Science Saru are responsible for some of the most creative and visually appealing anime in the medium, often working with talented directors and a global staff to bring these works to life. Ionatan and Ravi discuss the studio's founding by Masaaki Yuasa and Eunyoung Choi as well as the direction it has taken in the years since then. Then, they pick their top five Science Saru anime, from personally impactful works like 'The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl' and 'Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!' to more recent outings like 'Dandadan' and 'The Colors Within.'
Yes, the world may be on fire and/or a frigid wasteland at the same time, but we're still here and still kicking. And to prove that there is still some good in the world (along with football YouTuber Tom Grossi raising over a million dollars for charity in one week) there's a very long-awaited announcement: NO. 6 IS GETTING A NEW NOVEL. Let's hope that the reunion will, indeed, be coming for those boys. And along with that, we have the news of BOCCHI THE SECOND SEASON happening, Masaaki Yuasa starting up a new studio, an hour's worth of book announcements from several publishers (even from Tokyopop, but just briefly), Fate/stay night airing on a... *curious* cable TV channel, some ripples in the Gundam pipeline, the recent AnimEigo "town hall" announcements, and a whole lot of dumb shenanigans to help distract all of you from the real world at large. And if all else fails, just wait for the Canada gooses to begin their attack. They'll never see it coming. intro - winter's almost over 8:45 - main stories 48:15 - book announcements 1:44:30 - announcements and updates 2:15:04 - home video releases 8:45 - Masaaki Yuasa establishes a new studio 13:11 - Kadokawa builds their empire further 15:37 - The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't a Guy at All anime announced 19:24 - BOCCHI THE SECOND SEASON 22:40 - No. 6 gets a new novel after 14 years 24:47 - My Dress-Up Darling ends in its next chapter 29:41 - the Zombie Land Saga movie still lives 33:04 - a new live-action Gundam film project announced 41:35 - a new Avatar sequel series greenlit at Nickelodeon 48:15 - Kodansha USA book announcements 59:33 - Seven Seas book announcements 1:16:34 - sadly, Tokyopop has more BL titles 1:20:20 - Yen Press book announcements 1:36:33 - Viz licenses the Kingdom manga 1:44:30 - so, about Fate/stay night UBW on television… 1:49:51 - J Balvin guest starring in Solo Leveling 1:55:11 - GKIDS releasing LOVE & POP (Hideaki Anno) in theaters 1:56:29 - BOCCHI THE ROCK! recap movies and more Touken Ranbu now on Crunchyroll 2:00:21 - Disney backlog dubs hitting Hulu in March (The Fable, Tokyo Revengers, Murai In Love) 2:01:40 - Samurai Pizza Cats: The Video Game is a real thing coming in 2026 2:06:06 - Vampire Hunter D coming to theaters in April 2:06:49 - the recent AnimEigo “town hall” announcements 2:15:04 - misc. home video releases (WB, Anime Limited, AnimEigo, Aniplex) 2:18:04 - GKIDS/Shout Studios releases (Summer Wars, APFTTU, Wolf Children) 2:19:24 - Sentai May releases (Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night, Insomniacs After School) 2:22:17 - Crunchyroll May releases (Iruma-kun, One Piece) Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.

Ionatan and Ravi dive deep into the anime adaptations of two works by Taiyo Matsumoto: 'Tekkonkinkreet' and 'Ping Pong the Animation.' They discuss Matsumoto's career as a mangaka, including the broad range of topics he covers and how he crafts narratives that are simultaneously grounded in reality and remarkably imaginative. Then, they explore the themes and characters in two of his most well known stories through the lens of the movie directed by Michael Arias and the series directed by Masaaki Yuasa.

From the brilliantly deranged mind of Go Nagai in 1972 to the brilliantly deranged visuals of Masaaki Yuasa in 2018, Devilman Crybaby is one 'Hell' of an accomplishment. In the eighteenth episode of Season 10: Dealer's Choice, Kyle is joined for a one-on-one conversation with artist Anna Cullado to discuss the surrealist rabbit hole of night encounters, youthful indulgence, and plenty of drinks in Masaaki Yuasa's adaptation of Tomihiko Morimi's novel that contemplates the flexibility of time, the difference between choice and fate. and the deconstruction of the romantic comedy in The Night is Short, Walk on Girl (2017).
While I didn't discover director, screenwriter, and animator Masaaki Yuasa until the release of 2021's Inu-Oh, and fell in love with it's art, animation and story,I'm so glad Shout Studios made it easy to go back and catch up on his past works with the Masaaki Yuasa: Five Films set. Fans will love having this on their shelf while newcomers get to see why Yuasa and his films are so treasured.
What makes for a particularly compelling anime movie? Ionatan and Ravi discuss how they approach critically watching films compared to television series before giving their personal recommendations for the best standalone movies that the medium has to offer. They cover a pair of Satoshi Kon works in 'Tokyo Godfathers' and 'Perfect Blue,' Mamoru Hosoda's heartfelt story of parenthood in 'Wolf Children,' and Masaaki Yuasa's take on a Tomihiko Morimi novel in 'The Night is Short, Walk on Girl' among various other picks.
The last physical media show of 2023 is here just in time to get your last minute Christmas gifts. They include some wonderful stuff for families including one of the great short films of all time, the animation of Masaaki Yuasa and Shaun the Sheep plus one of the best versions of Pinocchio. One of Spike Lee's early films gets the 4K upgrade as does films from Walter Hill, David Cronenberg and arguably the best of John Woo's American resume. Peter Sobczynski and Erik Childress look at the end of the ‘80s 3-D era, a trio of horror titles throughout the decades and a remote-dropper musical. They also look at a trio of mysteries including an ‘80s cult classic, Peter Falk in all his complete ‘70s glory and the ultimate one from the ‘60s brought to vivid life by Oliver Stone in the ‘90s that is one of the must-owns to end out the year. 0:00 - Intro 1:08 – Criterion (The Red Balloon, Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio 4K) 10:06 - Warner Archive(The Great Ziegfeld) 13:53 – Sony (School Daze 4K) 17:12 – VCI (Horrors of the Black Museum) 23:52 - Film Masters (The Terror 60th Anniversary) 29:55 – Kino (House of the Long Shadows, The Man Who Wasn't There, Running Scared, Suspect Zero 4K, Columbo: The Complete Series, Face/Off 4K) 1:01:56 – Arrow (Savage Guns/The Warriors) 1:09:25 – Shout Factory (Last Man Standing, The Dead Zone 4K, Clue 4K, Shaun the Sheep Complete Series, Masaaki Yuasa: Five Films, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story 4K, JFK 4K) 1:52:31 – Recent Theatrical Releases 2:06:50 - Outro

In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing THE NIGHT IS SHORT, WALK ON GIRL (2017) which is currently streaming on HBO Max. The film is directed by Masaaki Yuasa, with a screenplay by Makoto Ueda and based on the novel by Tomihiko Morimi. The story follows the Black-haired Girl, as she over the course of an evening, has an adventurous night meeting new people, indulging in libations and has given herself over to fate and allows herself to be lead where the day takes her. Adult themes make this film more targeted to mature audiences but its a wild, enjoyable, trippy ride. The film is rated PG-13 and clocks in at 1 h 32 m. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Recently I've been thinking a lot about the things that divide up an anime episode, be it an OP or short intertitles - and so I decided to make a whole episode about them! In this edition of Get In The Mecha, I talk about how these dividing mechanisms make all the difference to how an episode / film feels and ask the question of what is so important about structure. This is the last episode of 2022! I want to get the podcast back on track next year so bear with me a little longer. Thanks for all your support, feedback and attention this year! Tatami Time Machine Blues dropped last week on Hulu, and being big fans of Tatami Galaxy we were naturally pretty excited to cover it. Shingo Natsume took over the helm from Masaaki Yuasa for this series so we're pretty curious about how this new entry to the universe stacks up. Does if feel like the original? Are we happy with the direction the story took? Can you watch it without having seen the original? We'll let you know here! We're also talking the future of HiDive as a streaming platform, and discussing whether it is worth the subscription cost/what you get that you can't find anywhere else. Lastly we have some rapid fire hot takes on a variety of topics pertaining to this season, we're talking everything from Spy Family to the World Cup in a segment we call Quick Hitters. We're covering a lot of ground on this week's episode so buckle up nerds. Firstly we've got a very special certified RWBY expert joining us today, she's probably familiar if you're a long time listener, to see how RWBY Ice Queendom may or may not be living up to expectations of the fanbase. From there we're making the case for Made in Abyss does it deserve classic status? Is it goated? We think it's got a fighting chance, but we'll let you decide. And for our biggest segment this wee we're bringing you our review of Masaaki Yuasa's new work Inu-Oh. It's billed as a psychedelic hair metal story about feudal japan, and we're here to tell you why you should absolutely jump at the first chance you have to see it either streaming or in theaters. And for our last week's one big thing we have some interesting Kaguya sightings, and a look into an alternate Sailor Moon that maybe never should have been and thankfully wasn't.

On this episode, Cat and Joe discuss and review Masaaki Yuasa's mind boggling directorial debut, Mind Game. This wildly experimental film mixes a variety of animation styles, and even throws in some live action. Since its release in 2004 it has developed a cult following, and has a whopping 100% on Rotten Tomatoes! In Yuasa's own words, "Instead of telling it serious and straight, I went for a look that was a bit wild and patchy. I think that Japanese animation fans today don't necessarily demand something that's so polished. You can throw different styles at them and they can still usually enjoy it."
On this episode Cat and Joe discuss, review, and describe their frequent shock at how incredibly bonkers this movie is. This bubbly film by Masaaki Yuasa explores the ways in which a young woman deals with grief, horrific loss, and moving on, with a quirky surfing-meets-firefighting rom com twist. Joe describes this episode as his favorite episode the team has recorded for the pod so far.
This week's episode is a unique one. During the MaxFunDrive we had a stretch goal that stated that if we reached 250 new and upgrading members, one lucky member would get to choose the movie we discuss on an episode. Since we reached our stretch goal, we randomly selected a member, and that person turned out to be the wonderful Merrell! The movie they chose for us to discuss is 2004's Mind Game. And boy is it a trip! We also answer a question from our hotline about bad movie accents. And, as always, we've got ‘Staff Picks.'In news, Julie Delpy is fed up, Steven Spielberg makes a deal with Netflix, and Vin Diesel takes credit for Dwayne Johnson's Fast and Furious performances.Staff Picks:Ify – Summer WarsDrea – Have a Nice DayAlonso – P.S.
