Send us Fan MailThis episode is for nonprofits searching for alternatives to traditional aid models and dependency-driven philanthropy. The conversation blends international development, nonprofit operations, sustainability, and social enterprise into a highly searchable leadership discussion.Sustainable nonprofit development in Africa requires more than donations—it requires long-term economic thinking, local leadership, and community ownership. In this Global Edition of The Nonprofit Show, Paul Smith, UK Director of MUSANA, shares how the organization is transforming rural communities in Uganda through healthcare, education, hospitality businesses, and locally driven enterprise systems designed to become financially sustainable.Rather than creating dependency on Western aid, MUSANA uses philanthropy as catalytic investment. Their model builds hospitals, schools, hotels, restaurants, and jobs that eventually generate enough local revenue to sustain operations and fund scholarships and outreach programs internally.Paul explains how MUSANA's district-based strategy has already created nearly 900 full-time jobs while building systems that communities themselves support, value, and grow. The conversation also takes an honest look at the ethical challenges facing international nonprofits, including poverty marketing, child sponsorship culture, and “white savior” dynamics that can unintentionally reinforce harmful power structures. One of the most compelling moments comes when Paul says:“No global economy has ever been built off charity. It's always enterprise, it's always industry that builds an economy.”The episode also introduces a powerful nonprofit leadership concept:“Every single charity should have an out vision.”If your nonprofit works internationally—or simply wants to build stronger, more sustainable systems locally—this conversation offers fresh thinking on what long-term impact can truly look like. 00:00:00 Introduction To MUSANA's Mission 00:02:32 Breaking Cycles Of Aid Dependency 00:05:17 Building Schools, Hospitals & Enterprises 00:07:19 How Local Revenue Funds Community Growth 00:10:30 Why Free Aid Can Create Dependency 00:11:49 Local Leadership Versus Western Control 00:14:20 The Ethics Of Poverty Tourism 00:17:48 Why MUSANA Rejects Child Sponsorship 00:19:49 When Western-Led Models Fail 00:22:20 Ego, Power & Nonprofit Leadership 00:25:23 Access, Opportunity & Economic Growth 00:27:03 Why Every Charity Needs An “Out Vision” #TheNonprofitShow #InternationalDevelopment #UgandaFind us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

This week we welcome back to Unpacked Paul Smith. Last time we had him on the show, in 2020, he was in the local news every week as the councillor in charge of Bristol's housing. For most of the last six years he's been out of the public spotlight, but in the last few weeks has been selected to help locals decide how to spend millions of pounds of government money in the place he grew up – Hartcliffe. While he's not lived there for more than 25 years, it's a place he remains passionate about – enough to have written a book, Hartcliffe Betrayed, about how the neighbourhood has been failed by people in power, ever since it was planned after the Second World War.Paul, himself a former local Labour councillor for Hartcliffe, and more recently the CEO of a housing association, now finds himself trying to ensure Hartcliffe doesn't get betrayed again. The programme he'll be leading, Pride in Place, will see £20m invested in the area over 10 years. So why is Paul the right man for the job? How will he ensure that local people get a proper say in how that money – less than it sounds – is put to work? And what would success look like? Sit down and find out, in a hard-hitting and sometimes humorous edition of Bristol Unpacked…The Bristol Cable is Bristol's community-owned cooperative newsroom – fiercely independent journalism that puts people before profit. Since 2014, we've been holding power to account through investigative reporting, community campaigns, and democratic media ownership. Because when journalism serves the community, not shareholders, real change becomes possible.Support independent journalism and help us bring more vital conversations to Bristol: become a Bristol Cable member.
My guest this week is the actor Oliver Platt. You know him from The Bear, Chicago Med, The Three Musketeers, Beethoven, The West Wing, Frost/Nixon — honestly, the list goes on forever. He's one of those rare actors who somehow exists in every lane at once: beloved by movie people, television people, theater people, and apparently menswear guys too. We talk about growing up as the son of a diplomat, moving from Hong Kong to Japan to Washington D.C., discovering acting as a survival mechanism, early days in New York with Stanley Tucci and Hank Azaria, body image, GLP-1s, Paul Smith, Japanese denim, heritage workwear, and why sometimes you need to “give yourself the fuzzies.” * Sponsored by Bezel - the trusted marketplace for buying and selling your next luxury watch Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Join Lisa & Matt as we sit down with Paul, a former clinical psychologist whose life took a shocking turn from running a thriving private practice to serving time in federal prison for healthcare fraud. Get your copy of Paul's book 'Cruel and Unusual Punishment: A Memoir of the Psychological Realities of Federal Prison' here: https://amzn.to/3QHVs4c Paul shares how he built a successful psychology practice between 2007 and 2011 before everything unraveled, leading to his conviction and incarceration. Drawing from his powerful book, he explores the concept of “savage vs. civilized,” revealing how quickly societal norms can break down when survival instincts take over. We dive deep into his firsthand experiences navigating the federal prison system—from solitary confinement and unexpected transfers to the harsh realities inmates faced during COVID-19. Paul opens up about the unspoken rules of prison life, including how dominance and intimidation shape daily interactions and determine survival. In one striking story, Paul recounts a childhood moment on a farm where he learned the hard way asserting dominance can mean the difference between vulnerability and control. He shares how, despite initially trying to avoid conflict, he was forced to adapt quickly in situations that challenged his place within the prison hierarchy. This episode also explores bigger-picture conversations around criminal justice reform, questioning whether the system prioritizes punishment over rehabilitation. We discuss the urgent need for meaningful work, education, and reentry programs that can help break cycles of crime and give individuals a real second chance. If you're into true crime podcasts, white-collar crime stories, prison survival insights, and deep psychological perspectives, this episode offers a rare, inside look you won't hear anywhere else. *Please note all opinions in the show are our own and solely in regards to the specific case we are discussing in this episode* We made a one stop shop for all the Eye for an Eye links our listeners might want to check out whether its where to listen, our merch shop, all of our socials, our email, or ways to support the show, we'd love for you to visit the link below! https://msha.ke/eyeforeyepod/ Tired of Ads? As the nation prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, NCSL gathered a trio of experts to discuss the origin stories of their states. Our group included Tim Powers, chief technology and outreach officer in the Alaska State Legislature; Paul Smith, clerk of the House of Representatives in New Hampshire; and Pev Squire, a professor of political science at the University of Missouri, and one of the nation's experts on the history of state legislatures. We discussed the status of each state at the time of the American Revolution, how the state's constitutions were written, and some other unusual history, such as New Hampshire crafting the nation's first state constitution, largely out of necessity, and the remarkable brevity of the Alaskan Constitution. This podcast is part of NCSL's annual Legislative Staff Week, which celebrates the innumerable contributions legislative staff make to the effectiveness of our state legislatures. fWotD Episode 3281: 1998–99 Gillingham F.C. season Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 29 April 2026, is 1998–99 Gillingham F.C. season.During the 1998–99 English football season, Gillingham F. C. competed in the Football League Second Division, the third tier of the English football league system. It was the 67th season in which Gillingham competed in the Football League, and the 49th since the club was voted back into the league in 1950. The club signed two new forwards, each for a new club record transfer fee, but started the season in poor form, winning only one of the first eight league games. The team then went on a much-improved run, being undefeated for 17 league games, and began challenging for promotion to the Football League First Division. Gillingham finished the regular season in fourth place in the Second Division, qualifying for the play-offs for promotion to the First Division. After defeating Preston North End in the semi-finals, they played Manchester City at Wembley Stadium in the final. Gillingham were 2–0 up with less than ten minutes remaining but conceded two late goals, and Manchester City won the subsequent penalty shoot-out to gain promotion.Gillingham also reached the southern section semi-final of the Football League Trophy, but were eliminated from both the FA Cup and the Football League Cup in the first round. The team played 56 competitive matches, winning 26, drawing 16 (including the play-off final), and losing 14. Carl Asaba was the team's leading goalscorer with 22 goals. Paul Smith made the most appearances during the season, playing in 54 of the team's 56 matches. The highest attendance recorded at the club's home ground, Priestfield Stadium, was 10,400 for the visit of Manchester City. Despite leading the team to the play-off final, manager Tony Pulis was dismissed from his job shortly afterwards amid allegations of gross misconduct. He sued the club for unfair dismissal and accepted an out-of-court settlement. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:09 UTC on Wednesday, 29 April 2026.For the full current version of the article, see 1998–99 Gillingham F.C. season on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Arthur.

Dear Wonderful Reader,Tuesday, March 17th, 2026, marked 4 years since I freed myself from the shackles of my corporate job. Four years is a decent chunk of time. For the same duration as my undergraduate degree, I've been frolicking around Mexico City, perfecting my Spanish and waking up every day to the joy of being alive. How have I survived without a regular paycheck? And, more importantly, have I learned anything that's useful to you?It has been mostly a dream, but this quit-my-job-aversary comes at a particularly difficult time. I've barely made $2,000 this quarter, not even close to my personal OKR of $15k. Selling some of my index fund investments to pay my rent makes me feel like I'm failing at being an adult. Then again, I did take six months off client work to launch my second book, get it funded on Kickstarter in just 12 days, and get featured in The New York Times. Still, it's hard to see the beauty in all that I've accomplished when reality is currently kicking my ass.As you know, last week I was hit by a family emergency, causing me to fork out a couple thousand dollars more to fly to LA and say goodbye to my grandmother, who it seemed was on her deathbed. I sat with her in the hospital for five days as she went through a heart operation, reflecting on life in a mortal-imperative kind of way, while somehow helping to nurse her back to health. It was a close call. Not every day is sunshine and roses.Sometimes those deeper, existential questions irk me. Am I really that much better off than before I burned my New York 9-5 life to the ground back in 2022? However, all it takes is a five-minute conversation with another software engineer who hates his life to knock my own sense back into me. I've definitely made the right choice.I'm definitely not in the same place in this “creative career” as when I started. My direction is clearer and narrower in a way that's motivating. I have a product to sell. I have workshops to teach. My path has a lot more shape, but it's not easier. In fact, I'm still suffering. Yet I am following the advice of Graham Weaver, from my favorite episode of Lenny's Podcast:“Life is suffering, so make sure you pick something worth suffering for.” That's how this feels right now. It's a lot of work, but I'm much happier doing this than sending Sean a stupid, boring spreadsheet. (If you remember, in my corporate tech career, I worked with more men named Sean than with women on my teams, lol). Here are four lessons I've learned in my fourth year of freedom.A second date?

A new report shows access to nearby nature in the U.S. is not equal and the gap is closely tied to race and income. Researchers say Indigenous communities are among those most affected. The Mountain West News Bureau's Kaleb Roedel has more. Communities of color are three times more likely than white communities to live in places with severe nature loss — fewer parks, fewer trees, more pollution. That is thanks in part to resource extraction and the rapid development of natural spaces. Researchers say that is significant for tribal areas, where land is closely tied to cultural traditions and food systems. Rena Payan with Justice Outside, which co-produced the report, says losing nearby nature isn't just about scenery. “Nature deprivation isn’t just about the aesthetics of who has access to ‘big nature.' It’s also about who has access to clean air and clean water.” The report also highlights Indigenous-led solutions. On the Navajo Nation, local groups are restoring native grasslands and wildlife habitat. In Alaska, Native organizations are protecting salmon streams and coastal ecosystems that support subsistence. Researchers say efforts grounded in Indigenous stewardship could help close what they call the nation's growing nature gap. Reliable high-speed internet is still out of reach for many tribal communities. A new report highlights ongoing barriers to broadband access in Indian Country. Daniel Spaulding has more. The report from the Urban Institute says many Indigenous communities lack reliable high-speed internet, especially in rural areas. Recent federal investments have helped expand broadband in some tribal communities, but gaps remain. Tomi Rajninger is a co-author of the report. “In certain parts of the country, especially in Indian Country and a lot of rural communities, folks have a lot less access to high speed broadband than other parts of the U.S.” The Urban Institute's Gabe Samuels says geography is one of the biggest challenges. “Because of the historic way where a lot of tribes are relocated, they’re often located in maybe more remote rural areas that are physically harder to access, it’s just kind of compounds the challenge to accessing.” Rajninger and Samuels both say allowing tribes to manage their own broadband infrastructure will be key to improving access. American bison inside a pen at Genesee Park near Golden, Colo. on March 6, 2026. (Courtesy Denver Parks and Recreation) American bison are a symbol of the West that might have vanished from this landscape entirely, if not for conservation efforts. As KJZZ's Gabriel Pietrorazio reports, the city of Denver donates bison from a long-established herd to tribes and nonprofits each year. Snow powdered the 34 bison inside a pen while tribes blessed them. Eleven went to the Navajo Nation. The rest were sent to the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, a Lakota nonprofit, Buffalo First, in South Dakota, and the Denver-based Tall Bull Memorial Council. This keystone species once roamed the Great Plains, but faced the brink of extinction. In 1908, the Denver Zoo had only 18 animals left in captivity, but they would help form a herd near Golden, Colo. The city has transferred more than 170 buffalo into tribal hands. (Courtesy Six Nations Iroquois Cultural Center) In New York state, more than 900 acres of land is returning to Indigenous care. The Six Nations Iroquois Cultural Center, Paul Smith's College, the Nature Conservancy, and the Adirondack Land Trust joined in the land-back partnership. The Nature Conservancy purchased 600 acres of land for $1.1 million from the college and transferred ownership to the Six Nations Iroquois Cultural Center. The cultural center will privately own and steward the land. The land trust has already transferred 300 acres of adjoining land to the cultural center. Today on the podcast I am joined by the legendary Stuart Trevor - founder of AllSaints. And now his latest project Stuart Trevor.I wanted to speak to Stuart because this podcast is about living before you run out of hours - and Stuart embodies this more than most. He started All Saints in the 90s and built it into a cult brand - dressing rockstars like Kings of Leon, The Who, Depeche Mode, Placebo and Destinys Child and Gwen Stefani - at its peak it had over 200 stores worldwide across 25 countries, with hundreds of millions of revenue. But he went on to sell it. Stuart had previously been scouted by two of the biggest fashion brands at the time - Paul Smith and Reiss - and ended up joining Reiss and working under David Reiss' tutelage for a while until he plucked the courage up to start his own brand. The shop has changed a lot now, it's a world away from the All Saints that Trevor poured his love and soul into - so this is a story of building what should exist, letting go, and moving on to a new passion in your next chapter. It's also a story of what happens when you seek to optimise JOY and FUN and not just productivity and efficiency. Much needed in today's world. Hosted on Acast. Former military intelligence officer and Stargate program veteran Dr. Paul H. Smith reveals the CIA's classified history of psychic spying and explains how the military weaponized human consciousness to remote view targets across time and space in episode 237 of the Far Out with Faust podcast.Dr. Paul H. Smith is a retired Major who served 20 years in the U.S. military, serving as a tactical intelligence officer with the 101st Airborne Division during Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and as a strategic intelligence officer for the Defense Intelligence Agency. For seven years, he was a primary member of the government's secret remote viewing program at Fort Meade, where he served as an operational remote viewer, instructor, and unit historian. After retiring in 1996, he earned a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in the philosophy of mind to further explore the hard problem of consciousness and its implications for non-physical realities. In this conversation, Faust and Dr. Paul H. Smith explore the high-stakes world of Project 8200 and the administrative skepticism that led to the program's official closure in 1995. They discuss the democratic nature of ESP, debunking the myth that one must have a special gift to be successful. By examining the redacted files of SRI International and the military classification of anomaly targets, they reveal a legacy of psychic intelligence that remains one of the government's most controversial paranormal secrets. In this episode: - The Stargate Origins: How a rumor about a psychic on the Nautilus submarine sparked a psychotronics arms race with the Soviet Union. - The Cooked CIA Report: Why the 1995 analysis used to justify closing Stargate only examined 40 out of 3,000 operational sessions. - Post-Stargate Secrets: Compelling evidence from whistleblowers that remote viewing programs may still exist within the NSA or other hidden government tiers. - Stanford Research Institute: The startling SRI discovery that remote viewing is an inborn human skill rather than a rare gift. - The Legend of Pat Price: A look at the most significant figure in remote viewing history and the suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. - Project 8200: The classified exploration of alleged UFO bases and encounters with non-human intelligence. - The Mars Sessions: A deep dive into the famous remote viewing experiences involving the Red Planet. - The Heaven's Gate Impact: How sensational claims and tragedies have historically damaged the public perception of serious consciousness research. - Administrative Cynicism: Why the CIA's decision to end Stargate was more about seizing personnel slots than actual program failure. - The Hard Problem: Why physicalist science struggles to explain a consciousness that isn't limited by the physical brain. This isn't just a discussion about spies and psychics. It is a radical look at military intelligence that proves our highest level defense agencies spent decades using consciousness as a legitimate weapon to pierce the boundaries of time and space.Check Out Dr. Paul H. As challenging as it is to execute a large-scale banquet or orchestrate the line in a busy restaurant, it can't compare to that first time you stand in front of a class filled with students – some of whom who are excited to learn while others are not quite sure. You may know "how" tasks are accomplished in the kitchen, your taste receptors are likely fine-tuned, and your ability to problem-solve is never questioned, but now, it's all about different learning styles, patience, coaxing with encouragement while never faltering from your high standards, critiquing instead of criticizing, and giving the right amount of attention to each member of the class. Transitioning from operations chef to teacher is challenging and rewarding at the same time. Join CAFÉ Talks Podcast for a chat with Chef Kevin McCarthy from Paul Smith's College as he reflects on his experience in doing just that.
