Zach Williams is the founding member and frontman for The Lone Bellow, an Americana Folk featuring Zach, Kanene Donehey Pipkin and Brian Elmquist. Best known for their powerhouse vocals and emotive blend of folk, country, and soul, the storied trio exploded onto the scene in 2014 with their self-titled debut, which made a bunch of end-of-year lists and garnered praise from respected outlets like People Magazine, Entertainment Weekly and NPR, who lovingly dubbed them an ‘earnest and magnetic folk-pop [trio] built to shake the rafters.'Zach got into songwriting after a personal tragedy—his wife, who was paralyzed in a horseback riding accident, inspired him to channel his grief into music. He'd been writing songs for a few years but the accident pushed him into bolder creative spaces and out into the NYC folk scene. Rockwood Music Hall, a mainstay of many an indie folk musician, played a key early role in Williams' success. Initially performing as a solo artist, Williams eventually brought in Pipkin and Elmquist, both of whom shared a similar passion for Americana music and storytelling. The trio quickly became a tight-knit unit, blending their diverse influences into a distinctive sound that continues to turn heads a decade later. The Bellow moved to Nashville in 2016, made a bunch more records, and shortly after this taping, performed a live concert with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.Zach and I sat down to talk about the evolution of his music and career, now in its second decade. Among the things I wanted to know was what he —at the outset of his creative journey — imagined a successful career to look like, versus what it eventually became. We touched on those early days, how the music scene has changed with the domination of Spotify and its ilk. He also played one live in the studio. If you're feeling what we do, take a second to like and subscribe. It helps a lot. Thanks for listening! A recent 3-month residency at The Bitter End and a slot as a featured artist at SXSW 2024 cement her status. She's shared stages with Juliet Ivy, Theo Kandel, and more, even gracing The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Her original track "Back To The Beginning" made waves, landing in NPR Tiny Desk's Top Shelf Segment. Rachel's brand partnerships, including AEA Microphones and Virgin Hotels, showcase her versatility, while her performance of the national anthem at a Rangers MSG game underscored her impact beyond music. Who posted on Instagram in November about a pop-up show in NYC's East Village date coincident with my few weeks there that made me cancel my plans and hop the subway downtown to catch her play for a half hour? You guessed it, Mia Morris! This is the interview you don't want to miss. You're welcome in advance! Find out why I not only followed her as a drummer but was taken in by her unique abilities to not only play all instruments but to loop all instruments and play studio versions of her songs, on stage, LIVE in her "One Woman Show". Having rubbed elbows with the likes of Fountains of Wayne (having written a sequel to "Stacy's Mom") and members of All-American Rejects, had features in America's Got Talent and even having opened for Candlebox and Collective Soul, her resume is impressive to say the least. But when you find out she's 19 and rockin' the pocket the way she does in every way, well you see why I ABSOLUTELY HAD TO interview her on the show. Approaching her backstage after the show in NYC at Rockwood Music Hall, she agreed to do the interview. She's here and has given some of the greatest insight yet into the pocket as we do on the show. Her fascinating stories and perceptive and observant viewpoint are keys to her success in touring, session and live drumming, studio and television, "WOW!" is all we can say. Tune in now to hear one of the best episodes. Laugh along with us. This was a fun one! Can't wait for you to hear it so just press play now and get it over with already... you know you want to! DO IT!

It is a privilege to welcome actress and singer Lauren Marcus to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Stephen Mosher of BroadwayWorld best described Lauren: "Take all the female rock stars you have known and loved and roll them up into one. Take, for instance, Linda Ronstadt's soul, Tina Turner's sexiness, Pat Benatar's grit, Debbie Harry's defiance, and all the Go-Go's playfulness. Mix and bake at 350, then frost with a five-inch thick layer of The Icing of Originality, and you've got Lauren Marcus." Hailed as "fabulous" by The Boston Globe and a "powerhouse" by The Chicago Tribune, Lauren is a multi-hyphenate actor, singer, and writer whose work has been seen on stage and screen. She has appeared in countless regional theatrical productions, including Company (with Aaron Tveit; Amy), Fiddler on the Roof (Tzeitel), Hello, Dolly! (with Tovah Feldshuh; Ermengarde), two productions of Little Shop of Horrors (Audrey) and Merrily We Roll Along (Mary Flynn). She also was part of four world premieres, including Beatsville (Carla), Love in Hate Nation (Miss Asp), Pregnancy Pact (Jenn), and Punk Rock Girl! (Patricia). She also appeared in the Off-Broadway productions of Sarah Silverman's The Bedwetter (multiple roles) and White Girl in Danger (Meagan). Lauren was also part of Be More Chill's journey. She portrayed Brooke Lohst in the regional, off-Broadway, and Broadway productions. Lauren starred as Donna in the Netflix adaption of the Lin-Manuel Miranda-directed Tick, Tick…BOOM! Lauren also performed across New York City's famous music venues, including 54Below and Rockwood Music Hall, where she had multiple residencies and had a party of 12 performers on stage. While she considers her live shows – half-party/half-therapy, Lauren's sound is inspired by the effervescent melodies of 1960s pop, the lyrical poetry of 1970s troubadours, and the electric edge of contemporary indie rock…and usually includes a healthy dose of theatricality. Her sound is at once a throwback and entirely forward-thinking. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Lauren Marcus spoke about being part of Be More Chill's entire circle journey, pulling off a quick recovery on stage while performing in Company with the late Stephen Sondheim in attendance and her latest single: "Skinny & Blonde."

“Just One Voice” Michelle Willis has one of those voices that's so stirring, it makes you feel things you didn't know you felt. Actually, let's take that one step further: her voice makes you feel things you didn't even know you could feel in the first place. Yes, she's that good. The Canadian singer/songwriter and keyboardist decided to hit the 212 back in 2016, which really just means she moved to New York from Toronto and once she was there, it didn't take long for her to make her mark. She secured a monthly residency at the Rockwood Music Hall and just two months later she was touring in two bands led by David Crosby and one by Becca Stevens. Shortly after that, the ball that got rolling started rolling faster: She opened for Snarky Puppy and toured and recorded with the Zac Brown Band, Iggy Pop and Michael McDonald. Her sophomore album Just One Voice, which is the follow up to her 2016 debut See Us Through, is one of our favorite albums of the year. Soulfully precise and filled with smooth grooves, lustrous melodies and luxurious pop hooks, Just One Voice is a straight up knockout. www.michellewillis.ca Instagram: @boutwillismusic www.bombshellradio.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com
We had the pleasure of interviewing Michelle Willis' over Zoom video!Singer, songwriter and keyboard player Michelle Willis' sophomore record Just One Voice is out now on GroundUP Music. Featuring performances by David Crosby, Michael McDonald, Taylor Ashton, Grégoire Maret and Becca Stevens, the album is produced with Fab Dupont (Andre 3000, Gregory Porter). In celebration of the new release, Willis is debuting a new video for the single “How Come,” featuring vocals by Michael McDonald.. “How Come” comes on the heels of the album's previous singles, “Trigger,” “Green Grey” and “Liberty,” the latter featuring vocals from both David Crosby and McDonald. Just One Voice was written during the intensity of non-stop travel, penned from the cramped seats of buses, planes and countless green rooms. One night, out on the open road, Willis played the title track for Crosby, her mentor and bandmate, who urged, “No one else sounds like this. This is you. You have to make this record.” Shortly thereafter she was able to secure a prestigious grant from the Canada Council for the Arts which set the recording process in motion. Michelle Willis is a Canadian singer-songwriter and keyboard player based in Brooklyn. A Toronto native, she moved to New York in 2016 with few prospects, save for a monthly residency at Rockwood Music Hall. Within months she was touring in two bands led by David Crosby (David Crosby & Sky Trails and David Crosby & Lighthouse) and another by pop/jazz composer Becca Stevens and opening for jazz/funk collective Snarky Puppy across the globe. Willis has cemented her place as an in-demand keyboard player and singer, touring and recording with a diverse array of artists such as the aforementioned Crosby and Stevens as well as the Zac Brown Band, Iggy Pop, Laura Mvula and Michael McDonald. Just Once Voice follows her debut record, 2016's See Us Through. We want to hear from you! Indie Americana/Folk Artist Delaney Hafener reveals her musical journey. Her ethereal voice resonates in beautiful harmony with her music. Over the past decade, Delaney has covered tremendous ground in live performances, original music as well as touring with her band. Before she could speak, Delaney Hafener has found the best way for her to communicate is through music. She began singing Gram Parsons and Neil Young songs with her dad, and at the age of 12 started learning guitar with an old Gibson she revived from the basement. She wrote her first songs with the help and encouragement of her mom and began cutting her teeth as a performer at open mics when she was 14. Hafener founded the indie-folk band Pandafan at 17 and found some regional success with the group. Based mostly in NYC, they've played in venues such as Mercury Lounge, Cafe Lena, The Bug Jar, Gypsy Sally's Vinyl Lounge, Rockwood Music Hall, Suffolk Theater, and Guild Hall, and many others. At the height of their gigs, the young band was playing up to 5 gigs a week with frequent double-header Saturdays in the busy Long Island summer season. The Belle Curves' sound is akin to bands such as Brandi Carlile, The Wild Reeds, Lucinda Williams, and The Jayhawks. The Belle Curves is led by Delaney Hafener, formerly of indie-folk outfit Pandafan, and features a rotating cast of musicians. They have crafted a unique sound inspired by the many traditions of Americana, complementing introspective lyrics and a songwriting style that can be reminiscent of both the Laurel Canyon and Bakersfield. The Belle Curves' music touches on themes of self-doubt, progressive politics, identity, and disaffection, working to create a distinctly youthful folk aesthetic. A collection of protest music for this moment in American history, The Belle Curves' EP "2020" has been described as "absolutely brutal. If Dar Williams and Stephin Merritt started a Woody Guthrie inspired band, it would be something like The Belle Curves," according to Country Queer. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Based in NYC since 2011, Adam came to New York by way of Houston, TX where he completed his Master's Degree at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music (2008). Adam grew up in Northeast Ohio where he attended Cleveland State University (2006). Formally studying classical percussion throughout his education, Adam also actively performed as a freelancer on drum set. His classical background combined with his drum set skills gave him a unique set of skills that turned out to be very well-suited for working in musical theater. After playing its out-of-town tryout at Houston's Alley Theatre, Adam was offered the drum set chair on Frank Wildhorn's WONDERLAND when it transferred to Broadway (Spring 2011). With his foot in the door from his first Broadway show, Adam set about the work of subbing and building a reputation in and around the city. Subbing on shows as diverse as RENT, EVITA, MATILDA the Musical, AVE Q, CATS, HELLO DOLLY, ANASTASIA, THE PROM, and many more, Adam routinely demonstrates a wide-ranging versatility. A unique hybrid player, Adam is equally at home playing drum set and percussion and excels in situations that demand both contemporary drum set styles and legit classical/orchestral sensibilities. Adam's most recent NYC chairs include 2017's BANDSTAND on Broadway (TONY Nomination for Best Orchestrations and TONY WINNER for Best Choreography), Jerry Springer the Opera, and CLUELESS the Musical. When not in the theater, Adam is often found in NYC recording studios playing for singer/songwriters and composers like Desi Oakley, The Jack Mosbacher Band, Michael Mott, and David Mallamud, playing at cabaret spots like Feinstein's 54 Below, and downtown concert venues such as Rockwood Music Hall, Piano's, or The Bitter End. Episode 070: Teddy KumpelGood morning! This is Play It Like It’s Music. I’m Trevor, thanks for listening. On Wednesday, January 13 of 2020 music is not content. It’s connection.I said it last week and I’ll say it again: I’m going to put up an instrumental album on February 1st. It’s going well: I’m scared shitless and frustrated and sad a lot of the time but I guess those are signals that some vital work is taking place. I’m in it. We’ll see.Non-musicians look at us and think we must have such a charmed existence. So many times I hear folks say things along the lines of “ah you’re a musician, that must be so amazing and so nice and sweet and liberating” yadda yadda etcetera. Like we get to live without fear or any normal kind of life challenges. Or maybe that making music is a balm that somehow makes the loneliness just go away.Well let me tell you something: It’s great to be a musician and it’s an absolutely amazing process to make music. But it comes with great vulnerability. The volume of sheer fear and hopelessness that can sneak up on you at any moment will send you into spirals beyond imagining. The constant degradation of the value of our work in the marketplace will test our dignity in ways that make you want to set things on fire. For me, every day is a miracle. I look at how some people do it - which is dangerous because no two people can ever do it the same. But it’s easy to survey the landscape and conclude either that an easy life is just beyond reach, or that it’s hopeless to pursue it in the first place without first posessing untold truckloads of talent and charisma. In fact, neither are true.Music is the stuff of life, and if it is in fact your lot to live in contact with it in any way… as a maker or listener or dancer or feeler or producer or (god help you) artist’s representative, it’s always appropriate to throw open your arms to the sky and give thanks for this doorway into the infinite. It’s your choice and your chance to receive it. We open ourselves as it opens us. Which can sometimes feel unbearable, but stay in the game. Stay in it.I’m not going to say anything about the assault on the Capitol. Those shows are all out there, this is not one of them. I’m a bit miffed that last week’s episode (with Mai Bloomfield) got totally upstaged by the world cracking open, but creativity lives in the cracks, and we have cracks in abundance right now. All kinds of cracks. So crack open a cold one and settle in to enjoy some time with one of the greats. I’m a huge fan of the guy we’re talking to today, and maybe you are too. Or are about to be. Guy does things with a guitar that might be illegal in some states.Teddy Kumpel was born and raised in Port Jefferson, NY on Long Island, into a musical family. Teddy’s mom was a classical pianist and church organist. His father was a mathematics professor who enjoyed singing, playing piano and ukulele with The Great American Songbook. His family was always playing music together, which inspired Teddy to write his first song at 4 years old. At around the same time, he began playing baritone ukulele as well as playing any instrument his parents had lying around the house…violin, flute, piano, organ and guitar. After Teddy attended the University of Miami, Teddy spent some time on the road with Rare Silk and in New York City (between tours) to study with guitar legends Steve Khan, Dean Brown and Mick Goodrick. He’s spent a lot of time in the trenches, toughing it out with the rest of the NY musicians doing whatever he could to get by. Teddy’s always had a passion for making his own music, and he’s also worked on developing artists with major labels starting in the 90’s and continuing to this day. In 2008 Teddy was creating a funk band with two guitar players, but couldn’t find another guitar player who was happy just playing rhythm guitar. Around this time, the first multi-track looping pedal came out and Teddy spent a couple of years figuring out how to loop with a live trio. This created, LOOPestra which played over 300 gigs at a Monday midnight residence at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC between 2011 and 2018. Those Monday LOOPestra live performances became a NYC institution and community building experience. Full disclosure: I’ve seen a few dozen of those (at least) and I also played on two of them. And oh yeah, Teddy also toured with Joe Jackson between 2015 – 2019. Guy’s got stories for days, we get into a lot of that lineage and plenty else. Good laughs too.Quick ask: if you believe this show deserves a wider audience, please tell a friend:Without further ado, here’s Teddy. “Tamara Hey's soaring voice has charmed and captivated audiences throughout her native New York for over a decade. She writes meticulously detailed, magically crystallized three-minute pop songs which, just like her vocals, are disarmingly deep. She's also one of the great wits in music: an edgy sense of humor spices Hey's narratives and character studies, even in the gloomiest moments. And her punchlines have O. Henry irony and Amy Rigby bittersweetness. The title of Hey's album Miserably Happy pretty much says it all.” – New York Music DailyShe also happens to be the rare music-schooled musician who doesn't waste notes or let her chops get in the way of saying something as directly as possible, musically or lyrically. That sense of purpose and craftsmanship translates to her career as a music educator: she's a popular guitar teacher and for the past ten years, Hey's Alphabet City Music Workshops for music theory, transcription and arranging have built a following, especially among singer-songwriters.Hey got her start in the Lower East Side's edgy singer-songwriter scene in the early part of this century, in the days before the gritty, artistic neighborhood was taken over by real estate speculators. Inspired by the fearlessness and sardonic humor of classic punk, the catchiness and wit of 60s Brill Building pop and the quirky fun of new wave, Hey quickly gained a following in bars and listening rooms in New York including the Fast Folk Cafe, CB's Gallery, the Bottom Line, Rockwood Music Hall and the Slipper Room. She's shared the stage with artists including David Massengill, Jack Hardy, Ellis Paul, to name a few.Her third album, Miserably Happy, has been called a high water mark of that scene. Tamara's catalog of original songwriting includes three previous albums: Right This Minute, A Little Space Left, and a children's album, Sharing the Same Stars. In addition, Tamara's work appears on three Fast Folk Magazine compilations: Local Charm, New Voices NYC, and Rebirth, issued on Smithsonian Folkways Records. The EditorsNew York Music Daily/Lucid CultureReview of Tamara Hey at Rockwood Music Hallhttp://lucidculture.wordpress.com

The goats brought in to clean up Riverside Park are taking a summer vacation! The original flock brought to the park in May was narrowed down from 24 to 18 after they cleaned out the weeds too quickly, and now the group will be meeting back up at their farm in Rhinebeck, NY while the weeds are allowed to regrow a bit on the steep slopes of Riverside Park that they were maintaining. As part of their going-away party, the Riverside Park Conservancy honored Massey the goat with an award for receiving the most votes in an online contest. The 166-pound, 10-year-old goat is the oldest of the bunch and received a bouquet of edible flowers as a prize. Watch for the goats to return later in the summer when they will be back for a second round of snacking on the invasive plants that will further weaken them and ensure they don't have the energy left to regrow again. In July, one day before the anniversary of Eric Garner's death, the Department of Justice, now overseen by Trump-appointed Attorney General William Barr, announced that they will not pursue civil rights charges against officer Pantaleo, who was seen in video putting Garner in a chokehold. Immediately after, the NYPD was quick to point out that their own internal disciplinary case against Pantaleo was still underway, and on August 2nd, an NYPD judge ruled that the officer should be fired due to his use of a chokehold when attempting to arrest Eric Garner, a tactic that is prohibited by NYPD policy and was listed by the city medical examiner as a contributing factor in Garner's death. Although the ruling is preliminary, Pantaleo was suspended effective immediately, after being kept employed in administrative duty during the five years since Eric Garner's death. The announcement came days after de Blasio was heckled by protesters demanding he fire Pantaleo during the second Democratic Presidential primary debates in Detroit. In response, he continued to claim that justice would be served in the next 30 days. Fellow Democratic candidate Kirsten Gillibrand had a more decisive answer. nn De Blasio has been polling between 0% and 1% among likely voters. nn The NYPD judge's decision will now make its way to NYPD Commissioner O'Neill, who will decide whether to fire Pantaleo in the upcoming weeks. City Council Speaker Corey Johnson released a statement saying: This decision is long overdue. It should not have taken five years to determine what the public clearly understood in five minutes: Officer Pantaleo used an illegal chokehold on Eric Garner, which ultimately led to his death. nn Now Police Commissioner O'Neill must act. Pantaleo must be fired immediately. Nothing will bring back Mr. Garner, but I hope this decision gives the Garner family some peace 15 years ago on August 3, 2004 — The pedestal of the Statue of Liberty reopens for the first time since the September 11th attacks You may not think of the city as harboring invasive insects, but arborists from the national Department of Agriculture have been inspecting trees in Brooklyn and Queens for Asian longhorn beetles. The beetles are thought to have originally traveled to the United States in 1996 in wooden shipping pallets, and now they threaten trees across the city. Inspectors search for the telltale signs of round holes in the wood of a tree, where the adult beetles emerge in late July. nn Keep an eye out for the signs of beetle infestation on your local trees: They create deep round holes big enough for a pencil to fit in and leave a collection of sawdust below the holes. The beetles themselves are about one and a half inches long, mostly black with white specks, and have distinctive blue stripes on their legs and long striped antennae. If you find a tree or piece of wood that may be infested, call the Asian longhorned beetle tip line at 1-866-702-9938 or email foresthealth@dec.ny.gov. 9 years ago on August 9, 2010 — Upon landing at JFK, a JetBlue flight attendant announces that he is quitting his job and exits the jet via the emergency evacuation slide, taking two beers with him 42 years ago on August 10, 1977 — David Berkowitz is taken into custody 3 years ago on August 10, 2016 — A man partially climbs Trump Tower And finally, thanks go out to Eric Boyo, an MTA subway operator for 27 years who stopped his train to help a woman on the tracks this week. As he approached Fulton Street on the G Train line, he noticed people on the platform waving their arms. Seeing that something must be wrong, he slowed his train early and then spotted a woman on the tracks. He stopped the train and opened the door at the front of the train to speak with the woman, and ended up helping her back onto the platform. Whether the woman intended to be struck by the train or had just fallen was unclear, but onlookers praised Eric for remaining calm and showing compassion during the rescue. According to the MTA, the recommended way to flag down an oncoming train during an emergency situation is to light your cellphone's flashlight and wave it side to side while facing the train. Hudson Yards may be New York's newest neighborhood, but it has already risen to the #2 spot on PropertyShark's list of the city's most expensive neighborhoods Way back in Episode 7, we talked about the proposal for a public beach in Manhattan, and this week, the Hudson River Park Trust revealed some renderings of what the park and beach may look like 231 years ago on July 26, 1788 — New York becomes the 11th state to join the United States of America This week, the city Department of Health detected mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus within the NYC area. July begins the active season for West Nile infections, which are spread via mosquito bites, and no human cases of West Nile have been detected yet, so now is the time to be prepared and protect yourself from mosquitoes if you will be outside. Wear clothing that covers your skin, use a mosquito repellent containing the chemical repellents DEET or Picaridin, or use a natural repellent containing oil of lemon eucalyptus. Be sure to seal around your window air conditioners so that mosquitoes won't have an easy entrance into your home, and use window screens if you'll be leaving windows open. If you'll be traveling overseas, take special precaution to avoid mosquito bites, and consider a vaccination against diseases that are common in the areas where you will be traveling. If you're staying in the city, you can even do your part by calling 311 to report standing water, defined as a place on public or private property where water gathers and remains for more than five days, creating a habitat where mosquitoes may breed. 102 years ago on July 28, 1917 — 10,000 people march in the Silent Parade down Fifth Avenue to protest recent violence and riots aimed at Blacks in the South — Learn more about the Silent Parade from the Bowery Boys. 3 years ago on August 2, 2016 — Karina Vetrano is attacked and murdered while jogging in Spring Creek Park in Howard Beach, Queens 74 years ago on July 28, 1945 — A U.S. Army B-25 bomber hits the Empire State Building, killing the three crew members and 11 people in the building 43 years ago on July 29, 1976 — David Berkowitz shoots two young women in the Bronx, beginning the Son of Sam murders that would keep NYC on edge for the next year 103 years ago on July 30, 1916 — The Black Tom explosion near Jersey City levels buildings, kills four, and injures hundreds — Read more from the FBI's history of the explosion 48 years ago on August 1, 1971 — George Harrison and Ravi Shankar organize the Concert for Bangladesh at Madison Square Garden The Straphangers Campaign and TransitCenter had some distinguished awards to hand out to two of the city's bus lines this week: In Manhattan, the M14A, which runs from the Lower East Side to Chelsea along 14th Street, received the award for slowest bus line, achieving an average speed of just 4.3mph. When it comes to reliability, Brooklyn's B15 comes in last place, leaving bus riders wondering when or if the next bus would arrive. The slowest buses in Queens and Staten Island are leaving the other boroughs in the dust, racing down city streets at 6.4 and 7.8 mph respectively. Unfortunately those job approval numbers have only gotten worse, sinking down with each survey until he reached a 42% approval when Quinnipiac last asked the question in an April 2019 poll. Moving the Fourth of July fireworks back to the Brooklyn Bridge for the first time since 2014 went off without any problems, although it did leave a few flames burning on the bridge after the fireworks were finished. It seemed to be the smoldering remains of the fireworks casings or leftover chemicals and not the infrastructure of the bridge itself. The FDNY fireboats stationed in the East River made quick work of the flames, holding back from using the full force of their water cannons so as not to damage the bridge. This was the 43rd annual Macy's fireworks display.
