This week we are joined by Walt Drennan, host of The Ask Me About My Type 1 Podcast and rider from the documentary, Bike Beyond, a film that follows 20 people with Type 1 diabetes as they journey across the country dismantling stereotypes and raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for Type 1 diabetes cure research. Walt shares his experience living with Type 1, the several different types of diabetes, the events that led to his diagnosis, what biking across the country (multiple times) taught him, the accessibility (and lack thereof) of insulin, and other necessities for people with diabetes, how the global pandemic has affected this community, and Walt opens up about a life-threatening experience he had recently. We also discuss ableism and what people without disabilities can do to best support people with disabilities. This episode is jam-packed with insight that we can all learn from. Check it out! Ask Me About My Type 1 is back for Season 2 Dia-Peoples!! It's been a long summer but I'm your host, Walt Drennan, and do I have a season premiere for you!! It's back to school season here at Ask Me About My Type 1 and in order to celebrate I thought there couldn't be anyone better to hear from than a Type 1 actually starting their first year of college. I invite on Type 1 guest Destin and her Type None roommate Bella who are both starting their freshman year of college TODAY!! Like literally they start classes today. Bella asks some big questions that get us talking about insulin pricing and health insurance practices (SPOILERS: Destin and I both hate them), Destin tells us about this really weird sounding melon diet she's thinking of starting that might cure her Type 1 (it won't), and I realize just how very old I am when I give Destin some outdated Type 1 college advice. The bell for the start of Season 2 is about to ring so grab your books and find a good seat because Ask Me About My Type 1 Season 2 is now officially in session!! For more information on how you or your Type 1 student can make things a little easier for themselves at school check out the resources at Beyond Type 1 here https://beyondtype1.org/school/ . This summer, 20 people with type 1 diabetes will make an incredible journey. From June 3 to August 11, Team Bike Beyond is crossing the USA, cycling from New York to California. This week, meet the man who asked Beyond Type 1 to take a chance on the event, and the woman who said yes. Stacey talks with cyclist Walt Drennan and Beyond Type 1 CEO Sarah Lucas about how the idea for the trip came about, the work that went into launching the ride and what they hope to accomplish along the way. Each week during Bike Beyond, Diabetes Connections will bring you stories from the ride and profile a different cyclist. They're not professionals, just people with type 1 who wanted to take an extraordinary challenge. (There are actually 20 riders and one D-Mom along on this journey). Stacey also shares a bit about the end of the school year & how the first year of middle school went for her son. Plus, we talk about the summer diabetes conferences on the calendar like ADA, Friends for Life & AADE. Get the app and listen to Diabetes Connections wherever you go!
