Send us a textRISKYSometimes you gotta say, “What the Fuck” to research, make your move. This week Season 14's penultimate 1x1 is co-host Ryan's pick: RISKY BUSINESS (1983). His reason: TGTPTU normally pairs filmographies of a single director or actor, and the writer-director on this film was so triggered by the experience of having his written, shot, and edited original ending replaced in the final cut that he never directed another film again… or at least not until his second film in 1990 (WTF, Ryan?).  This film that would go on to become part of 1980s iconography by first-time director Paul Brickman, who had previously written the Michael Pressman-directed The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training (1977) and the Jonathan Demme-directed Handle with Care (1977) and would later be one of three credited writers on Clint Eastwood's True Crime (alternately known as Speed Zoo) (1999), Risky Business as dark teen comedy and potential Reagon-era satire stars a number of early roles by actors who'd become comedy stars of the 1980s, including as the protagonist Joel's fellow yuppie North Shore friends and entrepreneuring high school seniors in their first film appearances Curtis Armstrong (also known as Booger in the 1980s) and Bronson Pinchot (aka Balki in the 80s). It costars Rebecca De Mornay (later in the 90s known for her roles as a terrible nanny and as Milady de Winter) as the business-savvy prostitute, and has an early movie appearance by Joey Pants (known in the late-90s for taking the blue pill, Ralphie Cifaretto in the 00s, and a Bad Boy 4 life) as Guido the pimp.   Oh, and it's also the first time that actor born Thomas Mapother IV, better known later in life by his stage name Tom Cruise, stars in the leading role in a film (but not the first time he danced in his underwear or kissed a female person, if DVD commentary tracks are to be believed).  Behind the camera, you have two cinematographers: Eastwood's 70s and early-80s collaborator Bruce Surtees as well as regular Hollywood comedy lenser Reynaldo Villalobos. Pod-favorite Tangerine Dream scores. And the film scores big with first watches by host Tom and guest host Jack and with the Gen X'ers Ken and Ryan.   It's a wild ride, so mind your parking brake. In this episode Ryan explains the economic milieu behind the 80's yuppie culture to the two young hosts while drawing comparisons to American Psycho (2000); the two Zoomers discover how to shorten future episodes; and Broom Hilda's creator, whose life strangely overlaps with Ken's past and present, drops by studio.  Our podcast is The Good, The Pod, and The Ugly. We deal in human fulfillment. We grossed over eight thousand listeners in one night. This time around Busey plays Archie - a VR software developer guy who hates dogs and is mean... or something. This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana discuss the 1985 comedy classic Better Off Dead.   In this John Cusack-starring vehicle, we learn that attempted suicide is hilarious, as our star nerd (who is also a great skier and pro sax player) gets dumped by some dope.  He also doesn't realize there is a much hotter foreign exchange student living right across the street from him, being held hostage by Dan Schneider (art imitating life?).  As always, Curtis Armstrong plays a great second banana, with the best lines in the movie.  We all had a blast discussing this one, so please watch the movie first and then listen to the podcast. The Dark Mark Show got in touch with its inner nerd as Mark and Hannah welcomed Julia Montgomery who played Betty Childs in Revenge of the Nerds and actor/cosplayer Brett Gustafson to the lighter side of the dark side. Julia recounted growing up in New Jersey where she was a teenage model and acted in high school alongside classmate Jason Alexander quite a bit. She made some forgetful films before her big break in Revenge of the Nerds. She talked all about auditioning for the movie, the chaotic and sexually charged atmosphere on the set, how director Jeff Kanew's encouragement of improvisation made the movie the classic that it is today, some surprising tension with Robert Carradine and really surprising revelations about Curtis Armstrong aka Booger. She also tackles the movie's sketchy morality in today's time, what 80s conventions are like, the Nerd sequels and what it is like to work with Sylvester Stallone and Ed Harris and so much more. Brett came dressed as a nerd as only he can, discussed meeting Hannah for the first time when he first got to Hollywood, talked about getting a commercial where they only used his hands, how his training as a mime came in handy, and had a great story about being accosted at an Anime convention while dressed as the cartoon character Doug. Stand-up comedian Jamie Gendron also called in to tell Julia what an inspiration she was to her. What a nerd! A film that boldly asks “What if we made a good version of Ferris Buehler's Day Off?” It has all the beats of a John Hughes teen movie—especially that one—while actually saying something about America, capitalism, and class. It's the film that made Tom Cruise a star, and unfortunately is saddled in pop culture memory with one very silly dance scene that has very little to do with what's otherwise a very dark, funny, nervy movie about facing adulthood and disillusionment. A smarter film than expected, it eviscerates the model of “teen goes wild when his parents are away and has to set everything back the way it was before they get home” just as that template was being set for teen comedies. Starring Tom Cruise, Rebecca De Mornay, Curtis Armstrong, Bronson Pinchot, Joe Pantoliano, and Richard Masur. Written and directed by Paul Brickman.

Who's That Girl? A New Girl Podcast

This podcast covers New Girl Season 3, Episode 19, Fired Up, which originally aired on March 11, 2014 and was written by Sophia Lear and directed by Steve Welch. Here's a quick recap of the episode:Jess gets Coach a job at her school as the volleyball coach, but then has to fire him. Schmidt gets sued so Nick and Winston pose as his lawyers while Cece meets a new, younger guy. We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Winston shared “he can't enough of this legal drama” and shared his favorite author was John Grisham and favorite TV show was Judging Amy. John Grisham Judging AmyAdditional Pop Culture References such as:When Schmidt is reviewing where his stuff should go, the following were shared: Ian Schrager Rug - Schmidt didn't want this rug in a room without climate control. Ian Schrager is an American entrepreneur, hotelier and real estate developer, credited for co-creating the "boutique hotel" category of accommodation. In his hotels, Schrager understood the importance of a place's appearance and energy. As part of Schrager's larger organization, the Ian Schrager Group, they would commission rugs and carpets for their hotels to create the atmosphere. Star Wars - Nick didn't know who Ian Schrager was and thought he was “the guy in Star Wars”. Nick may have been confusing Ian Schrager with Ewen McGregor who starred in the Star Wars movies Episode 1, 2, and 3. Star Wars is an American epic space opera multimedia franchise created by George Lucas and  is one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time. The franchise has been expanded into various films and other media, including television series, video games, novels, comic books, theme park attractions, and themed areas, comprising an all-encompassing fictional universe.Kristi Yamaguchi - Dr. Foster shared how he's into Asian women like Kristi Yamaguchi. Kristine “Kristi” Yamaguchi is an American former figure skater. In ladies' singles, Kristi is the 1992 Olympic champion, a two-time World champion, and the 1992 U.S. champion. In 1992, she became the first Asian American woman to win the gold medal in a Winter Olympic competition. The Da Vinci Code - One of the teachers yelled to burn all the books in the library except for The Da Vinci Code, which is a 2003 mystery thriller novel by Dan Brown. The Da Vinci Code follows symbologist Robert Langdon and cryptologist Sophie Neveu after a murder in the Louvre Museum in Paris causes them to become involved in a battle between the Priory of Sion and Opus Dei over the possibility of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene having had a child together. The novel is a worldwide bestseller that sold 80 million copies as of 2009 and has been translated into 44 languages. The book was also adapted into a film starring Tom Hanks in 2006. We also cover when Schmidt and Nick are arguing about the “caboose of life” as our “Schmidtism” in this episode. For “Not in the 2020s” we discuss Dr. Foster's comments about being exclusively into asian women and Mike saying he had “quite an eye for young boys”. In our “Yes in the 2020s” we discuss Jess standing up to keep Coach's job. We also give a brief look into Matt Price (Bill Berklan), Lauri Johnson (Stenographer), and Rob Kerkovich (Tim), the guest stars we feature in this episode. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Ben Falcone (Mike - Previously Discussed in S3E13), Curtis Armstrong (Principal Foster - Previously Discussed in S2E24), Brian Posehn (Biology Teacher - Previously Discussed in S3E11), James Frecheville (Buster), Matt Fusfeld (Douchey Guy), Helen Hong (Teacher), Kim Yarbrough (Another Teacher), Michelle N. Additionally, we reference this article that came out in 2014 discussing the writer's take on how they framed Coach vs. Winston. We did not find the bear this episode. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode when:Buster is trying to prove that he's from Wyoming, but he mentions the following references to Wyoming and other states in the US:Cowboy State - Wyoming is called the Cowboy State as it is known for its rodeo, the town where Hemingway spent time living and writing, and the inspiration for the series Longmire.Big Sky Country - Big Sky Country is another name for Montana which is known for its mountains, lakes, and wide-open country. The first of two TV movies in the Nerds series (according to Curtis Armstrong's memoir, these also served as backdoor pilots for Revenge of the Nerds TV shows that never got off the ground), Revenge of the Nerds III: The Next Generation manages to introduce a lot of new characters but focuses more on the old ones. Now a reformed nerd, yuppie Lewis has to confront his nerd past when the bully Stanley comes back into his life as a friend. There are some fun cameos in here (Clancy Brown as a gas station attendant comes to mind), but the new nerds being a lot less well developed than the old nerds makes for a sometimes jarring plot. A court case at the end brings to mind the heroic speech at the end of the original film. For a sanitized made-for-TV version of the Nerds, Revenge of the Nerds III isn't half bad. We bring the summer to a close with a very silly "Savage" Steve Holland movie starring John Cusack as a cynical cartoonist and Demi Moore as the singer he helps to save her family home on Nantucket. Sure, it's frequently juvenile, but it's a fun movie, features Bobcat Goldthwait, Joe Flaherty, Joel Murray, and Curtis Armstrong. We ask why Goldthwait is funny, what's the deal with Demi Moore's hair, and what is up with William Hickey, who may or may not be in a Weekend-At-Bernies situation.

“Now, then, listen to this” [SIGN]  Earlier this month, Audible and Treefort Media released a ten-part podcast, Moriarty: The Devil's Game, written by Charles Kindinger and starring Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, Phil Lamarr, Adam Godley, and Lindsay Whisler, with a special appearance by Curtis Armstrong. The story takes what we know from the traditional Holmes-Moriarty archrivalry and turns it on its head, getting us to familiar territory by taking a very different route indeed. Charles Kindinger joined us for an interview to talk about the inner workings of this Audible Original production, what inspired him to write it, and how he managed to tread the fine line of not alienating traditional Holmes fans while presenting a new theory. The Canonical Couplet quiz is available to test your wits just after the interview; if you correctly guess the story we're referring to, you'll be eligible for a drawing for some choice items from the IHOSE vaults. A Place For My Stuff - Yes I have/had another podcast.  A couple of podcasts actually.  With the rising price of everything, I opted not to pay to have Inside the Guest Studio available forever.   I have this convenient landing spot called My Alien Life Podcast which WILL remain forever - thus, this is part of my life, as will be the episodes of Inside the Guest Studio.  A podcast that is graced by some unique and very talented people that live slightly off the grid. Enjoy Cameron   Larry Hankin has been on everything!!  He is known for his roles in TV shows Breaking Bad, Matlock, Friends (as Mr. Heckles) and Seinfeld (as Tom Pepper), as well as for his major role in Escape from Alcatraz (1979) with Clint Eastwood.  He also acted in How Sweet It Is! (1968) with Debbie Reynolds and James Garner and the Adam Sandler movie Billy Madison (1995). He had cameo appearances in three John Hughes films, Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987); She's Having a Baby (1988); and Home Alone (1990). He had brief appearances in Pretty Woman as the landlord (1990), as well as minor roles in Loose Shoes (1980), The Sure Thing (1985), and Running Scared (1986). Hankin also appeared in Married... with Children, as well as one of the Halloween specials of Home Improvement. Hankin also appeared in three episodes of Star Trek: Voyager as Gaunt Gary and one episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Hankin and Curtis Armstrong played the hippie entrepreneurs who purchased "Buy the Book" (the bookstore where the titular character works at) on Ellen. On Seinfeld, Hankin portrayed Tom Pepper, the actor cast as Kramer on the pilot-within-a-TV-show Jerry. He portrayed a homeless man in season 5 of Malcolm in the Middle. He then appeared again with Bryan Cranston in seasons three and five of Breaking Bad as junkyard owner Old Joe. He reprised his old role from Breaking Bad in the Netflix sequel film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.
