Our guest this week is an expert in psychology, persuasive technology, and human behaviour. Nathalie Nahai is also an author, international keynote speaker and artist. Nathalie has thought deeply about the impact of AI on humans and what she has to share with us in this episode is really thought provoking. In this episode we cover what it will mean to be human in the coming years as AI evolves around us. We talk about what happens if businesses just default to using AI to cut costs and roles, and explore how to create AI that has values truly ‘baked in' to support humanity.Nathalie also shares an inspiring call to pursue the answer to perhaps the most important question for today: how do we create businesses that harness technology and support the flourishing of life? And she shares a diverse range of AI resources to listen to or read (see links below). This is Nathalie's second appearance on the show and an obvious choice for us given her global perspectives on humans and their relationship with tech. (It's been six years since we last spoke to her on the podcast after meeting at SXSW in Austin. You can find that episode here.)Nathalie's humane perspective and questions are so important in the world right now. What is a system? This is the type of question which can only be meandered through, which is exactly what Nathalie Nahai and I do on this week's episode. Nathalie is a polymath: musician, artist, psychologist, AI expert and the host of 'In Conversation', her own podcast which she interviewed me on at the beginning of this year. We had a stunning conversation, one which we continue today, discussing relationships, connections, ecosystems, resilience, care and love. This is the perfect conversation to approach the new year with, filled with hope, uncertainty and laughter. This is the fifth year of our traditional Winter Solstice podcast gathering in which Nathalie Nahai of 'In Conversation with Nathalie Nahai, Della Duncan of The Upstream Podcast and I sit around our virtual dark-nights fire to reflect on the podcasting year just gone and explore what has changed for us since the last time we three met in one place. By any measure, this year has been pretty turbulent and our capacity to predict anything at all for 2025 is fairly ragged, but that doesn't stop us from celebrating Della's news, and sharing the ways we find stability and maintain sanity in a world that feels increasingly precarious. Whatever else is happening, friendship is the glue that builds community and all of us - we who make the podcasts and everyone who listens - are building a de facto community of passion and purpose. Nathalie Nahai, behavioural psychologist and author of the book Webs of Influence, explains how colour shapes our decisions and affects our buying behaviour. And what it is about red that makes it the winning colour? In this episode we're talking colour psychology and how you can apply these techniques to your own website and branding. You'll learn about: The colours which imply trust, calmness and wealth Which combinations make us see danger How different generations and cultures respond differently to colour – and how global influences throw all this out of the window And why our brains process a black and white caricature of Celine Dion more quickly than a colour photo. We will also be taking a break in the middle to explore why red is statistically shown to be a colour for winners – great news for Manchester United fans, but not so much for Chelsea… Show notes Visit Nathalie Nahai's website where you can buy her books, listen to her podcast and discover useful resources. This week, as we head down towards what, in the northern hemisphere at least, is the long nights, the dark nights, I wanted to explore our heritage, the way we celebrate the solstice in this land, the land of Britain. I'm aware that quite a lot of you listening are from the southern hemisphere where you're heading up to your long sun and your fires burn differently. I recorded a summer solstice meditation at our long days in June and when we get to the meditation - after the podcast with Della Duncan and Nathalie Nahai, I'll put that up. In the meantime, I hope this conversation with Angharad Wynne helps open doors to reconnection wherever you are in the world. Angharad is a story-teller, a placemaker, a myth-creator holder of tribe and of the land. A native of Wales, she is deeply connected to the land there, and holds retreats and workshops designed to help people connect with the living spirits of the land. In the podcast you're about to hear, she describes her 3 year "Dadeni" training which helps to create the deep tribe-connections, community-connections we speak about in the podcast. If you're interested in this, applications are open until 21st January and the link is in the show notes. I'd also like to remind you that if you have ideas of previous podcast guests - including Angharad, or anyone you've heard over the years - that you'd like us to invite for one of our Sunday evening 'Cutting Edge' events please click the link in the show notes, or go to the podcast section of the website and find the button there and let us know. this is your chance to talk to people, to ask the questions I didn't get around to asking, but you wish I had. And then afterwards, there'll be a chance to connect with other people in breakout rooms, to share your thoughts and ideas and ways of grounding what you've heard in everyday life. So, it's the dark month, the time when we rest, and regather and recoup. The time when we light the fire and invite our tribe to join us. In the spirit of connection, people of the podcast, please welcome, Angharad Wynne, a bard of Wales. Today we are learning from Nathalie Nahai. Nathalie's background in human behaviour, web design and the arts offer a unique vantage point from which to examine the complex challenges we face today. Her best-selling book: Webs Of Influence: The Psychology of Online Persuasion has been adopted as the go-to manual by business leaders and universities alike, and her new book, Business Unusual: Values, Uncertainty and the Psychology of Brand Resilience, has been described as “One of the defining business books of our times”. A behavioural science advisor and host of The Hive Podcast, Nathalie helps clients to ethically apply behavioural science principles to enhance their business. Let's get started... In this conversation with Nathalie, I learned: The problem we are trying to solve is a social and cultural one. Legislate for the impact of the technologies and potential harm. Right livelihood - community, a rhythm, and resting. Having a place or community that makes you a better human. Different conversations in the US and Europe around well-being, with the protestant and productive mindset in the US and the role of pleasure, joy, and pleasure. Still ambitious but different now. Easier and less frightening to wield intellect on stage, than to open up your heart and sing. Started in an art course as a sabbatical in Barcelona, and found a sense of belonging. It is a deeper rooting of what it means to be alive at this moment. MarketingKind is for marketers who want to positively impact the world, and use their skills for a more flourishing future. The root of the word apocalypse is about the ending of something and the beginning of something new. Showing up as best we can, with a loving presence and figuring out what we can offer, and making sure that we have the chance to rest. How can we step into leadership that enables us to connect with a deeper set of values? Salons are hubs for cultural and political change in which people would come together, often run by women. The flourishing future salons will organize conversations through four lenses, technology, nature, society, and the arts. Advancements in technology to date and the pace of change in the future is far beyond the evolutionary speed of human development. We are building smart cities, smart homes, smart offices but now we, the people, need to be smarter in using technology. How tech is built and how we use it as humans has never been more important. In this episode of The Next Five, we look at the relationship between technology and us, how our automated future and the interactions we have with tools, including AI, will shape humanity. Steve Wood, SVP of Product and Platform at Slack, joins us to show how we can empower people with tech. Nathalie Nahai, international speaker and best-selling author, discusses the need to foster better human connections and relationships with others during this fast paced technological future. Gerd Leonhard, futurist, humanist and CEO of the Futures Agency, extols the virtues of machines that remain competent and don't become conscious. As we move from our third to our fourth year, it seemed like a good time to look back on the origins of the whole Accidental Gods project - why and how we started and what our original aims were - and then to look forward to the coming year and what we're focussing on both on the podcast and within the membership. So much has changed even in such a short time. We're all more aware than ever of the tipping points around us, but also more aware of what we can do, of the many, many roles that are here to be filled by people who have time and energy and commitment to give to transforming the future. So this is a paean to possibility and a thank you to all who have been part of the journey this far. As the year stills and tilts afresh, we bring you our annual moment of reflection with two podcast hosts we really admire. There's a meditation at the end, to bring you into your own space of stillness and reflection, but ahead of this, we delve into where we think the global human psyche is at this moment, how we feel when we look upstream, and what we see; and what makes our hearts sing, and what does it prompt us to do: core questions that open up a wealth of ideas, reflections and imaginings of how our world could be as we step forward into 2023, amidst all the tipping points, clear-eyed, strong-hearted and ready to give it all we've got. Nathalie Nahai is an author, keynote speaker and host of The Hive Podcast, a series that enquires into our relationship with one another, with technology and with the living world. A consultant and facilitator to Fortune 500 companies, Nathalie also serves as a behavioural science advisor and helps organisations to ethically apply behavioural science principles to enhance their business. In our modern society, businesses across the globe are taking a stand for ethics and beliefs they believe in, or at least that their customers believe in. Sometimes businesses are built around the idea of an ethical principle, such as the famous outdoor clothing brand Patagonia. Or sometimes a company will make headlines for taking a solid stance on a controversial issue, to demonstrate their support for a certain side, such as Nike. Now more than ever, business and ethics are two subjects that have never been closer. To discuss the modern overlap between the two, we are joined by Nathalie Nahai, the author of Business Unusual and Webs of Influence: The Psychology of Online Persuasion. Nahai shares some basic lessons and ideas that underpin the psychological dynamics behind evolving decision-making processes we go through when making purchases. She also explains how she helps people ethically apply behavioral science principles to enhance their platforms, product design, and customer experience. Additionally, she shares why she created TheValuesMap.com, a website designed to help users identify, develop, and communicate the psychological values their business represents, alongside what it strives to achieve for its employees, customers, and the wider world. And finally, she discusses some of the most exciting stories and guests she has come across while hosting The Hive Podcast and the Tech Weekly podcast for The Guardian.

Many of us are familiar with the phrase, Business as Usual. It's a phrase that has survived many decades, but I am here to announce to you that the era of business as usual is gone, we're now living in the age of Business Unusual. We live in a world of uncertainty, disruption, and black swan events, and so to thrive the people we lead and our demand more than business as usual, they demand that we lead in an unusual way.Today's conversation will open your eyes to the tools that will help you build a resilient business - one that is built on trust, an engaged and fulfilled workforce, and the brand values that can empower you to craft resonant communications and relationships. I am joined by Nathalie Nahai, author of Business Unusual. Nathalie Nahai is host of The Hive podcast, author of two books, international speaker and consultant with businesses big and small. Her clients have included Unilever, Google, Accenture and Harvard Business Review, among many others. Her most recent book, 'Business Unusual: Values, Uncertainty and the Psychology of Brand Resilience', opens up worlds of business where profit is not the only motive, where psychological safety, meaning and solidarity are core business values and businesses are learning to walk their talk. In a world where government is failing so completely to address the many crises of our time, we spent an hour discussing whether business can fill that gap, and if so, how? When it is such a huge part of our lives, when the entire neoliberal model seems to be predicated on a cycle of wage-slavery followed by meaningless consumption, can work bring us back to balance with ourselves, each other and the ecosystems of which we are an integral part? Today I talked to Nathalie Nahai new book Values, Uncertainty and the Psychology of Brand Resilience (Kogan Page, 2022) David Brooks once joked that in the end the “revolution” promised us by the Baby Boomers amounted to nothing much more than the founding of Whole Foods. What will Millennials bring us? Already it seems that the answer is a workforce and consumer-citizens for whom the values they want to live by and be known for on social media will be paramount. Why is that the case? As Nathalie Nahai argues, a primary reason is the looming environmental disaster of global warming. The stakes are high, and the result is that nothing can be taken for granted. With trust being the emotion of business, today's agile, atomized and antagonized workplace wants more justice: for women, for blacks, for everyone who feels like the mantra of “profit with purpose” at least helps to offset, a little, the raging economic inequality of today's economy. From cancel-culture to woke-washing, this is a hugely timely episode. It's our Birthday... and it's the December Solstice, the time of transition and potential transformation . In honour of which, we are crafting a new tradition: a PodBoom shared with Della Duncan of UPSTREAM podcast and Nathalie Nahai of THE HIVE. More at https://accidentalgods.life
Had yet another fascinating conversation about life's most difficult questions with Nathalie Nahai. She was so kind to throw some of these horrible existential questions back to me (shame on her), but that resulted in a fluent and divergent talk. If you want to find out if you are running around life (and the virtual world) like a zombie, or if you are tech companies' b*ch, this one is for you. We also talked about happiness, whatever that is, and little things you can do to condition your mind for the better. Sadly we did not find any conclusive answer about the meaning of life, although I am still satisfied with "42". Nathalie is an expert when it comes to the psychology on the interwebs, and she has written an excellent book about it (which she even gifted to me, how nice). She also is the host of "The Hive Podcast" which investigates our relationship with technology (and has a way better website than mine). On today's episode of The Art of Paid Traffic I’m really excited to welcome "the web psychologist", Nathalie Nahai. Nathalie is the best-selling author of 'Webs of Influence, the Psychology of Online Persuasion', and I invited her on to the podcast to talk about how understanding some simple web psychology can go a long way in improving your online advertising efforts. With a background in psychology, web design and digital strategy, Nathalie coined the term ‘web psychology’ in 2011, defining it as ‘the empirical study of how our online environments influence our attitudes and behaviors’. Don't worry, we talk all about what this means during the episode. Nathalie helps businesses apply scientific rigor to their website design and content marketing, and has worked with Fortune 500 companies, design agencies and SME’s (clients include Google, eBay and Unilever). She also lectures internationally on the subject of web psychology, and writes for Marketing Week and Psychology Today. In Today's Episode You'll Learn What web psychology means and how it can improve your online advertising campaigns. The psychology behind persuasive story-telling and how you can use it for better Facebook advertising results. How to leverage some persuasion principles in your advertising campaigns. THE most important aspect you need to be looking at when you’re creating your ad campaigns and when you’re writing ad copy. What happens to our brains and our psyche when a huge portion of humanity spends their lives persistently jacked in to their computers, their tablets, their smartphones, their screens? We don't really know—in a sense, we're performing one massive uncontrolled experiment on most of the developed world. This week, we've been exploring everything mankind knows about the brain and technology's effect on it. Nathalie Nahai, the "web psychologist," has been doing this for her career. She's researchers how the web changes our expectations, our behavior, our attention spans, and our mood. Later this month, she'll be hosting the "Humanise the Web" conference in London, where she and other experts will be exploring our connection with the internet and how, maybe, we can make it a little more like the real world. William Turvill, News Editor at the Press Gazette, and web psychologist Nathalie Nahai join Paul Blanchard to discuss the latest media headlines. This edition: should the BBC consider selling BBC Three instead of moving it online? Have newspapers turned 'Jihadi John' into a celebrity? And should we be concerned about journalistic standards at MailOnline?
Recently a photograph collection circulated called ‘The Death of Conversation’. It was a series of black and whites taken of unknowing members of the public who, in social situations, had abandoned conversation in favour of looking at their mobile phones. It went viral and ended up featured in TIME magazine and the New York Times. The most fascinating thing about the photographs is that they show an outsiders perspective of a habit that we all participate in. On many an occasion we opt for the spikes of thrill we can find on opening social media notifications, receiving likes or being retweeted. Social media access follows us around now with our mobile phones, but it’s no accident that we experience psychological reward using these apps. Nathalie Nahai is a web psychologist. An expert exploring just how the design of the web manipulates and heightens our sense of reward. Her book, Webs of Influence, explores just how technology is strategically created with us in mind - to make us click. Want to know why you can’t resist clicking on an article or why you need to check on your notifications regularly? Then you’ll love today’s episode. If you want to master some control over the mini-dopamine rush sought with every click, best understand just how it all works.

Radio 5 Live has announced that three of their main presenters - Richard Bacon, Victoria Derbyshire and Shelagh Fogarty - are to leave the station in the autumn. Adrian Chiles and Tony Livesey are to get expanded roles. Although there will be no shortage of female co-presenters on the station, Eleanor Oldroyd's one-hour Friday afternoon show will be the only programme fronted solely by a woman. Steve hears from Jonathan Wall, Controller 5 Live about the changes.Act For Change, a project designed to address the lack of diversity in British television was launched this week with both ITV and the BBC in attendance. It comes after the BBC Director General announced plans to increase representation of Black, Asian or ethnic minority groups (BAME) on and off screen. Proposals include a new top level leadership programme, a £2.1 million Diversity Creative Talent Fund and, for around one in six people on air to be from BAME backgrounds within three years - an increase of nearly five percent. Steve hears from Simon Albury, Chair of the Campaign for Broadcasting Equality, who is concerned about the amount of money invested in the Talent Fund and Avril Russell, a black writer who says Tony Hall's plans won't help her. They are joined by Alan Yentob, the BBC's Creative Director.Facebook has revealed that it manipulated the news feeds of nearly 700,000 unknowing, randomly selected users in a psychological study, to determine how positive and negative emotions can spread on social media. The study, which has just come to light, has sparked outrage from some people and the Information Commissioner's Office is looking into it. Steve Hewlett is joined by the web psychologist Nathalie Nahai.Producer: Dianne McGregor.
Welcome to episode #397 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. What does it take to get a consumer to do something online? We can't argue that we live in a world of brand saturation. From very small, indie brands to multi-national conglomerates - every company, everywhere is hoping to get consumers to like, follow, friend and, ultimately, buy from them. The question is this: are people persuaded to do things differently in the digital space in relation to how they are persuaded in physical spaces? It's a question that has been on the mind of Nathalie Nahai for quit some time. I've had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Nathalie a handful of times last year for some corporate events at Google, and we became fast friends. Known as The Web Psychologist, Nathalie recently published her first book, Webs Of Influence - The Psychology Of Online Persuasion. She has a great podcast called, The Good, The Bad & The Dirty - Secret Psychology Of Persuasion along with her blog, The Web Psychologist and what she has to say should change the way you think about marketing, advertising and communications online.
