On this episode I chatted to musician Donovan Funk. Donovan creates alternative rock inspired by Kings of Leon, Jeff Buckley, Tom Petty, and Tor Miller; both in lyricism and musical expression. He started playing guitar at an early age, learning classic rock riffs that he heard while forming early memories with his dad. After his teen years he rediscovered his love for the instrument and began building songs based around what he could learn from the internet. Donovan Funk is currently working on an album in his home studio writing and recording original compositions to share with the world via streaming services and live performances. Using intuition and classical training from school orchestra, Donovan Funk is able to include a multitude of instrument to his productions such as bass, drums, keyboard, and cello. You can also find Donovan Funk performing at festivals, markets, and venues in Oklahoma City with a set that starts out mellow and builds to a screaming finale. I hung out with Glassnote Records singer-songwriter Tor Miller one summer night in Vancouver's Gastown by the railroad tracks. The trains are a constant noise in the background. This is a fun interview because we talked about his song "Follow Me," which still hasn't been released. Tor Miller is a young guy who loves the past and making his music sound like all the classic records that he's listened to all this life. He left university when Glassnote Records wanted to sign him--the same record label as Mumford & Sons, Phoenix, Childish Gambino and Chvrches. His latest record, Surviving The Suburbs, just came out and he'll be coming to your town soon on tour. Which celebrity does Tor get mistaken for? Which baseball player does Tor admire? Small Tines, Chicago’s newest addition to its thriving synth-pop scene, will play their debut show at Schubas on Thursday, January 28th with New York native Tor Miller. While the group’s brand of dark, lyrically-driven pop will be new to audiences, the faces in the band are familiar. The band is comprised of ex-When Clouds Attack members and Chicago musicians Todd Baran and Andy Angelos.
