The Pharisees believed that by strictly obeying the law (cleaning the outside of the cup) they were acceptable to God (by having an inward cleanliness). Jesus sets them straight by reminding them of the weightier matters of the law - justice, mercy, & faith. Despite their hard work and effort, because their hearts had not been changed they were still dead on the inside.

The truth is, we make cultural adaptations to our faith all the time. But Christ is clear: “Take up your cross and follow me.” You cannot do that 95%. It is a complex problem, but God’s grace allows us to deal with the complexity of living in Christ today.
