Full write up https://kyla.substack.com This is Part 1 of a Two Part food and commodity inflation series. I wanted to intro Scoot as a solution, and will follow up with a broader macro piece on Friday! Check out Scoot here: https://www.scootscience.com Disclaimer: This is a sponsored post with Scoot Science. As I've outlined in many of my pieces, we cannot have green energy policy without green energy investment - but I've never provided or discussed solutions beyond that. Scoot Science is building a tool called SeaVest that allows investors to understand the investability of salmon sites, incorporating sustainability and investment impact in order to benefit society (and the environment!). This piece will discuss the history of investing, with a focus on climate-related projects, and then discuss the importance of ocean investment and understanding ocean risk to grow the blue economy. There will be a focus on salmon farms, through both the lens of economic and ecosystem benefits, and how we truly can embrace the concept of ESG. 00:00 - Intro 00:40 - History 03:13 - Investing in Oceans 05:33 - The Farms 07:09 - Investment Opportunities 11:13 - Improved Environmental Impact 14:18 - Final Thoughts Blog: https://kyla.substack.com Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kylascanlon/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@kylascan? In his Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean, Jonathan White considers the theories that tides are the result of not only cosmic but of microcosmic forces: “Everything is in flux, he says. “Tides are reactions of the sea to the position of the moon and the sun. Tides are also waves that are formed from the vibration of the cosmos. Everything in the universe has a natural tendency to vibrate: flowers, wind, steel, planets, mountains, the inside of an ear." Now by the middle of Deep Summer, those vibrations create an advancing tide of chicory, Queen Anne's lace, great mullein, milkweed, pokeweed, black-eyed Susans, butterfly weed, tall nettle, blue vervain, horseweed, teasel, velvetleaf, wingstem, small-flowered agrimony, bull thistle, tick trefoil and burdock. So all of this tide of vibrations is happening while I sit on the back porch on this day in July, and it seems I am simply watching a day in July. Except for the quivering leaves on the maple trees, and the birds flying back
Jonathan White discusses his book, Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean. After nearly losing his 65’ wooden schooner in a large Alaskan tide, writer, sailor, and surfer Jonathan White vowed to understand the tide. He knew the moon had something to do with it, but what exactly? He read a book, then two. Ten years later, he had read three hundred books and criss-crossed the seven seas to see the largest, fastest, scariest, and most amazing tides in the world. With photographs, stories, and short readings, Jonathan takes his audiences on an enthralling journey into the surprising and poetic workings of the tide. Jonathan White is an accomplished writer, conservationist, sailor, and educator. His first book, Talking on the Water: Conversations about Nature and Creativity, features interviews with Gretel Ehrlich, David Brower, Ursula K. Le Guin, Gary Snyder, Peter Matthiessen, and others. His writing has appeared in the Christian Science Monitor, The Sun, Sierra, the Whole Earth Review, and Fine Homebuilding. Jonathan White holds an MFA in creative nonfiction, and lives with his wife and son on a small island in Washington State.
For this week’s Please Explain, we’ll be talking about the mystery and magic of ocean tides with Jonathan White. He’s a marine conservationist, surfer and author of a new book called, Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean. White explores how tides shape lives and communities, including stories of an Inuit tribe in the Arctic that watches the tides in order to find food, and how a group of French monks live in a monastery surrounded by tidal waters. He also looks at how tides will change with the effects of climate change and how communities are preparing for those changes. Note: Jonathan Capehart guest-hosted this segment of "The Leonard Lopate Show."
Jonathan White recorded this Aquacast at the Aquarium on May 30, 2107. White is a writer, sailor, and marine conservationist.
Writer, sailor, and surfer Jonathan White journeys deep into the world’s oceans in his new book Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean. From investigating the growth of tidal power generation in Chile and Scotland to delving into the threat of rising sea levels in Panama and Venice, join us for this exploration of the current state of our oceans’ infinitely complex and ever-changing ecosystems and the forces that keep our planet’s waters in constant motion.
