**TRIGGER WARNING** Eating Disorders This week on the podcast I discuss the topic of Eating Disorder and Diabulimia with my new friends Edie and Ronan. Edie is our Type 1 this week and was recently made an ambassador for the Eating Disorders Association of Northern Ireland before realizing she had gone through Diabulimia as a teenager while attending boarding school. Ronan is Edie's Partner and our Type None for this conversation and was there during Edie's realization of her experience with Diabulimia. Ronana tells us about the perspective he gained on his own mental health through helping Edie through hers. It's a serious episode for sure but a hopeful one nonetheless. Oh hey Type 1s and Nones! Diabetes Awareness Month might be over but that doesn't mean there aren't still more Diabetes conversations to be had. And this week on Ask Me About My Type 1 we're busting the oldest of Type 1 Myths because it's about time someone did (again)! We're talking about the old betes adage, "You can do anything with Diabetes!". And to help me talk about how true this statement IS NOT, I have with me Abbie and Anna. Abbie is our Type 1 guest for a second time this month and tells us more about how Type 1 kept her from the career in music that she had grown up dreaming of. In the Type None seat this week is Abbie's friend from college Anna who joins us as an artist currently pursuing a career in music to tell us the truth about how difficult it is to make it in the music industry even when you don't have Type 1. ANOTHER EPISODE?!?!? That's right Type 1ers and Noners. Ask Me About My Type 1 is here for the second time in just as many days and we're going to the movies!!! This week is all about the very bad and kinda of good but mostly bad portrayals of Diabetes in tv and film. And to talk with me about the not good, the bad, and the really really ugly of Diabetes tv and film I have on Kelsey and Lucy, writers and actresses themselves who are doing their part to cure the industry of their terrible Diabetes portrayals. Kelsey has written a feature comedy script inspired by her life with Type 1 and friend of the show Lucy, a Type None guest from all the way back in Season 1, comes back to sit in the Type None seat again because she's currently developing a tv series where she hopes to play a Type 1 character based on her experiences growing up with her Type 1 sister Maggie. National Diabetes Awareness Month is winding down but before it ends I wanted to feature another community within our own Diabetes community and as you might have guessed it's the Queer Type 1 Community! To do that this week I have on Greta and Amrei to discuss how Type 1 and Queer identity can intersect, the parallels between the two experiences, and the importance of language when talking about them. No, I didn't post two different pictures of the same person! And no, this episode isn't an ad for the incredibly outdated and not at all relevant enough for a joke Doublemint Gum company! Today's guests are Shelby and Sydney; the Payne Twins! And while the two are in fact identical twins, Shelby was diagnosed with Type 1 and Sydney wasn't. But despite this, the two still learned how to manage Shelby's Type 1 and are now at a point where Shelby trusts Sydney with just about any part of her Type 1 management. In our conversation the two tell us how they helped each other manage Shelby's Type 1 while attending Type 1 camp together, as teammates on highly competitive youth soccer teams that played internationally, and also attending med school. This week on everyone's favorite Q & A podcast all about Type 1, I host a very special Type NONE guest, Delanie Fischer!!! For those who may not know, Delanie is one of the hosts of my favorite health, wellness, and comedy themed podcast Self-Helpless. Delanie has no knowledge of or connection to Type 1 so I called up friend of the show Jennifer Bartels from season 2 episode 2 and sat down with Delanie to answer all of her burning Type 1 Q's. This episode, and what I hope to be many more to come, is my effort to be more strategic about my awareness spreading by reaching out to the Type Nones that really should know more about what living with Type 1 actually means. And Delanie being the professional self-help pod-caster and question asker that she is seemed like the perfect Type None to start it all off with. As you'll hear, Delanie was an absolute dream Type None guest and the questions she brought really made me look at aspects of my Type 1 experience that I hadn't thought of in years. It’s a kind of anxiety that the Type 1 community has literally never had to go through to date so I felt the need to reach out and ask for help from someone who gets not just the Type 1 of it all but the COVID of it all too. Enter Dr, Hannah Hamlin, a medical resident who JUST SO HAPPENS to live with and manage her own Type 1 like many of us. In this special episode, I ask Hannah all my burning and anxiety-induced COVID questions and get all the REAL Type 1 answers with a medical degree to back them up. So wash those hands and maintain an appropriate social distance while we all listen as Hannah breaks COVID down for the Type 1 crowd. This special episode of @askmeaboutmytype1 is now live everywhere you listen to podcasts. Type 1 guest Rohan and Type None guest Max tell me how they came together to address Type 1 concerns through dietary supplementation. And no it's not (JUST) an episode about cinnamon!! It's a story about what can happen when the powers of Type 1 and a Type None with a medical engineering degree and a passion for supplements combine!! Max tells of his learning about Type 1 through Rohan's Type 1 experience and Rohan tells of his rediscovery of the Type 1 community. I also get the rundown about Cinnamon and the TRUTH behind the myth!! As National Diabetes Awareness Month comes to a close and with Turkey day fast approaching, I couldn't think of an episode topic that could both help focus all your built-up Type 1y awareness-spreading energy AND prepare you for a conversation that will most certainly tick off uncle Bob and at least half of your Grandparents BETTER than this one!! It's all about Politics on Ask Me About My Type 1 this week, Dia-Citizens of voting age!! It's one of the tabooiest of subjects but one that has profound effects on the way we as Type 1s take care of ourselves in the United States. That's why I wrote to my representative in the Pennsylvania House, Sara Innamorato, and asked her to be my Type None guest for this week in Type 1 Politics!! I have on Type 1 guest Tracey from the local T1Yinzer group and together we tell Sara all about living with Type 1 in South West PA. Sara asks about our experiences navigating the American Health Care system as Type 1s, our opinions on Pennsylvania's recent legislative response to the opioid epidemic, and also leaves us with some helpful tips on how to take our Type 1 activism to the NEXT level. It's time to politick everyone so grab your voter registration card and take notes because Ask Me About My Type 1 is live and streaming!! As we approach the halfway point of National Diabetes Awareness Month, I wanted this episode to focus on a huge part of why we have this month in the first place: SUPPORT!! Yes, advocacy involves a lot of fundraising and those dollars are important but awareness spreading is also about helping the Type Nones in our lives be there in the ways that we need most. But on the other side, Type None life isn't easy either and they can also use very specific support that is difficult to identify let alone find. And to talk about exactly that I have on Type 1 famous person, Molly of "Hugging the Cactus" blog fame and her best Type None friend from college Emma. This week we explore all the ways that Type 1s AND Type Nones need support. So grab your favorite buddy, functioning pancreas or not, and listen in as we discuss the ways all of us navigate the world whether we're living with type 1 OR caring for someone who does and the support that can help make that easier. Oh Hi Type 1s and Nones!! We're in the middle of National Diabetes Awareness Month and today's episode couldn't have been more perfect to celebrate the occasion!! I have on Type 1 guest Ekram and Type 1 guest and Ekram's husband, Jesse and we get into what I think to be the very core of what this month of awareness is all about. Ekram tells us her story of being diagnosed after her older sister had already been diagnosed with Type 1 years earlier. But despite this familiarity with the condition, Ekram still found Type 1 to be a tough road to navigate because there's knowing about Type 1 and then there's KNOWING Type 1. Jesse tells us of a very memorable low that he helped Ekram get through and shows us the many different ways that Type Nones can be there for the Type 1s in their lives. I also introduce my VERY challenging plan to finish out this National Diabetes Awareness Month so cozy up in your favorite podcast-listening chair and listen up to the newest episode of Ask Me About My Type 1!! Oh hi! I'm back from fall break and SO ready to give you the A's to all your Q's!! And just in time for the first Monday of National Diabetes Awareness Month. In honor of said Type 1 themed month, I have for you a family episode of Ask Me About My Type 1. Much like Type 1, Family is always there, they can be kind of annoying sometimes, and there is no cure. The typical Type 1 story is that of parents or siblings learning to support their Type 1 who is still and child and under their constant care. But what happens when your Type 1 is all grown up and already out of the house? Well, that's where my Type 1 guest Andrea and her sister Type None sister Jackie come in: Andrea was an adult and not even on the same side of the country as her sister Jackie and the rest of her family when she was diagnosed. It's a perspective on the adult Type 1 experience that I had never heard before so I had to share it with all of you. It's family night on Ask Me About My Type 1 Dia-Peoples so find your seat at the family dinner table and don't forget to pre-bolus because mom made dessert! And yes, Type 1 did do that... We're hitting the gym Dia-Peoples and the Type Nones who love them!! This very special episode of Ask Me About My Type 1 is all about fitness and exercise but this isn't your typical Type 1 talk about getting that heart rate up. This time I'm talking about the anxiety that comes with exercising with that Type 1 and push beyond it so you can make it to that kick-boxing bootcamp you've been too nervous to sign up for. Exercising with Type 1 can be stressful but my personal trainer professional guests Type 1 Robin and Type None John talk us through what the professional fitness community knows about Type 1 and the things we can do to leave those Type 1 nerves at home and find the perfect fitness class or trainer. This very special episode of Ask Me About My Type 1 is live so lace up your sneakers and grab that gym bag because we're all workin on our fitness!! It's Brand-New-Episode-Monday Dia-Peoples and Dia-Nones! Coming off two whole episodes about the importance of Type 1 community support, I thought it only right to come back with an episode all about the unique way this episodes Type None guest is supporting Type 1s the world over. Frida, who has no direct connection to Type 1 Diabetes, is the creator of Ruby Limes: a clothing brand that produces high-quality clothing products with pockets specifically designed to hold insulin pumps. I bring on my Type 1 friend Nelly, who happens to be a costume designer and stylist in the Mexican television and film industries, and we learn about all the questions Frida had to ask in order to develop the products she now sells to Type 1s all over the world. So grab your best Type None friend and tell them to take notes because this episode is all about Type Nones making Type 1 lives just a little easier by learning more about the problems we work through every day. Type 1 Diabetics can do ANYTHING!! It's a beautiful sentiment about perseverance and determination and how the indomitable spirit of each and every person out there living that Type 1 life can overcome any challenges that this condition of ours throws at us. But as inspiring as this message can be the fact is that it just isn't true. I mean that phrase is ALWAYS followed up by the classic exceptions: military service and flying planes. But while most of us are okay with skipping 5 am PT and not living out of one of those rolly suitcases, there are Type 1s out there who want those very things. Case in point: my Type 1 guest Danielle who was diagnosed while studying to become a commercial airline pilot with hopes of joining the military. Type None guest and Danielle's best friend Roejean joins us as Danielle tells of how frustrating the above phrase can be when Type 1 is literally the only thing hold you back and I learn what it really means when we say Type 1s can't fly planes. So fasten those seatbelts and put your tray tables in their upright and locked positions because this episode is about to take off so brace yourselves as we learn more about the things that Type 1s CAN'T do for once. Oh hi, Dia-Peoples and Type Nones alike! Ask Me About My Type 1 is back with a VERY spicy episode with some extremely thought-provoking Qs. I have on Type 1 Erin along with Type 1 None friend Jillian and the three of us get into some of the more stark realities of Type 1 Diabetes: The fear of missing a late-night low and never waking back up. How the only medication that keeps us alive can also kill us. And how we will most likely have this for the rest of our lives. Erin goes on to tell us about the moment when the Type 1 community helped her push past her initial fears of these darker Type 1 truths and how Type 1 got her to where she is today. We also learn that, much like the Tide pod, Omnipods are NOT for eating either: THE MORE YOU KNOW, DIA-PEOPLE!! Howdy y'all! We're heading out to the middle of America to hear a voice that so often gets overlooked, that of the smalltown Type 1. We talk a lot about the ways that Type 1 can affect, or even interfere with, our lives but there are so many instances when life itself can affect the way we experience our Type 1. Which is why this week I have on Kameran, who tells us all about the very specific challenges that Type 1s from rural communities like her face on a daily basis. Things like living hours away from her endocrinologist, or EVERYONE in town knowing her name but not willing to talk about her Type 1 because they didn't want to make her feel bad, or literally being only one of two Type 1s in her entire town, the other being her younger brother. It's a first hand account of the smalltown Type 1 experience and the Type 1 journey that all of us must navigate no matter where we come from. SPECIAL ALERT!! SPECIAL ALERT!! BONUS EPISODE!! BONUS EPISODE!! No this is not a drill Dia-Peoples and Type Nones! In honor of Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month Ask Me About My Type 1 is releasing a bonus episode where I bring Jen Bartels back on to talk about her experience with anxiety and depression and how she feels both have been effected by her recent Type 1 diagnosis. It's an honest discussion about the very real psychological toll that Type 1 can take and one that I urge all of us to be part of this month. If you find yourself struggling, you're not alone. If you're in need of help, reach out. Friends, family, mental health professionals; there are so many people out there that care about you and want to understand what you're going through so they can help. It's a star-studded episode this week, Dia-babies, as I sit down and talk into my laptop mic with actress, writer, and comedian Jennifer Bartels alongside our Type None guest and her boyfriend, Vance. In addition, to be the most famous of my guest, Jen is also the most recently diagnosed Type 1 I've had on yet and her story gives a really interesting and eye-opening look into the not so bright side of Type 1. The first few years after diagnosis can be hectic for anyone, but imagine having to do it in your 30s when you thought you had life pretty well figured out. Jen tells us what it's been like learning how to be her own pancreas for the past two years as she navigates auditions, exercise, and social situations while Vance talks to us about just how frustrating it is not even knowing what you don't know but how candy can now solve a lot of Jen's problems. So check your toxic positivity at the door, prepare for some cold hard truthy realness, and don't forget to duck and cover (you'll see what I mean) on this week's episode of Ask Me About My Type 1.
