On this episode of Rebel Rockers with Native Wayne, we honor Sublime, the groundbreaking rock reggae trio from Long Beach. Blending punk, reggae, and hip-hop, Bradley Nowell, Eric Wilson, and Bud Gaugh crafted a sound that redefined music, with hits like "Date Rape" sparking their meteoric rise. Sublime's legacy endures through Sublime with Rome and the next generation led by Bradley's son, Jacob. Their DIY ethos and soulful authenticity created a timeless influence on music. Sublime inspired artists like No Doubt's Gwen Stefani, Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath, and Michael Franti. Their genre-defying music, led by Bradley's unique voice and powerful songwriting, remains a blueprint for rock reggae bands like Stick Figure and Rebelution. From underground gigs to chart-topping hits, Sublime's story is a testament to their artistry and the Long Beach roots that shaped them. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Join us for an inspiring conversation with singer-songwriter and guitarist Patti Spadaro. Patti shares her journey from the iconic clubs of Los Angeles to her current roots in Pennsylvania, discussing her music, teaching, and passion for empowerment. We delve into her latest single, "Glass Shatters," and explore how her soulful blend of rock, blues, and jam-band styles creates a space for connection and transformation.PATTI SPADARO brings a hopeful outlook to her introspective and heartfelt songwriting. Her band's live shows create a space where the music opens up into something huge... the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The music cuts through the everyday and connects right to the core. While living in Los Angeles, Patti released 3 albums and played LA's iconic clubs. She toured up and down the west coast & throughout the southwestern US. Her roots called Patti back to PA to raise a family. BRINGING ME BACK features drummers Eric Kurtzrock & Jim Donovan (Rusted Root), keyboardist Skip Sanders (The Clarks, Bill Deasy), and Jill Simmons singing harmony (Brown Eyed Women). The album features impressive musicianship and songs that reach deep. Songs about discovering what matters most. Standing up and living life from that place. Today on the show, we were a little slow after staying up to watch the Lions win their season opener. Do you know what these abbreviations mean? Big Joe got stuck in a dance circle at the Michael Franti concert. Jennifer from Grand Rapids played "Laura Can't Lose," and Big Joe is trying to find the money to buy Super Bowl tickets in case the Lions make it.
Welcome to Season 9! We begin this new season with a mini, four-episode non-grad series highlighting guests whose work is harmonious with the work and ethos of the Hoffman Process. Our first non-grad guest is musician, activist, and award-winning filmmaker, Michael Franti.** As you listen to Michael's life story, you'll hear him speak of his feelings of abandonment and being an outsider. These feelings echo much of the work done during a week at the Hoffman Process. With eloquence and an open heart, he tells us his story of adoption, living with alcoholic parents, and what healing these wounds can look like. His life story is beautiful. As Michael says, you'll see what a generous gift it is to tell one's story. Originally recorded as part of an ongoing collaboration with Modern Elder Academy, Michael and Drew met in person in Santa Fe to record this conversation. Chip Conley, co-founder of MEA, chimes in at the end. This is a deep, fun, vulnerable conversation. We hope you enjoy it! **Please note that this episode is marked explicit for language and some content. What's up fellas… In today's interview, I'm joined by Michael Franti, a father, husband, singer/songwriter and owner of Soulshine Bali. He has been spreading positivity and love through his music for almost 40 years. I had the incredible opportunity to sit down backstage in Asheville, NC, while he's on tour, stepping directly into his world, and exploring the highs and lows of his very full touring schedule and what it takes to balance fame and family. In this episode, we explore Michael's relationship with his fathers, and the impact they had on his life – while exploring Michael's heartfelt stories about raising kids, making music, dealing with anxiety and depression, and so much more. You'll also hear from his son Cappy, who joined us towards the end of the interview, who shared stories with reverence and honesty about growing up with Michael as his father. I could feel the love he has for his father, and also respected how he shared some of the pain we all experience as kids when we feel disconnected from our dads. As Michael believes, “There's no one you wouldn't love if you knew their story”. This episode is filled with true stories, touching moments and deep insights. I hope you enjoy my conversation with the one and only Michael Franti and make sure to roll down the windows of your car, turn on his playlist (Michael Franti and Spearhead) and sing your heart out. Today we are talking with ASCAP award-winning composer, Matt Bowen. We discuss his musical development from a classically trained violinist touring with a youth symphony to a full-time composer. We also dive into the compositional process behind his project, the Amazon Series "Gen V." Topics Include: • Matt's Background in violin • San Diego Youth Symphony • Learning harmonic structure • Do you know how to wrap cables? The value of an internship • The Importance of asking questions • Gen V: Threading the needle of spinoff music • Creating the Gen V “gritty” sound • How experience as an orchestrator helps with synthesized music • The members of the Gen V music team • Advice for aspiring musicians https://mattbowenmusic.com/ Matt Bowen is an ASCAP award-winning composer based in Los Angeles. A classically trained violinist from the age of three and later a member of a touring youth symphony, he ultimately shifted to working behind the scenes. He teamed up with record producer Matt Wallace (Maroon 5, Faith No More) and worked as an engineer on RIAA-certified platinum singles Michael Franti & Spearhead's "All Rebel Rockers" and O.A.R.'s "All Sides.” As composing projects continued to ramp up, he ultimately pivoted to composing full-time. Bowen recently scored Hulu's R-rated feature film THE BINGE starring Vince Vaughn and Skylar Gisondo. His work can be heard on the gritty Emmy Award-winning documentary BLOOD ROAD (Red Bull Media House). He also teamed up with Christopher Lennertz to co-score the Netflix TV series BEST WORST WEEKEND EVER. In addition to composing, Bowen has contributed as an arranger, orchestrator, and composer of additional music on a wide variety of projects for all mediums. He frequently works on Christopher Lennertz's music team on projects such as THE BOYS and BAD MOMS.

President Joe Biden owned TFG this morning when he issued his challenge for not just one, but TWO debates to happen in June and September. Surprisingly, TFG agreed...BUT then, true to form, he lied about a THIRD debate, hosted by Fox (NOT) News, saying he accepted that one too. But, true to form, he made it up. A third debate and especially one hosted by FOX was NEVER on the table. The poor schmuck just can't abide by anyone else's rules. Yesterday, Digby told me that the sycophants who are still cult members aren't even denying that TFG wears diapers. They've embraced it. And today I saw lots of evidence of that, which I'll share. You know that, if there was ever even an accusation that President Biden was suffering from fecal incontinence, the ridicule would never end. But for the orange turd they embrace the anal leakage (and, I guess, the reported stench that accompanies it). Now that you have that mental picture... We have a show today, but no guest. So we'll talk about the news and whatever is on our collective minds. The phone lines are open at 954-889-6410. If we get through all my stuff and you aren't calling in, I have an interview cued up from last summer when I spoke with the artist I'm going to see on Friday night, Michael Franti. At a time like we're living through right now, we could all use a shot of positivity. So I'm happy to replay that one... unless you have something more important we should discuss? --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message

My guests this week are Matt Wallace and Will Kennedy, the Grammy-winning immersive mixing team that has done spatial mixes for Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, The B-52s, Kid Rock, Selena Gomez and many more. Before entering into the spatial mixing world, Matt's work as a producer includes hits for Maroon 5, Faith No More, The Replacements, 3 Doors Down and O.A.R., while Will's credits includes One Republic, O.A.R, U2, Michael Franti and Spearhead and others. Matt and Will set up their Dolby-certified mixing studio in the same complex as the legendary Sound City Studio in 2021 and haven't looked back. During our interview Will and Matt talked about why analog recording experience is so valuable, the track that changed their perception of immersive audio, transitioning their studio to spatial mixing only, why rock is the hardest to mix in spatial audio, tag-team mixing, and so much more. I spoke with Matt and Will via zoom from their studio in Van Nuys, California.

We at The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast created our monthly sidecast, First Concert Memories, to give people a chance to share their passion for live music and how one particular rock show had a big impact on their life. FCM #8 is a glowing example of how a rock n roll show can regenerate and restore your passion for life after dark times. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Brian Colburn, a radio & podcast professional and host of My Weekly Mixtape, was commuting into New York City from New Jersey. While entering the LIncoln Tunnel, passengers were told that a plane had struck one of the World Trade Center towers and they would be rerouted back to their origin point. By the time they were back in New Jersey, both towers had crumbled. Like everyone in greater NYC, around the country and the world, Brian experienced a range of emotions and it took a long time to process that horror. However, on December 16, 2001, Brian saw that Blues Traveler, a New Jersey band he'd never seen live, were coming to the Roseland Ballroom that night. He called his buddies and within a couple of hours they were at the show. Hear Brian describe the feeling in the crowd as people tried to understand if it was OK to smile again, gather in a crowd and sing and dance to music you love. You'll get goosebumps as he describes John Popper playing the Star-Spangled Banner. You'll smile when you hear about Michael Franti joining Blues Traveler for a Bob Marley classic and Brian's encounter with him in the parking lot. And you'll tear up when you hear about the first responders who were honored on stage that night. This is why we created this podcast and we think you'll love Brian's story. In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Aliza Hava. I was honored to have the incredibly talented singer songwriter, Aliza Hava (“aLEEza Hah-vuh”) on my show. We talk about music, trauma, healing, life, and the state of our world today. Most importantly, we talk about the role in which music can play in our lives to help heal past trauma and help us connect with each other and God. Ethereal. Enlightening. Medicine for the soul. Aliza Hava interlaces the elements; earth and sky, fire and water. Her transcendent voice is reminiscent of the mystical tone of Stevie Nicks, the raw soul of Janis Joplin, and the gritty wisdom of Brandi Carlile. With her award-winning infusion of folk, rock, pop, and soul, Aliza heals the tiny forgotten bits of ourselves while rekindling our memories, setting our feet on the path back home, and calling us to rise into our best versions of ourselves. Featured on the soundtrack of Sharon Stone's award-winning documentary, Femme: Women Healing the World, which also features performances by Annie Lennox, Yoko Ono, and Rickie Lee Jones, Hava is a recipient of the Human Spirit Award presented by the international organization Talent for Humanity. Her story is featured in their book along with seven other internationally acclaimed artist/activists. The original recording of her song RISE can be heard on Occupy this Album: 99 Songs for the 99% alongside artists such as Ani DiFranco, Jackson Browne, and Warren Haynes. Hava has always sought to relay a message of healing and hope in her music. Seeking solace from a difficult childhood, she turned to music at an early age. Self-taught on a twenty-dollar used guitar, she found inspiration in an old songbook she discovered in her parent's basement, 'Great Songs of the 60s.' Fire-lit, Hava immersed herself in the history of the 60s and early 70s. The music, culture, and activism helped her discover her calling for healing and ignited a drive to write songs that could change the world. While in university studying Music Therapy, Aliza developed a strong inclination towards student activism and discovered a natural gift for concert production and community organizing. She began producing charity concerts featuring local bands for campus organizations like Students for a Free Tibet, and led drum circles in the infamous “Tripping Fields” behind the college where some of the greatest names in music once played, including the Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. With her college located just thirty miles from the town of Woodstock, Hava soaked up the culture and spirit that continued to permeate the region many decades later. She collaborated with local musicians, pulled all-nighters with her guitar around campfires, and earned herself the nickname, FireMusicFaerie. After college, Aliza began performing at and co-producing concerts at the United Nations headquarters in NYC. She earned a position as Chair of the UN International Day of Peace NGO Music Committee and went on to produce live concerts on six continents in partnership with over forty civic society, governmental, and environmental organizations. While living part-time in the Middle East, Hava represented UN-related peacebuilding initiatives and worked with Israeli and Palestinian musicians promoting peace and dialogue through music. She went on to produce the internationally live-streamed concert, Harmony in the Holy Land. This extraordinary event united Muslim, Christian, and Jewish musicians in a universal, musical prayer for peace from the heart of Jerusalem. Watching Palestinians and Israelis meet as strangers and part ways as friends, Aliza felt the reaffirmation of her calling to build bridges through the healing power of music. Hava has recently finished recording a new album at the iconic Revolver Recording Studios in Thousand Oaks, CA, produced by multi-platinum, Grammy winner Mikal Blue, who is best known for his work with Colbie Callait, Jason Mraz, and OneRepublic. The album is expected in Spring 2024 and features bassist Dean Dinning of Toad the Wet Sprocket as musical arranger and on bass/keys, and Gregg Bissonette (Ringo Starr, Santana) on drums. Her latest single, When the Children Cry, is a cover of White Lion's soulful ballad, and its message of peace is even more poignant today than it was when originally released in the late 80s. This song resonates through the generations with a message of healing and hope for the children of the world. In addition to writing her own music, Aliza collaborates with artists and songwriters and is a co-writer on Grammy-Award-winning artist Macy Gray's upcoming EP, produced by Mikal Blue. Throughout her journeys, Aliza has shared bills with world-class artists such as Dr. John, Michael Franti, Zac Brown Band, Rising Appalachia, and more. She has performed in the U.S., Canada, India, Morocco, Egypt, Italy, Australia, Jordan, Israel, and South Korea. With an inherent message of peace and universal love, Aliza considers her music and work a form of sacred activism. Her songs embody the power of music to uplift the mind, body, and soul while staying true to the ongoing practice of reclaiming our natural state. To find out more about Aliza, her story, and her music, check out her website at https://alizahava.com/.

Sonnet Simmons and Chris Assaad have a heart-filled discussion about the unfathomable depths of creative potential in music and how to dive right in with clarity and purpose. Chris Assaad is a multi-talented artist, singer-songwriter, wordsmith and speaker. His songs are pure alchemy that open the heart and inspire, connecting us to our wholeness and joy. His music soothes and seduces with exquisite layers of acoustic and electric acoustic guitars falling over R&B, reggae and soul-infused grooves serenaded by Chris's richly textured emotive vocals. Chris is an up-and-coming artist within the conscious music community and wellness & transformation movement opening up for artists such as Trevor Hall, Ayla Nereo, Michael Franti and Nick Mulvey. He has also collaborated live and in the studio with Mose and has been a featured guest on Lee Harris' Impact The World podcast and Portal Presents live series. He has been growing an international grassroots community, sharing his eclectic blend of soulful roots music, heart-opening songs and stories with audiences in Canada, Australia, the US & Europe playing concert and festival dates from Wanderlust Whistler to The Sound Dome in Sydney to the Great Hall in Toronto. Chris recently released his fourth studio album entitled GOLDEN in partnership with White Swan Records & Black Swan Sounds. His most raw and vulnerable album to date was recorded in Victoria, BC in collaboration with producer Joby Baker (Deva Premal & Miten, Alex Cuba & the Wailin' Jennys) who also produced Assaad's LION LP. Chris' artist journey began with a leap several years ago to follow his heart and passion for music. Just as he began exploring his love of singing and songwriting he was suddenly faced with a rapidly progressing hereditary hearing loss condition. Nearly two years and several surgeries later, Chris's hearing was restored and he was given a second chance, further cementing his path of a life dedicated to his artistry. He has become an inspirational voice for others to follow their creative and spiritual paths towards living a life they love. Chris has a deep passion and unique gift for supporting others in liberating their voice, amplifying their authentic self-expression and tapping into their infinite creative potential. As a facilitator and guide, Chris holds a powerful sacred space for healing and transformation, drawing upon years of experience, deep empathic attunement and intuitive guidance. He has developed his own Voice Alchemy method to help clients access the healing power of their voice, weaving practical tools, ancient wisdom and multiple healing modalities to bring forth the full potency of their unique soul song and expression. Chris is also the creator of Follow Your Art, a lovingly-crafted online program and detailed map to support the creative journey.
Recommend this show by sharing the link: pod.link/2Pages One of my favorite songs is Hole In The Bucket by Spearhead, the band fronted by Michael Franti. It's the story of someone walking along and deciding whether or not to give to someone else asking for a dime, for a nickel, for a quarter. As we approach the holiday season, perhaps you're wrestling with the same challenge as I am - what does it mean to be charitable? How altruistic are you willing to be? The holidays should be a time of light and joy, but they can also be a time where our shadow self takes over. Grief can come upon us in both expected and unexpected ways. This season, instead of stuffing our losses deep down, perhaps we can explore our feelings of sadness by exposing them to the light. As we take this journey through the rain, allow the tears to flow while you connect with what weighs on your spirit. By seeing our grief clearly, we can begin to untangle its hold on our hearts. From this place, we can step into the holidays with a lighter spirit and a clearer mind. Illuminate your grief and find your joy this season! Of course, I'm paraphrasing the old threat. The next line would be "what a shame if something should happen to it..." And that's where we are today.Perfect timing to have Thom Hartmann on the show to talk about his new book, THE HIDDEN HISTORY OF AMERICAN DEMOCRACY: REDISCOVERING HUMANITY'S ANCIENT WAY OF LIVING, the latest in his Hidden History series.Today, not only are we on the precipice of losing our democracy - as fragile and tenuous as it is , but Israel today is dangling over the edge, as Netanyahu is poised to turn that country into a theocracy run by conservative/ orthodox Jews who appear to be just fine with doing to the Palestinians what the Germans did to their ancestors. But I digress...Tom joins in at the bottom of the hour.In the first half, an update on what's happening in the world... maybe a Ketamine therapy update and a review of Michael Franti's uplifting concert Saturday night...
This week on No Simple Road we are super excited to have Trevor Hall as our guest! Raised on an island in South Carolina, singer/songwriter Trevor Hall realized at a young age that music was more than just a passion - it was his life's art. At sixteen, he recorded his first album. Shortly after, Hall left South Carolina for Idyllwild Arts Academy in California where he studied classical guitar and was introduced to the practices of yoga and meditation, which would greatly influence his life and his music. Hall's music, a blend of roots and folk music with touches of electronic elements, is imbued with a deep love of Eastern Mysticism. This powerful symbiosis fostered a deep connectivity with his growing fan base and Trevor quickly matured into a leader of the burgeoning conscious musical community. Along with numerous pilgrimages to India, he has sold out the historic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado as a headliner and he also completed a series of sold-out international tours with artists such as Ziggy Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Michael Franti, John Butler Trio, Matisyahu and Brett Dennen. We talk with Trevor about: How being an introvert at heart translates to being a musician. His experiences of getting signed to a major label at the age of 16 and how it affected him. How being treated like a 'product' took its toll on his mental state and self confidence. What the genesis of his spiritual journey looked like. Some of his experiences in traveling to India and practicing Yoga. How "the Great In Between' and the new album came to be. Last minute change of plans! My scheduled guest who was to talk about what happened to the radio and record industry had to reschedule. Usually that'd freak me out, but not today. When he called to cancel, I was in the middle of taping an interview with Michael Franti, the founder and leader of Michael Franti & Spearhead, and I've been a fan since their first album was released in 1994!He's in town for a show tomorrow night at the Pompano Beach Amphitheater, so we have a treat for you today. And we could use some feel-good energy right about now, which is exactly what Michael Franti brings...
Today's Song of the Day is "Big Big Love" the new single from Michael Franti & Spearhead, out now.
From his years touring, recording, and songwriting with MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD to his runs with BILLY PRESTON, SLY AND ROBBIE, OZOMATLI, BUSK!, PINK!, and other headliners, San Francisco guitar ace DAVE SHUL has been in demand for over three decades — especially by bandleaders who want some serious FUNK guitar in their ensemble. Inviting us into his San Francisco recording studio — which he shares with his good friend, the great drummer JAY LANE (DEAD & Co.) — Dave whips out a couple of Telecaster-style guitars for us to play and takes us on a deep exploration of what it means to throw down fat grooves on an electric guitar. Hosted and created by JUDE GOLD. THIS EPISODE IS PRESENTED BY GUITAR PLAYER MAGAZINE and GUITARPLAYER.COM. As a thank you for having us over, we present Shul with a G7th Performance Capo (with the title of this podcast laser-engraved into to the top of it) and a pair of Straptight Strap Locks.
Sarah saw Michael Franti over the weekend, Vinnie loved the Percy Jackson play that his daughter was in, and it was hot over the weekend!
Google is a little too convenient, Mother's Day is this weekend, Bryn hasn't been giving Kaia updates, Michael Franti is playing this weekend, and the Warriors lost!

I AM AN AUTHOR AND A SPEAKER. I founded and ran a nonprofit youth sports organization for 30 years called the Berkshire Baseball & Softball Club, which later became the BIG Vision Foundation. We ran teams, tournaments and a 130 acre sports complex. I loved every second of what I did. I loved working with kids and teaching them leadership skills and life lessons through sports and community service. I thought that I would have died doing what I loved. Then in 2019, I felt a calling from God for my wife, Sandy, and I. We decided to leave our comfort zone and start a new journey. A literal journey, selling most of our material things and setting out across this beautiful country in an RV with our golden retriever, Youkilis. Sounds crazy, but it was also destined to happen. You see I was raised by a hippy named Loretta Magary, she was a free spirit who quit her job and embarked on her own journey in the mid-1980's. Her journey started in a 1967 Plymouth Valiant with the back seat removed to make a bed and a .38 Special for protection and later evolved into a 1978 Toyota camper. After she passed away in 2005, we were able to experience a small part of her journey by going through her old photos and letters. The people that she met along the way were amazing. I'll be conducting speaking engagements and writing more books on our travels. More importantly, this is our chance to continue my mother's legacy of giving back through volunteering. We will tell the stories of the people that we meet along the way. This is truly “The Journey of My Mother's Son” and as Michael Franti says in the opening verse of his song, “Gloria,” “When many little people in many little places, Do many little things, then the whole world changes.” It will be our job to share and tell the stories of those “Many Little People” through this podcast and my writing. Some of the people that we interview may be famous, most will not be, but they'll all have a story to tell about the difference they're making. Some stories will still have a sports theme, others spiritual, some will be about music, others about food, some will talk about travel, but all will be about the many little people, in the many little places who are doing the many little things to make the whole world change. We pray that you enjoy these stories and are inspired to do your own little things to make this world a better place for all of us.
