In the episode, "On the Polycrisis with Mark McCormack: Psychiatric Coercion, Hegel, A.I. and Saving Humanity (S5, E13),"  Mark begins with sharing his intimate experience with psychiatry and its oppressive structure. A peaceful protestor of 20 years, while on a hunger strike protesting the polycrisis, Mark describes how the institution overtook his life through forced hospitalization and a list of human rights violations. He speaks of his pressing class action lawsuit, which holds accountable the mental health care system in Canada with potential to go global.Mark also reveals his passion behind the German philosopher, G.W.F Hegel, whose work may pave the way to creatively and strategically confront  head on the polycrisis, which includes climate change, artificial intelligence, and Crispr technology, among others. With the coming AI age and possible reality collapse in our future, Mark addresses the oncoming mental health crisis or possible mass psychosis that may emerge. He believes incorporating Hegel's philosophy into A.I. research on alignment issues, may help create a benevolent AGI, which can reach the only outcome with which humans can co-exist. Hegel arrived just before modern psychiatry took a more reductionist road, and returning to his holistic and spiritual philosophy may hold the answer for our future. Mark believes in this path so whole heartedly, that he has called out for experts in their fields to unite and claim as a team the upcoming 6 Nobel prizes to legitimize the seriousness of the situation we are currently facing today existentially.Bio:Mark McCormack is a philosophy enthusiast at the University Of Alberta. He is passionate about social justice and led a group named Make Poverty History for many years. His studies have ranged across all religions and systems including the German philosopher G.W.F Hegel. After a few thousand hours studying the Science Of Logic, Mark believes there is a way to create a peaceful revolution and New World Spirit for society which would require transformation of the mental healthcare system. Having gone on a hungerstrike as part of a union initiative of Uber drivers, Mark discovered deep fissures in the system which allowed his human rights to be violated in several ways. His goal now is to make this peaceful revolution a reality to address the escalating mental health crisis arising from reality collapse as the polycrisis continues.#polycrisis #artificialintelligence #realitycollapse #mentalhealth #mentalillness #Hegelianswhowanttochangetheworld #livingphilosophy #NobelsurprizeReferences:Nobel Surprize (10 hour No Cree Council)https://youtu.be/cKEtPIryrNYFollow Mark at:Facebook: www.facebook.com/peacefulrevolution23LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mmccormack23/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@spiritpeacefulrevolution3523Please visit my website at: http://www.notascrazyasyouthink.com/Don't forget to subscribe to the Not As Crazy As You Think YouTube channel @SicilianoJenConnect:Instagram: @ jengaita LinkedIn: @ jensicilianoTwitter: @ jsiciliano

In the early 1980s, the University of Alberta funded a series of experimental literary radio programs, which were broadcast across the province on the CKUA community radio network. At the time, CKUA station had just been resurrected through a deal with ACCESS and was eager for educational programming. Enter host and producer Jars Balan – then a masters student in the English department with limited radio experience. For five years, Balan produced three radio series, Voiceprint, Celebrations, and Paper Tygers, which explored the intersection of language, literature, and culture, and he interviewed some of the biggest names in the Canadian literary scene, including Margaret Atwood, Maria Campbell, Robert Kroetsch, Robertson Davies, and many others. This episode is framed as a “celebration” of those heady days of college radio in the early 80s. In it, clips from Jars's radio programs, recovered from the University of Alberta Archives, supplement interviews with Balan and audio engineer Terri Wynnyk. Special tribute will be given to the recently departed Western Canadian poets Doug Barbour and Phyllis Webb through the inclusion of their in-studio performances recorded for Balan's own Celebrations series. By looking back on the pioneering days of campus radio, this episode sheds light on the current moment in scholarly podcasting and how the genre is being resurrected and reimagined by a new generation of “academics on air.”Special thanks to Arianne Smith-Piquette from CKUA and Marissa Fraser from UAlberta's Archives and Special Collections, and to SpokenWeb Alberta researcher Zachary Morrison, who worked behind the scenes on this episode.SpokenWeb is a monthly podcast produced by the SpokenWeb team as part of distributing the audio collected from (and created using) Canadian Literary archival recordings found at universities across Canada. A new study out of the University of Alberta highlights the need for greater support for athletes who become pregnant. One of the participants of this study, 2-time Olympian Hilary Stellingwerff, knows this first-hand. She was instrumental in creating policy change at Athletics Canada after she lost her sport funding following the birth of her first child. Now retired from elite running, Hilary coaches at the University of Victoria and continues to advocate for greater pregnancy and parental support for athletes. In this episode we speak with Hilary, as well as the two authors of this study, Dr. Margie Davenport and Dr. Tara-Leigh McHugh.Study link: "Pushing for change: a qualitative study of the experiences of elite athletes during pregnancy"Learn more about The Shakeout Podcast and Canadian Running Magazine on our website https://runningmagazine.ca/category/shakeout-podcast/Follow The Shakeout Podcast on Twitter https://twitter.com/ShakeoutPodcastInstagram https://www.instagram.com/shakeoutpodcast/ andFacebook https://www.facebook.com/theshakeoutpodcast/Subscribe to our weekly show on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-shakeout-podcast/id1224828899243

Morning y'all! This episode was recorded about 2-3 weeks ago and it was one of those episodes I just could not wait to put out and I'm so glad the wait is finally over! Jenn Meyer is yet another close friend from my days at Lister, we played a lot of dodgeball, drank a lot of dukes beers together and I always admired her outlook, perspectives and especially her humour. So it was such a fun time to reconnect, tell some old stories and catch up on all that I have missed of her journey that has brought her back to the UofA to pursue a nursing degree after all that we went through in our battles against the very same university all those years ago! We speak a lot about those times and what it taught us. It is interesting to look back with years of life experience on exactly what took place, where we could take personal accountability and where we still feel the university owes some apologies (a really funny story there for next time Jen comes on as well!) We also cover the gambit of current events and do our best to solve all the world's problems! I'm really proud of this conversation and hope you all enjoy it as well! If you do please pass this onto a friend, follow Jen and the vondubcast on social media and check out some of our other episodes!

O baby this episode is going to stir some shit! Just how we like it! Today's guest is Sam Wright, he was the president of the Lister Hall students association in the 2013-2014 school year. This was a pivotal year in the associations history as the university decided they would do anything within their power to snuff it out of existence.  This culminated in court battles, late night planning meetings, closed door conferences and more stress and heartache than any team of 18-20 year olds should ever have to endure on top of a full time academic workload. I had forgotten so many pieces of the story and it was a wonderful time to have Sam come lay it all out for us exactly as we remember it. Obviously we are going to be a little bit bias but the hope is that someone from that time would want to come on and give the university's side of the events as they saw them, and I truly  hope that it happens. This episode will open your eyes to a lot of behind the scenes motivations that drive the world of postsecondary education and hopefully allow future young minds to go into it armed with more information than they would have otherwise! I know you will love this episode so please pass it on to anyone you know who went to the UofA and especially Lister hall! Thanks bb's

Today's guest's I happened to stumble upon on linkedin as there was an article about 2 masters of geology students at the UofA who were gathering signatures on an open letter to the Canadian Prime Minister and as I looked further into the content of  that letter it felt like it came straight from myself!  What they are asking is for a middle ground to be struck between environmental protection and the energy industry as well as a call for nuanced discussion and education in place of the polarization and demonization we see so commonly.   We discuss this letter at length including new industry-led technologies being developed to help lessen environmental impact, ways to fight back against ignorant polarization as well as how we see the industry moving forward.  I believe the mindset and ideas put forth in this podcast  as well as in their letter reflects a large uncatered to part of the  Canadian population that both cares deeply for the environment while also being incredibly proud of Canadian energy and how it is developed.  If any of this rings true with you, please visit and read their letter and consider signing at www.studentsforcanada.ca  under projects and student letter to Prime Minister Trudeau.  If you enjoy this podcast  please, tell a friend, check out some more and follow the instagram and twitter pages for The VonDubCast!
