In this episode, I interview Dr. Zac Telfer to discuss medical training, the history of Lyme disease, and how and who discovered it. We then discuss acute Lyme disease.Lyme disease, in many aspects, is very straightforward, but in others, it can be confusing and even controversial. Living in Wisconsin, I have seen many with acute Lyme disease and helped them get better. However, there is a chronic Lyme disease and a separate post-Lyme treatment disorder, shrouded in a cloud of mystery and confusion. These include diagnosis, testing, and treatments. Many of the symptoms overlap with fibromyalgia. Research is ongoing, and many who have been diagnosed have been through ongoing struggles. Many have felt abandoned by traditional medical providers. In that vacuum, alternative medicine has attempted to find meaningful answers and solutions. We will unpack these using an evidence-based medical approach to offer helpful and meaningful insights. The topic of Lyme disease is relevant to fibromyalgia because many people have been diagnosed with Chronic Lyme disease or post-Lyme treatment syndrome. Many have been diagnosed through methods not approved by the FDA or CDC. Their symptoms overlap with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. That begs the question, are these the same entities? We will discuss this in more detail in subsequent episodes. I hope you have enjoyed the podcast. If you think you have Lyme disease, make sure you discuss this with your doctor. Dr. Lenz is an internist, pediatrician, lifestyle medicine physician, and clinical lipidologist interested in helping those with fibromyalgia and related problems go beyond just learning to live with it and even reverse fibromyalgia. He is also the author of the book "Conquering Your Fibromyalgia: Real Answers and Real Solutions for Real Pain. " It is also available on audiobook with Dr. Lenz as the narrator. If you have questions or topics, you would like to have discussed on a future podcast, email Dr. Lenz at email@example.com. You can also share a recording of your question. If you have a question, it is likely that hundreds of others have the same question. You can also go to Conquerinyourfibromyalgia.com to learn more through blogs Dr. Lenz has done on fibromyalgia. Dr. Cornish is an integrative functional physician working at the Amen Clinics. She was introduced to chronic Lyme disease when working with a patient who was not cured by a short course of antibiotics. The patient, a landscaper who presented with a bullseye rash followed by ongoing Lyme symptoms, had been labeled as a “drug seeking” patient. This caused Dr. Cornish to ask the question, “Who in the world drug-seeks antibiotics?” After joining a medical practice in a Lyme endemic area, Dr. Cornish learned about the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS), and eventually became a Board member. While CT and MRI scans of the brain examine the function and anatomy, Dr. Cornish explains that a SPECT scan, a single photon emission computerized tomography scan, looks at brain activity and blood flow. She explains that areas of the brain that have less blood flow or activity appear almost like “holes” on a SPECT scan. These changes can be caused by toxins, head injury, Alzheimer's, Lyme disease and other infections.Although SPECT scans alone are not diagnostic of Lyme disease, scans can be used to figure out what questions to ask. Dr. Cornish looks for areas of inflammation and “scattered early activity”. Later in the disease process, the activity may be less scattered and may take on a scalloped appearance with decreased blood flow, indicating brain inflammation. The scan, along with a physical exam and detailed patient history help a physician determine differential diagnoses. Dr. Cornish notes that brain inflammation can be caused by a number of toxins such as mold, Lyme, and other tick-borne infections. Read the rest of the show notes!

This time, Patricia Cosulich (your host) is in the guest seat! Jake Mayers is the interviewer. Jake is a fellow coach, Lyme warrior, and performer/ artist, and he brings a fresh and fun perspective to this episode (while also keeping it real, as always). Together, they discuss how Patricia learned to embrace that life is transition (which did not come naturally to her). As a highly inquisitive and curious person, Patricia liked to question and understand everything. She was also a planner. After a number of events in her life, she chose to stop asking why. In learning to let go and embrace change and adaptability, she found the freedom to enjoy her life. In her early adult years, improvisational forms of dance and theatre helped her learn to be in the moment, connect with her body and intuition, and listen and communicate with others more deeply. Her healing process has allowed her to step into the fullest expression of herself yet– one where she can be creative, action-driven, have fun, and do so without burning out or flaring up. She believes you can be the active designer and conscious creator of your own life, and is passionate about developing practical tools and systems to make that a reality, all within a space of gentleness and compassion. About Your Guest Host, Jake: Jake Mayers is a Transformational Coach that helps people battling chronic illness regain control of life. Jake turned the pain of his 15-year battle with Chronic Lyme Disease into his mission to help others. But first, he failed Kindergarten- yes, it's okay to laugh. That was when he began cultivating the ability to respond to challenges in an empowering way. He learned to embrace his unique differences as opportunities, rather than obstacles. That mindset propelled him through Lyme Disease and into launching a coaching business to help people live more fulfilled lives! Jake has a unique ability to connect with and support people through difficult times. He endured years of treatments, during which he was unable to function. He learned the hard way, but eventually turned things around. He went on to develop a 4-Step signature coaching model to help others do the same. Jake's work surrounding his 4-Step Model has delivered massive, sustainable transformations. He's an action-oriented empath who can't wait to empower change in your life! Dr. Edward Bassingthwaite grew up riding horses on a cattle property in North Queensland. He earned his veterinary degree from the University of Queensland in 1995 and went into mixed animal practice afterwards. He then spent time doing small animal locum work in both Australia and the UK before falling ill and being diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Lyme Disease. In searching to improve his own health, he investigated and experienced a number of holistic modalities and began to use some to treat his patients. He developed a unique system of treatment called the Whole Energy Body Balance Method (TM), which allows the practitioner to find and heal silent pain, anxiety, and trauma. Not only does Dr. Bassingthwaite use this method to treat his patients, he teaches the method to others. He then started his own mobile practice, which has evolved into working in a brick and mortar practice where he uses a wide variety of modalities to treat his patients, including Whole Energy Body Balance, acupressure, nutrition, Bach Flowers, Homeopathy, Herbal Medicine, and supplements. He has a special interest in dogs with behavior issues and anxiety. Please enjoy this conversation with Dr. Edward Bassingthwaite as we discuss his childhood, veterinary training, the personal health challenge that led him to holistic medicine, and how he manages his time and energy as both a practicing clinician and an online business owner.

According to a recent study, more than 14% of the world's population probably has, or has had, tick-borne Lyme disease – an infection that can cause long and debilitating symptoms. That number is set to rise too, as climate and environment changes continue to increase tick populations and distribution. To help prevent some of these cases, pharmaceutical company Pfizer and biotech company Valneva will soon be testing a new vaccine against Lyme disease with 6,000 volunteers across Europe and in the US. Madeleine Finlay speaks to Dr Eoin Healy about what Lyme disease is and how the vaccine works, and hears from a special guest about their own experience of getting ill with the disease.. Fiona Thorson started dealing with a variety of apparently unrelated medical issues when she was in her mid-20s. For almost 15 years, she worked with allopathic and holistic doctors, eventually getting diagnosed with Lyme Disease and spending a year so debilitated she couldn't work. She learned to trust herself more than the doctors who couldn't cure her chronic illness and identified three root causes that were preventing her from getting better. Since she started working on those, she's been getting stronger and launched a health and wellness business to help others like her find good health and vitality. Guest Bio On your podcast, Fiona Thorson will share a story that will resonate with listeners who have struggled with chronic illness. One thing we have in common is that we often go unheard or dismissed. People are often told they are not really sick or that they're sick but they have to just live with it, but I don't believe we do. I have a passion – I believe that everyone has the innate ability to heal themselves, that there is power in the mind's influence on the body. But there is a problem. The problem is that our modern world is full of toxins that go largely unaddressed and unacknowledged, which result in damage to one's health and well-being, and supportive therapies and practices are less effective. For more than 15 years with chronic illness, I tried numerous allopathic and holistic therapies, as well as mind-body techniques. While I got some temporary relief, my health was still failing. That is, until I identified the root causes of my illness, namely environmental toxins, such as heavy metal toxicity, nanoparticle poisoning & electromagnetic sensitivity. That's why I now teach others how to detox from those toxins so that once this obstacle to cure is overcome, the mind-body connection can more easily be restored, and other health practices will have improved results. From this may come less pain, more energy and stamina, better memory, and more time to do things in life that bring joy. Insidious OnsetFiona Thorson started having health problems in her mid 20s. Her first diagnosis was hyperthyroid, something she had to learn about because she didn't even know what a thyroid was at the time. What she was feeling was consistent with hyperthyroid symptoms - feeling cold, peeling fingernails, tired, constipated - so she started on Synthroid and felt grateful her doctor had ordered the blood test. A couple years later, she started having panic attacks and then recurrent bacterial vaginosis and bladder infections. Doctors prescribed antibiotics for each occurrence so she took them. Then, while she was teaching English in the Middle East, she knew something was wrong so she went to the doctor, who removed her appendix. By the time she was 28 she was having major bladder issues, getting up to pee six or seven times a night. Changing her diet reduced that to only two times each night. She started doing Kundalini yoga for both physical and mental fitness. For the next five years, Fiona still had stomach pain and migraines, which were worsening. She was losing energy and strength despite swimming, walking, bike riding and doing yoga. She lived on a hill and would ride her bike around town to do her errands, but riding - and even walking - up that hill was getting harder and harder so she sold her bike and started taking the bus instead. Her doctors didn't know what was going on. She was tested for diabetes twice, diabetes insipidus three times, celiac disease - they were all negative. She had an ovarian cyst and fibroids on her uterus, so her periods were excruciating. It got so bad she started to believe her doctors, who were telling her that she was just stressed out and needed a vacation. She started thinking “maybe I'm making it all up. Maybe it's all in my head.” She started working with different spiritual modalities and meditation, but none of them

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection transmitted through the bite of a tick, and it can be a serious disease. That's not to say that every tick bite will cause it, but it is something to watch for because the effects of this disease can cause immense harm to your body. You may know this disease by its characteristic bulls-eye presentation on the body. While many people experience the typical symptoms like fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, etc., not everyone will. Sometimes it progresses over a long period of time and you may not even know that you have it. The problem with this disease is that the symptoms could be caused by many other things so it can be easily missed, but there is hope. In today's episode of VitalHealth4You, we are diving deep into the topic of Lyme disease. We'll cover what to watch out for, symptoms to be aware of, and the multifaceted approach that you need to fight off the bacteria, strengthen the immune system, and recover from this disease. What's in this episode: How to know if you have Lyme disease Symptoms to watch for Why daily checks for ticks are important Symptoms of chronic Lyme disease Detoxification methods that can be used to improve your lymphatic flow Supplements and foods that can be used to help fight this disease Ways to boost your immune system For full show notes, resources and links head to: https://vitalhealthcda.com/podcasts/ The Vital Health for You Podcast is for everyone. Unlike many bacterial infections, antibiotic treatment for Lyme disease often fails. And the people who suffer from long-term or post-treatment Lyme disease may be frustrated that they don't get better sooner, or at all. In this episode of On Good Authority, we talk to Monica Embers, associate professor of microbiology and immunology and director of Vector-Borne Disease Research at the Tulane National Primate Research Center, to learn how the bacteria that causes Lyme evades detection, making treatment or management difficult in some cases.

Attracting Birds To Prime Habitat By Playing Recordings Of Their Calls How do you know a restaurant is good? If the parking lot is full of cars, that's a pretty good indication. If it's empty, you probably won't bother stopping. In this case, the restaurant is a newly restored wetland in Michigan and the customers are rails. The birds migrate at night, so if they don't hear other rail calls in an area, they're not likely to stop. Researcher Dustin Brewer is broadcasting recorded rail calls to try to bring the secretive birds to prime habitat—to feed and mate. Rails are declining, mostly due to habitat loss. Experts say if rails are influenced by these recordings, it could help increase the bird's population. Collars, Cameras, And Carcasses: Studying Urban Wildlife When you hear the words “urban wildlife,” you might think of rats scampering across a street, pigeons plopped on railings, or crows fighting over a pizza crust. But urban wildlife are so much cooler and more diverse than they get credit for, and scientists have a lot to learn from them. In the blink of an evolutionary eye, urban wildlife have quickly adapted to changing landscapes and learned to take advantage of sprawling urban areas. Guest Roxanne Khamsi speaks with Dr. Chris Schell, an assistant professor studying urban ecology at the University of California, Berkeley. They chat about why urban wildlife is so cool, how scientists can study them, and what we can learn from our scrappy neighbors. A New Lyme Disease Test In Development May Help Improve Treatment Roughly 476,000 people in the United States are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease each year, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates. However, the CDC says that this number is likely an overcount because many patients receive treatment based on symptoms without a positive test result. On top of that, there are some limitations of the diagnostic tests available for Lyme disease. The FDA-approved Lyme disease tests can only determine if a patient has had Lyme disease in the past, not if they currently have an infection. The test cannot determine if antibiotic treatment was successful, or if a positive test result is due to a re-infection. Guest host Roxanne Khamsi talks with Pete Gwynne, a molecular and microbiologist at the Tufts Lyme Disease Initiative, who is working to solve some of these problems by developing a new diagnostic test for Lyme disease. ‘I Will Not Be Vole Girl'—A Biologist Warms To Rodents The path to becoming a scientist is not unlike the scientific process itself: Filled with dead ends, detours, and bumps along the way. Danielle Lee started asking questions about animal behavior when she was a kid. She originally wanted to become a veterinarian. But after being rejected from veterinary school, she found a fulfilling career as a biologist, doing the type of work she always wanted to do—but never knew was possible for her. Science Friday producer Shoshannah Buxbaum talks with Dr. Danielle Lee, a biologist, outreach scientist, and assistant professor in biology at Southern Illinois University about what keeps her asking questions, what rodents can help us understand about humans, and the importance of increasing diversity in science.

So I have a question for you: What tools and practices are you intentionally employing on a consistent basis to develop mastery of your mind? To help you answer that question, we're going to be diving deep into one specific superpower of the brain: neuroplasticity: The brain's ability to change, reorganize and grow over time. For that growth and change to happen on your own terms, you have to play an integral role. And to help teach you how to play that role masterfully, we have Ben Ahrens, co-founder of Re-Origin, an online brain training program to help people reclaim their health by rewiring their brain. In fact, Re-Origin is the program that I've been using to rewire my brain as I'm healing from Lyme Disease…a chronic illness that Ben knows even more intimately than I…as he spent 3 years bedridden with Lyme Disease…his body in a constant state of hypervigilant fight or flight response… …and the only way he could make his way back to full health, was to reclaim authority over a brain that had been hijacked by fear.
