AT THE NADIR OF WINTER, the time of deepest cold and lowest natural activity, the sound of the resonant percussion family of instruments takes on an uncanny appeal. The metallophones—bells, bowls, gongs, chimes, and cymbals—speak eloquently in the chilled, quiet air. Bells have been with us for over four thousand years. Besides everyday functions like sounding the time, they've played an essential role in religious ceremonies around the world. For hundreds of years, Christian churches used them for both. More recently, metallic and quartz crystal bells, bowls, and gongs have become central to Sound Healing and group meditation practices, as well as personal rituals. Simple, relatively inexpensive, powerful tools for creating sacred space, bells are adapting to the changes in religion and personal spirituality. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a meditative journey for resonant percussion, on a program called WINTERTONES 3. Music is by SHAWN FEENEY, SCOTT LAWLOR, TRYSHE DHEVNEY, 33 BOWLS, and featuring veteran San Francisco bell ringer KARMA MOFFETT. The subtle, melodic rhythms of the PANArt "hang" — arguably the first new musical instrument of the 21st century. It's a descendant of the steel pan drum, the product of Swiss craftsmanship and perfectionism. And in the hands of a musician with the right sensibility, it's a vehicle for innerspace travel. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, summer spacemusic for the hang and some of its siblings in the resonant percussion family, on a program called "CEREMONY." Music is by JAMES HOOD, LAURA INSERRA & DARREN GIBBS, CHRISTOPHER OF THE WOLVES, TRYSHE DHEVNEY, and RAVID GOLDSCHMIDT. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

What if one sound -- one simple focused sound that any of us could make with our voice -- could alter a moment or change the molecular structure of a cell? Please join me, The Unstoppable Frankie Picasso this week when I am joined by my guest Tryshe Dhevney, a woman with an incredible tale of self discovery and remarkable healing. Ten years ago, doctors told Tryshe that she would most likely die within a month from the hepatitis C and cirrhosis of the liver that they no longer could treat. Tryshe, an actor by training, found her voice and started using it more as solace, but then as her health improved, as a means of healing. Indeed, sound saved her. Today, ten years after leaving mystified doctors in her wake, Tryshe is teaching others how to use sound to heal from physical, emotional and spiritual diseases and imbalances, something she now calls SOUNDShifting. In her SOUNDShifting workshops and seminars, people learn to use their voice to create “sound” health, to recognize what their voice is saying about them, to return their body and mind to their natural rhythm and frequency.
