Lightning in a Bottle – A Love Letter to Asbury Lanes is a raw, intimate, and unfiltered photographic chronicle of one of New Jersey's most beloved underground venues. Shot over 11 years by photographer Mike McLaughlin, the book captures the heart and soul of Asbury Lanes, in the heart of Asbury Park—a vintage bowling alley turned DIY music venue—before its redevelopment in 2015.We had the opportunity to talk long-distance with Mike McLaughlin, a fantastic photographer with a catalog of images documenting "The Old" Asbury Lanes.  Home to the party faithful and wayward souls, Asbury Lanes was, for a time, the coolest place to both play and spectate.  Asbury Park's version of Max's Kansas City and CBGBs, The Lanes was a safe place for those who needed safe spaces to dance, sing, and create.  Mike talked about his start in photography and his time at Asbury Lanes.  And like everything else in life, he talked about when it was time to move on, and somehow land in Italy. Long before he became the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara was a first-generation Indian immigrant, listening to Bollywood music in his childhood home outside of Asbury Park, New Jersey. It's no surprise that Bruce Springsteen became one of Preet's heroes – though it was a surprise when ‘The Boss' gave Preet a personal shoutout at a 2012 concert. On today's show, we're chatting with Hailey and Hallie –two best friends who turned their high school thrifting hobby into a thriving brick-and-mortar vintage shop in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Hailey and Hallie met in high school gym class, and bonded over their shared love of thrifting, Tumblr, fashion, and magazines. They started thrifting together and listing their finds on Depop as a fun creative outlet after school. As they grew up, the shop's story evolved – the duo opened their first brick-and-mortar store in a tiny beach town while finishing up school. They've since moved their brick-and-mortar twice– landing in the heart of downtown Asbury Park. Along the way, they've built an incredible community, devoted customers, and hosted fashion shows that sold nearly a thousand tickets! Mike Delevante recently released his debut album, September Days, on Truly Handmade Records, a label founded by Guy Clark LLC's board of directors (including Grammy-winning author, producer, and filmmaker Tamara Saviano, who fell in love with the album at first listen). Not many artists release their first solo record two decades after their debut album but that's the case for Delevante, who spent the 1990s recording and touring as half of trailblazing Americana duo the Delevantes with his older brother Bob. The duo's acclaimed releases on Rounder and Capitol records in that era made a splash — Long About That Time (Rounder) was the first #1 debut album on Gavin's newly created Americana radio chart —and found them touring with like-minded artists including John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Levon Helm and others. So, while it's hardly the first musical endeavor for Delevante, September Days is an important step for a musician who'd never put the spotlight directly on himself, until now. Produced by Joe Pisapia, whose production credits include work with Ben Folds, Guster, k.d. lang and many others, the album's shimmering guitars and instantly memorable melodies recall some of the 90's best guitar pop artists (Matthew Sweet, Freedy Johnston, Ron Sexsmith, The Jayhawks and more).  That decision was a long time coming. The Delevante brothers were New Jersey natives who've made Nashville their home since the ‘90s, along with frequent collaborator and co-producer, Garry Tallent of the E Street Band. Mike had shifted gears, focusing on visual arts. Both he and his brother had studied art in college, with Bob also turning more toward visual projects in the 2000s, but Bob had also made three solo records along the way. It was Tallent who got the brothers back into music. He'd enlisted them to sing on his 2019 solo album More Like Me, then invited them to be part of a live show he was doing in Asbury Park with Southside Johnny and special guest Bruce Springsteen. They had such a blast that “I felt myself getting pulled back into it,” Mike says. The result was 2021's A Thousand Turns. Tom founded Theatre Now in 2013 and has been the Producing Artistic Director since its inception, working on the development of new musicals through writers' groups, productions, readings, workshops and other developmental programs. Through Theatre Now, Tom produces the annual SOUND BITES Festival of New 10-minute Musicals now entering its twelfth year with over 40 titles available for licensing through Theatre Now's partnership with Music Theatre International (MTI). With Theatre Now Tom has worked with over 200 theatre writers on the development of new musicals.  Prior to Theatre Now Tom was the Artistic Director of ReVision Theatre, a regional theatre in Asbury Park, NJ where he produced The Who's Tommy, and the NJ premiere of Spring Awakening to critical and audience acclaim at sold-out capacity. He helped develop and produced the musical premieres Kingdom by Aaron Jafferis and Ian Willams, a hip-hop rock musical based on the Latin Kings (Winner Best Musical 2008, New Jersey Star Ledger), The Break-up Notebook, The Lesbian Musical by Lori Scarlett, David Manning and Patricia Cotter staring Beth Malone (Winner Best Musical 2010, New Jersey Star. Ledger) and The Bikinis, a jukebox musical featuring hits from the 60's with an original book by Jim Hindman, Ray Roderick and Joseph Baker, featuring Annie Golden, Cheryl Freeman, Karen Quakenbush and Kathy Morath. Following the Revision Theatre's production, The Bikinis was produced at The Goodspeed Opera House and many of the shows Tom has developed have been produced commercially and presented throughout the U.S. at regional theatres. Also with Revision Theatre he produced and directed Hello, Dolly! Starring Richard Skipper as Carol Channing and The Rocky Horror Show (Winner Year End Best Theatre Awards 2011, New Jersey Star Ledger and Tri-City News).  In 1995 Tom founded The Genesius Theatre Guild a non-profit organization dedicated to new works. Notable writers included Andrew Lippa, Adam Gwon, Joe Iconis along with Kerrigan and Lowdermilk who created work through Genesius' new musicals Upstairs At Red cabaret program. Tom worked with playwright Itamar Moses and produced the premiere production of Jonathan Tolin's The Last Sunday In June which became the highlight of Rattlestick Productions 2003 off Broadway season and went on to its commercial New York run at the Century Center Theatre.  Tom was a member of Circle Repertory Company as a LAB member and directed at other prominent NYC companies that included Naked Angels and Ensemble Studio Theatre in addition to directing many plays and musicals at regional theatres across the U.S. Tom attended New York University as an acting major and studied acting with Stella Adler and directing with Suzanne Shepherd and Larry Arrick. ​He has worked in all areas of professional theatre: regional, summer, dinner theatre, off and on Broadway. Tom has taught acting, musical theatre  classes and workshops at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA), Wagner College, New York University, The Creative Acting Company, NYC. Jon Caspi and the First Gun have been gracing the Asbury Park (and local area) with their homegrown rock and roll.  The band, made of the nicest fellows, came into the Asbury Park Vibes studio for an intimate three-song set.  They also stuck around to chat about their new EP, AIRPORT PLAZA.Caspi has been a longstanding figure in the NJ indie, singer/songwriter, alternative, and punk scenes. In the late 80s, he fronted the new wave band Bouncing Off Bob, which charted on the national college radio CMJ Top 100. He started as a solo artist in the early 2000s with the release of three albums, which received national radio play, and one was converted into a musical theater production with sold-out shows.
