I can't think of a better way to end season 4 and the never before heard conversations from my archive, than my conversation between friends, Zadie Smith and Devonté Hynes. I'd been badgering Zadie for a while to let me interview her and when she agreed, the day before our conversation was scheduled, she emailed to ask if she could bring her friend Dev? I of course said yes, scrambled to find another microphone and when we had a last minute cancellation of the recording venue, we had to do it at my house. And the room with the best soundproofing, my bedroom! We talk about how we're all storytellers; about music; about the power of live music; about the myth of the 10,000 hours; about Prince; about whether we should define ourselves as 'artists'; about authenticity and consciousness; about knowing and unknowing and about being students forever. I've produced almost 60 podcast episodes and this is one of my favourites. Because, for me, there is nothing more fulfilling than sitting around with creative people talking about music and making and process - it's why this podcast exists. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.Guests: Zadie Smith & Devonté HynesTitle: I would never call myself an artistMusic: Lil Nas X, Industry Baby; Arctic Monkeys, There'd Better Be a Mirrorball; Maggie Rogers, That's Where I Am; Knucks, Alpha HouseLinksDevonté Hynes IG and WebsiteZadie Smith WebsiteZadie interview on latest book, The Fraud - BBC Sounds, This Cultural LifeFind out ways to support the Israel-Palestine project click herePodcast WebsitePodcast IG Hosted on Acast. In this episode, we talk with Colorado's Holly Lovell as she was enjoying some off time with her family in New Zealand. We visit about how she developed her vocal chops, seasons or writing and making what you're capable of in the moment as to not stifle your creativity. Indie folk singer/songwriter Holly Lovell released her album Hello Chelsea to the world on February 7, 2025. The album was produced in Eau Claire, WI with Brian Joseph (Bon Iver). Holly Lovell, crafts songs that capture aching intimacy and vulnerability through perceptive storytelling. Using a mix of both acoustic and electric guitar, Lovell's alternative folk style songs are delivered with strong melodies and spirited conviction. She has been influenced by the lyrical prowess of artists such as Patty Griffin, Brandi Carlile and Bruce Springsteen. Lovell's vocals have been likened to both Maggie Rogers and Ingrid Michaelson ‘but with far more gumption.' says The Denver Post, ‘She understands her songs and the power behind the lyrics. It's personal for her, for her band and every person that listens.' In this final installment of my talk with Allegra Goodman, author of the newly released novel, “Isola,” a historical novel about a young French woman purposefully marooned on an island off the coast of Quebec inspired by true 16th century events, we find out what's currently brewing for Allegra and what she knows at this moment about where her personal through line is leading her next, as well as what kinds of things she's been reading, watching, and listening to lately. We talked about: - The nonfiction book she currently stayed up too late reading - An amazing story about how her mother stood up for herself in the 1970s–and how that example inspires Allegra to this day - A sneak peek at her next book, which is currently in the copy editing phase - Her dreams for her work in the next ten years (super inspiring!) - The historical novel she carried around with her so she could read whenever she had a few quiet minutes - The very specific snack that keeps her going - The Maggie Rogers song that she feels captures the essence of Isola Connect with Allegra on Instagram @allegragoodmanwriter.

It's not uncommon for big musical artists to take a break in between albums, but it is uncommon for them to use that break to go to Harvard Divinity School. That's exactly what Maggie Rogers did a few years ago at the height of her success. She sits down with Tom Power to talk about that decision, how she applied her theological studies to her work as a singer-songwriter, and how trusting her instincts and prioritizing fun on her latest album, “Don't Forget Me,” changed her approach to songwriting.

Parisian pop stylists L’Impératrice took a very French approach to making their album Pulsar: “We really take time to make things good” said the group's founder, Charles de Boisseguin, with a smile. Taking this time to make sure that every decision in this set of songs captured their spirit both onstage and off really shows. Pulsar is also their first to feature guest vocalists including Maggie Rogers, Erick the Architect, and on “Danza Marilù” — an anthem for women of all ages to move freely on the dancefloor — the voice of Neapolitan singer Fabiana Martone.
