In this edition of The Way Out I'm delighted to bring you a tremendous interview I had with mindset and nutrition coach, fellow podcaster, and person in long term recovery Glenn Dougherty. Glenn shares his journey to and through recovery to this point in super refreshing, positive often entertaining and always inspirational fashion and I do believe you all will be nodding along and indeed laughing along as you at once relate with Glenn's story as well as find the humor in it in only the way we who are in Recovery truly can. The inspirational nature of Glenn's story is due in large part to how he evolved through his health and wellness in conjunction with his therapeutic and sobriety journey, all in the context of resurrecting the most important intimate relationship in his life, with his now wife that he's now married not once but twice, a wife that he now does a podcast with that's aptly named About this Life, all of which is about to unfold before your very ears so listen up. I was excited to talk with Harvin. We both play at The Oaks and when I first joined there I kept hearing things about what a great player he is and as you will hear, what a nice and thoughtful person he is. We discuss his early years in junior golf and his time playing on the Penn State team. We then talk about his time away from golf and what it was like to pick up a club again. We talked about some of his wins in NH and success he has had at the US Mid-Am. I loved hearing how Harvin approaches the mental part of the game and the lessons we can take from that to our lives away from golf. We also spend some time talking about why The Oaks is one of the best tests of golf in New Hampshire. Thanks for listening and sharing the podcast with your friends. In this rendition of The Way Out I'm overjoyed to bring you my interview with person in long term recovery and life coach Hayley Scherders. Hayley shares her journey to and through recovery to this point with us with remarkable authenticity and in extremely relatable fashion, and all along the way she sprinkles practical recovery and spiritual wisdom that we can all apply to our own recovery. One of the most enlightening of which is the wonderfully powerful idea and concept of having 5 seconds of courage in order to ignite a seismic and positive shift in our lives, such as choosing to begin our journey of recovery, or starting therapy, or giving up a counterproductive thought and/or behavior pattern, or as Hayley so eloquently stated and herself experienced, deciding to turn our past into lessons instead of life sentences. Indeed, the smallest of beginnings can mushroom into meaningful, positive and sustained change, such as reading some quit-lit, going to a recovery meeting, or listening to a powerful recovery story like the one that's about to unfold before your very ears, so listen up. It is becoming increasingly clear that the climate crisis is having a major impact on migration flows, with millions forced to move from their homes as a result of a disaster, or because they have been affected by slower-moving environmental changes that leave their homes uninhabitable, such as desertification or sea-level rises. On today's show, Conor Lennon speaks to Felipe González Morales, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, on the need for consistent policies to address the impact of the climate emergency on migration.Do you have suggestions, comments or story ideas for The Lid Is On? In this edition of The Way Out I'm overjoyed to bring you my interview with person in long term recovery and founder of the creative coaching agency Liberty Empowerment and the new community Speak Toast, Keelin Conant. In accordance with the Truth in Podcasting Act of 2023, which I 100% just made up and is absolutely not a real thing, this is the last of a handful of interviews I inadvertently recorded with my super sub-par webcam microphone, so a big thank you to all ya'll Way Out faithful for bearing with the less than stellar audio from yours truly. Despite my audio adversity, the spiritual and recovery truth that emerges as Keelin shares her journey to and through recovery is truly extraordinary. Without question one of the key truths embodied in Keelin's story amounts to a profound and fundamental question we all must address or answer in one way or another in our Recovery Journeys: what are we willing to give up to become the person we feel called to be? This question goes back to the Hero's Journey we've often referenced on this podcast, which is the journey we all embark upon when we enter recovery. We reckon with our limitations, which for us is largely our addictions and counter productive thought and behavior patterns and we embark on a journey which principally consists of becoming increasingly willing to systematically shed our addictions and counterproductive thought and behavior patterns in order to become increasingly closer to the people we ultimately feel called to be. To the extent that we're able to do that, is the extent we can increasingly live in the sunlight and embody the love and connectedness that creates a meaningful and enduring Recovery. Regardless of the pathway we take, whether that be 12-Step Recovery, SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery, Faith based Recovery, a combination of these or an all together different path the truths embodied in the conversation that's about to unfold before your very ears are truly universal. The word conversation is an adjective which frankly fundamentally fails to accurately describe what transpired between Keelin and I, it was in fact a spiritually liberating exchange of the highest order so do make sure you listen up. This week I speak with Leann Faint who coming from a broken family herself, inherently understands the struggles of the students she works with. Called to teaching, Leann began her career as an English teacher in a mainstream high school in a low socioeconomic area in Australia. While raising her three children, she moved into Special Education, a field Leann quickly became passionate about. This led to Leann studying her Masters in Special Education and then gaining her role of Head of Special Education. This role prepared her for working with complex youth, families, and outside agencies. In early 2018 Leann felt led to apply for a position at Carinity Education Southside after 20 years in the public sector. For the past five years, she has strongly felt both the burden and the privilege of being the caretaker of the extraordinary young women who are students at Southside. During this time, Leann has completed further study in Trauma Aware Education at the post-graduate level. This is one of the stories I love to share! As we look at her childhood, we are able to see God's plans to use every experience, both good and bad, to pour into others who are hurting. Leann's own healing journey now guides the healing path of young girls in their struggles. In this rendition of The Way Out I am absolutely ecstatic to bring you what turned out to be a marvelous interview with Joi Andreoli, Author of the new book The Recovery Cycle: A Practical Guide to Loving Your Sober Life. Joi is also a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Transactional Analysis Practitioner, Certified WANT® Communication Educator, and person in long term recovery. Many of us who have spent any time in and around recovery may have been introduced to the concept of the addiction cycle, of which there are a number of variations. For our purposes, the addiction cycle has four distinct phases starting with preoccupation and anticipation which then leads to addiction related rituals like the search for and preparation of the substance which then leads to intoxication or binging followed by the last phase which is withdrawal and negative effects like shame, guilt and remorse. Much of what we're actively doing in Recovery is a process of replacing our addictions and counterproductive thought and behavior patterns with positive and healthy behaviors that over time begin to change the way we think, feel, react, and respond to the daily events and situations we encounter in our lives. Nature abhors a vacuum so just trying really hard not to do any particular thought and behavior pattern or addiction through sheer willpower without replacing the void with positive actions and practices is nothing short of unsustainable for most of us. Willpower is finite, but engaging in what Joi refers to as contrary action allows us to refocus and to realign our energies and efforts and as you've heard more than a time or two on this podcast, we can act our way into right living instead of trying to think our way into right acting. As we learn in the interview that is about to unfold before your very ears, Joi asserts that recovery too has a cycle which is the mirror opposite in the positive of the cycle of addiction so listen up.
