Did you know Minnesota is home to the largest collection of Sherlock Holmes books and media in the entire world? It got its start in a funny way. Fifty years later, the curators of the collection at the University of Minnesota are holding an anniversary celebration to look back on the iconic role the Sherlock Holmes stories have held in mystery storytelling from the late 1800s to 2024. Tim Johnson is the curator of the Sherlock Holmes Collections at the University of Minnesota. He joined the show to discuss the appeal of Sherlock Holmes and his fan club that's been going strong at UMN since the 1930s.

Did you know where the largest collection of Sherlock Holmes ephemera is located? This answer is elementary, my dear listeners--or maybe not. It's actually the University of Minnesota Special Collections. And this week's guest is one of the foremost experts in all things Sherlock Holmes, my good friend Tim Johnson. We jump in on Guy Ritchie's 2009 adaption as well as talk about other film adapations (including the Great Mouse Detective, natch) as well as talk about the process of collecting and archiving such a magnificent collection. This is a really cool conversation.About our guest:Tim is one of the curators in the Archives and Special Collections Department and responsible for the University of Minnesota Libraries' main rare book collection and dozens of special collections. Half of his time is spent as curator of the Sherlock Holmes Collections, the largest gathering of such material in the world. Tim began his career as an instructional services librarian and has also served as a library director, director of archives, medical librarian, assistant and associate professor. In addition to his curatorial responsibilities, he served for ten years as an adjunct faculty member in the MLIS program at St. Catherine University, where he taught a graduate level course in preservation management. Tim is happy to answer questions and help out with matters related to "old books" or any other question people might have about special collections or rare materials. “a ramble through the Ragged Shaw” [PRIO]  As the curator of the Sherlock Holmes Collections at the University of Minnesota Libraries, Tim Johnson has seen just about everything. Almost as much as John Bennett Shaw saw. When he was putting on his conferences and chatting with the various attendees, Shaw noticed something: there wasn't a definitive list of what every Sherlockian Library should have.  Based on his observations, wide network, and endless library, Shaw developed a list of some 100 books, periodicals, and other material with which every Sherlock Holmes enthusiast should be familiar. This became known as The Shaw 100. Over time, items were added and others deleted. We talk with Tim about how the collection and the list came to be, what significant changes occurred, and what a Shaw 100 list of 2021 might look like. Can you guess what might be on it?   Well, we've done it. We've finally produced a mega-episode. And what better topic to go all epic on you than the outsized at the University of Minnesota Libraries? Our guest this episode is Tim Johnson, Curator of Special Collections and Rare Books & E. W. McDiarmid Curator of the Sherlock Holmes Collections at the University of Minnesota Libraries. Tim gives us a nice history of the  and the beginnings of the Sherlock Holmes Collections at the university, which was made possible through a number of personal relationships. It includes the additions from the collections of James Iraldi, Philip Hench, Edith Meiser, John Bennett Shaw and Allen Mackler that have contributed to the basis of the vast and varied items that number more than 60,000. We discuss much about the collections, including the challenge for a curator of books / librarian when it comes to looking after objects that go far beyond the printed page, as well as the changing nature of donor relations with respect to special collections. But we would have been remiss if we didn't spend time on John Bennett Shaw, BSI ("The Hans Sloane of My Age"), who was affectionately known as The Grand Acquisitor and who had all of the collecting discernment of a vacuum cleaner. Tim opines on what's next for collectors and the Collections alike, and gives us a hint as to what to expect as far out as 2016.
