A practical guide to Wolf Precision's Level 1–3 builds, Gen-4 ACE with BAT actions, and the new prosumer gunsmithing path. In Episode 251, Jamie Dodson breaks down Wolf Precision's new three-level path for owning a custom ACE-based rifle—designed to save you money, build real skills, and put world-class performance in your hands. Level 1 (Core Kit): all core components minus the trigger, with training to assemble, maintain, and swap calibers/barrels yourself. Level 2 (Assembled Minus One): a fully assembled rifle minus the trigger (two pins and done), perfect for first-timers who want a correct baseline before learning maintenance. Level 3 (Range-Ready): a complete Wolf Precision custom rifle—optics mounted, zeroed, and ready to perform. Jamie explains why we pair the Gen-4 ACE with BAT Machine receivers (Igniter, VR, TR, Bumblebee, Vampire, Vesper, and more): consistency, perfect headspace, and true repeatability. You'll also hear about the upcoming Prosumer Gunsmithing School (online and in-person Armory sessions), live ACE install demos planned for SHOT Show 2026 and the Great American Outdoor Show, and why paying $10–15K for a rifle isn't a prerequisite for excellence. Sponsors: Krieger Barrels (check Krieger Direct) and TriggerTech (simple, safe, two-pin install). If you've ever wanted to say "I built it," this episode shows you how. 0:00 - 2 Nuggets games, 2 Avs games, 4 wins this weekend. A Quadruple Diparoo Winaroo. Right now, the Broncos, Avalanche, and Nuggets are all in (or rapidly approaching) a championship window. Make no mistake. This is the best era of Denver sports, period. No question. Top to bottom, this is the best all-around time to be a Denver sports fan. 15:03 - Chase Daniel and Colin Cowherd are Sean Payton's boys. We know this. It's been well documented. Now, both those guys are starting to publicly doubt/criticize Bo Nix. Hmmm...if we're reading the tea leaves here...did Sean put out the Bat signal to his boys? Tell everyone the Broncos struggles are because of Bo, not his playcalling. The heel turn feels a bit fishy...35:34 - Another Buffs game, another Deion game mismanagement blunder. We seem to get one of these every week. But, Vic isn't worried about it. His biggest takeaway from the game had nothing to do with Deion.

Like broadcasts and broadcasters of the early days, the 1992 Simpsons episode, Homer at the Bat, shaped the lives of millions. It made people laugh, it connected people more deeply with their favorite sports heroes by humanizing these mythical figures, and it instilled a deeper curiosity for those on the periphery of the game. If you're a fan of the Simpsons and baseball, there are many great stories about the making of this episode you won't want to miss.

In a BaT Podcast first that we'd love to make a regular feature, four of the crew gather at HQ to hash out one of our collective favorite car movies: none other, of course, than 1968's Bullitt with Steve McQueen. The crew start by establishing their various McQueen bona fides and history with the movie before talking about the evasive nature of the plot (and what, in fact, that plot might be); filming and financing details; background car spotting; San Francisco landmarks, both here and gone; razor sharp jaws; the sleep-inducing sections; regenerating hubcaps; the Lalo Schifrin score (or lack thereof, in key places); and of course, the most famous car chase in the movies. But they don't stop there - this movie has a lot more to cover, like several unintentional car stunts; Mopar-on-camera violence; gun-toting styles of late-'60s movie detectives; the film's sartorial choices; homages in later movies; and which of those movies should make it onto the list of future podcast subjects. Friend of the show and Patreon backer Matt McThorn is back this week, and he wanted to return to one of is earlier themes, with three more stories featuring Thomas Blake, the Bat rogue known as Catman. We get a 90s story featuring Catman and Ratcatcher from before Catman turned super cool under the pen of Gail Simone. Then we see Blake meet Huntress and try to come off as suave in a Birds of Prey vs. the Secret Six story. And we wrap up with Catman and Bane in Gotham during Battle for the Cowl, trying really hard to honor the memory of Batman. It goes about as well as you'd expect. We are back! Had big plans for Spooky Season this year but health, vehicle nonsense, family, and general exhaustion at the state of things in the US had other plans. It was an absolute pleasure talking with Clark Collis about his new book Screaming and Conjuring on the last episode and to follow it up we've brought back an incredible guest and we're diving back into the work of one of the undisputed Masters of Horror™. A few years ago we covered Romero's debut film and foundational masterpiece The Night of the Living Dead with Filmspotting's Josh Larsen. Romero's Dead movies are something we'd like to revisit sometime here at The Substance but today we're looking at a long hidden gem from early in his career that only recently became widely available, The Amusement Park.Commissioned by The Lutheran Society of Western Pennsylvania as a PSA on the perils of aging in America (especially as a non wealthy White), Romero decided to boldly make the project his own and instead of an after school special with talking heads discussing the difficulties that our senior neighbors face, he turned in something surreal and terrifying. With minimal dialogue the film conjures up the horrors of aging in an individualistic capitalist society: steep economic cost, difficulties with transportation, not being taken seriously by the general public, red tape accessing medical care, predatory assisted living facilities, and more. It's not a fun time but it's a visceral experience and one that stirs up questions worth asking related to what we owe to our more elderly neighbors. And we are delighted to be joined by Dale_A from the Bat & Spider podcast. Next time we have him back for something more uplifting!Substantive Cinema ListShoutouts:John Carpenter soundtracksTrue Indie by Don CoscarelliBat & Spider Episode #250 Phantasm ExtravaganzaOne Cut of the DeadFollow Dale:InstagramBat and Spider PodcastFollow Us:InstagramThreadsPhilip's LetterboxdBlueSkyShare Your Questions/Suggestions/Feedback With Us:Email: thesubstancepod@gmail.comDM on InstagramSupport Us: Support the show with an individual donation on CashApp to $TheSubstancePod or become a monthly Patreon supporter at patreon.com/TheSubstancePod

There's arguably no superhero in existence that has been reimagined, redefined, or reinterpreted more than Batman. No matter how many times he's been rebooted, audiences are always willing to come back to Gotham City's greatest defender. With so much Bat content out there, there's plenty to dissect, analyze, and of course, rank! This podcast is dedicated to a surgical evaluation of Batman's history, with a focus on ranking several topics in the world of Batman, among other classic Bat themes and characters.Join hosts Daniel Cohen, Pop Break's former Film Editor, and Kris Ingersoll, co-host of the Media/Lit podcast, as they bring on several guests every month to share their passion for the one and only Dark Knight. From Adam West to Robert Pattinson, no bat stone will be left unturned. Bottom-line: If you're a Batman fan, this is required listening. As 2025 nears the end, so does the year of World's Finest, our yearlong celebration of Superman! But don't worry, we have two big Superman rankings episodes left, including this one. It's time we pay respect to Superman's foes – it's our ranking of the Superman cinematic villains! While not as robust as Batman's rogue gallery of film villains, no doubt there have been plenty of iconic Superman villain performances throughout the years. To help Daniel and Kris count down this super villain list are return guests Aaron Sarnecky of the Anniversary Brothers Podcast, and fresh off our last episode taking Peacemaker, Bill George, host of the Should I Go See It Podcast. The crew discuss a plethora of Lex Luthors, General Zods, and of course, Ross Webster! Speaking of Ross Webster, listen to Daniel speak glowingly about…Superman III?!?! Yup. It happened. You'll find all this and more on another GREAT rankings episode!

"Santa Clarita Diet" was a dark comedy series that aired on Netflix from 2017-2019. The show starred Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant as suburban realtors Sheila and Joel Hammond, whose quiet California life gets flipped on its head when Sheila mysteriously transforms into an undead, flesh-craving zombie. Instead of leaning into horror tropes, the show mined humor from the couple's desperate attempts to keep their family and careers intact while hiding the fact that Mom is now snacking on human remains. Critics praised the sharp writing and the show's ability to balance over-the-top gore with genuine sweetness. Netflix controversially canceled "Santa Clarita Diet" in 2019 without resolving its story. Since then, it's earned cult-favorite status among viewers. Is this one as finger licking good as it sounds? Listen as the S1E1 boys sink their teeth into the pilot episode, "So Then a Bat or a Monkey". Starring: Drew Barrymore, Timothy Olyphant, Liv Hewson, Skyler Gisondo, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Richard T. With so much of Canada in the throes of baseball fever, it seems only right that we share this, the most famous of all poems about the sport. Written by Ernest Thayer, "Casey at the Bat" promises not to go into extra innings, but with a brief meditation and then gentle waves – the ocean kind, not in the stands - we promise to usher you into sweet sleep. The Portland Bureau of Transportation--or PBOT--is spending tens of millions to convert miles of a four-lane state highway, known as 82nd avenue, into a two-lane neighborhood street and busway.TriMet is headed for a contentious decision November 7th to put 82nd Ave on a major “Road Diet,” cut motorist capacity in half, and replace car lanes with BAT lanes for bikes and transit. It all started three years ago when ODOT transferred the Portland section of 82nd to PBOT, who began spending millions on a scheme to “build a better 82nd avenue.”PBOT's overarching vision—for 82nd and others—means converting state highways to busways by reducing lanes, adding barriers, punishing motorists with gridlock, and calling it progress. It's part of Portland's “Transportation System Plan” that envisions walking, bicycling, transit, and shared vehicles for 70 percent of Portland. Their “strategy for people movement” literally does not include personal vehicles. When Metro, PBOT, and TriMet meet--a rabble of bike activists, lawyers, and Democratic Socialists plan to make a showing and demand more miles of dedicated BAT lanes for buses and bikes on state highways.Oregon motorists make up 90 percent of 82nd avenue users. They're busy living their lives—not attending PBOT meetings. This time, when TriMet meets on November 7th – let them hear from you. Submit a public comment and tell them to remove BAT lanes from further consideration.

Given her work in and around cinema, it's no surprise that Stephanie LaCava would write a novel that is, no small feat, cinematic. Said novel is Nymph, a slim and elliptical and fully satisfying character piece about a young woman, Bathory––called “Bat” for short––whose parents' strange lifestyle, either involving spy craft or assassinations or just being out-and-out weirdos, brings her down dark corners. Having known Stephanie for a little bit, I already knew she was worth talking to. (An important quality for any podcast guest.) But when she sent me the book last month, I read it with enough speed and relish that it was no question we should talk about Nymph, the Chantal Akerman and Abel Ferrara films that inspired it, and the complex personal feelings these things can raise. While I hope you like our conversation, I mostly hope it drives one to reading Stephanie's novel. Alex and Beck sit down to catch up with Matt Schiller, CEO of Snappr—the professional-photos-anywhere agency that supports our BaT Plus listing photography service. The Australian Bay Area transplant talks about starting the company in Sydney with no intention of moving into the automotive space; assures us that even CEOs have excuses for looking at BaT instead of working; reviews the importance of accurate and numerous photos for large purchases made over the internet; and goes into some very telling stats gleaned from Snappr's seven-year relationship with BaT (the numbers don't lie: better photos sell more cars for higher prices!).The trio talk about the importance of keeping AI out of automotive sales photography, and also keeping a creator in the loop when using generative AI for non-automotive applications. All three are pilots at various levels, so fair warning: the tail(dragger) end of the conversation descends quickly into airplane madness.Links for things mentioned in this episode:37:10 Aircraft and related auctions on BaTGot suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community or One Year Garage episode? Brave has spent a decade building a privacy-first browser that empowers users with tools like ad-blocking and fingerprinting protection, now serving 100 million monthly active users. Security engineer Kyle Den Hartog joins Friederike to unpack the centralization traps in digital identity from email's spam-driven dominance to one-size-fits-all DeFi lending rates and how Brave counters them with BAT's user-rewarding ad model, zero-knowledge personalization, and wallets that act as privacy guardians. Kyle warns of on-chain transparency's risks to consumer behavior, advocates for intent-based "vendor relationship management" advertising, and draws historical lessons on censorship's chilling effects amid rising regulations like EU chat controls.
