The true story of the murders that terrorized New Jersey beach towns for nearly a decade.Beachgoers usually watch out for dangers like riptides or sharks—but from 1974 to 1983, a different fear gripped the New Jersey shore: young women were disappearing. Their abductor was Richard Biegenwald, a man released for good behavior after serving seventeen years in prison for murder and spending time in a psychiatric facility.Police arrested him on suspicion of rape, and it was not until they connected him to a woman's death in Asbury Park that he finally stopped his rampage. Investigators later linked him to nine murders and convicted him of five. In this account, former New Jersey state trooper John O'Rourke narrates the chilling story of the Jersey Shore Thrill Killer.https://amzn.to/3UU8EluBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
In reporting his 2012 New York Times bestselling biography Bruce-widely regarded as the "definitive biography of Bruce Springsteen" (Asbury Park Press)-celebrated music journalist Peter Ames Carlin gained unprecedented access to Springsteen's inner circle and to The Boss himself. Now, timed to the 50th anniversary of the release of the groundbreaking album, he brings us TONIGHT IN JUNGLELAND: The Making of Born to Run (Doubleday; August 5, 2025; $30), an intimate, behind-the-scenes account, based on brand new reporting, of the writing, recording, and making of one of the most iconic records in rock history. From the opening piano notes of "Thunder Road" to the final outro of "Jungleland," with American anthems like "Born to Run" and "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out" in between, Bruce Springsteen's seminal album, Born to Run, established Springsteen as a creative force in rock and roll. It is indisputably his crowning achievement, which launched him to international superstardom-but it almost never happened.By the spring of 1974, the situation at Columbia Records had become dire for Springsteen. His first two albums had been highly praised but had gained almost no commercial traction. Columbia was not going to pay for a full third album. They agreed to give him enough money to record just one more song; if it sounded like a hit, or even something with a chance of radio play, they'd consider financing a full album. Bruce was determined to craft a song powerful enough to stake the rest of his career on, so he sat on his small bed near the Jersey Shore and picked up his guitar. He listened to the traffic outside his window and envisioned the muscle cars he saw roaring around Asbury Park. Then he pulled some chords out of the air and wrote the words, "Baby, we were born to run."With his back against the wall, Springsteen wrote what has been hailed as a perfect album, a defining moment, and a roadmap for what would become a legendary career. TONIGHT IN JUNGLELAND details the writing and recording of every song on the album, a tortuous process that betrayed the fault lines in Springsteen's psyche and career, even as it revealed the depth of his vision and the power of his determination. It's a journey and a story-from the first harmonica notes of "Thunder Road" and its opening lyric, "The screen door slams, Mary's dress sways," to the "Barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge" in "Jungleland," with its massive, theatrical finale of raised and crushed dreams against a backdrop of Springsteen's hopeful and melancholic New Jersey ("There's an opera out on the Turnpike / There's a ballet being fought out in the alley. . . Tonight, in Jungleland")-that combines Carlin's signature narrative style, trademark energy, lush music writing, and intellectual style, with unprecedented access to Bruce himself, his bandmates, and his longtime collaborators.A must-read for any music fan, TONIGHT IN JUNGLELAND takes us inside a hallowed creative process and lets us experience history. But don't take our word for it; let Bruce's own words, told to Carlin, reflect the intimacy of the book's storytelling: "You know, I'm very, very fond of [the album]. And on its anniversaries, I get in a car and I play it from start to finish, and I end up at West End court where I wrote it. Right before the end, right before 'Jungleland.' And I sit there by the curb and I let 'Jungleland' play, as I sit outside the little house I wrote it in."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

The Morro Castle shipwreck of 1934 was a tragic maritime disaster involving a luxury passenger liner operated by the Ward Line. On September 8, 1934, while en route from Havana to New York, the ship caught fire off the coast of New Jersey near Asbury Park, resulting in the deaths of 137 passengers and crew. The fire, which was later suspected to be an act of arson, spread rapidly due to strong winds and flammable materials onboard, forcing many to jump into rough seas. The burning vessel eventually ran aground on the beach, becoming a chilling symbol of maritime safety failures. The disaster led to sweeping changes in U.S. maritime safety regulations. Bruce Springsteen was keenly aware and excited by the sounds of the CBGBs scene during the Seventies. With his own bands, the Boss performed in the same venues associated with punk rock and ultimately wrote songs for Patti Smith and the Ramones. Yet Springsteen's sound has remained distinct from punk rock as it emanated from New York. In the seventh episode of Soundscapes NYC, host Ryan Purcell talks with Bruce Springsteen biographer Jim Cullen and Melissa Ziobro the head curator of the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University about Springsteen's complicated relationship with punk rock in 1970s New York. As an NJ native, the Boss was a so-called “Bridge-and-Tunnel-Boy” but that socio-cultural infrastructure worked both ways. By the end of the Seventies, Springsteen did not need to travel to New York to engage with the punk sound. Punk culture was traveling to Asbury Park, NJ. Jim Cullen is a historian of American popular culture and has taught at several colleges and universities, including Harvard, Brown, and Sarah Lawrence College. He was a longtime faculty member and History Department chair at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in New York before moving to the recently founded Greenwich Country Day School in 2020. Cullen is the author of multiple award-winning book books on music including Born in the USA: Bruce Springsteen and the American Tradition (Harper Collins, 1997). From 2020: What do Eddie Van Halen, Johnny Cash, Kramer Guitars and development of the famous Asbury Park area all have in common??? The great Henry Vaccaro, Sr.!!! We kept this episode under wraps for quite a while, but it's a must see. Henry is the former owner of Kramer Guitars and through that role, developed close friendships with Eddie Van Halen and Johnny Cash. He also teamed up to bring one of the most famous guitars in history into the Kramer line up - the fabled Frankenstrat - used and designed by none other than Eddie Van Halen. With extra special thanks to our dear friends at Riverview Studios, we present our Henry Vaccaro, Sr. Episode! Enjoy!

Thursday is the final day of classes for New York City public school students, but attendance has dipped significantly. A WNYC analysis found that many schools saw lower attendance this June compared to previous years. Meanwhile, New Jersey is spotlighting its ban on beach smoking with a 20-foot inflatable cigarette display in Asbury Park. Plus, in this week's Politics Brief, WNYC's Jimmy Vielkind and Brigid Bergin break down the implications of Zohran Mamdani's presumptive win in the Democratic mayoral primary.
Two people were bitten by sharks on Hilton Head Island within one week, and a 9-year-old girl was seriously injured in Florida. Experts stress that shark attacks remain rare. Another danger during the summer outdoor season is lightning and several incidents have been reported this month. The latest one happened Tuesday afternoon. Emergency services responded to a call at Lake Murray Dam, located around 15 miles west of Columbia, South Carolina, where 20 people were hit by a single bolt of lightning. And a beach umbrella turned dangerous in Asbury Park on Wednesday morning when strong winds sent it airborne, impaling a lifeguard as she set it up. Learn more about your ad choices. Send us a textPete stops by the show to discuss The Dandy Warhols, Studio vs performing, when he learned guitar, and more.****Following a triumphant 2024 with the release of their overwhelmingly critic-hailed twelfth studio album ROCKMAKER featuring Frank Black, Slash, and Debbie Harry, a packed-to-the-gills national tour, and a completely sold out West Coast 30th Anniversary-as-a-band string of dates, Portland's iconoclastic and always surprising alt-rock band THE DANDY WARHOLS are returning to the road for a handful of East Coast shows that kick off on May 9th at Asbury Park, NJ's Stone Pony and wrap with a handful of NYC dates at Bowery Ballroom and Mercury Lounge. Included in the dates is an intimate, acoustic-ish late afternoon performance on Saturday, May 17th at the sexy Two Fifteen Lounge in NYC's Public Hotel, preceding their show the same evening at Bowery Ballroom. Loose and loungey, the cozy event will allow fans to sip signature cocktails and rub elbows with the band (and get autographs and pics too!) before and after a very special and rare stripped down performance.Following last fall's revved-up and greased banger, “The Summer of Hate'' which Q Magazine called “buzz-heavy, raw punk” and Post-Punk.com “a dark-rock manifesto, fueled by gritty guitars and fuzzed-out vocals with a supple, sexy rhythm,” the new single opens the gates for the release of their twelfth album ROCKMAKER. Always experimenting and pushing the boundaries of their own creativity (their previous album Tafelmuzik Means More When You're Alone was a three-and-a-half-hour exploration of what The AU Report characterized as a “soundtrack that would typically score a mid-16th century banquet”), this album delves deeper into minor guitar chords that often characterize post-punk, deep metal, or even goth.Sometimes we have a very focused idea of what we want,” Taylor-Taylor says. “It's generally what we want somebody else to make but since they never do, we have to. It has a very specific sound. There aren't a lot of heavy guitar records currently coming out that we like, so that was the impetus for ROCKMAKER.”******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. What happens when you finally stop resisting — and start listening to the signs?Welcome to the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. In this emotional and courageous episode, poet and author Armen Kaymakcian shares part one of his powerful personal story — a journey of hardship, recovery, and purpose.Growing up in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Armen lived through life-altering events that shaped his path in unimaginable ways. His memoir, He Calls Me Redeemed, was written in rooms instead of chapters as his family owned a hotel - those rooms were filled with stories of both struggle and strength. At just 12 years old he was sexually assaulted by a trusted friend of the family. That went on for some time and the trauma from that experience began to shape Armen in a way that was hard for him to come back from.In his early adult years, Armen faced challenges that led him down a dark path. That path included selling drugs, drug addiction, stealing, and trouble with the law. But at one of the lowest moments of his life, he began listening — to his inner voice, to the signs around him, and to something greater. A spiritual shift and a reconnection to faith sparked a transformation that helped him begin again. Today, Armen is a husband, a father of three, and an advocate for healing and redemption through storytelling. Armen's book is a must-read for anyone anywhere who is dealing with overcoming hurdles or has over-come them already. It is a story of strength, resiliency, and courage. There is so much to be learned from him sharing his very private story.
Behold the prodigal sons of Asbury Park, NJ! It's a total joy to welcome red-hot buzz band DOGS IN A PILE to the Upful LIFE. This colorful conversation with all 5 members went down mid-Feb. '25, during Jam Cruise 21. Though DOGS are somewhat of a young band, their meteoric ascent certainly shreds for itself. So I wanted a peek behind the curtain, to see what makes these boys tick, and find out what it's like riding a rocketship into jam-scene success. Wrangling together all the Dogs' cats into one cruise cabin during the biggest rager of the year is no small feat, however these dudes were definitely stoked to connect, and once we got established they really opened up. Dogs In A Pile proved a humble, humorous, hungry pack; after wrapping the insightful chat these Jersey boys definitely felt like my new homies. So much so that I chased the Dogs convo with the return of my oldest/dearest pal Jason Abrams (J.A.), who comes back to the Upful podwaves talkin' summer tours and a whole lot more. 0:00 - ep.088 preview 03:45 - SPONSOR - Down By The River @ Cactus Jack's CO 7/19 06:00 - The Upful Update 11:15 - Introducing: DOGS IN A PILE 17:45 - INTERVIEW / Dogs [44 min] 1:01:30 - Crossover to JASON ABRAMS 1:07:15 - CONVERSATION w/ J.A. Hour 1 We are live from D'Jais for Kickoff To Summer. We talked about going out to dinner in Asbury Park because it was close to Al's house. It was a BYOB which Boomer doesn't quite understand. Gio went to Top Golf by himself yesterday because Jerry bailed on him. Game 2 of Knicks/Pacers is tonight and Gio is confident they will win. Boomer thinks it will be a 7-game series. Gio thinks Jalen Brunson will ‘take us home'. We talked about Wally losing the Larry Johnson 4-point ball. Jerry is here for his first update of the day, but first we did a Chef IQ giveaway by playing ‘2 Lies & A Truth'. Adam Schein did not take the game 1 loss very well. OKC went up 2-0 over the T-Wolves. The Yankees beat the Rangers 1-0. In the final segment of the hour, Larry in Indiana drove here this morning. Hour 2 We started the hour doing a shot with a listener. We then threw Wendy's breakfast to the crowd. Gio pumped the crowd up with some Jersey shore fist bumping music. Jerry returns for an update and plays a sports music game with 2 contestants. The Yankees play the Rockies, who have only won 8 games this season. In the final segment of the hour, NJ fireman Nick, who went viral because of a situation with his wife, is on stage. Hour 3 The hour starts with the Mayor of BELMAR, Gerald BUCCAFUSCO joins us. After the Mayor, Tracy from Atlantic Highlands joins us live on stage. She plays trivia against Al. Jerry returns for an update but instead plays a game show. In the final segment of the hour, NGXB, a piano player, joins us to play some songs. Hour 4 Country artist Chris Lane joins us live at D'Jais in BELMAR. John Fox from CBS-FM stops by. He's the morning man over there and helped us with Chris Lane. Jerry returns for his final update of the day and previews Knicks/Pacers and has a Moment of The Day involving Larry from Indiana.

Here are some songs from your life, "Backstreet Girl" by the Rolling Stones, "Joey" by Bob Dylan, "Road to Nowhere" by the Talking Heads, "Boy In The Bubble" by Paul Simon, "July Fourth, Asbury Park", better known as "Sandy" by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, "Wouldn't It Be Nice" by the Beach Boys. They all rely heavily on the accordion. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is the biggest shock. Even if you know that song, it might never have occurred to you that Brian Wilson uses I'm pretty sure two accordions to make the primary propulsive musical fabric of that song. The last two decades of indie music ought to have normalized the accordion - Tom Waits, REM, Arcade Fire, The Decemberists... I could go on. It has also endured years of ridicule here in the United States, even while it remained beloved and esteemed in Argentina, Paris, and almost everywhere else in the world. Now, it's enjoying a renaissance here in the States. This hour, we celebrate that with accordion rock stars of all styles. You'll meet a man who is reclaiming the accordion, outfitting his latest version with MIDI controls, so it can mimic voice and other instruments, a woman who specializes in klezmer, and a man who plays his accordion in a trio alongside a guitar and tuba. You also meet other accordion rock stars, including James Fearnley from The Pogues. Just try to tell him that the squeezebox isn’t cool.
