This week, Alex and Randy begin with a frank look at the Deville Debacle of the weekend before last and have a discussion about how we handle major issues and mistakes as a company. It's a new King's speech with writer Tom King We open with breaking ground on the big screen. Tom King talks about the upcoming Supergirl movie and how his Eisner-winning comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow became the creative DNA for the film. In Trinity, Tom breaks down the core idea behind the series—using time travel not as a gimmick, but as a way to finally let Wonder Woman's daughter Lizzie truly know her father. Through fractured timelines and lived-in moments, Lizzie comes to understand Steve Trevor not as a legend or a memory, but as a man. It's personal, it's intfilm, imate, and it reframes the Trinity legacy in a way that sticks. We also widen the lens and talk Wonder Woman herself—what she represents now, what she's always represented, and why writing her requires a different emotional frequency than almost any other character in comics. And yes—we go there. Tom is candid about his lingering regret in the Bat-corner of the DC Universe: Alfred Pennyworth is still gone, and Tom reflects on the weight of that decision, the permanence of death in superhero storytelling, and how it continues to haunt his run on Batman. This is a thoughtful, honest, and creative deep dive—less about plot mechanics, more about legacy, consequence, and emotion.

This week we're putting a modern twist on everybody's favorite game: The One Year Garage is visiting the fresh, dewy, barely sentient year of 2026 to see what of its offerings might strike the fancy of the diehard old-car obsessives on our panel. Spoiler alert: there are strongly held opinions, some of which are not the same as yours. Along the way, they also cover Tekashi 6ix9ine; hypercar ignorance; the cost of modern car ownership; when 2014 still means "new"; auto show nostalgia; Fiero dreams; DRS on a "street car"; (good) weird small cars; non-metallic snarkiness; exotic e-bikes; Dakar semis; a far-off Scout fantasy; gigantic vehicles with gobs of power; going solo in a Sterrato; Morgan snarkiness; and a general unease with the new car industry. For those unfamiliar, the rules of One Year Garage are simple: each of our contestants, round-robin-style, pick a vehicle for every one of five categories: Sports Car, Daily Driver, Family Hauler, Truck/4x4, and Wild Card. All picks must be (or will theoretically be) available during the 2026 model year. Once a particular car has been picked, it can't be picked again. Self-doubt is encouraged, and judgment must be passed on others' choices. Arguments about what belongs in a certain category are expected. And the group must accidentally leave out at least one important option, the absence of which must raise the ire of a minimum of two people on Instagram. Enjoy! This special episode commemorates the 60th anniversary of the groundbreaking ABC television series Batman, the pop-culture lightning bolt that turned comic books into primetime spectacle and permanently rewired how superheroes could be portrayed on screen. I share a couple of professional and personal encounters with "The Bright Knight" But, at the heart of the episode is a rare 2016 interview with the late, great Adam West, recorded not long before his passing. West reflects candidly on stepping into the cape and cowl, navigating the razor-thin line between sincerity and satire, and why playing Batman seriously—even when the world was laughing—was the key to the show's success. He discusses:How the series embraced comic-book logic without mocking itThe cultural shockwave of Batmania in the 1960sThe unexpected responsibility of becoming Batman to generations of fansWhy the role followed him for life—and why he ultimately embraced that legacyThis episode isn't just a celebration of a TV show. It's a tribute to an era, a performance, and a philosophy of heroism that proved Batman could be smart, strange, colorful, and iconic—all at the same time. Six decades later, the Bat-signal still shines. And Adam West is a big reason why.

At TriMet's December board meeting, director Tyler Frisbee lectured attendees on how 82nd Avenue business owners and motorists should embrace TriMet's takeover of auto lanes for exclusive busways.TriMet refers to these as Business Access Transit or BAT lanes—which is Orwell's doublespeak for the opposite effect—reducing business access for people in cars. Portland Bureau of Transportation's alleged “improvement” of 82nd only turns a street made for cars into an avenue for the minority of pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders.82nd is another flagship for how PBOT intends to “improve” more streets -- by taking away auto lanes to be re-striped as “bus-only” lanes. Traffic modeling shows, of course, this will greatly distress peak-hour travel times by 50 percent and divert motorists to I-205.TriMet's 72 bus line will be the only beneficiary of this change. A bus that runs every 12 minutes during peak hours, means BAT lanes will be unused most of the time while motorists eye an empty lane, confined to Los Angeles style gridlock.TriMet and PBOT are moving towards a likely February decision on the BAT lanes -- and many business owners have threatened legal action for loss of access to their shops.Director Frisbee, meanwhile, took 10 minutes to make unsubstantiated assertions, to which Cascade's President, John Charles, has written a response you can read at cascadepolicy.org. Like an evangelist, Tyler Frisbee pleas for Portlanders to repent from their car-centric ways and embrace the narrow vision of PBOT's Transportation System Plan -- whose tenets are known as “Vision Zero:” Stop designing roads around people in cars to make driving more painful, and convert major roads into avenues for walking, bicycling, and public transit. At the February meeting, the TriMet Board should withdraw this idea and end its war on the majority of people in cars.

They regale us with some of their favorite or otherwise notable listings from throughout the year, and along the way talk about Howard as a secret Corvette guy; the glory of the Mazdaspeed Protege and its predecessors; the Valentine One (and related bad advice from Howard); and key value differences between the beginning and end of 2025.Also discussed: a rare glimpse into curation regrets; alphanumeric Lambo soup; going from one first world problem to the next (some of which involve virus-related emergency roadside stops); teasers for upcoming BaT events; a mutual yearning to get back out on track; and resurrecting Crashgate 2008.Links for things mentioned in this episode:1:42 Original-Owner 2003 Mazda Mazdaspeed Protegé2:22 Mazda Protegé MP3 Car and Driver First Drive3:02 In Memory of Mike Valentine, a Pioneer of the Radar Detector Industry Car and Driver5:29 Lot #50,000: 2008 Bugatti Veyron 16.45:56 Lot #10,000: 1956 Porsche 356A Carrera GS Coupe7:19 Porsche 911 GT3 RS and Touring search pages7:27 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG model page7:48 2022 Bugatti Chiron Super Sport Sold for USD $4,000,0007:54 20-Years-Owned 1953 Chevrolet Corvette Sold for USD $371,0008:34 1986 Porsche 962C Sold for USD $1,249,6208:36 1990 AAR-Toyota Eagle HF89 Sold for USD $1,400,0009:00 1993 Jaguar XJ220-N Sold for USD $691,2349:02 Ex–Car and Driver Twin-Engine 1984 Honda CR-X² Sold for USD $41,4019:06 Ex–Paul Walker 2005 Ford GT Sold for USD $627,0009:21 392 Hemi Stroker-Powered 1930 Ford Model A “Wade Coupe” 4-Speed Sold for USD $98,5009:44 Ex–Cormac McCarthy 1998 Ferrari F355 GTS Sold for USD $108,3559:53 Neon Porcelain Dairy Queen Sign Sold for USD $21,00010:08 Porsche 918 Spyder model page10:10 Singer DLS search page10:13 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS Sold for USD $2,375,00010:23 2010 Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale Zagato Sold for USD $600,55610:45 Blu Elettrico 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari Sold for USD $4,475,00010:55 17k-Kilometer 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet 6-Speed11:37 Widebody 2021 Rolls-Royce Cullinan Black Badge Neon Nights Edition Sold for USD $310,00011:59 2026 Corvette ZR-1 search page13:20 Sahara Beige 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Sold for USD $106,50013:45 Parts and Automobilia category page13:48 Sega Ferrari F355 Challenge Arcade Game Sold for USD $20,00013:55 F Racer F40-Style Junior Go-Kart Sold for GBP £16,00014:01 L'Autopède Bus Ride & Power Car Go-Kart Sold for USD $21,50014:21 Parts and Automobilia – Racing Simulators model page15:58 1971 Triumph Spitfire Mk IV Project Sold for USD $10016:04 2006 Ferrari F430 Spider Chassis Sold for USD $2,00616:43 1995 BMW M3 AC Schnitzer ACS3 CLS Sold for USD $188,00018:16 1918 Henderson Four Model H Sold for USD $141,00018:21 1920 Ace Four Sold for USD $147,00020:01 2014 Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Coupe 6-Speed Sold for USD $235,00020:28 Lamborghini Murcielago Coupe 6-Speed search page21:29 10k-Mile 2006 Subaru Baja Turbo Sold for USD $55,55521:35 Volvo V70R model page23:13 Ford GT Mk II Race Car search page23:30 1964 Bill Thomas Cheetah Cro-Sal Special Roadster Sold for USD $415,00024:12 1983 Toyota Tercel SR5 4WD 6-Speed Sold for USD $7,80024:37 Toyota Tercel model page47:53 Michael Richards' 2004 Mercedes-Benz S500 Sold for USD $24,444Got suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community, One Year Garage episode, or (B)aT the Movies subject? You might think about bats as flitting around in the dark and hunting insects, but some species feed on fruits or flowers—and play an important role as pollinators. One place that role is crucial is in the relationship between bats and agave plants. Bat conservationist Kristen Lear joins Host Ira Flatow to describe efforts to restore agaves in the Southwest and Mexico, which has consequences for bats, for the ecosystems around the agave, and for your liquor cabinet, since agave is the source of drinks like tequila and mezcal.Plus, journalist Dan Fagin joins Ira to discuss his recent New York Times article on a new technology that is letting researchers follow individual monarch butterflies over the course of a thousand-mile migration. Guests:Dr. Kristen Lear is director of the Agave Restoration Initiative at Bat Conservation International, based in Austin, Texas.Dan Fagin is a science journalist and the director of the Science, Health & Environmental Reporting Program at New York University.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com.
