The Calf of Man, just off the southern tip of the Isle of Man. There's a decayed building there. And on its wall hangs a strange thing. A life preserver—round, red and white, worn by time. It made me wonder: What do we leave behind to save the ones who come after us?” This is Quest & Chorus #306 0:21 - We Banjo 3 "Alive With You" from Open The Road 3:14 - WELCOME TO QUEST & CHORUS Where every place has a story, every story has a song, and every song is a step in the quest. You can join me with an auditory and visual adventure through podcasts, blogs, videos, and photos. In 2026, you can join me for a Celtic Invasion of Galicia in Spain. Sign to the Celtic Invasion Vacations mailing list at CelticInvasion.com. Let's begin the… QUEST & CHORUS of CALF OF MAN The Calf of Man is a small island located about a half mile off the southern tip of the Isle of Man. It is a protected national park that is part of the Manx National Heritage. It is home to large number of species of birds, including some colonies that migrate there. Around 33 species of seabirds breed on the islet annually, including  Manx Shearwater, Kittiwake, Razorbill and Shag. Every year, I take a small group of people to explore our Celtic heritage. It's called Celtic Invasion Vacations. Next year, we're going to Galicia in Spain. That's one of the most-obscure Celtic nations. But in the summer of 2024, we did a Celtic Invasion of the Isle of Man. On the invasion, we took the Wild Life and Scenic Trip around Calf of Man with Shona Boat Trips. They are one of the small boat operators that give tours. Desi was our guide. He lived on the island for a year. We didn't get to explore much of the land. Because the Calf of Man is raw. The kind of place the sea keeps for itself. There was a building by the shore. We couldn't inspect it during our fifteen minutes on the ground, but it looked like just the bones of a dwelling, stone clinging to stone. And from its wall, there was one oddity that stood out in the stark landscape. A life preserver. That's wild to think about. A life preserver is a tool meant to save someone in the future, and it was hanging on the ruins of a home from the past. It reminded me of Miranda, from the movie, Serenity. A planet left behind. A warning not given. A silence that cost too much. That building, that place… it feels like Miranda. Not because it's dead. But because someone left it—hoping it might save someone else. In the first episode of Firefly, Malcolm Reynolds is fighting in Serenity Valley. A soldier standing next to him is terrified that they are gonna die. Mal tells him, “we're too pretty to die.” He's filled with so much hope. A moment later he watches in horror as his air support leaves. He watches his Angels fly away as the soldier next to him is shot down. Two-thirds of the Independents died in the Battle of Serenity Valley. Two-thirds of Mal's fellow soldiers did not make it home. And yet he lived. He was preserved. MUCH LIKE THE SECRET WORD OF THE DAY. WHAT WAS PRESERVED? Were you ever left behind? How did you move forward? Music is my safe place. That's one of the reasons I wrote “Serenity Valley Waltz”. I wanted a song for survivors. For those who were left behind. To not just face the future, but to also take care of the next generation. This is why I spend so much time thinking about sustainability and my music career. Are we making a life preserver for the next generation? For my daughters? I've been reading the book Ministry of the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson. He does an amazing job at illustrating the tipping point of climate change. When we HAVE to start doing something about it. The very first chapters of the book lay out a horror that brought tears to my eyes. Especially when I imagined what my children will most likely face at some point. We can use that life preserver right now by changing how we do stuff right now. And perhaps music can be our guiding light.  Our healer. Our hope. “Serenity Valley Waltz” is a song all about healing and hope. It's about overcoming our nightmares and looking out across the ocean from the Isle of Man and seeing a better future for all of us. This song is for the places that hold pain. But also for the objects that remind us to stay afloat. That round red and white ring… it didn't save a life today. But it might tomorrow. This is Serenity Valley Waltz.” 16:19 - NEWS Marc Gunn “Serenity Valley Waltz” from Selcouth If you want to learn more about “Serenity Valley Waltz”, visit the shownotes. I did an episode where I shared the inspiration beyond the song. You can also find a link to the discussion that Mikey Mason and I had when we wrote the song as part of the In the ‘Verse podcast. Poll: What are your favorite songs on Selcouth? Merch: Buy Selcouth Thank you for standing on the shore with me today. The Calf of Man may be forgotten, but its story, like yours, is worth remembering. Next week, we climb to Tintagel, the seat of Camelot, to raise a glass to myths and farewells. Until then… Leave something behind.  Not because you're going… But because someone might come looking. 19:30 - CREDITS Thanks for listening to Quest & Chorus. Exploring Boston: History, Culture, and Hidden Gems in the Cradle of Liberty

Who Wear There by the Travel Brats

Boston is one of those cities that just gets under your skin in the best way possible. Equal parts old-school history and modern-day hustle, it's where cobblestone streets meet glass skyscrapers, where the story of America was born, and where you can eat your body weight in lobster rolls without a shred of regret.Founded in 1630 by English Puritans, Boston has played host to some of the most pivotal events in U.S. history—the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and even the first public park in America. Today, it's a vibrant mix of college-town energy, cutting-edge innovation, and diehard sports fandom (you'll never hear a “Go Sox!” shouted with more passion than here).I recently spent five days exploring Boston like a local, armed with a loose plan, comfy walking shoes, and an appetite big enough to conquer the city's legendary food scene. Here's how it all went down—my perfect Boston adventure. Day 1: Arrival & First Taste of the CityFlying into Logan International Airport is a breeze—it's practically right in the city. But here's your first Boston pro-tip: skip renting a car if you can. Boston traffic is next-level chaotic, parking is expensive, and the city is surprisingly walkable. Between the subway (locals call it “the T”) and Uber, you'll get around just fine.Of course, I had to test the rental car waters—$368 for two days of a Nissan Rogue—and let me tell you, the line alone made me question my life choices. If you do rent, book with a company that lets you walk straight to the garage and grab your car. Otherwise, hop in an Uber and save yourself the headache.Where to StayI split my stay between two totally different vibes:Hampton Inn & Suites Watertown – Budget-friendly ($100 a night) and great if you don't mind being just outside the city. Parking in Boston can run you $30 a day, so staying here helped balance the budget.Copley Square Hotel (FOUND Hotels) – Right in the heart of Back Bay, this historic gem ranges from $300–$600 a night. My corner-view studio overlooked the breathtaking Trinity Church at sunset, and it felt like waking up inside a postcard. Designed in 1877 by architect H.H. Richardson, this place is dripping with Richardsonian Romanesque charm—arched windows, rough stone, and colorful details. Around Copley, you'll also find:Fairmont Copley Plaza (1912) – A Gilded Age beauty and part of the Historic Hotels of America.Boston Public Library McKim Building (1895) – A Renaissance Revival masterpiece with white marble halls and free daily tours at 2 pm. Don't skip it; the architecture is jaw-dropping.Old South Church (1873) – A National Historic Landmark in Northern Italian Gothic style, complete with multicolored stone and a towering bell.John Hancock Tower (1976) – Boston's tallest skyscraper at 790 feet, shimmering in blue glass. After a long travel day, we celebrated our first night with dinner at Lolita Cocina & Tequila Bar. Order the lobster guacamole and grilled elote—and when in Boston, remember the golden rule: always order seafood. Steaks are for later. Oh, and if you see Scrod on the menu? Don't panic. It's not a weird mythical fish; it's just the white catch of the day—usually cod or haddock. Day 2: Walking Through HistoryIf Boston had a greatest hits album, it would be the Freedom Trail—a 2.5-mile path that connects 16 historic sites and tells the story of America's revolution. You can do it self-guided, join a regular tour, or go all out with an actor-led adventure (think Paul Revere cosplay).Morning Coffee & Boston CommonStart with caffeine at Thinking Cup Coffee Bar, then wander into Boston Common, the oldest public park in America (1634). It's massive, filled with monuments, and now home to the striking Embrace Memorial, honoring Martin Luther King Jr.From there, the trail unfolds like a time machine:Massachusetts State House (1798) – Charles Bulfinch's golden-domed wonder, still home to the state government.Park Street Church (1809) – Once Boston's tallest landmark, it sits on the site of the city's old grain storage.Granary Burying Ground (1660) – Final resting place of heavyweights like John Hancock, Sam Adams, and Paul Revere.King's Chapel & Burying Ground (1686) – Boston's first Anglican church, with over 330 years of history.Boston Latin School Site (1635) – The oldest public school in America; today it's marked by a Benjamin Franklin statue.Old Corner Bookstore (1718) – Once the publishing hub of legends like Hawthorne, Longfellow, and Thoreau. Now… a Chipotle (I wish I were kidding).Lunch at Union Oyster HouseBy now, you'll be starving. Enter Union Oyster House, America's oldest continuously operating restaurant (since 1826). The JFK booth is a must-sit, and yes—you're ordering a lobster roll.Afternoon: Monuments & Baseball MagicDon't miss the New England Holocaust Memorial—six glass towers etched with survivor stories, both sobering and moving. Then, if you're lucky enough to visit in season, cap off your night at Fenway Park. Whether it's catching a Red Sox game, snagging early batting practice passes, or just soaking up the energy at Cask 'n Flagon across the street (hot tip: persistence pays when getting a table here), Fenway is pure Boston. Day 3: More Freedom Trail & North End TreatsStart with breakfast at Quincy Market, the ultimate food hall. Then dive back into history:Old South Meeting House (1729) – Where colonists debated tea taxes and kicked off the Boston Tea Party.Old State House (1713) – Boston's oldest public building, central to colonial politics.Boston Massacre Site (1770) – A simple cobblestone marker for one of America's darkest sparks of revolution. From here, pop back into Quincy Market for another lobster roll (yes, it's worth a second one).Keep following the trail:Faneuil Hall (1742) – “Cradle of Liberty” where fiery speeches once filled the air. Today, it's mostly a giant souvenir shop, but the echoes of history remain.Paul Revere House (1680) – The patriot's humble home. Tours are intimate but no photos allowed inside.Old North Church (1723) – Where lanterns signaled “One if by land, two if by sea.” Take the tour to see the crypt and bell chamber.Cannoli TimeBoston's North End is an Italian dreamland, so refuel at Mike's Pastry with a giant cannoli. (Pro tip: get a few extra to-go. You'll thank me later.)End the night at Bell in Hand Tavern (1795), America's oldest continuously operating tavern. It's rowdy, it's historic, and it's the perfect spot for your nightcap. Day 4: Big Battles & Big ShipsIf your legs aren't jelly yet, tackle the Bunker Hill Monument. Climb the 294 steps for killer views of the city. From there, wander over to the USS Constitution, aka “Old Ironsides,” the oldest commissioned warship afloat. The ship and museum are free and make for an epic history-meets-maritime adventure. For a modern twist, hop in an Uber to the JFK Presidential Library & Museum—a sleek, inspiring deep dive into the Camelot era. Afterward, head to Sam Adams Brewery in Jamaica Plain. Tours start at $10, include tastings, and give you all the Boston beer vibes. Day 5: Art, Rainy-Day Magic & Sunset on the HarborBoston weather can turn on a dime, so I saved indoor treasures for day five.Morning: Museum of Fine ArtsThe MFA is massive, so choose wisely:Jewelry lovers: Beyond Brilliance exhibit (ancient to modern sparkle, with Chanel and Bulgari highlights).Classicists: Greek, Roman, and Byzantine collections.Painters-at-heart: Dutch & Flemish gallery with works by Rembrandt and Rubens.Quirky souls: Dollhouses and temporary Van Gogh exhibits.Fuel up at the museum café before heading out.Evening: Sunset Harbor CruiseOur trip ended on the water, with a Boston Harbor sunset cruise. Even in the rain, the top deck views were worth it. There's a buffet dinner, DJ, and plenty of space to dance—because no Boston trip is complete without one last celebration. Other Boston Must-Dos (If You Have Time)Duck Boat Tour – Amphibious buses that roam the streets then splash into the Charles River. Cheesy? Yes. Fun? Also yes.Cheers Pub – Grab a drink where everybody used to know your name.Green Dragon Tavern – A revolutionary haunt turned modern-day pub.Boston Burger Co. or Wahlburgers – Because you need at least one outrageous burger on this trip. Final ThoughtsBoston is the kind of city that can be done in a weekend but deserves a week. It's history you can touch, seafood you'll crave long after, and neighborhoods that feel like they've been waiting just for you.If you only had one day, I'd say walk the Freedom Trail—it's Boston in a nutshell. But if you want to experience the city like a local? Take your time, eat the lobster rolls, get lost in the cobblestone streets, and maybe—just maybe—let Fenway turn you into a Red Sox fan for life.Boston, you're wicked awesome.

King Arthur stands astride the intersection of history, myth, legend, and politics.  In every age of the history of Britain, he is reinterpreted for new audiences and new purposes.  When composer Henry Purcell and poet-librettist John Dryden set out to write their opera about Arthur, they did so following a century in which England had seen monarchs rise, fall, be beheaded, exiled, returned in triumph, and driven out in disgrace.  King Arthur takes place not in Camelot, but in a world of clashing cultures and ideals.  Arthur finds his Britons beset by Saxon invaders, but after his victory, he is able to lead as both peoples transition from fighting one another, to become a stronger people together. Join us for a close look at this fascinating work or art, and enjoy (in English, of course!) Dryden's poetry and Purcell's rich and tuneful music. Hosted by Pat with guest co-host Gerald Malone. Gerald Malone's website, TheRestIsOpera.com is brimming with commentary on opera productions that he has seen around the world, and “scuttlebutt” about opera from a suspiciously well-informed little dog. Gerald Malone is also the Opera Critic of ReactionLife, a UK-based online current affairs and cultural publication.

The Double Life of Robert McNamara: How America's 'Best and Brightest' Led the Nation into Vietnam While Knowing the War Was Unwinnable

Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 5, 2025 58:10

There is no more shakespearean parable of the tragic rise and fall of the postwar American meritocratic elite than Robert Strange McNamara. War hero, Harvard Business School, head of Ford, begged by JFK to take a role - any role - in Camelot. Then came the equally meteoric fall as JFK and then LBJ's Secretary of Defense - Vietnam and all its death and deceit. With his brother William, Philip Taubman has written about what he calls McNamara's “double life” in his new biography, McNamara At War. In this “new history”, they uncover new documents showing that McNamara was privately telling his aide John McNaughton in April 1966 - just nine months after advocating for massive escalation - that he "wanted to bring the boys home so bad I can hardly stand it." Yet this analytic whiz-kid, a poetry loving smart machine in a grey suit, continued prosecuting this unwinnable war for nearly two more years. The Taubmans suggest, therefore, that the catastrophic American defeat in Vietnam wasn't simply a military failure. It was a defeat of the entire postwar American technocratic meritocracy represented, above all, by the tragic double life of Robert Strange McNamara.1. Institutional Loyalty Can Override Moral Judgment McNamara's "contorted loyalty" to LBJ and the presidency led him to continue prosecuting a war he privately knew was unwinnable. His defense was that cabinet members serve the president, not some "higher calling" - yet the actual oath of office mentions defending the Constitution, not the president.2. Technical Brilliance Doesn't Guarantee Moral Leadership The "whiz kids" represented a new technocratic approach to governance based on data analysis and corporate efficiency. Yet when faced with Vietnam's moral complexities, these analytical skills became tools for prolonging catastrophe rather than preventing it.3. Elite Institutions May Inadequately Prepare Leaders for Ethical Dilemmas McNamara's stellar credentials - Berkeley, Harvard Business School, Ford presidency - represented the pinnacle of American meritocracy. But this system apparently failed to develop his capacity to act on moral conviction when it conflicted with institutional pressure.4. The "Double Life" Problem in High-Stakes Decision Making The gap between McNamara's private knowledge (war unwinnable by late 1965) and public actions (continued escalation through 1968) suggests a psychological split that may be endemic to powerful positions where personal judgment conflicts with role expectations.5. Personal Character Flaws Amplified by Power McNamara's failures weren't limited to Vietnam - his treatment of his dying wife, his emotional manipulation by LBJ, and his suppression of his own moral compass suggest character weaknesses that became magnified and consequential when combined with immense institutional power.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

For our Ninth Anniversary Episode, the Shat Crew draws the sword from the stone and rides into John Boorman's epic Excalibur (1981). Commissioned by Chris, Mike, and Ollie to celebrate their father Robert's 60th birthday, this Arthurian fever dream delivers knights, magic, and more shiny armor than a Manowar album cover. From Nicol Williamson's scene-stealing Merlin to Helen Mirren's wickedly alluring Morgana, the movie is equal parts mythic grandeur and campy chaos. Gene marvels at the operatic visuals, while Big D is dazzled by the medieval carnage. Together they debate whether this is the definitive retelling of the Arthurian legend or just a two-and-a-half-hour bad trip brought to life. As we celebrate nine years of podcasting, join us for knights in shining armor, incestuous twists and the most metal “O Fortuna” montage ever put to film. Long live the once and future pod! Plot Summary:In Excalibur (1981), director John Boorman reimagines the Arthurian legend with a mix of operatic spectacle and raw brutality. From Uther Pendragon's lustful betrayal to Arthur's rise as king, the film chronicles the rise and fall of Camelot through battles, betrayal, and forbidden love. With unforgettable performances from Nicol Williamson as Merlin and Helen Mirren as Morgana, Excalibur stands as one of the most iconic—and most eccentric—fantasy films of the 1980s. One of the pleasures of putting the Talkhouse Podcast together is that the guests often leave their promotional hats at home and just dig into conversations about life, and that's definitely what happened this week with Matty Matheson and Jennifer Castle. Matty Matheson you'll surely recognize either as a superstar chef and restaurateur who appeared on a bunch of VICE shows way back when—or if not that then as a star and consultant on the hit TV show The Bear, where he plays the sublimely ridiculous Neil Fak. Matheson has lived several lifetimes, building a reputation as a wild partier in his youth, which eventually led to a heart attack at just 29—that's touched on briefly in this conversation. He's also authored a bunch of super down-to-earth cookbooks, including the great new Soups, Salads, Sandwiches—you can guess what that one covers. Matheson's connection to singer-songwriter Jennifer Castle goes way, way back. They met working in Toronto restaurants and became good friends over the years: Castle sang at Matty's wedding and she was a doula at the birth of his first child, a topic that comes up in this chat. Castle has been making music for the past 20 or so years, first under the name Castlemusic but more recently under her own name. Don't let the gentleness of her indie-folk fool you; there's a lot that cuts deep in her songs. Speaking of those songs, one of the songs from her latest album Camelot was featured in season three of The Bear—a great way for Matheson to help get the word out on the person he calls the greatest Canadian singer-songwriter ever. Check out “Blowing Kisses” right here. In this lovely conversation, Castle and Matheson talk about how music and food can both bring people together, but they get really excited talking about two other natural pursuits: childbirth and farming. (Matheson co-owns a farm called Blue Goose that you'll hear a bit about.) Matheson talks a bit about his family and his current book tour, and Castle shows off a touching gift that Matheson gave her many years ago. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:35 – Conversation starts 3:25 – Matty's airport adventures 6:38 – “Eat little shrimps!” 8:36 – Matty loves Jennifer's music, as you'll see 12:36 – Matty gets melancholy about their shared Toronto past 21:51 – The birth of children and the birth of Blue Goose 37:24 – Living the creative life Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Matty Matheson and Jennifer Castle for chatting. What happens when glamour meets scandal, and resilience triumphs over adversity? Join us as we sit down with Countess Ilene Medecin, the former First Lady of Nice, France, in Episode 253 of Late Boomers. Discover her electrifying journey from a family in Beverly Hills with roots stemming from legends in organized crime and the Hollywood makeup industry to the aristocratic circles of the French Riviera. Uncover the dramatic tales from her memoir, "Arrested," featuring political controversies, jail time, and high-society scandals. Tune in for a tale of strength, survival, and hope that will leave you inspired. Don't miss this captivating episode!Countess Ilene Medecin's Bio:Ilene Médecin's life is a tapestry of glamour, intrigue, and resilience. As the only American, aside from Princess Grace Kelly, to attain the esteemed position of First Lady of Nice and the French Riviera, Ilene's story is both unique and captivating. Born and raised in the heart of Beverly Hills, California, with two famous uncles—Max Factor, the iconic cosmetic mogul, and Jake the Barber, a pivotal figure in the rise of Las Vegas—Ilene's path to prominence seemed almost destined.“Arrested” is a riveting memoir that takes you through Ilene's extraordinary journey, from her star-studded upbringing to her glamorous and, at times, perilous life on the French Riviera. Marrying Jacques Médecin, a Medici Count affectionately known as “King Jacquou,” Ilene found herself at the center of a century-old political dynasty. Together, they mingled with royals, celebrities, and politicians, sharing their social circle with the likes of Princess Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier.Ilene's life, akin to a storybook Camelot, saw her at the pinnacle of a fantasy existence. However, this enchanting narrative took a dramatic turn, leading her from the heights of societal acclaim to the depths of a French prison cell. Amidst trysts and scandals, Ilene was unprepared for the fall of a prominent political family and her eventual arrest for her husband's alleged misdeeds. Jacques's career ended in a puzzling political exile in Uruguay, a stark contrast to his previous stature as Mayor of Nice, President of Alpes-Maritimes, French Minister of Tourism, and Member of Parliament.Connect with Ilene:Website: https://countessilenemedecin.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/countessilenemedecin/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/countessilenemedecinYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@countessilenemedecinBook: https://www.amazon.com/Arrested-Memoir-American-France-Riviera/dp/1667882406?&linkCode=sl1&tag=wrina...Thank you for listening. Greg Jenner is joined in medieval Europe by Dr Mary Bateman and comedian Mike Wozniak to learn all about the legends of King Arthur. Most of us have heard of Arthur, Guinevere, Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table. But where do these legends come from? Arthur first appears in the writings of a 9th-Century monk, but he's not the king we know today: no Merlin or Lancelot, no Excalibur, and no Camelot. These elements were added later, as the legends were retold and rewritten across Europe. This episode traces the stories of Arthur and his knights from their early medieval origins, exploring the changes made as they were adapted over the centuries by everyone from French romance authors to Victorian poets, and taking in some famous medieval texts, including the Welsh Mabinogion and Malory's Morte d'Arthur, as well as some lesser-known tales. Along the way, we also look at the places in modern Britain that still bear Arthurian names and the wacky artefacts that have been associated with the legendary king, and ask the crucial question: did King Arthur really exist? This is a radio edit of the original podcast episode.
