How much would you endure to save your life and your child's? Mary Lyn Hammer takes us on an extraordinary journey through the medical wilderness of Lyme disease, revealing the devastating reality of this widely misunderstood condition. After being bitten by a tick during a business conference, Mary Lynn spent six and a half years suffering through debilitating symptoms while doctors repeatedly missed her diagnosis. The disease struck during her pregnancy, passing to her unborn daughter and setting them both on a path of chronic illness. From extreme skier to someone who couldn't walk up stairs, Mary Lyn watched her vibrant life fade away despite visiting countless medical professionals. When finally diagnosed, she faced a treatment ordeal that would challenge the strongest spirit. With a six-figure medical debt accumulating and her daughter showing cognitive challenges, Mary Lyn refused to accept conventional wisdom about chronic Lyme. Her turning point came through discovering the role of biofilms in protecting the bacteria from treatment – a breakthrough that eventually led to complete recovery for both mother and daughter. The revelation that Lyme disease can be sexually transmitted and passed in utero reveals why entire families often suffer without understanding why. Through years of research and personal experimentation, Mary Lynn developed a comprehensive three-phase protocol that has condensed recovery time from years to just months. Her approach addresses not just the bacterial infection but the complex immune dysfunction and detoxification challenges that make Lyme so difficult to overcome.Today, Mary Lyn's daughter is 24, a college graduate thriving without limitations. Through her platform Champion for Life and her book "Over My Dead Body," Mary Lynn is bringing hope to countless sufferers who've been told their condition is untreatable or imaginary. From Amy:Cara Pacific Campbell was the first person who took me up on my offer of a 1:1 Book Writing Mentorship and put her trust in me. I was grateful that someone so vibrant felt drawn to working with me, but looking back, it makes perfect sense. When we are paying attention, we're drawn to our people. Cara and I are both high-performing women who worked way too hard and paid a steep price with our health. As in, our bodies made us quit our careers when our minds thought that we could—had to—power through. Instead, we were sidelined. And why did we think we had to power through? Well... how else would we have any meaningful impact in life? How else did we have value? Which is a societal misperception that has needed addressing for a very long time. What we've been through, many are going through now.Also... we are both people who communicate who we are through our colors of choice. I think of Cara in vibrant yellows and reds. These lively signature colors are very much at odds with what Cara was living with in her battle with chronic Lyme disease. There's a huge silver lining. Cara finally connected to her dreams of work in Peru, tapping into ancient knowledge that now infuses this book. And hey, I taught beginning Spanish for a few years. I've always thought that teaching Spanish was a way station on the journey to something beyond that. This book was one of those meaningful stops on the journey. Oh, and also...Pretty sure that Cara and I are going to host a Writing Revival in Peru someday.Picture yourself there with us. How awesome would that be?Meanwhile, you can actively witness the culmination of her book journey if that's calling to you, or simply take courage from hearing how it came into being. Me? I got to help Cara infuse this book with her witty, deep, infectious wisdom. I feel profoundly proud and grateful to know that I was there at Cara's beginning as an author, and that she was there at my beginning as a book writing mentor. What a beautiful testament to my vision for Courageous Wordsmith. It's a full-circle episode and it feels like that.Enjoy! Cara Pacific Campbell is a top-performing sales leader turned author, coach, and resilience expert. After a medical collapse ended her high-achieving career, she began an unexpected healing journey—one that blends neuroscience, ancient wisdom, and the gritty reality of burnout recovery. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Myriah Hinchey, a functional medicine practitioner specializing in chronic illness and immune dysfunction, to explore the complex world of autoimmunity through the lens of Lyme disease and stealth pathogens. We dive into how these microbes evade the immune system, disrupt the body's internal balance, and target areas of weakness — from old injuries to inflamed tissues. Dr. Hinchey explains how this leads to persistent inflammation, neurological symptoms, and gut dysfunction, often without obvious signs of infection. You'll learn why a root-cause approach to chronic infections must go beyond antimicrobials — incorporating immune support, detoxification, terrain rebuilding, and the smart use of herbal medicine.   If you've struggled with unexplained symptoms, autoimmunity, or suspect hidden infections might be at play, this conversation will help you understand the deeper mechanisms — and what true healing actually takes. Key Takeaways: The central focus in treating Lyme disease should be on restoring immune balance and competency rather than solely targeting pathogens with antibiotics. Lyme disease can lead to significant systemic disruptions, manifesting in symptoms such as fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, and even neuropsychiatric disorders. A therapeutic lifestyle approach, including dietary changes, detoxification, and stress management, is essential for effective management of chronic vector-borne diseases. Herbal medicine, especially herbs like Cryptolepis, Chinese Skullcap, and Japanese Knotweed, play a vital role in managing inflammation and immune dysregulation. More About Dr. Myriah Hinchey, ND: Dr. Myriah Hinchey, a Naturopathic physician and Fellow of the Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs (MAPS), is a recognized expert in the field of Lyme disease and other complex chronic inflammatory conditions, with over 17 years of specialized experience. As a physician and the Medical Director at TAO, an integrative center for healing, she has successfully guided thousands of patients towards recovery from their complex chronic inflammatory conditions. Additionally, she is the founder and owner of LymeCore Botanicals, a herbal medicine company focused on providing effective solutions for healing vector-borne diseases. Dr. Hinchey is dedicated to treating patients of all ages, with a specialty in pediatrics, and is also a sought-after speaker, passionately educating healthcare professionals on the pathophysiology of vector-borne diseases and how to successfully integrate functional, herbal, and lifestyle medicine into their practices.  A tiny bite from a tiny tick can trigger a complex disease which speaks to some huge problems with our healthcare system. In this episode, we explain the biology, controversy, and cultural blind spots around Lyme disease, a condition that reflects much more than just a bacterial infection. It's also a mirror for our most urgent public health issues: inequality, misinformation, climate change, and the growing mistrust of science. We speak with two world-class experts: • Dr. John Aucott: Director of the Johns Hopkins Lyme Disease Clinical Research Center and leading voice on post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome (PTLDS) • Dr. Richard Marconi: Professor of microbiology and immunology at Virginia Commonwealth University, and a pioneering scientist behind next-generation Lyme vaccines Together, we explore: • Why Lyme disease symptoms can linger long after treatment • What makes Lyme so neurologically disruptive (and so hard to diagnose) • How climate change, suburban development, and racial disparities intersect with the rise of tick-borne illness • The dangers of alternative medicine grifters preying on desperate patients • The truth about the original Lyme vaccine, and what's coming next... This is not the kind of story that wraps up neatly with a bow. Rebecca Fraser's story is raw, messy, and unfinished because healing after deep betrayal, family fracture, and years of abusive relationships with narcissists is never clean or simple. It's the kind of survival story that digs into the parts most people don't want to talk about, the shame, the loneliness, the repeated heartbreak, and the unbearable weight of carrying trauma in your body for years. In this episode, Rebecca shares her lived experience of growing up in a home torn apart by infidelity and addiction, being cast as the “problem child,” shuffled into foster care as a teenager, and entering a series of romantic relationships that only deepened her wounds. Alongside this emotional pain, she has been fighting a long battle with Lyme disease, a battle she believes was intensified by the unrelenting stress and trauma she endured. We explore the nervous system scars left by betrayal trauma, the painful roles children are assigned within dysfunctional families, and the long-term impact of being repeatedly gaslit, invalidated, and silenced not just by partners, but by family and community. Rebecca speaks openly about the heartbreak of losing friendships, the feeling of being “too much” for others, and the internal struggle of not trusting herself to choose safe people anymore. For clinicians in functional medicine, these cases are all too familiar. While antibiotics, herbal medicines, biofilm disruptors, and immune support are key in managing Lyme disease, restoring quality sleep is just as essential. Without sleep, healing stalls. It is during deep sleep that glymphatic clearance occurs, immune cells regenerate, and the nervous system resets. Herbal solutions can help patients with Lyme-related insomnia achieve deep, restorative sleep. This article explores how Lyme disrupts sleep physiology and how Moss Nutrition's new Sleep Select Herbal—a blend of saffron, valerian, American skullcap, passionflower, and Ziziphus spinosa—can help restore calm and rest. These botanicals are supported by clinical trials and tailored to address the unique neuroimmune dysregulation seen in Lyme disease. The Limits of Conventional Sleep Aids Many Lyme patients are prescribed benzodiazepines, sedative antihistamines, or off-label antidepressants for insomnia. While these may offer temporary relief, they rarely address root causes. Over time, they can disrupt sleep architecture, desensitize GABA receptors, and create dependency or withdrawal problems. By contrast, botanical nervines and adaptogens support endogenous pathways—enhancing GABA, modulating cortisol, and recalibrating circadian rhythm—without suppressing natural neurotransmission. This is the core strategy behind Sleep Select Herbal. How Lyme Disease Disrupts Sleep and Creates Nervous Tension 1. Neuroinflammation and Cytokine Overload Borrelia and its coinfections invade the central nervous system, triggering microglial activation and the release of inflammatory cytokines like IL-6, TNF-alpha, and IL-1β. These cytokines interfere with the function of sleep-promoting areas in the brain, such as the hypothalamus and suprachiasmatic nucleus. Impact: Reduced sleep drive, disrupted circadian signaling, and altered neurotransmitter synthesis. 2. Cortisol Dysregulation and HPA Axis Dysfunction Patients with chronic Lyme disease often exhibit abnormal cortisol rhythms—typically low in the morning and elevated at night. This flipped curve perpetuates insomnia, often manifesting as nighttime awakenings or difficulty falling asleep. Impact: Low melatonin, nighttime anxiety, impaired parasympathetic tone, and reduced vagal tone. 3. GABA and Serotonin Imbalance Lyme disease inflammation can disrupt the synthesis and receptor sensitivity of GABA and serotonin—the primary calming neurotransmitters. This leads to hyperarousal, panic, and light, unrefreshing sleep. Impact: Reduced GABAergic tone increases muscle tension, rumination, and sympathetic dominance. Five Botanicals to Restore Sleep in Lyme Disease Each herb in Sleep Select Herbal addresses a distinct but overlapping mechanism contributing to insomnia and nervous tension. Clinically formulated Sleep Select Herbal supports deep, restorative sleep for patients with Lyme-related insomnia and nervous tension. 1. Saffron (Crocus sativus) – The Circadian Calibrator In a 2021 double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 120 adults with poor sleep, saffron (affron®) at 14–28 mg improved sleep quality, reduced insomnia severity, and increased evening melatonin levels without next-day sedation (Lopresti et al., 2021). Mechanisms: Increases nighttime melatonin Reduces evening cortisol Improves sleep onset and continuity Patient Profile: Individuals with delayed sleep phase, high evening cortisol, or mood disturbances upon waking. 2. Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) – The GABAergic Grounder Valerian root enhances GABA signaling by inhibiting its breakdown and modulating GABA-A receptors. A clinical trial showed valerian significantly improved total sleep time, reduced latency, and enhanced sleep efficiency (Shekhar et al., 2024). Mechanisms: Binds GABA-A receptors without habituation Reduces anxiety and muscle tension
