Molly Arbuthnott Brings Heart, Craft, and Children's Literature Wisdom to Comic Crusaders Comic Crusaders is thrilled to welcome Molly Arbuthnott to the show, an award-winning author, teacher, editor, and academic from Scotland whose work proves that children's literature is anything but small. Public bios and her official site describe a creative career built around storytelling, education, workshops, books, audio, and direct engagement with young readers and aspiring authors. Molly's journey stands out because she has experience across multiple lanes of the storytelling world. She has taught in classrooms, built books from personal inspiration, developed interactive reading sessions for schools and nurseries, and expanded her work into audiobook and screen-adjacent storytelling. Her official site also highlights workshops that combine story readings, sounds, activities, Q&A, and follow-on educational materials, showing that her work is not simply about publishing a book but creating a memorable literary experience. During this conversation, Al Mega and Molly explore the leap from teaching to authorship, the truth about traditional publishing versus self-publishing, how stories shaped by real life can still feel magical, and why children's books matter so deeply in a distracted age. They also discuss collaboration with illustrators, marketing strategies for authors, how to connect with readers through school outreach, and the exciting process of developing work beyond the printed page. Molly's current public-facing creative world includes books such as Eamonn the Bat, ongoing school visits, her "My Favourite Books" podcast presence, and an animation premiere linked to Oscar the Ferry Cat. That mix of literary passion and practical execution makes this episode especially valuable for authors who need both inspiration and strategy. This episode is a reminder that stories are not passive things. In the right hands, they become tools for empathy, courage, learning, and joy. Molly Arbuthnott is building exactly that kind of work, and this interview is packed with insight for anyone trying to turn imagination into impact. Predictable cash flow is the whole game. In cannabis, predictable is the one thing almost nobody has. This lecture discusses the 20th century Analytic philosopher, Thomas Nagel's essay "What Is It Like To Be A Bat", and focuses upon the "speculative proposal" Nagel ends the article with, namely that of developing a more objective "phenomenology" which would perhaps allow greater clarity and precision to be given to descriptions of the experiences of "what it is like to be a . . . Peter and Eden run through a rapid-fire list of pop culture hot takes covering movies, TV, music, books, and games. The Star Wars watch order debate kicks things off (original trilogy only for Peter, release order for Eden), Eden defends Batman & Robin and F-Boy Island as unironically great, both agree the Beatles are played out, and they end on a shared appreciation for Alpha Centauri as the peak of the Civilization franchise.Show NotesWhat Eden's Been IntoK-pop roundup: LE SSERAFIM's new album, aespa's Lemonade LP, and ITZY's Motto EP (featuring solo tracks from each member)Reading: The web novel Long Awaited Feelings (1,900 pages about a woman who time-travels after her death) and rereading How Do We Relationship? (completed 14-volume yuri romance manga — "the best romance comic I've ever read")Games: Finished PowerWash Simulator (excited for the Star Wars DLC), played Loddlenaut (cute 5-hour pixel-art ocean cleanup game), and the Wuthering Waves x Cyberpunk: Edgerunners crossover eventWhat Peter's Been IntoDiablo 4: Finished the Vessel of Hatred campaign as a Warlock ("killing demons by summoning your own demons is a good time")Reading: 82% through Anji Kills a King by Evan Leikam (BookTuber debut from Tor) — enjoying it but struggling with the prickly protagonistMusic: New Khemmis self-titled album (Denver doom metal), Cult of Luna's new single "In the Shadow of Your Shadow" (album out November), and The Ocean's "Light Pollution" from upcoming Solaris — allaying fears after the post-Holocene lineup changeHot Takes — MoviesStar Wars watch order: Peter says 4, 5, 6 + maybe Rogue One, skip everything else. Eden says release order (4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, Rogue One) to preserve cultural/historical contextEden defends Batman & Robin: "It's the second best Batman movie. George Clooney's a bad Batman, he's got nipples on the Batsuit, he's got the Bat credit card — it's great."Eden declares Saving Private Ryan a bad movie to the horror of everyone at the comic book shopBest Pixar: Eden picks Ratatouille (doesn't like most Pixar). Peter picks The IncrediblesCorrect max runtime: 90 minutes (Eden) vs 120 minutes (Peter) — anything longer needs to earn itSequel that's better: Peter says Captain America: Winter Soldier > First Avenger. Eden says Tokyo Drift is the best Fast & Furious movieCitizen Kane: Eden concedes it's the rare masterpiece that actually earns its reputation — a bunch of first-time filmmakers who didn't know the rulesHot Takes — TVShows that stayed too long: The Simpsons (Peter). Nearly every comedy past season 3 (Eden)Best series finale: M*A*S*H's "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen" and Babylon 5 (Eden). Brooklyn 99 (Peter)Worst series finale: Battlestar Galactica (new) — "the most incomprehensible finale you'll ever watch" (Eden). Seinfeld (Peter)Reality TV worth defending: F-Boy Island — 24 guys, half are "nice guys" and half are fuckboys, the women pick, and the fuckboys can steal the $100k at the end. Nice guys get a villa; fuckboys get a literal prison camp on the beachAdult animation vs prestige drama: Eden says Bob's Burgers is the only good adult animation show right now. Prestige TV is in a nadir of expensive Game of Thrones clonesHot Takes — MusicNever need to hear again: The entire Beatles discography (both agree)Best decade by genre: 80s for rock/pop, 90s for alt, aughts for indie, right now for K-pop (Eden). 2010s for metal — the genre found its stride again after a grim 90s (Peter)Bands that should have stopped: Dream Theater after Awake (Eden). Opeth's last 15 years are all misses (Eden). Peter agrees on bothGreatest live album: Rush — Exit...Stage Left (Peter). The Bang on a Can recording of Terry Riley's In C (Eden — "the finest version I've ever seen")Albums > playlists: Both firmly team albums. Eden has a 16-hour "K-pop Brain Rot" playlist for shuffling, but that's the exceptionHot Takes — BooksAudiobooks = reading? Leans yes from both, but acknowledges the research is contradictory (small sample sizes, brain scan studies on both sides)E-readers vs physical: Peter goes digital 9 times out of 10 (lighter, portable, side-lit). Eden does physical for comics, e-books for prose (form factor matters less for text, but hates reading comics on a screen)Hot Takes — GamesFavorite game of all time: Mass Effect 2 (Peter — tighter gameplay than ME1, loyalty missions, assembling the crew). Doom (1993) (Eden — infinitely replayable with new WADs every day, nothing feels as fluid)Best console generation: Xbox 360 / PS3 era (both) — Halo 3 LAN parties, Gears of War couch co-op, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Fallout 3/NV, Viva Piñata, and yes, Sneak KingOpen world vs linear: Both prefer a tight 20-hour experience over a 100-hour open worldFranchise that peaked early: Age of Empires II (Peter — nothing since comes close). And Eden's shitpost answer of the day: Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is better than every Civilization game that came...
This lecture discusses the 20th century Analytic philosopher, Thomas Nagel's essay "What Is It Like To Be A Bat", and focuses upon one of the key points Nagel makes in his criticisms of reductionist projects aimed at explaining mind entirely in physical terms, namely that in order to make the deceptively clear "is" or "are" involved in those putative identifications make sense, what is required is some sort of coherent and robust theoretical scheme explaining how the mental can be reduced to the physical. At the present time, that simply isn't available to us, so those sorts of identifications amount to hand-waving. Batı'nın sömürgecilik (kolonizasyon) mantığı basittir: Gittiğin coğrafyanın yer altı kaynaklarını çek al, dilini unuttur, dinini değiştir, geride kendine bağımlı bir elit tabaka bırak ve onlar vasıtasıyla ülkeyi yönet. Bize okulda “kâşif” diye yutturulan Macellan, Vasco da Gama, Kristof Kolomb gibilerinin silahla ve her türlü şiddetle ele geçirip sömürgeleştirdikleri ülkeleri bekleyen kader buydu.
This lecture discusses the 20th century Analytic philosopher, Thomas Nagel's essay "What Is It Like To Be A Bat", and focuses upon Nagel's analysis of one way that a person who acknowledges that we cannot imagine or conceptualize the subjective experience of a bat might try to get around that, by appealing to more objective concepts and facts about the organs, body, and brain of the bat. He notes that this doesn't yield us the subjective experience and we are not even sure how to correlate the subjective and objective characters of matters like this, including how the human mind is supposed to be connected with or reducible to the human brain. This week we have a full house for our next movie installment: Beck, Tyler, and Cam join Alex to talk about the joys and pains of 2000's Nic Cage vehicle Gone in 60 Seconds, and the 1974 cult film of the same name that loosely inspired it. The crew discuss how each of them came to the movie (or both, as the case may be); expose their divides of opinion early; wantonly throw around the term "masterpiece"; marvel at the huge budget divide between the old and new films, just one of the many massive differences; lament the painfully cringey car dialogue; discuss fair payment for a job done; differentiate between "nighttime" and "hot time"; and confess to some Eleanor-based confusion. And then, on to the cars. What perspective has 26 years of hindsight given us on which cars got boosted and which didn't? How was no one worried about security in a circa-2000 Ferrari warehouse? Where does the modern move sit in the pantheon of films involving car chases in the LA River. Exactly how bad was CGI in 2000? Our rowdy group of cig-rippin' drug-thievin' miscreants closes by talking about Angelina's hair, other elements that don't hold up, and some of their favorite cars in both movies.Got suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community or an idea for our next game episode? Let us know at podcast@bringatrailer.com!
Bat tracking metrics can be very overwhelming BUT they are a big and important part of the game. Baseball Savant recently dropped a new evolution of bat tracking metrics which includes at least 6 new metrics. Between missed timing and missed distances, Mike Petriello joins the show to discuss how these metrics can change the game.

This lecture discusses the 20th century Analytic philosopher, Thomas Nagel's essay "What Is It Like To Be A Bat", and focuses upon he portion of his article in which he begins to explore what subjective experience of other species would be and whether we have the capacity to imagine or understand what it is like to be to be that animal. He selects bats in particular since they are mammals but have a very different sensorium from us, in that they rely upon echolocation and have weak eyesight. This lecture discusses the 20th century Analytic philosopher, Thomas Nagel's essay "What Is It Like To Be A Bat", and focuses upon the first part of the article, in which Nagel raises a number of general problems for adopting a physicalist reductionist analysis of mind to resolve the mind-body problem by explaining conscious experience in terms of something non-mental, e.g. the brain. Rochester Red Wings General Manager Dan Mason stops by in the studio as the Wings are in a playoff push with pennant fever.
Executive transitions are more fragile than most people assume. 40% of executive appointments fail within the first 18 months, not because of technical incompetence, but because of people, politics, and culture. And yet organisations continue to spend 90% of their budget on selection, and only 10% on supporting the executive once they are in the role. In this episode, we speak with Navid Nazemian about what actually goes wrong, and what a more deliberate approach to transition looks like.We discuss why the skills that get you hired into the C-suite are rarely the ones that determine whether you succeed, what Marshall Goldsmith’s “what got you here won’t get you there” really means in practice, and why vertical development (expanding how you think, not just what you know) matters more than most executives realise. Navid also walks us through his Double Diamond Framework©, a seven-phase approach to executive transitions spanning twelve to eighteen months. We touch on the pre-onboarding phase, stakeholder mapping, and why phases one and seven (the ones that bookend the entire journey) are almost always the first to get skipped. Our Guest: Navid Nazemian Navid Nazemian is the world’s #1 executive coach, ranked by CEO Today three years running, and the international bestselling author of Mastering Executive Transitions. A former global HR leader at Vodafone, Roche, and BAT, he has coached 350+ executives across five countries — more than half of them CEOs. This one is something special. We have absolute legend of the animation and comicbook world, who has written episodes of Flash Gordon, Dungeons & Dragons, He-Man, Transformers, Star Wars: Ewoks, Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, Batman: The Animated Series, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Lost, Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, PAUL DINI!Paul gives us the story of his career from starting at Filmation straight out of college, being one of the only people in the world working on Star Wars when it was dormant in 1986, all the way to inventing Harley Quinn. This week Alex and Randy go over all their recent favorites from the site, talking along the way about a heavy-breathing Fairlane, the terrible-or-terrific teals of the early '90s, a bullet-riddled Jeep, a raft of special Z-cars, and one of our favorite sellers. They take a lengthy detour into oddball induction setups before returning to the special Cunningham race car on the site, which prompts memories of Alex's traumatic childhood visit to The Briggs Cunningham Automotive Museum.Next, assumed clone status; missing a Rallye in Tahoe; a brief review of '80s box flares, followed by an about-face to perhaps the curviest car ever made; a solid parking lot scene on taco night; fulfilling a 60-year dream for Alex's dad; a visit to Charlie Goodman's place; Randy's upcoming pod episode with Rob Fisher ahead of our appearance at the Hillsborough Concours, the longest-running event of its kind in California; our July gathering at the Rose Cup at PIR (also the location of the first-ever BaT event); and this summer's BaT sponsorship of the vintage weekend festivities in Elkhart Lake.Follow along! Avrupa nereye gidiyor? Dünya nereye gidiyor? Gülener Kırnalı sordu, Ahmet İnsel yanıtladı. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today we are delighted to share an episode from our colleagues on “The Ezra Klein Show,” originally published on March 31. Ezra interviewed author Michael Pollan, whose best-selling books include “The Omnivore's Dilemma,” “In Defense of Food,” and “How to Change Your Mind.” Pollan's latest book, “A World Appears: A Journey Into Consciousness,” came out earlier this year. It's an exploration of what consciousness is, and the book is — as our review put it — “highly pleasurable to read.” Mentioned in the episode: “The Descriptive Experience Sampling method” by Russell T. Hurlburt and Sarah A. Akhter “What Is It Like to Be a Bat?” by Thomas Nagel The Hidden Spring by Mark Solms Descartes' Error by Antonio Damasio “The Oxford Handbook of Spontaneous Thought” by Kalina Christoff and Kieran C.
