More than a Recap The Terrible Warriors exists to help empower you to feel confident enough to play and run the games we enjoy here. Which is why this is much more than a recap episode, it is as much a part of our "actual play” as the rest of the story we have presented. Every GM needs to have a session, especially after a major battle or a story arc that has concluded, to take stock and let their players recount the events in their own words. A recap session like this helps equip the GM with specific information about what their players are interested in and what, up to this point, has stuck with them the most. And it equips the players with a renewed sense of motivation and inspiration as they remember why they are invested in seeing this story through. Justin connects with Craig Campbell to talk about his “cozy gaming” solo RPG, Secrets of the Vibrant Isle. The pandemic era of gaming has seen a lot of us forced to spend time alone. And if you weren't fortunate enough to have a good internet connection and a quiet space to connect you might not have been able to replace your old gaming group with a virtual one. Perhaps that's why there's been a rising interest in the genre of sole RPGs. In the Secrets of the Vibrant Isle you will play a person who has chosen to sail out to this mystical place, you explore the terrain and meet it's denizens and after four weeks of in-game time they will decide if you are allowed to remain on the Vibrant Isle or be cast away. Craig will share with us how he came to create the game, some of the design challenges he had to overcome, and what you can expect if you decide to pick up this book for your next evening of alone time. The Kickstarter is happening right now and runs until November 3rd, so there's still time to support this unique game. Behind The Screen: Sweetwater Bank

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 9, 2021 85:54

Welcome to our first attempt at going Behind the Screen, a more one-on-one conversation where Justin shares some tips and stories from his years running tabletop games. In our inaugural Behind the Screen, Justin shares the background story to his Sweetwater Bank campaign he created for 5th Edition D&D while he was hired to run games at Toronto’s Storm Crow Manor. The Challenge Justin had several challenges going into making this campaign. Primarily it needed to be able to pick-up-and-go with zero prep time and little chance to meet the players before their game. And since this game was designed for the DM&Dine Program it needed to be friendly to brand-new players as well as engaging for those who had been playing for years. The set up needed to be quick and it needed to be completed within four hours exactly, every time it was played. Finally Justin wanted to subvert some of the default assumptions of D&D and use this limited time to showcase all the different and varied ways a simple story like Sweetwater could play, this also meant that he wanted to create a story that could absolutely be completed with zero combat while also being open to the players who wanted to roll dice and cast epic spells to destroy their enemies. The Set Up The story of Sweetwater Bank is pretty simple. A tavern, run by a dwarf named Tarry, has recently gotten a reputation for an incredibly popular and possibly addictive mead. Those who try it swear it’s the best thing they’ve ever had and can’t wait to get back. In fact, many people who try it never leave and so a small village has built itself around Tarry’s Tavern solely for the purpose of being close to the mead so they can keep drinking it. However the players are hooked into the mystery, when they arrive they’ll encounter a Hill Giant that has stormed it’s way into town and collapsed into Tarry’s storehouse where all his mead is being kept. But not everything about this encounter, nor this village, is as it seems. Over the next four hours the players will be tasked with unravelling the mystery of Sweetwater Bank, foiling a plot to steal Tarry’s secrets, and deciding for themselves the fate of the town and it’s residents. Special Thanks Special thanks to Sean Horbatiuk for joining us so that Justin could bounce his rambling ideas off of him. Session Zero returns as we journey into the Dark Forest of Davokar and are introduced to the world of Symbaroum. “Twilight Falls, Davokar Darkens” Symbaroum is a game that has been on my short list since I came into contact with it at GenCon 2019. I had seen it being offered by Free League and new that it had origins originally as a game only available in Swedish but I foolishly set it aside at the time as yet-another-sword-and-sorcery-rpg. Then I got to meet Mattias Johnsson Haake, who I got to finally interview last month, and through him learned all about the long journey that Symbaroum and Mattias have taken together. I also looked a little closer at the game itself and what I found was an evocative world with incredibly immersive artwork, a long thought out and lived in history, and game mechanics that didn’t get in the way of it’s rich story about corruption, power, and nature. Three Corrupted Explorers To help guide us into Symbaroum we used their recently released Starter Kit to help describe the setting and then quickly opened up the main core book to create our own characters. Character creation was simple, for the most part, and all three of the characters presented in this Session Zero would make for a terrific long form campaign. This trio was hard to leave behind and I hope this isn’t the last time we visit this setting with them. You’ll meet Sean’s Farsig Unthist, a goblin with a thirst for magic, Velvet’s Gerundin, an elven changeling challenging their destiny, and Justin’s Daramei, a human noble who will compromise everything to gain the power he thinks he deserves. Together they’re all playing with the fires of corruption in their own way as they set foot into the Dark Forest, will they be able to save themselves or will they each drag the other into the darkness with them? Special Thanks Special thanks to Free League Games for sending us a copy of the new Symbaroum Starter Kit as well as the three book collection of the Core Rulebook, The Advanced Players Guide, and the Game Master’s Guide. Justin connects with Daniel Kwan from the ENnie award winning Asians Represent! to talk about his actual play, Dungeons & Da Asians, and his recent writing work for Candlekeep Mysteries Teacher Daniel started off using Dungeons & Dragons as a teaching tool a The ROM, a museum in Toronto, where he used the game as a platform to energize kids imaginations to educate them on the different subjects available at the museum. From there he was invited to conventions like Breakout, where he participated in his first panel, and then to Fan Expo where he came into contact with the larger tabletop community. Not long after that he was preparing to co-create the Asians Represent podcast, which at the time would be just a monthly podcast about elevating Asian representation in tabletop gaming. Presenter As the podcast grew so did their scope and eventually they launched Dungeons & Da Asians, an actual play podcast-within-a-podcast which would explore Asian characters and settings with a cast of Asian players. The community was growing and they’d clearly tapped into something. Then in 2020 they won the Gold ENnie for Best Podcast. Since then they’ve launched Asians Read, where they give critical readings of published games that use Asian themes, tropes, and stereotypes. Production Note: We ran into technical difficulties with the record of Justin’s voice and were only able to recover a backup recording of his voice taken from a different microphone. Thanks for understanding and we’ll return to sounding like polished gems next week. We take a departure from meeting those who make our games to those who make our gaming tools. Justin connects with Anthony Sabatino the co-creator and composer behind the immersive tabletop music app, Tabletop Tunes. Music For Your Games Anthony Sabatino is a graduate of the Berkeley School of Music and a lover of film and videogame scores. When he wanted to find a way to integrate music more fully into his tabletop games he found the tools available online to be lacking. Nothing really did all of the things he wanted and none of the music sounds the way he imagined they should. So he teamed up with his friend Jacob Johnson who could program the code he needed to make an app that can play immersive music creative specifically for tabletop games in an easy interface that helps and not interferes with the GM’s responsibilities while running a game. Inspired by composers like Joe Hisaishi (Princess Mononoke) and Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings) and games like The Witcher III, Skyrim, and Legend of Zelda, Anthony set out to make a collection of tabletop tunes that are all connected by a central theme of adventure and discovery and can help guide players through their stories without overpowering the experience at the table. Immersive and Evocative The way it works is simple, you pick your setting (Cave, Forest, Town, Dungeon, etc) and choose from the available tracks. The tracks are composed to loop indefinitely and have been loudness corrected so that they don’t jump out, startle, or get in the way of the your game. Background music to slip in behind your storytelling. When combat begins you chose the intensity of the battle (Mild, Tense, Epic, or Boss) and during the combat there is a simple slider you can move up and down which will increase voices and complexity of the song so you can ramp tension up and down during the scene. The plan is to release the app with an initial selection of free music and, rather than incorporate ads or other freemium strategies, offer up additional music tracks as packs which can be ordered through the app as needed or desired. Further down the road keep a look out for other settings and genres taking you beyond the fantasy games and into more modern and sci-fi settings as well! Meet The Makers: Mattias Johnsson Haake (Symbaroum)

Today in a special feature of Meet The Makers, Justin connects with Mattias Johnsson Haake, the the project manager, editor, and co-writer behind the critically acclaimed Symbaroum. We talk about this intriguing setting where nature fights back and the lines of good and evil are blurred into shades of grey. We also talk about the strange and wonderful journey that brought Mattias and his creation from a defunct publishing company to merging with Free League Games. Running The Marathon When Mattias founded the Swedish game studio Järnringen in the early 2000’s I don’t think he could ever have expected the journey he and his company would take. They were behind the first iterations of what would one day become Mutant: Year Zero and the creators of Coriolis, but when the company was closed they had to liquidate their properties and sell them off. Coriolis would be sold to a videogame developer who would later license it to Tomas Härenstam at then new and upstart publishing company called Fria Ligan. Fria Ligan, or Free League Games as we know them know, would go on to release Mutant: Year Zero and create the Year Zero engine which would power Forbidden Lands, Tales from the Loop, and Alien The RPG. Meanwhile, after years of being on the outside of the tabletop industry Mattias and two of his business partners made a plan to create a new game, in a new setting, that would launch them back into tabletop and if they were successful the plan was always to merge with Fria Ligan and combine their forces. That new game would become Symbaroum. Teaming with the talented artistry of Martin Grip (Coriolis, The One Ring Second Edition) and rules designed by Mattias Lilja, the three of them created a game that captured the attention of anyone fortunate enough to pick up the book. Merging Järnringen and Fria Ligan into Free League Games would also have another fortunate outcome. The property of Coriolis, once liquidated when Järnringen was shut down, had been purchased by Fria Ligan which meant that after the merger Mattias was once again the owner of one of the first games he had created. Honestly, I can’t wait for the documentary! Game of Thrones Meets Princess Mononoke But what about the game? Mattias describes Symbaroum as a dark and deadly fantasy world where nature fights back and factions vie for control. Themes of colonialism and environmentalism are paramount and while you can certainly play Symbaroum like a traditional hack and slasher the hope is that players will be asked to pause and reflect on their actions. Who are the bad guys in this story? Is a good vs evil binary even appropriate when the invaders are also refugees? The game mechanics have crunch if you want crunch but have also been compared to more story focused playstyles like Power by the Apocalypse games, you won’t get bogged down in hours of combat rolls but be tasked with finding the answers to the mysteries of the world around you. With the rules facing the players, not the GM, the onus is on them to explore the world around and discover the hidden truths of the Forest of Davokar. Getting Started Free League Games has just launched the Starter Set for Symbaroum which will set you and your table up with all you need to do to become explorers and treasure hunters on the edge of the Forest of Davokar. While the full scope of the game’s setting can be found in the core rulebook, Mattias is quick to point out that the Starter Kit is designed to be more than just a sample adventure or a demo. It comes equipped with tables and rules to help you generate your own campaigns using only the Starter Kit, and while the rules are more streamlined for ease of play it will give you more than enough to play with to decide if you want to take a deeper dive into the wilder Symbaroum setting. And what about that wider setting? Mattias is currently working on book 5 of 6 of an ongoing chronicle beginning with The Throne of Thorns: Thistle Hold and he promises that as you progress through these stories that answers to his mysteries will be revealed as well as answers to questions you didn’t even know you had! Today in a special feature of Meet The Makers, Justin connects with Francesco Nepitello, the co-creator of The One Ring, to talk about the ongoing kickstarter success for it’s second edition, partnering with Free League Games, and the unique foundations of the Lord of the Rings mythology in crafting their game. From Wargames to Boardgames to Role Playing Games Francesco shares with us his past and how he came to fall in love with role playing games. From early days in Venice playing wargames with his brother to the lucky happenstance of getting to meet a legendary game designer and coming to recognize the joy in developing games himself. Francesco is also one of the three creators behind the War of the Ring strategy boardgame and in 2011 co-created the first edition of The One Ring. There And Back Again, A Game Designers Tale For years fans of The One Ring have been waiting on a second edition, a new book that would streamline the old rules and provide a more cohesive experience and iron out what Francesco himself calls the “fiddly bits” of the game. Promises of a second edition and of a Moria campaign setting have gone unanswered as Francesco and his team have battled through complications with their old publisher. But those days are behind them now as they’ve found a new home with the prestigious Free League Games (Forbidden Lands, Tales from the Loop). Their attention to detail and connections with award winning artists and writers have made a perfect match for Francesco’s desire to serve up the sort Second Edition that The One Ring deserves. Language Is Key Francesco recognizes the unique qualities of the Lord of the Rings as a setting and understands that at the core of Tolkien’s work was a love of language. Which is why he shares us how the mechanics of the game are all informed by the language of the game, from the names of skills and stats, to the three core pillars of the game (Journeys, Councils, and Combat). And even if certain other world famous tabletop RPGs also use three pillars to describe their gameplay and dice mechanics that seem suspiciously similar, Francesco will kindly point out that they had it printed in the One Ring before they did. Does What It Says On The Tin The Character Creation Cast is just what you think it’s gonna be but then goes to be much more than that. Designed to inspect and explore the character creation phase of TTRPGs it’s no surprise that we wanted to sit down with Ryan to talk about his show after we’ve just dipped our toe into this topic with our own Session Zero series. They break each game examination into three parts, creating character and learning the world and it’s rules, interviewing the creators of the game, and then writing fan fiction about the characters they have created but which they’ll never get a chance to actually play a game with. Character Creation Cast has been ongoing since 2018 and they’ve already explored more than 36 different games and along that way Ryan has picked up some common themes and best examples of what makes character creation in tabletop RPGS so interesting and unique an experience. Blending The Best Into A Puree Of Game So what’s one to do with all this collected knowledge? Why not make your tabletop RPG? And call it Chimera and take the best tools and styles of character creation and world building from the most successful games out there and craft a PbtA game that blends genres and character tropes into unique world building exercise? Ryan’s game is still in testing but he shares with us all about the process and thinking that’s been going into Chimera and what to expect from it and along the way Justin may have even helped him devise a wonderful mechanic to help randomize the character generation process! We’ll have to wait and see if his idea makes it past the testing phase. Safe To Play While Ryan is taking notes on the best games and systems available out there for players he’s also hoping that more and more games begin to include safety tools into the design process of the game itself and not just bootstrapped on after the game ships. We break down our thoughts on the importance of safety tools, offer some personal stories, and share some great examples of safety mechanics in action that can be done in a way that doesn’t just make your game safer but also will improve your story’s performance and the enjoyment of all the players at your table. Session Zero: Nibiru

Life In A Skyless World Session Zero returns with a dive into the unique world of Nibiru. A colossal space station home to millions of humans and the player characters who have no memory about where they came from. “From The Core We Hail” Nibiru first came onto our radar a few years ago when our friends at Modiphius sent us a press release about a game where your characters have no memories and your character sheet, mostly blank at the start of the game, will be filled in over time as you remember your past. What a neat concept! And when we finally decided to explore this game this series we found out very quickly that this game was much more and very different than what we suspected. Nibiru is home to millions of humans who have lived in this artificial environment for as long as their recorded history. The exact length of time is kept vague but it’s alluded to be in the thousands, possibly tens of thousands, of years. Nibiru provides all the air, water, food, and gravity that humans need to survive and clustered in and around massive hollow spheres called Vaults they have built their city states each with unique cultures and customs. The further from the core of Nibiru, where the gravity is closest to Earth and the majority of humans live in and live in mostly luxury, the more alien and strange and inhospitable becomes. There are a lot of questions about Nibiru and no answers will be found in the rulebook. To answer them you’ll have to explore Nibiru as a Vagabond. Remember Your Origin Stories The Vagabonds are a strange class of people in Nibiru. They show up in every corner of the station, always without any memory of where they come from. Confused and vulnerable they find a way to survive among the humans who call this strange station home. And then they begin to recall those memories. And sometimes those memories aren’t always… human. Through playing the game you can declare certain dice rolls to be resolved through a flashback. By remembering something about your past you grant your character a permanent boost to a skill and if you remember enough times you can unlock almost supernatural abilities called Revelations. The quest to uncover your memories will also uncover the secrets of Nibiru, which will always be unique to your game group every time. This is an incredible world to explore with a journaling-centric character creation mechanic (The MEMOs system) to help you craft a unique story for your characters. Today in a Terrible Warriors Podcast Spotlight, Justin connects with Russ Moore from Dumb Dragons Productions Good Old Fashioned D&D Russ started the Dumbgeons & Dragons podcast as a way to keep his gaming group together and to keep his own productions skills fresh and up to date after he accepted a job oversees. The result was an 80+ episode sprawling adventure set in the Rise of Tiamat module from Dungeons & Dragons. As the show grew in size so did their aspirations, bringing in better production and a more focused approach to their story telling. But, now well into their second season, they haven’t forgotten their humble beginnings and try to stay true to the spirit of the game and enjoyment around their table. Tempting Fate Of course it’s hard to do an Actual Play podcast and not be tempted to try other systems, which is where the Facing Fate podcast comes in. As Dumbgeons began to grow so did their appetite for other settings and rule sets. So, in addition to continuing Dumbgeons & Dragons, Russ set out with a new anthology podcast exploring multiple games and their rules. As you might guess from the title their first foray was into a Fate game but since then they’ve also playing PbtA settings like Urban Shadows and are even planning to create their own system for future episodes. Empowering GMs Feeling empowered to try new games but coming from a D&D background was the inspiration to join up with Sean Howard, who we interviewed last week, to create the DM to GM podcast. A show dedicated to helping demystify the role of the GM at your game table. The truth is, if you buy a TTRPG you’re probably going to be the run to run it whether you like it or not. So Russ and Sean break down how they run their games, the lessons they’ve learned along the way, and give you the tools you need to feel confident in running your next, and possibly your first, tabletop game. Today in a Terrible Warriors Podcast Spotlight, Justin connects with Sean Howard from The End of Time & Other Bothers! You may remember Sean as our uncontrollable stripping scoundrel in the Root: The RPG kickstarter special we hosted in 2019. When he's not turning his clothing into improvised weaponry he's hosting a LOT of really cool podcasts. In particular he's the GM and mastermind behind The End of Time & Other Bothers, an Actual Play podcast using Dungeon World and set in the fictional world of one of Sean's other podcasts, the radio drama Alba Salix. Along with End of Time he's also responsible for other long form improvised dramas and actual-play shows and in this interview we break down what we love and what we don't love in the intersection of improv and tabletop storytelling. Like most of the conversations I have with Sean this went all over the place and I hope you get something out of it that will inspire and motivate you towards your next game. "Life Locked and Failing in a DARK FORT" We crash back into another Session Zero flailing for our lives in the madness of MÖRK BORG. "Name Your Character If You Wish. It Will Not Save You" MÖRK BORG dominated at the 2020 Ennies winning awards in Product of the Year, Best Writing, and Best Layout and Design, along with walking away with silver in Best Game. And once you hold the book in your hand you know exactly why it won in all those categories. MÖRK BORG screams off of every page and draws you into the pitch-black heavy metal world of the apocalypse where your characters’ lives are fleeting and pointless and the stakes are so high no one will triumph for long. Rather than make a single character each, Justin and Jo made three characters. You see, in MÖRK BORG your characters might not last very long so it’s a good thing that character creation takes literally seconds to complete. Four dice rolls and a very lean equipment management system and you’re back in the game. You can mourn the loss of your previous character later. In MÖRK BORG, the story is told by the setting and collective experience of the players, and interestingly not entirely but the individual characters you play. We had a LOT of fun delving into this session and of all the games we’ve looked into during our Sessions Zero this is the first where we didn’t want to stop and just keep going right into the game itself Special Thanks Special thanks to Free League Publishing for sending us a copy of MÖRK BORG to try out and you can get your own copy now at MorkBorg.com or on Drive Thru RPG Today's Terrible Warriors were Justin Ecock and Jo Drummond Music is licensed through Epidemic Sound Follow us on Twitter at @dicewarriors and you can support the show by becoming a patron at patreon.com/terriblewarriors where today's patrons will receive copies of all our character sheets from today's episode.

Today in a Terrible Warriors Podcast Spotlight, Justin connects with Rev from The Critshow!  The Critshow has is in their 3rd season of playing Monster of the Week but that wasn't what they had originally intended to do. Days before they had planned to launch their pathfinder actual play podcast they sat down and recorded a dummy session using Monster of the Week as a stand-in game. After recording the tech demo they realized they had stumbled up the real show they wanted to make.  The Critshow has since expanded to include Tales from the Omniverse, a series travelling between multiple words and game rules, and have invited developers of the games they're playing to join them on the show. Currently their working closely with the creator of Rapscallion as they play through a Patreon exclusive campaign called Perilous Tides.  Rev has put a lot of thought into the show he's producing and the intentions behind that show and I'm sure you're going to love listening to The Critshow as much as I have.  You can follow the Critshow on twitter @thecritshow And you can follow Rev himself on twitter @RevDeschain Find out everything you need to know about The Critshow at https://thecritshowpodcast.com/ Music is licensed through Epidemic Sound Follow us on Twitter at @dicewarriors and you can support the show by becoming a patron at patreon.com/terriblewarriors

    Session Zero: Klingon Core Rulebook

Welcome to season 8 of Terrible Warriors!  In this new season we'll be taking a break from the Actual Play content of our past and exploring an often skipped stage of play, the character creation phase.  Creating a character in a TTRPG is oftentimes the most engaging, interesting, and entertaining part of the game. And it should certainly be considered part of the game play. That's why we're starting a new series we're calling "Session Zero" to examine this phase of the game more intimately.  For each Session Zero we'll pick a new TTRPG to play and our players will create their characters on their own time in advance and then present them to the table, after the presentations we'll examine how the process went and discover if this is a game we'd like to keep exploring.  It's like a book club for your games!  In our inaugural Session Zero we return to one of our favourite games of the past couple of years, Star Trek: Adventures and it’s new Klingon Core Rulebook. This past October Modiphius released the Klingon Core Rulebook. What separates this from their other ST:A expansions is that this book can be treated as a stand-alone product, you don't need any other books to start creating your Klingon crew and begin playing a campaign. How does it hold up to the original Star Trek: Adventure setting? Does it find any places for improvements?  Special thanks to Modiphius for sending us a copy of the Klingon Core Rulebook to try out and you can get your own copy now on Drive Thru RPG or by visiting modiphius.com.  Today's Terrible Warriors were Justin Ecock, Jordynne Erin, Cassie Chui, and Velvet Duke Music is licensed through Epidemic Sound  Follow us on Twitter at @dicewarriors and you can support the show by becoming a patron at patreon.com/terriblewarriors where today's patrons will receive copies of all our character sheets from today's episode

Before venturing into the world of The Spire we thought it would be a good idea to talk to one of it's creators. Thankfully he agreed to the conversation!  Grant Howitt is the co-creator of Spire, co-owner of Rowan, Rook, and Decard and the mind behind games such as Goblin Quest, Unbound, One Last Job, and Honey Heist! He's also got a writing credit in the Paranoia Reboot that we loved so much last year.  In our conversation he shared with us how the Spire came to be, the ways the community has responded to it, advice for new GMs venturing into Spire for the first time, and at least one detail he may regret having fought to be included in the game (in his defense it probably sounded very funny at the time).  Be sure to follow Grant on twitter at @gshowitt and check out his own Patreon page where he regularly posts new one-page RPGs to enjoy.  And starting next week we return to our Actual-Play format and begin out campaign to journey through and experience The Spire for ourselves.  Terrible Warriors is made possible thanks to Patreon supporters at Patreon.com/terriblewarriors Follow us on Twitter @dicewarriors
