The Pixies’ album Doolittle was released thirty years ago this month. It’s an album that’s bursting with arresting-yet-mysterious imagery, captivating-yet-cryptic lyrics, and breathtakingly unexpected musical dynamics and departures. It’s an almost unbelievably dense, compact artistic statement that fascinates at first blush, and heavily rewards repeated listening. There’s a whole world in there. A world we’ll explore with Ben Sisario, who’s the author the book Doolittle, part of the 33 1/3 series. For his book, Ben interviewed front man Black Francis at a pivotal time in the Pixies’ story – just as they were reuniting in the 21st Century after a fifteen-year breakup. Doolittle was an underground sensation – bubbling just below the level of the hit parade. It left a lasting impression on generations of influential artists, and the rock genre as a whole.
On our debut episode, Grant Stovel welcomes musician Jeremy Dutcher. The classically trained operatic tenor and composer spent most of his 20's quietly crafting his stunning debut album Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa. The album blends his training in opera, and his contemporary musical sensibility, and features post-classical rearrangements of Wolastoq First Nation traditional music. The work recently took home Canada's top musical honour, the Polaris Music Prize, this past September. In this wide-ranging discussion, Jeremy talks about his musical upbringing, discovering the notable absence of classical music that reflects indigeneity, and uncovering the archival recordings that became foundational to his debut album. The podcast features three selections from the album: "Mehcinut", "Oqiton", and "Eqpahak".
This month at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, American singer-songwriter, poet, humanitarian and filmmaker Michael Franti graced the CKUA stage for music and conversation with Terry David Mulligan. Michael shares his thoughts on the power of optimism to overcome his anxiety and depression, his connection to the City of Edmonton, and finding peace amidst political turmoil in the US. Songs performed include "Enjoy Every Second" and "I'm Alive." Michael Franti & Spearhead's latest album 'Soul Rocker' is available on Fantasy Records.
Check it out as Brian sits down with his first out of towners! The wonderful sisters Stovel, Leah and Krista, were kind enough to pop by for a chat while in town for the Renegade Craft Fair. A fascinating discussion ensued as the girls told Brian about there upbringing on Widby Island and the in and outs of a burgeoning family business. Together with Avery Bloom the sisters own both Nell and Mary and Make It Good, which produce screen printed textile goods on fabric sourced in the USA. Nell and Mary's focus is home decor while Make it good is a clothing line.
