From 2010- we speak with William Kuhn about his book "Reading Jackie: Her Autobiography in Books." The book closely examines a chapter of Jackie Kennedy Onassis's life that is often glossed over in biographies of her- the years she spent as a book editor. We're replaying this in honor of Women's History Month.
Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss one of the major figures in Victorian British politics. Disraeli (1804 -1881) served both as Prime Minister twice and, for long periods, as leader of the opposition. Born a Jew, he was only permitted to enter Parliament as his father had him baptised into the Church of England when he was twelve. Disraeli was a gifted orator and, outside Parliament, he shared his views widely through several popular novels including Sybil or The Two Nations, which was to inspire the idea of One Nation Conservatism. Dr. William Kuhn (a former English professor at Carthage College) talks about his latest book, "Swimming with Lord Byron," which examines the life and career of this celebrated writer with particular focus on Lord Byron's colorful personal life and complicated sexual identity. (Lord Byron was something of a gay icon even during his lifetime- and very much since.)
William Kuhn talks about his first novel, "Mrs Queen Takes the Train," which imagines a remarkable day in which Queen Elizabeth II wanders off of the palace grounds by herself and experiences something of an adventure in the 'outside world.' The novel was published ten years ago, but is still doing well. It recently attracted its 1000th customer review on Amazon.

Author and historian William Kuhn discusses his recently published satirical war novel, a lighthearted work of fiction that recounts Prince Harry’s wartime experiences in Afghanistan. In particular, a big bravo to William Kuhn for considering the former First Lady in a context that (a) has nothing to with her husbands, and (b) brings fresh perspective. Jackie's post-“Camelot” years–namely, her marriage to Onassis and her publishing career–are often given short shrift, but Reading Jackie: Her Autobiography in Books (Anchor Books, 2011) steps in to fill the later gap and it's downright revelatory. What we read reveals much about who we are. That's the idea behind Reading Jackie and it seems simple enough. But, in viewing Jackie Onassis's life through the lens of the books she edited, Kuhn produces something quite sophisticated- a nuanced portrait of a thwarted artist for whom reading was a vital means of participating in the art world. As Kuhn writes: “That sense early on of what she could not do was at the nub of Jackie's self-image as a reader. Coupled with the sense of limitation was a determination to work around it, to participate in the creative and artistic activity that gripped her imagination.” It's a daring approach and more than a little meta –to write a biography examining a series of books with the claim that they comprise the biographical subject's autobiography– but Kuhn more than pulls it off.
