I'm Andrew Sheets, Global Head of Fixed Income Research at Morgan Stanley. Today, why the Fed could do less than expected and why that could still lead to more volatility. It's Wednesday, June 24th at 2pm in London. Last week saw the first meeting of the Federal Reserve under its new chair, Kevin Warsh. It didn't disappoint. The Fed's Summary of Economic Projections saw significantly higher inflation than the last iteration in March, and in turn, a much stronger case to raise interest rates, perhaps multiple times. The Fed's statement, which laid out its views around the economy and its reasons for action, was changed dramatically – and also significantly shortened. We don't think the Fed will ultimately follow through on the interest rate rises that were flagged in this meeting and will choose instead to remain on hold this year. But we think this scenario of them staying on hold can still lead to more volatility. I'll try to address each side of this apparent contradiction. First, the Fed is clearly worried about inflation, which has been elevated for a considerable period of time. But working through the numbers, Morgan Stanley economists forecast lower inflation over the rest of this year than the Fed now expects. And so, while we think it would be entirely reasonable for the Fed to expect to raise interest rates based on the high inflation that they have penciled in, we think they could reach a different conclusion if our lower estimates are ultimately correct. Supporting our case, at least in our view, is that energy prices have fallen significantly in recent weeks since some of these Fed forecasts were set, as markets have moved to believe not only would existing oil production resume in the Persian Gulf, but Iran could increase exports materially under its new agreement with the United States. That would greatly reduce a source of underlying inflationary pressure in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. With inflation set to come in lower than feared, we think the Fed's most natural option will be to remain on hold this year rather than raise rates. But if the Fed's not doing anything, how exactly is that going to drive volatility? Our answer to that question lies in another thing that it's not going to be doing – providing as much information about where it thinks monetary policy is going next. Indeed, since the financial crisis, the Fed often went out of its way to give so-called forward guidance and significant detail about when and how they may change policy in the future. Proponents saw this as a way to avoid surprises and smooth the transmission of this policy, but critics saw it as limiting and potentially giving markets a false sense of certainty. The new Fed chair, Kevin Warsh, is one of these critics and has promised to give a lot less forward guidance. That lack of handholding by the Fed about what they might do next is a big change. Coupled with the potential for a smaller Fed balance sheet and big questions around the path of inflation and the impact of AI and productivity, every data point now has more potential to shift the market's thinking. My strategy colleagues think that this will lead to higher volatility in two-year interest rates, as well as more volatility in currencies. I'd also note that here in the UK, this paradox is not nearly as puzzling. Here, the Bank of England's target rate has been the same level since mid-December. But that hasn't stopped the UK two-year bond yield from trading in an over 100 basis point range. Thank you, as always, for your time. The Harlem Renaissance, the great flowering of African American arts and culture in the early twentieth century, is hard to define but easy to admire. Coupled with the Great Migration, in which hundreds of thousands of Southern black workers moved to the rapidly industrializing cities of the North, the Harlem Renaissance was a time of radically innovative artistic expression, as musicians, visual artists, and writers forged a new consciousness. The works they produced reflected a spirit of change, progress, and optimism – but underlying the excitement were also a sense of struggle; reflective themes of nostalgia, guilt, and regret; and a clear-eyed view of racial relations in American culture. For the second time in 10 months, Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto lost a no-hitter in the ninth inning. This time, on Saturday in Chicago, he flirted with perfection in a win over the White Sox, retiring his first 23 batters faced. Yamamoto is the first Dodgers pitcher to lose two no-hitters in the ninth inning. Coupled with his previous start, his 45 consecutive batters retired was one shy of Yusmeiro Petit's major league record. The Dodgers had a so-so road trip, splitting six games with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago White Sox. Big innings felled the pitching staff over the last week-plus, and the home run ball has terrorized Los Angeles pitching all June. Jack Dreyer allowed four home runs in his first 91 major league appearances, but since returning from the injured list has allowed five home runs in his last seven outings, for instance. Freddie Freeman has been hot at the plate for about four weeks, and on Tuesday in Pittsburgh got his 2,500th career hit, just the 102nd player to reach that milestone. Shohei Ohtani (left knee) and Justin Wrobleski (right hamstring) had injury scares last week but appear to be okay. Tommy Edman will be activated off the injured list this week for his season debut after ankle surgery, while relievers Evan Phillips and Brock Stewart are nearing returns of their own. The pardon power that the President has is, as Constitutional prerogatives go, about as absolute as it can be.  Coupled with the friendly majority Donald Trump has on the United States Supreme Court, which gave him immunity from prosecution for many crimes charged in connection with his pardons, and you have what some call a pardon-palooza going on in his second term.  Most egregious to some, like this observer, was the blanket pardon of all those involved in the January 6, 2021 riots at the U.S. Capitol (not to mention the ‘stupid on stilts’ weaponization fund.) Remember when his former Attorney General, Pam Bondi, in her confirmation hearing, said that such pardons would be handled on a case -by- case basis.  President Trump has been doling out pardons for political loyalty, pay-to-play corruption, and even state prosecutions, over which he has no say.  It boggles the mind how far we’ve come from the framers’ intent which was to give the President the ability to show mercy and heal national wounds.  This President isn’t the first to expand its use to miscreants, but as tens of thousands of requests for clemency go unanswered the friends and family plan grows and metastasizes.  Now he’s telling staff not to worry about whatever questionable actions he requests because they will be pardoned on his way out of the Oval Office.  To discuss this trend is Professor Mark Osler of the University of St. Thomas, in Minnesota, an expert on the topic.

On the waiver wire front, uncovering values requires a sharp focus on expected metrics and situational deployment. Washington Nationals starter Cade Cavalli has emerged as a high-priority addition, exhibiting elite command over his last three starts spanning 19.3 innings. Cavalli has posted a stellar 2.79 ERA, a 1.03 WHIP, and a spectacular 2.44 SIERA alongside 24 strikeouts—highlighted by consecutive 10-strikeout performances against Atlanta and the Mets. Backed by a highly potent Nationals offense, his run support floor remains high. Darrell Cronk, chief investment officer at Wells Fargo Wealth & Investment Management, says he expects inflation will top 4% during the summer, which will put pressure on the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates, but that could dramatically increase the potential for recession because rate hikes and oil-driven inflation stocks, historically, have been a recipe for trouble. Cronk, who also serves as president of the Wells Fargo Investment Institute, says that virtually all economic and market outlooks hinge on questions around reopening the Strait of Hormuz, but his outlook remains positive, noting that markets have nearly eclipsed in five months Wells Fargo's forecast for the year, with solid earnings poised to drive things higher from here. In spite of the economic concerns, Cromk is optimistic that it will be "a good year when we put 2026 in the history books." Jim Lee, founder of StratFi, says the technicals show a market that is somewhat overbought, making it due for a minor pullback of about 5 percent "in the next month or so," but says he would buy the dips because the market has the potential to deliver 20 percent gains when 2026 is done. Lee notes that he particularly likes the "HALO stocks," "heavy asset, low obsolescence" plays that tend to be old-economy dividend-payers, which have done well in 2026 and have momentum that he expects to continue, even if it takes longer than expected to resolve the war in Iran. Plus, Gordon Hamilton, senior managing director for Kayne Anderson — portfolio manager for the Kayne Anderson Energy Infrastructure closed-end fund — says 'historic' oil drawdowns are setting up a major call once a peace deal is done for U.S. energy infrastructure companies to meet global demand for propane, butane, crude oil and natural gas. Nearly 12,000 new retirement claims entered the Office of Personnel Management's systems last month. Coupled with OPM's processing of about 17,000 retirement applications, the agency managed to reduce its inventory by several thousand claims. April was the first time OPM's retirement backlog has dipped below 50,000 claims in more than five months. The historic Israel-Lebanon ceasefire announced this week is the result of a direct conversation between the President of Lebanon and the Prime Minister of Israel. Tahiyrah Ali Free Chaz BunchI was 16 at the time of the arrest, held on half a million dollar bond, tried, convicted, sentenced and now struggling each day to understand what it is to live a life as a regular human being upon this Earth. There are many reasons that my case has not captured media attention, one being, I am not on “Death Row,” and do not meet the urgency criteria necessary to draw that spark of public attention. However, the sensationalism aspect has always been there, with the right reporting. Due to the fact that my case is only 16 years old, as if that is not long enough time for being in prison for a crime, I'm innocent of. One day is too long, but due to no significant injustice whereby the dramatic effect of our legal system's failure would invoke the participation of those working inside the system to assist in exonerating me I believe with your help I can receive the justice envisioned by the U.S. Constitution.On the day of my arrest, the threatening physical strength of the Mahoning County, Youngstown, Ohio detectives and police department resulted in the actual culprit, who admitted to every element of the crime, thus cutting a deal for partial immunity to implicate me as a co-conspirator and ultimately the principle perpetrator. Coupled with the prosecutorial misconduct of the state's attorney to manipulate witnesses and manufacture testimonies that procured a prejudice, bias, and partial trial that put me at a detrimental disadvantage. This is just a diminutive part perpetrated by the acting dignitaries surrounding my case, court proceedings and trial. During the course of my trial my constitutional rights were clearly violated with no one to fight for me and being illiterate didn't help. I was denied Due Process of the Law, Equal Protection of the Fifth Amendment and Effective Assistance of Counsel as guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment, which ultimately resulted in the deprivation of my constitutional entitlement to a fair trial. I have been denied justice as it appears in the minds of the average citizen, and I believe that with media exposure and public awareness and support my case can again rise to the level of scrutiny. Eels are a popular food in parts of Asia, but they can't be commercially bred in captivity. Coupled with trade bans to protect the highly endangered fish, this has led to baby eels becoming one of the most trafficked creatures in the world. BBC Eye and DOCDAYS investigate this global trade from the rivers of the UK to Haiti, Poland and Russia. We're in the UK where the last remaining eel trader in the country has a licence to export baby eels to stock a conservation project in Russia. But questions have been raised over whether this is really what's going on. We visit an investigative journalist in Poland who's been looking into these exports to Russia and elsewhere in Eastern Europe. With access to a member of an organised crime gang from Hong Kong, we hear how smugglers evade the French authorities to export baby eels to Asia. We also visit the Caribbean where a new and booming demand for glass eels is having a big impact on communities and politics in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
