Did the Netflix series Stranger Things take over your life this holiday season? Do you like conspiracy theories, government secrets, magic and monsters? Have you ever wondered how much the United States Government would pay for a psychic division? Then boy do we have a good news for you! This episode is the second in a series of the true, and not true stories that inspired the world of Stranger Things. In this episode we'll cover: Project Stargate and The Men Who Stare at Goats FYI: If you didn't watch the show, don't worry. The stories we are going to explore in this series exist on their own, you don't need to have seen the show to understand or appreciate them. We just love a theme! If you are curious though, any images we think may be relevant, or are interesting points of comparison, will be included in the corresponding week's photo suite. In this inspiring episode, Monica shares a powerful story from her son's middle school basketball game that mirrors a truth many entrepreneurs overlook: regret hits harder than failure. Whether you're sitting on a bold idea, hesitating to launch a product, or unsure how to take the next step, this episode will push you to move forward, even if you're not sure what the result will be. Because progress doesn't come from perfection, it comes from action.Episode Quote: I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.com“I had started out determined to learn about Amanda, but as more people contacted me wanting to talk, it was Jason they wished to talk about.” - from To the Bridge, A True Story of Motherhood and Murder*This 7th installment of “The Sociopaths Among Us” is about the person who put me I mind to do the series in the first place. His name is Jason Smith, and he is the father of the two children his estranged wife, Amanda Stott-Smith, dropped from Portland's Sellwood Bridge shortly after 1am on May 23, 2009. Amanda was arrested later that same day, a story I partially tell you in the audio (and fully in the book).Walking into a story like this, one knows nothing other than one's own and others' preconceived notions. In the case of a mother who kills a child, these notions run from evil to crazy and not much more. Neither answered for me why Amanda did what she did.It can also be the case, in stories like this, that the real story, or stories, reveal themselves slowly. You can charge directly at it all you like and you are not going to get it. But if you wait, and you listen…In the audio you will hear how people started coming to me with stories about Jason Smith, he was not the man he presented himself to be, they said; that he was very, very good at what he did, and what he did was practice deception.“He could sell ice to an Eskimo, he could sell you the dream,” I was told by the man who'd thought of Jason as his best friend, a thought the man had, by the time he called me, been thoroughly disabused of. I have written before of the sociopath's terrific and terrible talent of being able make you feel as though you ‘get' him as others do not. They spin webs of so, so, so many, lies that eventually catch up with them. They do not register the damage they leave in their wake, or not as something they should care about, and by the time people realize what has happened, the sociopath is onto the next person or situation from which he can gain sustenance. From To the Bridge:“We become grist for the sociopath's mill, in other words; we become his fuel. Dr. Hervey Cleckley, in his seminal work on the psychopathic personality, The Mask of Sanity, posited that what sociopaths lack is ‘soul quality.' Another work I came across called sociopaths “soul eaters of Psychophagic.' Reading this, I pictured Goya's painting Saturn Devouring His Son and considered the idea that sociopaths must feed on others because they lack souls of their own.”Consider what this consumption can do to others.I can understand someone wondering right about now why I do not have more sympathy for Jason Smith, who after all lost his four-year son. Read on… * To the Bridge is a"Kindle Exclusive Deal" this month. If you grab it, let me know what you think.

In March 1928, 9-year-old Walter Collins disappeared from Los Angeles after going to the movies. His single mother, Christine Collins, reported him missing, triggering a massive LAPD search amid the department's corruption scandal and recent criticism over the brutal Marion Parker murder. Five months later, the LAPD reunited Christine with an impostor boy from Illinois claiming to be Walter to salvage their reputation. Despite obvious physical differences and confirmation from others that he wasn't her son, Captain J.J. Jones coerced her into taking him home and, when she persisted with evidence, had her involuntarily committed to a psychiatric ward for about a week under "Code 12" to silence her. The boy soon confessed to being 12-year-old runaway Arthur Hutchins Jr., securing Christine's release and sparking public outrage. Meanwhile, the case linked to the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders: serial killer Gordon Stewart Northcott, aided by his mother and nephew Sanford Clark, abducted, abused, tortured, and murdered young boys on his farm. Evidence and confessions tied Walter to the victims—he was reportedly killed with an axe—though his body was never definitively found. Northcott was hanged in 1930; his mother received life. Christine sued successfully for false imprisonment (though payment was evaded) and helped inspire a 1931 law requiring due process for psychiatric commitments. She never accepted Walter's death, searching until her own in 1964. The story, dramatized in the 2008 film Changeling, exposes police corruption, institutional misogyny, and profound maternal grief. This month's Branch of Hope sponsored charity is: The Parents of Murdered Children. POMC provides ongoing emotional support, education, prevention, advocacy, and awareness for survivors of homicide victims, while working toward a world free of murder. It is the only national self-help organization specifically focused on the aftermath of murder. It emphasizes helping survivors reconstruct a "new life" after acute grief and dealing with the criminal justice system. What would you do if your life—or the life of your child—depended on an impossible choice?
In the early hours of March 3, 1993, someone snuck into the Maryland home of Millie Horn, where she lived with her disabled eight-year-old son, Trevor, and his nurse, Janice Saunders. After shooting both women in the head multiple times, the intruder smothered Trevor Horn to death, then quietly left the house. Hours later, the bodies of all three were discovered by Millie's sister, who stepped by to check on them.Almost immediately, suspicion fell on Millie Horn's ex-husband, Lawrence, who lived thousands of miles away in California, but with whom she'd spoken just hours before the murders occurred. In time, investigators were able to establish a financial motive, linking Lawrence Horn to the murders, yet they were unable to place Horn in Maryland when the murders occurred. Ultimately, Lawrence Horn would be tried and convicted for all three murders, but by that time, he wasn't sole perpetrator of the crime. And when prosecutors were finally able to pin down the men responsible for the deaths, it turned out the killers received guidance from a very surprising source.Recommendations:Phantasma By Kaylie SmithHappy Place By Emily HenryReferencesAssociated Press. 1993. NFL legend Marshawn Lynch joins Bill for a conversation that bounces from football philosophy to strip club etiquette. Marshawn shares stories from his playing days, how Ray Lewis read him like a book his rookie year and the mental chess game that separates Hall of Famers from everyone else. They clash over Damar Hamlin's on-field collapse and whether that game should have been canceled: logic vs. emotion, fans vs. optics. From there, the conversation swerves into classic Club Random territory, as they bond over Barbra Streisand fan mail, Ricky Williams as weed's original martyr, locker-room backstabbing, why some franchises stay perpetually broken and what scared Marshawn in Bill's bathroom — let's just say, we're all family now. Have you ever finished a book you absolutely loved but found hard to explain? In this episode of Unabridged, we're discussing our January 2026 Book Club pick, National Book Award winner The True True Story of Raja the Gullible (and His Mother) by Rabih Alameddine (Bookshop.org | Libro.fm), which is brilliant in ways that are sometimes hard to articulate. Before diving into the discussion, we start with a bookish check-in: Ashley shares about Vera Wong's Guide to Snooping (on a Dead Man) by Jesse Q. Sutanto (Bookshop.org | Libro.fm), and Jen talks about Life on a Little-Known Planet: Dispatches from a Changing World by Elizabeth Kolbert (Bookshop.org | Libro.fm).From there, we dig into Raja the Gullible, talking about Raja's unforgettable narrative voice, the novel's nonlinear structure, and the way humor and tragedy coexist on the page. We explore Raja's complicated, tender relationship with his mother, the impact of memory and trauma across decades, and how personal stories are shaped by larger national and historical forces. We also share book pairings, give this one a resounding five bookish hearts, and wrap up with a couple of Unabridged favorites. If you're participating in the 2026 Unabridged Reading Challenge, this book fulfills the category “book from an awards list.” If you read this one, we'd love to hear what you thought!Visit the Unabridged website for our full show notes and links to the books mentioned in the episode. Finally, is this the True Story of Frankenstein?
Chad Hayes and his brother Carey wrote The Conjuring—a film with no sex, no blood, and two Christians as the heroes. It became one of the highest-grossing horror films of all time. What most people don't know is that the supernatural events didn't stop when the cameras turned off. Strange voices interrupted phone calls with Lorraine Warren. Objects moved on their own in the artifacts room. Chad's son fled the set after something started operating by itself in the dark. And that was just the beginning. In this episode, Chad shares what Lorraine Warren was really like, the moment on set when she walked up to a crew member and knew exactly what was tormenting him, and why he's spent the last two decades chasing true stories of demonic confrontation, from a possessed man chained to a wall in India to the haunted LaLaurie House in New Orleans where something pounded on a grown man's chest in the middle of the night. Chad opens up about all of it, plus his upcoming projects, why he believes the best horror movies are really love stories, and why he only tells stories where the devil loses. Major aviation incidents can floor a crew member. Whether that's an extended stay on your layover, or something as life changing as 9/11. These big events can completely change airline policies and safety regulations, and how flight attendants and pilots work. But some things never change, and that's the cabin crew's ability to make the best of a bad situation, and the call of The Crew Room is usually there to help the crew debrief, let loose and forget the big stuff, even for a short while. In today's episode of The Red Eye, we visit The Crew Room during several different major aviation events. And hear the true story of what really takes the strain on behalf of the crew...Send us a text! Bill Maher sits down with filmmaker Dan Farah to discuss his documentary "Age of Disclosure" about UFOs (sorry, UAPs!) and government cover-ups. Dan reveals what high-level intelligence officials told him on camera about crash retrievals and non-human beings. They debate everything from ocean-dwelling alien crafts to Steven Spielberg's prophetic filmmaking, why Mars is a terrible vacation spot, and whether getting probed is really as common as '90s pop culture suggested. Bill weighs in on whether Trump could be the one to announce “we are not alone” (with some very real concerns about optics), while also battling a stubborn Zippo lighter that may or may not need alien intervention. Prior to that, the affable 19 year old had been present at several exorcisms performed on his fiancé's little brother, David Glatzl. At the last exorcism performed on David, Arne challenged the demon that was terrorizing David to come into him and take him instead. When the book The Salt Path was published, readers were moved by the story of a couple who, after losing everything, rebuilt their lives through nothing more than determination, their love for one another, and a very long walk. A decade later, journalist Chloe Hadjimatheou begins to pull at a thread—and what unravels is a much darker and more complicated tale.Chameleon is a production of Campside Media and Audiochuck.Follow Chameleon on Instagram @chameleonpod Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Originally released on our Patreon in January of 2022. In the summer of 2000, a drug debt set off a chain of events that no one could take back. Ben Markowitz owed money to a local dealer named Jesse James Hollywood. Jesse believed Ben was blowing him off, and what started as frustration quickly turned into something more volatile. Jesse wanted control. He wanted leverage. Then he saw it. While driving around with friends, Jesse spotted Ben's 15 year old brother Nick walking alone. Jesse told the driver to pull over and they grabbed Nick, forced into the van, and drove away. Instead of being hurt, Nick was taken to Santa Barbara and absorbed into Jesse's circle. For nearly three days, they partied. Nick was given drugs and alcohol. The atmosphere felt temporary, almost casual. Everyone believed Nick would eventually be taken home. That this was nothing more than a scare tactic. They were wrong. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to hear Holly struggle to explain quantum physics? Then boy do we have a good news for you! This episode is the first in a series of the true, and not true stories that inspired the world of Stranger Things. In this episode we'll cover: The Montauk Monster, Camp Hero, The Philadelphia Experiment/ Project Rainbow, The Montauk Project, and Nina Kulagina the Russian Woman with telekinetic powers. FYI: If you didn't watch the show, don't worry. The stories we are going to explore in this series exist on their own, you don't need to have seen the show to understand or appreciate them. January 20th sits on the calendar like a date with unfinished business. It's the day America permanently changed how presidents leave office, the anniversary of a week when an entire state armed itself against something that left impossible tracks in the snow, and the exact moment a foreign government executed one of the most precisely timed acts of political spite ever recorded. Three stories. One date. None of them end quite the way you'd expect.EPISODE PAGE: https://WeirdDarkness.com/MWD20260120NOTE: Some of this content may have been created with assistance from AI tools, but it has been reviewed, edited, narrated, produced, and approved by Darren Marlar, creator and host of Weird Darkness — who, despite popular conspiracy theories, is NOT an AI voice.WeirdDarkness® is a registered trademark. 3 Terrifying TRUE Stories to Start 2026
Sarah has a new guilty pleasure called Members Only, but she says it's more like Real Housewives of Mar-a-Lago. We hear why she is fascinated by these ladies (and their clothing). We debate the virtues of changing your last name when you get married, and how certificates and diplomas should be amendable if you change your name. We learn the benefits of pet ownership according to science, and whether it is better or worse for your happiness than having children. Susie wants you all to know it is certainly better than having a teenager. Sarah explains, at long last, what the appendix even does and why it's more important than most people realize. And Susie tells the story of her friend who had to have her appendix removed because she tried to beat Cher in a feat of strength. This is a true and hilarious story. And we find out about a device that measures your child's vitals, and can alert parents of an impending temper tantrum, and we hear whether it's effective in preventing or reducing their severity.Brain Candy Podcast Website - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/Brain Candy Podcast Book Recommendations - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/books/Brain Candy Podcast Merchandise - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/candy-store/Brain Candy Podcast Candy Club - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/product/candy-club/Brain Candy Podcast Sponsor Codes - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/support-us/Brain Candy Podcast Social Media & Platforms:Brain Candy Podcast LIVE Interactive Trivia Nights - https://www.youtube.com/@BrainCandyPodcast/streamsBrain Candy Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastHost Susie Meister Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterHost Sarah Rice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBrain Candy Podcast on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodBrain Candy Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/braincandy (JOIN FREE - TONS OF REALITY TV CONTENT)Brain Candy Podcast Sponsors, partnerships, & Products that we love:For 50% off your order, head to https://www.dailylook.com and use code BRAINCANDYGet 60% off your first order, plus free shipping, when you head to https://www.smalls.com/braincandyThis episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Bill Maher sits down with Dana Carvey and David Spade – together – for what feels less like an interview and more like eavesdropping on two flies on the wall… plus Bill. The longtime friends riff on Saturday Night Live war stories, the brutal math of stand-up (bombs, hecklers, benefit shows), and the slightly unhinged psychology of chasing laughs for a living. The conversation zigzags through classic films, old Hollywood, celebrity politics, and the strange new podcast economy. Funny, profane, nostalgic, and sneakily thoughtful – it's three comedy legends talking shop after hours, with no one trying to win the room. Support our Advertisers: -Make hiring a little merrier! Notes and Quotes: “No matter how hard you run, you can't outrun you.” —Mary Marantz “Burnout is not coasting off the side of the road, running out of gas gently. It's 90 miles an hour and then you slam into a brick wall and the transmission falls out. It is a very sudden stop.” —Mary Marantz “Wisdom finally gets a chance to take root because you're just too tired to have these tightly gripped fists anymore.” —Mary Marantz “I've had to learn that lesson over and over again of just how quickly I wilt and wither when I'm not abiding, when I'm not tethered to the vine, when I am just a branch trying to grow fruit on my own. How quickly I struggle in the drought, how quickly I stop bearing fruit when I'm away from the water.” —Mary Marantz Verses: Jeremiah 17:8 John 15:1-17 Related Episodes: GHH Ep 2 – The Beauty of Broken with Elisa Morgan: https://godhearsher.org/podcast/beauty-of-broken/ GHH Ep 69 – Finding Inner Peace with Kay Wills Wyma: https://godhearsher.org/podcast/finding-inner-peace/ GHH Ep 169 – Learning to Surrender with Tara Sun: https://godhearsher.org/podcast/learning-to-surrender/ Links: Mary Marantz's Website: https://marymarantz.com/ God Hears Her website: https://go.odb.org/ghh191 Subscribe to the God Hears Her YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@GodHearsHerODBM

Listen Ad Free! at www.patreon.com/dopeypodcastThis week on Dopey! Dave powers through a music-heavy, emotional episode amid ongoing family grief (Tony's celebration of life tomorrow), delivering sober birthday shoutouts (Jennifer Jimenez 20 years, Janine Coulter 11 years), sponsor love, listener stories, and a historic, in-depth interview with James Frey—his first-ever detailed on-record discussion of pre-sobriety life. Dave opens with a raw acoustic snippet (“Trying to score from the plug today…”), reflects on fame/pressure, plugs sponsors (Oro Recovery, Mountainside, Link Diagnostics, Recovery Unplugged, Orchard on the Brazos), and shares powerful listener submissions: Taylor's 7-OH update (detox → AMA → relapse → QuickMD Suboxone taper + comedy struggles), Oscar (Sweden) on opioid progression to stable methadone, and an anonymous blackout chef tale (insane midnight meals with zero memory, kitchen disasters, one epic hookup dinner). The centerpiece is James Frey's unfiltered hour-plus conversation: childhood rage (ear infections/surgeries → early drinking/fighting), teenage rebellion (“White Boy James” in Benton Harbor bars), college coke dealing, Paris wild years, crack-fueled North Carolina descent, brutal Hazelden wake-up (face destroyed at 23), and Taoism as his lifelong sobriety anchor (meditation, renunciation, balance over 12-step dogma). He details writing A Million Little Pieces (addict rhythm, artistic defiance, no quotation marks), the explosive Oprah-fueled fame/backlash (“punk outlaw” pedestal → villain), and ongoing battles (suicidal ideation, rage, hockey fights). ALL THAT and MORE MORE MORE on this weeks super fucking robust episode of that good old dopey show. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. While horror movies are usually a fun escape into a fictional parallel world, some are rooted in real events even more disturbing than any film's plot line. The Conjuring 3 is one such movie, based on the real life murder trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson in 1981. But was Arne really paranormally possessed? Time for Rory and Kit to investigate! Bill sits down with award-buzzed actor Joel Edgerton for a sharp, funny, and moving conversation that jumps from Hollywood absurdities to deeply personal truths. They dig into Edgerton's career-defining performance in Train Dreams, and why stories about ordinary people, loss, and resilience can hit harder than any superhero spectacle. Edgerton opens up about early struggles and the love that carried him through, while Maher shares a bizarre first “job” as an unqualified bodyguard for a South African diplomat's kids. Along the way, they talk about how Australian actors seem to be quietly running Hollywood—and that most American accents these days were probably learned in Sydney watching Leave It to Beaver.
