A tiny bite from a tiny tick can trigger a complex disease which speaks to some huge problems with our healthcare system. In this episode, we explain the biology, controversy, and cultural blind spots around Lyme disease, a condition that reflects much more than just a bacterial infection. It's also a mirror for our most urgent public health issues: inequality, misinformation, climate change, and the growing mistrust of science. We speak with two world-class experts: • Dr. John Aucott: Director of the Johns Hopkins Lyme Disease Clinical Research Center and leading voice on post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome (PTLDS) • Dr. Richard Marconi: Professor of microbiology and immunology at Virginia Commonwealth University, and a pioneering scientist behind next-generation Lyme vaccines Together, we explore: • Why Lyme disease symptoms can linger long after treatment • What makes Lyme so neurologically disruptive (and so hard to diagnose) • How climate change, suburban development, and racial disparities intersect with the rise of tick-borne illness • The dangers of alternative medicine grifters preying on desperate patients • The truth about the original Lyme vaccine, and what's coming next... We also share practical prevention tips and discuss how Lyme disease is shaping the future of infectious disease research, diagnostics, and brain health. This is... This is not the kind of story that wraps up neatly with a bow. Rebecca Fraser's story is raw, messy, and unfinished because healing after deep betrayal, family fracture, and years of abusive relationships with narcissists is never clean or simple. It's the kind of survival story that digs into the parts most people don't want to talk about, the shame, the loneliness, the repeated heartbreak, and the unbearable weight of carrying trauma in your body for years. In this episode, Rebecca shares her lived experience of growing up in a home torn apart by infidelity and addiction, being cast as the “problem child,” shuffled into foster care as a teenager, and entering a series of romantic relationships that only deepened her wounds. Alongside this emotional pain, she has been fighting a long battle with Lyme disease, a battle she believes was intensified by the unrelenting stress and trauma she endured. We explore the nervous system scars left by betrayal trauma, the painful roles children are assigned within dysfunctional families, and the long-term impact of being repeatedly gaslit, invalidated, and silenced not just by partners, but by family and community. Rebecca speaks openly about the heartbreak of losing friendships, the feeling of being “too much” for others, and the internal struggle of not trusting herself to choose safe people anymore. For clinicians in functional medicine, these cases are all too familiar. While antibiotics, herbal medicines, biofilm disruptors, and immune support are key in managing Lyme disease, restoring quality sleep is just as essential. Without sleep, healing stalls. It is during deep sleep that glymphatic clearance occurs, immune cells regenerate, and the nervous system resets. Herbal solutions can help patients with Lyme-related insomnia achieve deep, restorative sleep. This article explores how Lyme disrupts sleep physiology and how Moss Nutrition's new Sleep Select Herbal—a blend of saffron, valerian, American skullcap, passionflower, and Ziziphus spinosa—can help restore calm and rest. These botanicals are supported by clinical trials and tailored to address the unique neuroimmune dysregulation seen in Lyme disease. The Limits of Conventional Sleep Aids Many Lyme patients are prescribed benzodiazepines, sedative antihistamines, or off-label antidepressants for insomnia. While these may offer temporary relief, they rarely address root causes. Over time, they can disrupt sleep architecture, desensitize GABA receptors, and create dependency or withdrawal problems. By contrast, botanical nervines and adaptogens support endogenous pathways—enhancing GABA, modulating cortisol, and recalibrating circadian rhythm—without suppressing natural neurotransmission. This is the core strategy behind Sleep Select Herbal. How Lyme Disease Disrupts Sleep and Creates Nervous Tension 1. Neuroinflammation and Cytokine Overload Borrelia and its coinfections invade the central nervous system, triggering microglial activation and the release of inflammatory cytokines like IL-6, TNF-alpha, and IL-1β. These cytokines interfere with the function of sleep-promoting areas in the brain, such as the hypothalamus and suprachiasmatic nucleus. Impact: Reduced sleep drive, disrupted circadian signaling, and altered neurotransmitter synthesis. 2. Cortisol Dysregulation and HPA Axis Dysfunction Patients with chronic Lyme disease often exhibit abnormal cortisol rhythms—typically low in the morning and elevated at night. This flipped curve perpetuates insomnia, often manifesting as nighttime awakenings or difficulty falling asleep. Impact: Low melatonin, nighttime anxiety, impaired parasympathetic tone, and reduced vagal tone. 3. GABA and Serotonin Imbalance Lyme disease inflammation can disrupt the synthesis and receptor sensitivity of GABA and serotonin—the primary calming neurotransmitters. This leads to hyperarousal, panic, and light, unrefreshing sleep. Impact: Reduced GABAergic tone increases muscle tension, rumination, and sympathetic dominance. Five Botanicals to Restore Sleep in Lyme Disease Each herb in Sleep Select Herbal addresses a distinct but overlapping mechanism contributing to insomnia and nervous tension. Clinically formulated Sleep Select Herbal supports deep, restorative sleep for patients with Lyme-related insomnia and nervous tension. 1. Saffron (Crocus sativus) – The Circadian Calibrator In a 2021 double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 120 adults with poor sleep, saffron (affron®) at 14–28 mg improved sleep quality, reduced insomnia severity, and increased evening melatonin levels without next-day sedation (Lopresti et al., 2021). Mechanisms: Increases nighttime melatonin Reduces evening cortisol Improves sleep onset and continuity Patient Profile: Individuals with delayed sleep phase, high evening cortisol, or mood disturbances upon waking. 2. Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) – The GABAergic Grounder Valerian root enhances GABA signaling by inhibiting its breakdown and modulating GABA-A receptors. A clinical trial showed valerian significantly improved total sleep time, reduced latency, and enhanced sleep efficiency (Shekhar et al., 2024). Mechanisms: Binds GABA-A receptors without habituation Reduces anxiety and muscle tension

As temperatures rise and outdoor activities increase, it's important to remain vigilant about the risk of Lyme disease. The black-legged tick, commonly known as the deer tick, is behind most Lyme disease cases in Illinois, where infections have been steadily increasing. Symptoms can range from fever and joint pain to more severe neurological issues. Many cases remain unreported or misdiagnosed due to their similarity to other illnesses. Each spring, State Representative Dan Swanson champions a resolution to mark May as Lyme Disease Awareness Month, urging for increased federal funding and expanded prevention education, especially for children, Illinois' most at-risk group. The measure now moves to the full House for approval.

Key Takeaways: Dr. Louis Teulières, a multi-national doctor with an MD and PhD, has been actively involved with ILADS since 2016 due to his research on bacteriophages at the University of Leicester. Frustrated with the limitations of antibiotic treatments for Borrelia, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, Dr. Teulières explored bacteriophages as a novel diagnostic and therapeutic approach. Due to regulatory challenges in administering phage therapy, Dr. Teulières and his team developed a phage-based test that can directly detect the presence of Borrelia bacteria. This test, marketed by Red Labs in Europe for the past four years, has been used on thousands of patients and can differentiate between early, late-stage, and post-treatment Lyme disease. Dr. Teulières is now working to expand the test's reach in the U.S., seeking partnerships with American clinicians and researchers to validate the test and pursue FDA clearance. The discussion underscores the need for innovative diagnostic tools to improve Lyme disease detection and accelerate healing journeys for patients. About Dr. Louis Teulières: Medical degree from University of Nice, France. Specializations in immunology, hematology, immunopathology, bacteriology, and epidemiology at the Pasteur Institute in Paris and CDC in Atlanta. Former researcher at the Pasteur Institute, contributing to studies on immune and infectious diseases such as HIV. Active member of the immunology team that received the Nobel Prize in 2008 for discovering the HIV virus in 1983. Founder of CMIL clinics in Lisbon and Paris, specializing in immune and infectious diseases, Lyme disease, and neurodegenerative conditions. Co-founder of PHELIX, a charity dedicated to phage-based research and diagnostics in Lyme disease. Collaborates with University of Leicester, St Thomas Hospital in London, and other world-class healthcare professionals. This episode is brought to you by Pique Life, Momentous, and Lumebox. When we think about disease and chronic illness, we don't usually consider the possibility of a lab leak or a government experiment gone wrong. Today's guest sheds light on her investigation into Lyme disease, its disturbing origins, and how it's impacted patient treatment. Today on The Dhru Purohit Show, Dhru sits down with writer and producer Kris Newby to discuss her theory on the origins of Lyme disease. She explores the possible role of weaponized ticks, the mismanagement of Lyme disease treatment, and the implications of military secrecy surrounding biological experiments. Kris also emphasizes the need for a deeper understanding of Lyme disease's complexity and its broader impact on public health. She highlights the importance of awareness, research, and advocacy for better treatment options while sharing her personal journey with Lyme disease and how it affected her family. Kris Newby is an award-winning science writer and the senior producer of the Lyme disease documentary UNDER OUR SKIN, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was a 2010 Oscar semifinalist.
