So picture this: It's 1994. The Pixies had been music-world darlings for half a decade or so, releasing some incredible records before fizzling to a stop. Their enigmatic singer, Black Francis, changes his name (again—his parents named him Charles Thompson) to Frank Black and embarks on a solo career that feels a little vexing at the time. His self-titled debut felt deeply connected to his old band, but for the next one, he struck an even richer songwriting vein: The songs kept coming and they turned into the double album Teenager of the Year, recorded with a crack studio band that included Eric Drew Feldman of Pere Ubu both as a player and producer. Teenager of the Year wasn't particularly well received upon its release 30 years ago, but it has slowly been recognized as a high point in Black's career, celebrated as his masterpiece by those paying the closest attention. It may not get the widespread attention that Pixies' Doolittle does, but the love it gets might even run a little deeper, both from its creator and his biggest fans. It's meaningful enough that Black and the original band that created it have just embarked on an anniversary tour during which they'll play the whole record, and it's being re-released on gold vinyl, a gold record that should have been. You can find dates online, they'll be hitting major US cities throughout January, ending in New York February 1 before heading to Paris and London. As a high school student, Paul Banks came to the Pixies via a love of Nirvana, and eventually found his way to Teenager of the Year, an album that—as you'll hear in this conversation—was massively important to him. Banks would of course go on to form the band Interpol, for which he has been the singer and guitarist since 1997. Their latest is 2022's The Other Side of Make-Believe, but Interpol has also been revisiting a beloved album recently, touring on the anniversary of their classic second record, Antics. These two have a great chat about Teenager of the Year here, plus they talk about Black's kids and their musical ambitions, lyric writing in general, and the time Black was asked to audition for the part of a serial killer in a David Fincher movie. They also get into some specifics about Teenager of the Year songs, including a great story about album opener "Whatever Happened to Pong?" Enjoy. Well, sit right down, my wicked son, and let us tell you a story, about the subject of this year's Discord & Rhyme holiday episode: the Pixies! (Or technically, just Pixies.) Hailing from Boston, the alternative rock quartet dealt with mounting intra-band tension with little to nothing to show for it financially, leading bandleader Charles Thompson (alias Black Francis) to break up the band via fax in 1991. But the band's critical stature gradually grew to gigantic proportions in the ‘90s, as their albums influenced bands like Pavement, PJ Harvey, Radiohead, Weezer, and especially Nirvana, who built an entire movement out of the classic Pixies “quiet-loud” formula. When they reunited for a reunion tour in 2004, they found, much to their shock and awe, that their songs had grown into anthems. Their 1989 album Doolittle is arguably the peak of their original run, featuring songs that could plausibly fill an arena without sacrificing their scrappy indie energy, so join Rich, John, and Dan as they sail away on a (festive) wave of mutilation.Cohosts: Rich Bunnell, John McFerrin, Dan WatkinsComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/153-pixies-doolittle-1989Discord & Rhyme's merch store: http://tee.pub/lic/discordpodSupport the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpodMalört: The Redemption of a Revered and Reviled Spirit by Josh Noel: https://www.joshnoel.net/malort-book
John is joined by Pixies, Charles Thompson (aka Black Francis), and producer Tom Dalgety, to talk about how they wrote, recorded and produced the band's latest album ‘The Night The Zombies Came'. The Pixies are an American alternative rock band widely acclaimed as one of the pioneers of the late 1980s rock movement. Their first three albums - Surfer Rosa (1988), Dolittle (1989) and Bossanova (1990) - defined an era as well as earning the band much critical success. The Pixies have influenced numerous prominent artists including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, The Strokes and Weezer. Since re-forming in 2004, they have maintained a steady creative output, working closely with producer Tom Dalgety. Catching up at Strongroom Studios, Charles and Tom share stories from their album writing process, including the last minute track that Tom snuck onto the record, the inspiration that came from trips around the English countryside, and the creative results of Charles's temper tantrums (which included his songwriting notebook ending up on the studio roof!). Tracks discussed: The Vegas Suite, I Hear You Mary, Jane (The Night the Zombies Came) TAPE IT Thanks to our friends at Tape It for supporting the podcast. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the latest episode of Columbia House Party, hosts Jake Goldsbie and Blake Murphy dive into an album that is inextricable from every episode that's come before or will come after, the 1989 classic Doolittle from Pixies. It's just Pixies, by the way. The impact Pixies had on all of alt-rock, pop-punk, and the subgenres between is well established but becomes obvious through a deep re-examining of their most prominent work. This week we have Program Director from FM90 Amy Hart, and we dig into the 90s hit album ‘The Last Splash' from The Breeders. We talk about the conception, of the band itself with The Pixies. The tumultuous relationship between Kim Deal and Pixies front-man Black Francis. The one of a kind twin vocals harmonies brought to rock music by sisters Kim and Kelly Deal and, the drug addiction that unfolded the band at its seams. We jump right into the deep-in, feet first!
The Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in 1986, in Boston, Massachusetts. Until 2013, the band consisted of Black Francis (vocals, rhythm guitar, songwriter), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass, vocals) and David Lovering (drums). They disbanded acrimoniously in 1993 but reunited in 2004. After Deal left in 2013, the Pixies hired Kim Shattuck as a touring bassist; she was replaced that year by Paz Lenchantin, who became a permanent member in 2016. The Pixies are associated with the 1990s alternative rock boom, and draws on elements including punk rock and surf rock. Their music is known for dynamic 'loud-quiet-loud' shifts and song structures. Francis is the Pixies' primary songwriter; his often surreal lyrics cover offbeat subjects such as extraterrestrials, incest, and biblical violence. The band achieved modest popularity in the US but was more successful in Europe. Their jarring pop sound influenced acts such as Nirvana, Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer. In this episode a playlist of songs created by the Pixies and published in a popular music streaming platform (that shall remain unnamed) between December 2017 and July 2019. Lineup: Blue Öyster Cult, Fleetwood Mac, The Doors, Black Sabbath, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dick Dale, Jimi Hendrix, T. Rex, Teenage Fanclub, ACDC, Baxter Dury, The Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Sugar, The Cure, Eels, The Clash, The Psychedelic Furs, Alabama Shakes, Andrew Norman, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Gil Rose, Ty Segall, Surf Friends, David Bowie, Mose Allison, Throwing Muses, Hüsker Dü, Peter, Paul and Mary, Thelonious Monk, Explosions In The Sky, The Beatles, Buzzcocks, The Fall, Weezer, Moondog, Suicide, Nico

@dsanddurga is a New York-based indie house that began in 2007, their immersive fragrances incorporating inspirations from music, nature, myth, culture and travel. Founded by the married partnership of David Seth Molton (who was a musician before becoming a self-trained perfumer) and Kavi Ahuja (who was an architect), both @fragrantmaven and @outspokenbeautynicola have long loved wearing their fragrances, and we're delighted to have both David and Kavi on the show this week! In this wide-ranging and revealing interview, David and Kavi talk us through how they began (making scented potions from a Victorian manual) their diverse inspirations, David self-training as a perfumer and Kavi's design skills, through to opening the flagship store and their fragrant plans for the future…PS: Extraordinary stories about meeting @brianeno and Black Francis from @pixiesofficial (who wears - and loves - the fragrance inspired by him)!Burning Barbershop Cowboy GrassDebaserRadio BombayI Don't Know What El CosmicoBistro WatersLeatherizeChanel Les Exclusifs

Pixies' "Vamos" (1988).
Pixies, Black Francis, and the dirty beard.
Shortly after Doolittle, bassist Kim Deal needed an outlet to channel her creative energies in ways she wasn't able to under Black Francis' firm grip on the Pixies' songwriting process. So she formed a supergroup called The Breeders, teamed up with producer Steve Albini, and cranked out their debut record Pod in just 10 days. The result is an unapologetically straight-forward indie rock album that feels like an urgent expression of raw emotion and energy from a pent-up songwriter who had a hell of a lot to say. Join us as we chat about The Breeders album that came out before "Cannonball" made them a household name among rock fans.TracklistHellboundCannonballDoeIrisOpenedLime HouseThis show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network.

Piggy-backing off our Talking Heads and Sonic Youth episodes, we explore another trailblazer of the alt-rock post-punk variety. When Pixies released Doolittle in 1989, they carried a confidence into the studio that was missing from their first record. With melodic, simple song structures and Black Francis' sporadic, neurotic outbursts sprinkled throughout the record, they created a new dynamic known as "loud-quiet-loud" that helped paved the way for grunge, and countless other indie alt rock bands that followed in their footsteps.Tracklist Pixies - Debaser Pixies - I Bleed Pixies - No 13 Baby Pixies - There Goes My Gun Pixies - Gouge Away This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network. This year, the original members of the Breeders—indie-rock royalty—are back together, twenty-five years after “Last Splash,” an album that fans regard as a classic. Kim Deal, Kelly Deal, Josephine Wiggs, and Jim MacPherson joined David Remnick in the studio to play songs off their new record, “All Nerve.” They also talk about the toll of drugs and alcohol, about playing together after decades, and about the persistence of sexism in rock. Kim Deal once said that “misogyny is the backbone of the music industry,” and she remains bitter about how badly female musicians are treated—even by their friends. She recalls a remark that Charles Thompson, who led the Pixies under the name Black Francis, once made about her. “I'm paraphrasing … he said, ‘Kim, all she would have to do was smile and the crowd would erupt in cheers.' Of course that's going to bother me.” For Deal, this comment minimized her work as a musician: “I'm sweating, I'm almost going to pass out with the heat, I just threw up a little bit in my mouth, the misogynist tour driver did not get sanitary napkins so I'm probably bleeding a little down my leg right then. I'm doing downstrokes, really fast, exhausting music … at the same time I have to find the pitch of the song because I'm singing a melodic harmony on top of everything … All that is happening, [but] all I did was just sit there and smile, and the crowd was clapping because I smiled?” The Breeders performed “Off You” live at WNYC Studios.
