VC funding into Irish SMEs soars in first quarter to €533m - IVCA

Venture capital funding into Irish SMEs soared to €532.8m in the first quarter of 2025, according to the Irish Venture Capital Association VenturePulse survey published today in association with William Fry. This was a record for a first quarter and represents a year-to-year increase of over 100%. But Mr Gerry Maguire, chairperson, Irish Venture Capital Association said: "It should be noted that over 80% of the total in this quarter was due to deals worth over €10m." He said that the picture for start-ups raising under €3m was less rosy and this may reflect an imbalance in the market. The first quarter excluded the impact of US "Liberation Day" tariffs on 2nd April. Mr Maguire said that anecdotal evidence suggested that the uncertainty and caution caused by this, especially amongst international investors, is likely to show up in following quarters. Sarah-Jane Larkin, director general, IVCA said that funding by international venture capital into Irish companies rose to 82% of the total, compared to 71% in the same quarter last year. "This is a doubled edged sword. While it reflects the high quality and potential of Irish tech firms and demand by overseas investors, it also reflects Ireland Inc's vulnerability to international influences if the tide goes out." Deals in the €30m+ category grew by nearly 90% to €296.8m. Funding in the €10m-€30m range rose by 184% to €132m. Deals between €5m-€10m grew 138% to €43.8m. Funding in the €3-€5m increased 346% to €35m from €7.8m the previous quarter. Deals in the €1m-€3m category fell by 5% to €21.6m. Deals under €1m fell by 42% to €3.6m from €6.2m the previous year. There was also a big fall in the number of deals in this category, down from 21 to six. Seed funding, or first rounds raised by SMEs, marked time, falling by 3% to €39.3m from €40.4m the previous year. The total number of deals in the first quarter was 43, slightly ahead of the same quarter last year (41). Top five deals in the first quarter were lifescience company, Let's get Checked which raised €150m. Cybersecurity firm, Tines raised €115m followed by AI company, Protex AI (€31.8m), drone delivery firm, Manna (€27m) and medical technology manufacturer, Perfuze (€22m). Kota Closes $14.5M Series A to Build the Internet's Employee Benefits Infrastructure

Kota, the insurance benefits platform and API, has announced it has raised $14.5m in Series A funding bringing total funding to $22.9 million. The round was led by Eurazeo, along with existing investors EQT Ventures, Northzone, Frontline Ventures and new investors in 9Yards and Plug and Play. The investment will power Kota's mission to make employee benefits globally accessible and frictionless for employees - delivered through its intuitive platform and flexible API. Alongside their Series A, they are also announcing that they've obtained their Central Bank of Ireland Authorisation, making it one of the few technology platforms to be regulated . Kota is rebuilding employee benefits from the ground up. Millions miss out on essentials like pensions and healthcare - not because employers don't care, but because the system is broken. Legacy providers, PDFs, and manual processes make benefits inaccessible and unmanageable. Kota fixes this. Like Revolut did for banking, Kota delivers a modern, user-first experience for employee benefits. It integrates directly with insurers and pension providers, giving employees real-time access and control, and HR teams a single, reliable platform to manage everything. By combining their regulation, infrastructure, and user friendly platform and app, they make benefits effortless for HR & Finance, and engaging for employees. The funding will be used to expand the Kota team, increase the variety of insurance carrier partners in its products, and accelerate customer acquisition. Luke Mackey Founder and CEO said "Employee benefits, which can make up 25% of total compensation, are systematically undervalued and expensive. I experienced this as a founder and a GM -- managing benefits in email, between brokers and insurance companies, completely disconnected and alien from anything else in the business. It's entirely out of date. Ultimately, no one on the team connected or engaged with them, no matter how much we invested. It's not surprising. Insurance benefits are delivered in clunky portals or in PDFs, which is so un engaging compared to the financial experiences employees are used to.Kota integrates directly with insurance companies so we can control that experience and make it easy to roll out and run benefits, no matter who you are or where your team is. This means that employees can quickly understand, enrol, access coverage, retirement plans, or other benefits, and actually value them." Elise Stern from Eurazeo said "Kota really stood out to us. With a tech-first approach, they've built a robust technical and financial infrastructure: deep integrations with insurers across dozens of countries, visibility across the benefits stack, and a seamless API that allows partners - from HRIS to payroll - to embed benefits natively." Since launching in 2023, Kota has helped hundreds of small and medium sized companies seamlessly access, easily manage, along with tens of thousands of employees understand and value their cover. Kota integrates with and offers some of Europe's leading insurance providers, like Vitality in the UK, ONVZ in the Netherlands, Sanitas in Spain, Irish Life Health in Ireland, Allianz Global Care internationally, and many more. Kota powers benefits for Remote.com, and has become the benefits platform of choice for leading scale-ups across Europe such as Zoe Health, Poolside, Carwow, Tines, &Open and Protex AI. Last year, they launched Kota Embed, their embedded insurance offering for HR platforms to make insurance benefits available to their customers without leaving their HRIS or Payroll tool, with customers like Remote, Helios and insurance companies like Irish Life Health as customers. Historically employee benefits have lived offline outside the stack that HR and employees have come accustomed to and are difficult to manage and understand. Employee benefits, while growing into a $70bn market, are still completely unfit for lean, forward-thinking start-ups and scale-ups - parti...

20 tech companies from across the island of Ireland have ranked in the Deloitte EMEA Technology Fast 500 list, which recognises the 500 fastest-growing technology companies across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Two tech companies across the island have ranked in the top 50: Wayflyer and Fibrus. Four ranked in the top 100, including Tines and Buymedia. Deloitte 2024 Fast 50 winner, Wayflyer, placed 43 in the rankings and achieved a revenue growth rate of 3,169%. Fibrus ranked 48 and achieved a revenue growth of 3,009%. This company also ranked 2 on Deloitte's 2024 Fast 50 list. Tines ranked 55 with revenue growth of 2,786%. Buymedia ranked 73 with revenue growth of 2,208%. The average growth rate across all 500 ranked companies is 1,585%. Fast 50 Lead and Deloitte partner, James Toomey, said: "The Deloitte EMEA Technology Fast 500 highlights the strength of Ireland's domestic tech sector and the extraordinary abilities of our entrepreneurs. Even when benchmarked against the fastest-growing tech companies from across a wide geographical sphere, Ireland, a small island of around 7 million people, has still got 20 companies in this list. "Congratulations in particular to Wayflyer, Fibrus, Tines and Buymedia who are in the highest 100 ranked companies out of 500 and topped the list in our 2024 Fast 50 awards. We marked the 25th anniversary of Fast 50 in 2024 and it reminded me how intertwined the story of modern Ireland and technology is. Awards like these show that despite global uncertainty, the future for domestic tech growth in Ireland is bright and we must continue to support these companies to grow Domestic Direct Investment (DDI). "I look forward to opening applications for the 2025 Fast 50 ranking over the summer." At the top of the EMEA list is i-charging, a Portuguese company specialising in hardware and software for electric vehicle charging solutions, with a growth rate of 65,881%. Sorgen som plutselig kunne komme over henne. Frykten for å bruke stemmen, særlig i forsamlinger. Følelsen av at noen ville ta henne om hun gjorde noe feil.I sin nydelige bok, FRI FRA OVERGREP, deler Tine sin historie. We've got a few compelling topics to discuss within SecOps today. First, Tim insists it's possible to automate a large amount of SecOps work, without the use of generative AI. Not only that, but he intends to back it up by tracking the quality of this automated work with an ISO standard unknown to cybersecurity. I've often found useful lessons and wisdom outside security, so I get excited when someone borrows from another, more mature industry to help solve problems in cyber. In this case, we'll be talking about Acceptable Quality Limits (AQL), an ISO standard quality assurance framework that's never been used in cyber. Segment Resources: Introducing AQL for cyber. AQL - How we do it An AQL 'calculator' you can play around with We couldn't decide what to talk to Allie about, so we're going with a bit of everything. Don't worry - it's all related and ties together nicely. First, we'll discuss AI and automation in the SOC - Allie is covering this trend closely, and we want to know if she's seeing any results yet here. Next, we'll discover SecOps data management - the blood that delivers oxygen to the SOC muscles. The funding will be used to expand the team, accelerate product development, and bring an integration layer for AI to market. Founded in late 2024, Jentic is a communication middleware layer for AI agents, which enables developers and organisations to easily hook their AI agents up to other systems, and manage and control their communication. It aims to be the platform that unites the expanding ecosystem of AI agents, from those offered by tech giants to bespoke agents created by in-house teams. Over the past few years, the AI sector has experienced unprecedented growth, driven by rapid innovation and a surge in investment. An AI agent is a software program that uses AI to plan how to accomplish goals and tasks, and performs the steps in that plan by connecting to other software systems. An agent is like a "self-driving" computer program, which has its goal set by a human user, but performs all the necessary actions itself. Jentic is focusing on the connection layer between agents and all other software, increasing agent capability, maximising reliability and helping organisations monitor and manage large-scale AI deployments. Jentic is founded by an experienced team of tech entrepreneurs, including CEO Sean Blanchfield, former co-founder of PageFair (acquired by Blockthrough) and DemonWare (acquired by Activision Blizzard), COO Dorothy Creaven, former Managing Director at Rent The Runway and co-founder of Element Wave, Michael Cordner, co-founder of Mindconnex, and Dr. Tilman Schaefer, a founding team member at DemonWare. "We're building critical infrastructure to enable developers to easily and securely hook their AI systems up to the world's APIs,"said Sean Blanchfield, co-founder and CEO of Jentic. "This is the future of automation, and it needs a new kind of integration layer to manage the unique complexity, reliability and security issues that arise when AI becomes highly connected. We have a strong history of building category-leading middleware, and this funding will allow us to quickly expand our world-class team, match the tremendous pace of AI development, and deliver a platform that empowers developers and organisations to deploy sophisticated AI with confidence." For developers, Jentic streamlines API integration for AI agents, automatically matching them with optimal tools as they execute tasks. For executives, it provides centralised oversight of agent operations across the organisation, enabling monitoring, security management, and access control. "At Elkstone, we are committed to backing ground-breaking startups capable of transforming industries," said Niall McEvoy, Head of Venture at Elkstone. "Jentic's clear vision to establish a universal AI integration layer aligns perfectly with our mission to drive technological innovation. Backing experienced serial founders with a clear global market opportunity underpins why Elkstone is leading this funding round, and we are enthusiastic to support Jentic's growth." Several experienced tech leaders sit on Jentic's board of advisors including Steven Collins (CTO of Unity, former CTO of King, co-founder of Havok and Swrve), Patricia Scanlon (Ireland's AI Ambassador and founder/former CEO of Soapbox Labs, acquired in 2023 by Curriculum Associates), Colm Long (former VP of Global Operations at Facebook and Director of Operations at Google, previously COO at Tines), Fergal Reid (VP of AI at Intercom) and Mark Cummins (former founder/CEO of Pointy and Plink, which were respectively acquired in 2010 and 2020 by Google). I've been on the fence when it comes to phishing simulation, partly because I used to phish people as a penetration tester. It always succeeded, and always would succeed, as long as it's part of someone's job to open emails and read them. Did that make phishing simulation a Sisyphean task? Was there any value in making some of the employees more 'phishing resistant'? And who is in charge of these simulations? "I can't tell you how many times over the years I've made a better decision as it relates to a certain part of the business because I've had to do it firsthand myself. At some stage I knew what the problem was and I knew how hard it was or I was able to appreciate the challenges that these kind of new hires were experiencing because I had done it firsthand. So I think founders should almost do like every job for like a little bit just to get that experience."
