We are called to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world. Recognizing the suffering of others can lead to meaningful connections. Lent is an opportunity to let go of distractions and focus on spiritual growth. Download the Covenant Network app today! March 12 2025 Wednesday Your Words Matter / Week 06 I Am Blessed In Him #findoutwhoyouare My Vision My vision is to teach the world Who They Are In Jesus Christ their Lord and Savior! To Teach them what the Bible says about them and who they have been made to be in the promises of God's Word. This changed my life years ago and completely transformed me from a person full of doubt, fear and unbelief to a strong confident Christian that knows I can do anything through Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior. And I'm determined to teach the world what God has taught and commissioned me to teach and that is His Word. That commission takes me to jails and detention centers weekly along with other open doors at many churches and ministries that are wanting to teach these important truths to the world. My podcast goes out 6 days a week to help the people I am ministering to grow in the truths that God has taught me for many years now. This podcast is free to all that want to listen and grow strong in who God has made them to be in Christ Jesus their Lord and Savior. My Prayers For The World Ephesians 1:15-23 NLT 'Ever since I first heard of your strong faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for God's people everywhere, I have not stopped thanking God for you. I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance. I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God's power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God's right hand in the heavenly realms. Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come. God has put all things under the authority of Christ and has made him head over all things for the benefit of the church. And the church is his body; it is made full and complete by Christ, who fills all things everywhere with himself.' Ephesians 3:14-21 NLT 'When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God's love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.' Matthew 11:28 Find Rest In Jesus Christ Your Lord and Savior… Mark 10:29-30 100 Fold Return… Psalm 37:4 God will give you the desires of your heart… The Galations, having launched their Christian experience by faith, seem content to leave their voyage of faith and chart a new course based on works—a course Paul finds disturbing. His letter to the Galations is a vigorous attack against the gospel of works and a defense of the gospel of faith. Paul begins by setting forth his credentials as an apostle with a message from God: blessing comes from God on the basis of faith, not law. The law declares men guilty and imprisons them; faith sets men free to enjoy liberty in Christ. But liberty is not license. Freedom in Christ means freedom to produce the fruits of righteousness through a Spirit-led lifestyle. The 2nd of the seven Penitential Psalms is Psalm 32. It is one of the clearest statements of the doctrines of repentance, justification and forgiveness in the Old Testament. It is closely related to Psalm 51. It appears that this psalm, like Psalm 51, was written to express David's repentance after the prophet Nathan had confronted him with his sins of adultery and murder (2 Samuel 12). Psalm 32 clearly contrasts the way in which the world considers a person to be blessed with the way God actually blesses people.
In this episode, we interview William Hughes. Bill, as he asked us to call him, is a retired pastor in England. His call to the ministry and the gentleness of his character will be evident as you listen to this interview. We were introduced to Pastor Hughes through SermonAudio, which has an archive of over 600 of his sermons. One of our favorite messages, "Blessed are the Meek," is a good place to start. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did.
Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Father Dave notes how Jesus' use of “blessed” in the Sermon on the Mount may seem strange to us. God offers hope beyond one's current suffering, and we are called to lift others up in our world. Preached at St. Paul the Apostle Church, Los Angeles, CA on 2-16-25

Yes you are in! Did you get attacked this week? Welcome to the club. For we are guilty of both. Why? You know we are in the Hope and Encouragement business. Part of Hope is learning and understanding flaws yours and mine. Here is your Play of the Day...Thank you Pastor Rick Warren for another mic drop. We don't have an official count yet I believe you are our mic drop leader. Lots of wisdom in Daily Hope. What a teacher. God has blessed you for an extended season of wisdom.Opening hook, Best Life by Marcus Rogers.Okay, how about you? Does that make sense? Avid listener you know I play the Rom 3:23 card pretty much every week. Why? Because we are ALL flawed. Ok, some more than others yet that verse explains a LOT! Most of us attract people with our best behavior. Then, over time, our flaws get exposed. Flaws = friction. The best relationships you know don't avoid friction. They just navigate friction very well. Whether you believe in Jesus Christ or not, your relationships will not last without implementing his teachings. Matt 7: 24-27 is one of my favorites. Jesus' words...What are Jesus' teachings, fruits of the Spirit: Grace, Forgiveness, Serving one another, Love, Choosing to Love.Blessed are the peacemakers. Doesn't mean you are supposed to be besties with everyone. Some people you are best to keep your distance. As for those that you took an oath in marriage in front of God or your children or best friends, you will navigate friction well by following Jesus' teachings. Lori and I have been married for 30+ years now. Jesus is the reason and why we have navigated some very hard times/storms. Share what works. Confession, My worst holes dug and I have dug some biggies have come when leaning on my own understanding and pride. Tough Love is part of love. Jesus gave tough love. If you listen to the rest of that Daily Hope, "What Destroys Relationships and What Builds Them Up, Part 3", published on 7 March 2025, Pastor Rick gets into it. As the saying goes, friends tell you what you want to hear. True friends will lovingly tell you what you need to hear. Confession, I have lost friends over this. Not everyone wants to hear what they should hear. For the record, I will welcome them back with open arms. I will also keep telling them what they need to hear. Their choice to stick around. How do you know if you are sharing great advice? Crucial question. Let the Owner's Manual for Life be your guide. Then let those that know the Owner's Manual for Life best also be your quality control. James 5:19-20 says, "My brothers and sisters, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sinsProverbs 12:1New International Version12 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.Matthew 18:15-17New International VersionDealing With Sin in the Church15 “If your brother or sister[a] sins,[b] go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.'[c] 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector. When in doubt, Matt 22: 36-40

In a world that values power and control, Jesus teaches a different way: “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5). In this message, Pastor JP Wilson unpacks the strength found in humility and how true power comes through surrender to God.
The intensity of spiritual thought to be found in Psalm 119 invites our deepest reflection and meditation. The Psalmist is contemplating how the reality of his relationship with God penetrated all spheres of his life. As we read this Psalm it impels us to treasure God's word as the springboard of all our really worthwhile meditation. “How sweet are your words to my taste. Sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way”[v.103,104]How much does our meditation lead us to hate every false way? The philosophy of today is not to “hate” anything, everything is to be tolerated. The uninspired human heart stumbles along in its blindness. Can we say with the Psalmist, “Oh how love I thy law! It is my meditation all the day … I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation.” [v.97.99] He tells God, “Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart” therefore “I hate the double minded, but I love your law.” [v.111,113] What a human inclination it is these days to be double-minded, our politicians are good at that, but they are only reflecting the attitudes of the many, but the Psalmist, who – let us not forget – is addressing God, says, “All the wicked of the earth you (will) discard like dross, therefore I love your testimonies. My flesh trembles for fear (awe) of you …” [v.119, 120] and asks, “Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love.” [v.124]Do we ask that? Our readings in Luke's Gospel details one person who was particularly aware of that – and overwhelmed by that! We read yesterday of Mary saying, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices…” Today we read the testimony of the shepherds who came to see the babe lying in a manger and told Mary of their experience and what they had heard. And Mary “treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart” [2 v.19]. When Mary and Joseph bring the babe to Jerusalem, Simeon a “righteous and devout man …. Blessed them and said to Mary…. Behold this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed … so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed” [v.25,34,35]Thoughts revealed? Well, just look at the reactions of those jealous of Jesus! Look at the heart searchings of those who started to follow him and then left (John 6 v.60, 66) Yes, God can read all thoughts, he can see how well we are responding to the teaching of Jesus and whether we are meditating like the Psalmist! Or are we meditating at all? It takes someone like David to meditate all the day?But God knows what is happening in our hearts. Your heart?
31 At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to [Jesus], “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.” 32 He said to them, “Go and tell that fox for me, ‘Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. 33 Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.' 34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.' ”

This Lent text opens with some Pharisees warning Jesus, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.”Kiri and I ask Dr. Chris Croghan what are the religious leaders' motivation in warning him about a political threat? The key is in Jesus' response: we think it's our action that makes us right with God, but it's not. It's God's action. God doesn't desire sacrifice, he desires your heart. We want to avoid the consequence of our sin; God wants to deliver his forgiveness and mercy.HOLY WEEK GUIDE“The cross stands before us, and the empty tomb beyond it. Nothing will ever be the same. The road is narrow now. The hosannas will fade like the last notes of a half-remembered song, and in their place comes a malevolent, oppressive evil. Holy Week is upon us, and there is no turning back.”As we enter into Lent, we know that Holy Week lies on the other side of these 40 days. And though its completion is marked with triumphant joy, there is no “skip to the end” option here. The only way out is through, but it is not even our burden to bear — “We come only to hear, to receive, to be repented.”As you prepare for Holy Week, we invite you to take advantage of our brand new, free Holy Week Planning Guide, courtesy of Pastor Mark Anderson, which includes weekly planning outlines, Bible studies, activities, liturgies, and hymns.
