Mount Auburn is the first American cemetery that purposely combined commemoration with elements of experimental gardening, picturesque landscape design, and access to nature, starting a trend across the nation in the mid-19th century that led to the creation of the first public parks in this country. This week I speak with Sherrie Pilkington who enters into various aspects of life as a daughter of the One True God. She dearly loves her 2 grown sons and 2 daughters-in-love but it's her 6 grandchildren that keep her young at heart and the sound of joy in her laugh. Known for pondering the hard things in life through the lens of God's heart, she shares her revelations through her podcast, Finding God in Our Pain. Sherrie and her guests do not shy away from the hard questions about the reality of pain and suffering and the good God we profess. After unexpectedly losing her husband in early 2018, whom she had been with for a little over 33 years, she now knows that God speaks beautiful things in the dark. Through her website (alifeofthrive.com) and her podcast she wants to let people know that they're never alone in their pain because God enters into the darkest of valleys and will gently shepherd each one through. This is the second part of a two-part episode - the first part is here, episode 54, from March 31.We will start at FC St. Pauli, now in the German Bundesliga, at the club's museum which has very active researchers, and we'll end at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich and the bigger question of what right remembering looks like in professional soccer - and what it can look like. We will take that journey with no less than 3 guests: Celina Albertz, a researcher and also in the curating team of the FC St. Pauli Museum; Sönke Goldbeck, Board chair and director of the museum, and Felipe Tobar, Assistant Professor in the Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management Department at Clemson Universit in South Carolina and founder of the Football Studies youtube channel. He is also the mastermind of a new documentary on public memory and football, which we will also talk about.Part 1 is mostly concernedwith the research on the famous St. Pauli matchday song "Das Herz von St. Pauli" ("The Heart of St. Pauli"), and the discussion started by Celina's research into the composer, lyricist and performer of that song. Part 2 funnels out from there to larger questions of soccer, research and remembering, and features Felipe more heavily. If you want to know more about FC St. Pauli and what makes the club special, especially to this podcast, listen in to episode 26, from 2023, when I talked with two social workers that are employed by the club. Felipe Tobar has also been here before, he has talked about his work and research in episode 31, last february.HELPFUL LINKS FOR THIS EPISODE:Das Herz von St. Pauli sung in the Millerntor Stadium (YouTube video)Deutsche Welle report on the song and its roots, with Celina's researchFC St. Pauli MuseumFelipe Tobar's documentary, "The Match That not Every Club Wants to Play" (YouTube, Football Studies channel)NEW: send me a text message! This episode features Will McLaughlin. Will is a great golfer and a great story teller - I had a lot of fun talking with him. We cover his early years in golf and he shares a great story about shooting the course record at Concord Country Club two years ago. He also shares some great stories about playing with Xander Schauffele at the US Amateur. I really enjoyed hearing Will's perspective on golf and his approach to the mental side of the game - something I think a lot of golfers can benefit from. Mark and Matt are joined by special guest EJ to discuss "Moonlight" the 2016 American coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Barry Jenkins, based on Tarell Alvin McCraney's unpublished semi-autobiographical play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue.A timeless story of human connection and self-discovery, Moonlight chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami. If you are in England on the nice Spring weekend of March 22nd, I hope you didn't book the trip to see a Premier League game. Because there are none. It's a dreaded national team break again. But on the other hand, that weekend may also be one of the best to soak in English football culture, because it's the Annual “Non-League Day," an annual, grassroots-led spotlight on non-professional football in England, a chance for those clubs to "promote the importance of affordable volunteer-led community football," for fans who don't follow the big clubs across the country to show support for their local amateur side - and a chance for the educated soccer fan to look into the bottom of the English league pyramid, and find there is a lot of vibrancy, passion and sacrifices there. Today, in preparation, we are highlighting that day and the work and volunteers surrounding it, with James Doe, who founded the Non League Day in 2010 as a kind of social media experiment, and has overseen its growth to something that is now supported by the Premier League and Football League clubs, MPs, celebrities, media organisations, charities and most importantly the non-league clubs themselvesHELPFUL LINKS FOR THIS EPISODE:Non-League Day websiteNLD on X and InstagramThe English Football League System explained on WikipediaNEW: send me a text message! In this concluding episode of the series focusing on artists and climate change, I'm reflecting on the emotional impact of dedicating multiple episodes to the pressing issue of climate change. Initially optimistic about the potential of governmental agendas to address environmental issues, I'm feeling disheartenment, to say the least, due to political challenges that threaten environmental protection efforts. However, I found renewed hope through community engagement and the creativity of young filmmakers at a film screening event I co-hosted.Key Highlights:· My Personal Journey: I share my shift towards a more eco-conscious mindset after focusing on climate-themed episodes.· Political Disappointment: My optimism about Biden's climate agenda is challenged by political setbacks, including threats to the EPA and public land protections.· Community and Art as Hope: I highlight a film screening event I co-hosted with filmmaker Kristin Tièche, featuring local films on environmental topics. Note: This is an unusual episode, in reaction to the events unfolding Thursday and Friday, with little time to edit or the usual setup. All sounds fine and is audible, but not as nice as usual. My apologies!Back last Summer, many Premier League clubs announced they would change, or do away with, "concession tickets" for seniors and youth, as well as a price hike on season tickets. Resistance formed at many clubs, but at West Ham, it seemed particularly organized, creative and social media savvy. In August, I talked with Alex, a chief initiator of the #SaveOurConcessions campaign online and on matchdays, home and away, as well as with Andy Payne of Hammers United and now the club's fan advisory board about their strategy to fight back. I predicted a "Fall storm." In recent weeks, not only did Liverpool announce a price freeze, West Ham restored all concessions and also froze season tickets. Seemingly out of nowhere, right before a home game. To Andy and Alex of course, the change is the result of months of hard work. This is a look behind the curtain at how a Premier League club makes bad business decisions, how fans mobilize, and how pragmatism and solidarity, creativity and activism make a difference for local fans even in the most glitzy league in the world.Unfortunately, the counter-example of today's fan activism omnibus episode comes from Chicago, where the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women's Soccer League changed their name to "Stars" without any organized protests by an otherwise fairly organized fanscene. One lone voice from Chicago was willing to speak on the record about why that might be. There is a lot to say about Argentina and football that we are not saying today. There is a lot about Argentina and football that we are saying today. We're even saying things about saying things about football in Argentina: Christopher Hylland joins me, an English author and educator with a Latin American past and a Norwegian present. His football-centric travel report Tears at La Bombonera is out since 2021, and he has just published a second one, a unique journey to the land where linguistics and football meet. The book is called Dame Bola: A Journey Through the Language of Argentinian Football. First, however, we discuss what is going on in Argentinian politics and football today, under the presidency of Javier Milei who is fulfilling his campaign promises to put a libertarian chainsaw to the Argentinian state and economy. Part of the flurry of reforms was a presidential decree to allow privatization in Argentinian football and turn clubs into limited liability companies, open to investors. This could be a historic change to what a sports, or soccer, club IS in Argentina. (There are some parallels to when Raphael Molter was here and we talked about 50+1 in Germany, and you know from other episodes as well that I really care about the role clubs can play in the community. Clubs, not companies.)HELPFUL LINKS FOR THIS EPISODE:Christopher Hylland on Milei's push to privatize (Substack, Free)Christopher Hylland on Instagram and BlueskyDame Bola websiteDame Bola reviewed on Cultured FootballNEW: send me a text message! The EU, Europe's great post-war peace project, can feel beleaguered today. Global and continental uncertainties collide, and things are complicated in Brussels, Belgium, the heart of the European Union. Two clubs from that capital survived in the Europa League, though none bear Brussels' city name: RSC Anderlecht, with the beautiful color of purple, and Royal Union St Gilloise, a recent regular guest in European club competitions. And in a multinational, multilingual European Union, in Brussels, Belgium, a multilingual, multiethnic country (French, Dutch and German are Belgium's official languages), it's Royal Union that fittingly has a multinational, multilinguistic fanclub. Its beginnings lie in a group of EU employees from other countries who met on the standing terraces of the Stade Joseph Marien, St. Gilles' legendary homeground. Joining me today are Ana, from Portugal, who works for the European Commission, one of the Branches of the European Union, and Seppe, from Belgium, who "works a normal job”. They are members of the above mentioned multinational, multilingual fanclub - "beunion" is its name. This is a conversation about the rise back to the top of one of Belgium's oldest and most unique clubs, about the state of the Union that is Union St Gilloise, but also the European Union, and the continent, these days. This week I'm speaking with Laurie Meek Watkins who has always referred to herself as a “Cracked Pot”. She's the Type A Lady behind the blog type a checklist. Laurie dedicates her imperfect self to helping you know a great big God who overcomes an imperfect world. (2 Corin. 4:7-9). In 2020, Laurie shifted from being “cracked” to “shattered” as her husband and companion of 40 years walked away from their marriage. For the next two years, Laurie experienced the ongoing trauma and chaos of trying to pull her marriage back together...until Godly counsel told her it was time to let go. (Matt 18:15-17) Then… Hurricane Ian took her home. God was teaching deep lessons in letting go of loss. Laurie's goal is to walk this new journey with dignity and glorify God along the way. She searches to find purpose in her pain and to share hope with others. (Romans 8:28). You've heard it said, “ There's Good News...and then there's Bad News.” (John 16:33). Laurie will share the Bad News, the Good News...and THEN...the GLORIOUS News: God restores shattered things. (Isaiah 61:2-4) “I am making everything new!” (Rev. 21:5) Laurie's message for you: “Precious one. Please remember you are loved with an everlasting love. Jesus wants you to fall fully and completely into His arms. Jesus has already won your battle for you. He calls you to come to Him and REST. Let go. REST. This road may be hard - But you are never alone when you give everything to your Savior. Ask for forgiveness. Let go of control. YOU are Loved. YOU have a purpose. This week, I speak with Anthony Hyslop, who was born in St. Clair, Michigan in 1986, moved to northern Idaho at the age of 7 with his family, was homeschooled, took his GED, and went into concrete flatwork, working for his father, and he has been doing that for the past 19 years. During that time he married his first love, Elizabeth in 2007. They have had 7 children, Clarence, Daphne, Dakota, Kirsten, Titus, Judah, and Caleb, the latter now living with the Lord. They have 15 chickens and a black cat named Rocky. Anthony loves Jesus, occasionally hunting, looking for antlers, snorkeling, going to the lake with the kids, going to the movies with his wife, and creating new stories and writing poetry from time to time. He believes all good things come from the Lord and be a good steward of what is given to you. You can check out some of his work and poetry on Facebook: Stories by Anthony Hyslop (@ahstories). Norway is regularly listed among the "happiest countries in the world." It is one of the wealthiest too, and its not a country with revolutionary fervor. It's not France. It's not even Germany. Yet the Video Assistant Referee, known widely as VAR, has raised Norwegians' hackles. Organized fans have mobilized enough, and in enough forms, that the country's two professional leagues recently cast a majority vote to scrap VAR - a testimony not only to true concern about the impact of VAR on games, a concern that I share, but also to the significant improvement in the quantity and quality of Norwegian soccer fanculture. It has made considerable strides in the land of skiing and handball over the last 10, 15 years. Why, and what to look for, in Norway's stadiums?I talked to Matt Guerney from England and Anker from Norway, who run the biggest Englishspeaking social media channel on Norwegian football to find out more - about the conflict around the VAR; but also more broadly: what cities and local cultures does the 1st league include, what derbies are there and why, the rise of organized Ultra groups in the last 10,15 years. This week, I speak with Stacey Gottens, who was born in Australia to show business parents; Stacey performed on screen and on stage before becoming a schoolteacher, children's author, and globetrotter. Now based in the UK as a Creative Consultant focusing on editing and design, Stacey enjoys collaborating with authors worldwide to create life-affirming and inclusive content. Committed to excellence with the belief that small changes are significant, Stacey goes the extra mile to transform projects into success stories. We look at her childhood up to the present to find the beautiful thread of Jesus in her life.
