This week on The MisFitNation Show, host Rich LaMonica sits down with Derek Funk—a 13-year U.S. Army Veteran and longtime contractor who served an additional 13 years supporting Identity Intelligence missions with NGIC. With 8 combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan under his belt, Derek brings a gritty, honest perspective on service, sacrifice, and what it really means to continue the mission after the uniform comes off. Today, Derek works as a Scrum Master for Booz Allen, supporting the USMC on PEO Digital, and sits on the Board of Directors for Living Free Together, an organization focused on helping military and Veteran families rebuild, reconnect, and thrive. In this episode, we'll dive into:

On this week's show, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run, spend quality time with new records from Superchunk and Charley Crockett and spin fresh tracks from Ivy, The Last Dinner Party and Margo Price. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.
What inspires a young boy to dream about a career in the US Army and then, after graduating from West Point, manage to prepare for—and survive—combat? In a “solo” installment of GoodFellows, Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, Hoover's Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow, a former national security advisor to the president, and a highly honored combat veteran, discusses his childhood in Philadelphia, the inspiring figures he encountered during his Army years, his roundabout journey to becoming an armor officer, lessons from tank battles in the Middle East, and the importance of faith. He also describes a post-service life in California, where, ironically, an Army man makes sense of world affairs while chillaxing on a paddleboard. Also joining the show: Katie McMaster, who recounts how she and her husband met (it was love at first sight), the challenges of being a military spouse, the day H.R. said goodbye to his head of hair (he shaved his head at her insistence), plus her ongoing campaign to spare her Orange County neighbors from the blare of H.R.'s favorite tunes. What do the following styles of music have in common: Ragtime, New Wave, Dubstep, and Doo-wop? This group may seem quite divergent, but they all share a common characteristic: they are mostly types of music that no one plays much anymore. Then again, you could easily argue that these are simply sub-genres of larger categories like Jazz, Rock, Reggae and R&B, and live on in some form or another in the echoes of their sound within the broader contexts, such as they are, and here and there in all manner of newer sub-genres. And those broader contexts, those foundational genres, how are they holding up these days? Jazz has gone from ruling the airwaves, dance floors and record stores to being a mostly boutique, albeit diverse, corner of the American music map. Rock has long been declared dead, but soldiers on in bands both old and new. Reggae rose to international acclaim with Bob Marley but has not approached those heights following his untimely death. R&B may be the most robust of this small sample, with artists like The Weeknd and SZA amongst its current stars. Blues music has gone through sea changes of its own over the decades, and today, it is facing headwinds with younger audiences. As our guest Brooks Mason (known by his stage name Eddie 9V) puts it, younger music fans especially often think they will not like the blues because of its perceived predictability and reliance on old formulas. And while he is not wrong, he is also a prime example of how Blues music can garner new audiences with a new approach to the genre. Part of Eddie 9V's approach is to, as he put it, lead a band that is not really a Blues band anymore. Coming Up for Air - Families Speak to Families about Addiction
This topic came up organically when we came together to record and most of the team admitted they were in a strange place. We decided to explore just that – those moments when you realize you're just not on your game (feeling off, disconnected, out of it, tired, not quite right… know what I mean?). Whether the cause is related to your Loved One's substance use or mental health struggles, or any other stressor, how do you identify what you're feeling, and move into a more balanced place? As always, the Families Speak team dives deep and shares in a generous, wise and pertinent manner. The support group that Kayla facilitates is now offered on a sliding scale.Wednesdays at 6:30pm ETEmail kaylacraftgroup@gmail.com to join or learn more(Cost should not be a barrier— please reach out if you're interested)In our FAMILIES Speak series, psychotherapist Kayla Solomon invites members from the support group she facilitates for Allies in Recovery to share their experiences navigating addiction in the family. These parents have faced similar struggles to so many others—but with Allies in Recovery, they've found a new way forward.
In this episode, Tales From The Green Room presents their conversations with Joe Marcinek and Jeremy Hoenig recorded before their respective performances during Jazz Fest 2025 in New Orleans – featuring two musicians swimming in the same music circles in the San Francisco Bay Area and nationally - and both connected with Melvin Seals! Marcinek joins the show before his stellar appearance leading Dead Funk Summit during the Crawfish Festival at The Broadside, and is joined by soulful percussionist, drummer, vocalist, Rick King – a member of the Summit on this day. King talks about getting drawn into the Grateful Dead vibe, including with his own band, Rick King's Royal Hustle, elaborating on how magic happens on stage with Marcinek. Hoenig sits down with the hosts before holding down the beat on drums at his gig with Melvin Seals & JGB at Café Istanbul - made possible by venue host Mitch Stein, responsible for curating a stellar lineup of musicians at the venue during Jazz Fest. The Marcinek segment – recorded the very day his new album, The Groove Sessions, was released - delves into Joe's late entry into music, his love for New Orleans sounds, the evolution of his Dead Funk Summit project now taking on a life of its own, and the special energy created by different musicians joining the venture around the country - including the likes of George Porter, Jr. and the aforementioned, Melvin Seals. The Crawfish King, Shaggy Davis, even makes a cameo during the interview! Hoenig talks about his own musical journey from being inspired by his father's record collection to his current gig with the iconic Seals, playing with Camille Boudin of The Radiators, and reflects on “falling into the groove” playing beats the first time he entered the New Orleans music scene. Jeremy identifies a cadre of his favorite New Orleans drummers and how playing with Melvin Seals & JGB is the perfect fit for him. Joe Marcinek, Rick King, and Jeremy Hoenig go in depth sharing their experiences in the music scene, their love for improvisation, and the collaborative spirit they embody, providing for a heartwarming and informative episode.HIGHLIGHTSWhen you have a band that plays all the time, it's easy to kind of go through the motions…where if you've never played together or it's something new, everyone's really locked in. Are we hitting the changes? Are we going to the move? Any little change that a musician does, that's when the magic happens.-Joe Marcinek on brining in different musicians to his "Dead Funk Summit"I read something about Miles Davis saying, “ I don't talk to my musicians about music, because if I would have to talk to 'em about it, I hired the wrong people in the first place. And I always think about that.-Rick King on the possibility of creating situations where magic can happen on stage among musicians, if you talk too much about it. You can imagine how proud I am to be playing this music, which for me has all the styles that I love, and the music I gravitate towards. It's blues, it's funk, it's reggae, it's jazz, it's country. It's all these rhythms. And Jerry knew, when he had his own band, he wanted to explore all those different things. So that's why I feel it's a very good fit for me… and personally, I just, I enjoy it. It lets me have everything that I love in one band.-Jeremy Hoenig on being a member of "Melvin Seals & JGB"PHOTOSBackstage Photos at NOLA Crawfish Fest – 4.29.25 – by Appelbaum ImagesSPONSOR SHOUT OUTSSpecial Thanks to Son Vo (Jerry's Middle Finger) for his expert audio engineering skills editing the interview with Joe Marcinek and Rick King- recorded in a very noisy, outdoor backstage area at the Broadside in New Orleans during the Crawfish Festival - making this episode possible! Listen to the final episode in our two-part series exploring the music of Rapture, a legendary Indianapolis funk band led by keyboardist Rodney Stepp. During the late 1970s, Rapture was a dominating force in the Indianapolis club scene. A new compilation of Rapture's music was recently issued by Now Again Records in California. The album features previously unreleased music Rapture recorded in 1977. Hear interviews with Rapture's Rodney Stepp, Lonnie Williams and Greg Russell. The Indianapolis soul music legend Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds will also share his memories of Rapture. Edmonds' band Manchild was one of Rapture's biggest rivals. Rodney Stepp was born in Indianapolis in 1952. He was raised in the historic Flanner House Homes neighborhood, directly adjacent to Indiana Avenue. Stepp rose to prominence in the Naptown music scene as a teenager, during the 1960s. His high school band the Diplomats performed with major R&B stars and scored a local hit with the song “Hum-Bug”, issued by Lamp Records in 1969. Stepp's follow-up recording “Young Girl” was issued in 1970 under the name Jazzie Cazzie and the Eight Sounds. During the early 1970s, Stepp toured the world as a keyboardist and assistant music director for The Spinners. Stepp eventually grew tired of working as a sideman with The Spinners. Yearning to explore his own musical concepts, he returned to Indianapolis in the late 1970s to form Rapture.

Jordan A. Wilson, born in Cincinnati, OH, and raised in Carrollton, KY, is a dynamic artist blending nostalgic rhythms with fresh originality. The sound has been described as a blend of Bill Withers and Jimi Hendrix, sprinkled with some alt-rock seasoning. The band has been billed with Patti LaBelle, Erykah Badu, Thundercat, Eric Gales, Mr. Sipp and Ronnie Baker Brooks at venues like the Rose Center (Dayton), Heritage Bank Center, Megacorp Pavilion, Memorial Hall (Cincy) and more.
Join our Sea Sister paid membership on Substack to watch the exclusive video interview! Thanks for being part of this community and supporting our independent storytelling platform. I sit down with Christa Funk, a water photographer based on the North Shore of Oahu who captures the raw power and beauty of Pipeline and beyond. She opens up about her unique journey from the Coast Guard Academy to becoming one of the few women photographers in heavy water, sharing how military discipline taught her to respect the ocean's power and work her way up slowly from small waves to massive Pipeline barrels. We dive deep into surf etiquette, the importance of earning your place in lineups, and how she stays in the water for hours with cliff bars tucked in her wetsuit (always bringing an extra to share with fellow photographers). She reflects on finding community in Hawai'i, dealing with doubters who said she'd fail when leaving the military, and how her faith and the memory of her late mentor guide her work. From hilarious stories about using period talk to clear crowded lineups to profound moments witnessing God in nature, this conversation explores what it means to show up with respect, build genuine relationships, and honor both the ocean and the people who've paved the way before us.Produced by Brianna Ortega. Robert “Kool” Bell is more than just a name in music history — he's the steady heartbeat behind one of the most enduring funk, soul, and R&B bands of all time: Kool & The Gang. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Robert grew up in a musical household that would shape his destiny. When the family moved to New Jersey, he and his brother Ronald Bell — later known as Khalis Bayyan — began experimenting with music as teenagers. They first formed a jazz-influenced group called the Jazziacs in 1964, bringing together local friends who shared a love for tight grooves, horn-driven melodies, and improvisation. As the '60s rolled into the '70s, the Jazziacs evolved into Kool & The Gang — a name that reflected Robert's cool, confident persona and the collective energy of the band. Bell's bass lines became the foundation of their sound: deep, rhythmic, and endlessly danceable. Their music didn't fit neatly into one box — it was a fusion of jazz sophistication, funk grit, and R&B warmth. That genre-blending approach would prove to be their secret weapon in crossing musical and cultural boundaries.Kool & The Gang's early years were built on relentless gigging and honing their live performance skills. They became a powerhouse act on the club circuit before breaking into the mainstream with hits like “Jungle Boogie” and “Hollywood Swinging” in the early '70s. Bell's bass was front and centre, locking in with the drums to create the irresistible rhythms that would become the band's trademark. By the late '70s and early '80s, Kool & The Gang had perfected their party anthem formula. Songs like “Celebration,” “Get Down On It,” and “Ladies' Night” became global smashes, cementing their place on dance floors around the world.Robert “Kool” Bell wasn't just the bandleader — he was its anchor. His leadership helped navigate the group through lineup changes, shifting musical trends, and the unpredictable turns of the industry. While many bands faded after their initial burst of fame, Kool & The Gang adapted and thrived, appealing to multiple generations of fans. Their music found new life through sampling in hip-hop and R&B, exposing their grooves to entirely new audiences.Recognition came in waves. Kool & The Gang earned two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, and were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. They've sold over 70 million albums worldwide, and their tracks have been featured in countless films, commercials, and TV shows. Through it all, Robert “Kool” Bell remained a visible and active figure, still performing live well into the 21st century.Bell's nickname “Kool” wasn't just a stage name — it reflected his calm presence, stylish demeanor, and ability to keep the band grounded. Off stage, he's been involved in philanthropic work and entrepreneurial ventures, including a line of French wines inspired by his international travels. Yet, no matter the project, music has always been at the core of his life.Today, Robert “Kool” Bell stands as a symbol of endurance in the music industry. From basement jam sessions in New Jersey to sold-out arenas around the globe, his journey is one of passion, persistence, and an unshakable groove. Kool & The Gang's catalogue continues to inspire — not just because of the songs themselves, but because of the spirit Bell infused into every note. His story is a reminder that true legends aren't just made by hits; they're made by the dedication to keep the music alive for decades. For fans, Robert “Kool” Bell isn't just the man who played the bass — he's the reason Kool & The Gang has remained one of the most celebrated bands in funk, R&B, and soul history. And as long as there's a party to start, a dance floor to fill, or a crowd to move, you can bet that somewhere, Robert “Kool” Bell will still be laying down the groove.I hope you'll enjoy our chat today with Robert 'Kool'Bell.
