Now That’s Something Good Podcast

Meet our friend, Bryan Roach. Bryan is an incredibly talented musician, singer, songwriter, creative & friend. In this episode he shares his background story from musicals to a record deal to burnout and a 10 year music writing hiatus. This is a story of how many creatives struggle, those of us with perfectionist tendencies have to learn to let go, and the power of having safe allies with whom we can safely bounce our ideas. What is extraordinary about Bryan's story is the redemptive power of faith. Letting go of control, trusting God, and experiencing spiritual growth led to a restoration of things once thought lost. Sarah and Will played witness to and are champions of a revitalization in Bryan's creative life. That's something good!In November 2021, after a decade away from songwriting and recording, Bryan released a new album called The Matthew 6 Project. We are blessed to be part of his music writing hiatus coming to an end and even more excited to share the beginnings of the Matthew 6 Project. Stay tuned for next episode to hear more about the Matthew 6 Project. Whether it's the Chalice Well that accidentally became a part of the Brobdingnagian Bards logo or my very first Renaissance festival, Excalibur Fantasy Faire. I love stories about life during the time of Camelot. So I guess it wasn't much of a surprise that I fell in love with Loreena McKennitt's song “Lady of Shalott” 30 years ago. Her song was written based on a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson. I have my own connection to it too which I'll tell you more about in a bit. But first, I'm extremely pleased to have Loreena McKennitt share her story about how and why “The Lady of Shalott” also became a song. In September, she re-released a 30th anniversary edition of her 1991 album The Visit. The album has sold more than two million copies. It features all of the original songs remastered, plus, a bunch of live performances, alternate mixes, and even some interviews she's done about the album. 8:11 - “The Lady Of Shalott Live Trio - October 28, 2016 Gaillard Centre” by Loreena McKennitt from The Visit - The Definitive Edition You can find out more about Loreena McKennitt at https://loreenamckennitt.com/. You'll also find her all over streaming. This story was released along with other stories as promo for The Visit, The Definitive Edition. So you can find out more about the songs from that album. I gotta say I love her description of this song. I feel like she beautifully captured the imagery of the pastoral English countryside. In the fall of 2019, McKennitt put her career on hold to place more time and attention on civic matters and climate change, while also advocating for stronger legislation to protect artists' rights and encouraging people to buy their music directly from the artist whenever possible. That's fantastic. We need more people to work on the Climate Renaissance. 16:20 - SUPPORT WHAT YOU LOVE The musicians on this podcast are happy to share their music freely with you. You can find their music on streaming music sites. But streaming is a way to sample the music. If you hear something you love, these artists need your support. Please visit their website, sign up to their mailing list and buy something. The holiday season is nearly here. If you're looking for gifts, why not a classic physical CD. I know, I know. Fewer people are buying CDs these days. But that doesn't mean it won't be a great gift for some people. If that's not good enough, you can also buy a shirt, a sticker, a pin, a songbook, jewelry, or even digital downloads for you or a friend. Your purchase allows musicians to keep making music. If you're not into the physical stuff, many artists accept tips or are on Patreon. So please support the arts. If this show made you happy, then you can also join the Gunn Runners Club on Patreon. That was because of a TV mini-series called Anne of Green Gables. The show was based on the books by Lucy Maud Montgomery. There's a wonderful scene in the series where Anne Shirley and some friends reenact the story of “The Lady of Shalott” using a boat. Anne is lying in the boat with flowers across her chest. Her friends push her out onto the river as she recites the poem. The boat slowly glides downstream before it springs a leak. She sits up and tries her best to scoop water out of the sinking boat. Eventually, she is rescued at a bridge by her love interest, the dashing Gilbert Blythe. My mom introduced me to the VHS of the mini-series during my senior year of high school. I don't know why the show resonated so much with me. Maybe it had a lot to do with the beautiful imagery of Prince Edward Island and the wild imagination and creativity of “that Anne-Girl.” It still delights me to this day, though I haven't seen the show in probably a decade. In college, I read all of Montgomery's books and even devoured a book of poetry by her. I remember one poem resonated a LOT at the time. But I can't for the life of me remember what it was. By 2004, Anne of Green Gables was sort of a comfort show for me. I used to watch shows on repeat while I worked. This one regularly made it into rotation for me. One evening I was watching it. I paused the show and picked up the autoharp. I wrote a tribute to dreamers like Anne. The song was sadly short-lived at shows. But I eventually recorded it for my CD, A Tribute to Love. 20:49 - “Here's to the Dreamers” by Marc Gunn from A Tribute to Love 23:02 - One final question: What song would you like to hear more about? Pub Songs & Stories was produced by Marc Gunn. The show is edited by Mitchell Petersen with graphics by Miranda Nelson Designs. You can subscribe and listen wherever you find podcasts. The Kennedy Assassination records are something akin to the UAP report of the U.S. Federal Government. We were told again this year that those records are to remain sealed for National Security reasons. Even without this information, media finds it appropriate to mock anyone questioning the Warren Commission. This policy is directly from a CIA dispatch dated 1967, intended for “countering and discredit the claims of conspiracy theorists” as part of a plan to prevent any “Criticism of the Warren Report.” Reasonable or otherwise, both the official and unofficial conspiracies neglect investigation into a third avenue - the synchro-mystic and esoteric.  Kennedy's assassination was a triplicity of occult lore involving the Egyptian King Osiris, Free-masonic Hiram Abiff, and the mythological King Arthur. His administration was nicknamed ‘Camelot' after Arthur's, three ruffians were arrested over his killing at high-noon, and an obelisk was placed at Dealey Plaza cut into 14 pieces as was the king Osiris cut into the same. Kennedy's presidency and the archetype he embodied made him King with the Damocles sword above his head.  Outside of the odd similarity between Kennedy and President Lincoln, including the car Kennedy was murdered in, a Lincoln Continental, the 58th anniversary of his ritual killing is even more synchronistic in 2021 because the numbers equal 13, while the date 11/22 adds to 33 as it always has. Just days before the anniversary, 2 of the 3 killers of Malcolm X were exonerated. Shortly before, John Hinckley, President Reagan's would-be assassin, who was from Dallas, was set to be released at 67 years old, numbers adding to 13 again. Support this podcast

He opens up about a creative endeavor which he has only recently begun sharing publicly - writing and producing his own music. He speaks candidly about his journey with therapy, sobriety, and self-reflection, which have all allowed him to stay grounded and focused on his artistic choices and career. Aaron also shares his hopes for inspiring “that little kid in the audience” (who was at one time him), and the beauty of capturing moments, albeit differently, on stage and on screen.  In this episode, we talk about:  A missed opportunity to audition for Billy Elliot on Broadway  Why “dance” is under special skills on his resume  His drive to be a movie star How he unwinds, recharges, and takes care of himself  The importance of consistently showing up Tracing his Italian roots Connect with Aaron: IG: @aarondallavilla Twitter: @aarondallavilla Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Arts journalist, critic and broadcaster Richard Watts joins Liz and Ben on a trip sideways in time with reluctant wizard Mervin (with a V) in Pratchett's 1995 short story "Once and Future", originally published in the Arthurian collection Camelot. As he stands on the beach waiting for the right hopeful king to come along, professional time traveler Mervin recounts his story of how he became stranded in a sideways version of medieval Britain. Here the stories of Arthurian myth are more or less real - though one notable figure is missing... With his knowledge of modern technology, a stash of emergency supplies and help from sharp local girl Nimue, he has a plan to fill the gaps in this other history... Pratchett explores a new angle on the Matter of Britain, mixing sci-fi and engineering into a story about stories and "a world that's not exactly memory and not exactly story". Published in between Interesting Times and Maskerade, but stewing in his head for a decade before that, it features some of Pratchett's most developed ideas about time travel, and was something he was proud and fond of. He even thought of turning his more extensive writings for it into a novel! Did you enjoy Pratchett's take on the practicalities of time travel? Would you have the skills to make it as a time traveler? Does it have the beginnings of a full-length novel? And what's the best thing you've ever found in a charity shop? ...we're not sure where that one fits in either, but you asked so we answered! (Thanks Ryn.) Join the conversation using the hashtag #Pratchat49 on social media. Guest Richard Watts is indeed a titan of the Melbourne arts community. He's best known as a journalist for ArtsHub, where he is the National Performing Arts Editor, and as the host of SmartArts, 3RRR's long-running weekly arts programme. As well as being named a living legend of the Melbourne Fringe Festival in 2019, Richard's contributions to the arts were further recognised in 2021 when he was awarded the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Awards' Facilitator's Prize and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Green Room Awards. He's also written for roleplaying games including Call of Cthulhu, Elric!, Vampire: The Masquerade, Werewolf: The Apocalypse and Wraith: The Oblivion. You can find Richard online as @richardthewatts on Twitter. As usual, you can find notes and errata for this episode on our web site. Next episode is our fiftieth - and to celebrate, we're cracking open Nanny Ogg's Cookbook! This is Pratchett's 1999 collaboration with Stephen Briggs and Tina Hannan, the latter of whom is responsible for the actual recipes inside - some of which we'll be trying out with our very special returning guest, comedian and author Cal Wilson! We're also hoping to cook up something a little extra to send your way around Hogswatch as well... For now though, send us your questions - about the book, the recipes, Nanny's etiquette advice or even just doing a Pratchett podcast for over four years. It's a two-fer this week... We're jumping into Lerner & Loewe's most problematic and legendary (wait for it...) shows - the 1958 film Gigi and the 1960 Broadway musical Camelot!   We talk about: - Gigi's origin in the short stories of the French writer Colette (1873-1953) and the film's lurking pedophilia - The nature of women's roles (in 19th-century Paris, 1950s America, and today), and the development of cultural norms around gender, marriage and sexuality. - The “marriage fantasy” and the degree to which Christianity has upheld and supported it – and how both Gigi and Camelot both support and question conventions around heterosexual marriage - The relationship between Camelot's Arthur, Guinevere and Lancelot as an echo of Higgins, Eliza and Pickering's relationship in My Fair Lady. - How Camelot relates to the Kennedy presidency and 1960s America - The show's central theological questions: can there be power that is wielded for good - and is the realization of the Beloved Community possible in this life?   You'll hear: - Maurice Chevalier singing “Thank Heaven For Little Girls” from the 1958 Gigi film soundtrack. - Richard Burton singing the title song and Julie Andrews &Richard Burton singing "What Do the Simple Folk Do?" from the 1960 Broadway Cast Recording of Camelot - Our Beloved Julie Andrews singing “The Lusty Month of May” from the 1960 Camelot Broadway Cast Recording   Continue the conversation with Peter (@pgeinvan) and Nathan (@nathan_lerud) on Twitter, and follow the Gospel of Musical Theatre on Instagram or Twitter @gospelofmt.
