Former colleague Tyler Davidson tapped into the making of this delightful new travel tome born during the pandemic, as well as Maria's observations from her many years covering travel and meetings, and how a group of senior ladies meeting in the Cape to play cards was treated to a private performance by Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, among many other decidedly quirky tales and travel tips.

When Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis became First Lady of the United States over sixty years ago, she stepped into the public spotlight. Although Jackie is perhaps best known for her two highly-publicized marriages, her legacy has endured beyond twentieth-century pop culture and she remains an object of public fascination today. Drawing on a range of sources– from articles penned for the women's pages of local newspapers, to esteemed national periodicals, to fan magazines and film– Our Jackie: Public Claims on a Private Life (NYU Press, 2024) evaluates how media coverage of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis changed over the course of her very public life. Jackie's interactions with and framing by the American media reflect the changing attitudes toward American womanhood. Over the course of four decades, Jackie was alternatively praised for her service to others, and pilloried for her perceived self-interest. In Our Jackie, Karen M. Dunak argues that whether she was portrayed as a campaign wife, a loyal widow, a selfish jetsetter, or a mature career woman, the history of Jackie's highly publicized life demonstrates the ways in which news, entertainment, politics, and celebrity evolved and intertwined over the second half of the twentieth century. Examining the intimate chronicles of this famous First Lady's life, Our Jackie suggests that media coverage of this enigmatic public figure revealed as much about the prevailing views of women in America– how they should behave and whom they should serve– as it did about Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis as an individual. Send us a textWealthy Democrats Flock to London Real Estate After Trump's Election WinFollowing Donald Trump's recent election victory, a notable trend has emerged: affluent Democrats are increasingly purchasing luxury homes in London. Becky Fatemi of Sotheby's International Realty and Marco Previero of R3Location have reported significant upticks in inquiries and relocations from wealthy Americans. These buyers are seeking a "safety net" due to their opposition to Trump's policies. High-end rental properties are particularly in demand, as many are opting to rent due to the urgency of their moves and high stamp duty taxes on property purchases. Despite recent tax changes, including increased stamp duties and the end of favorable tax regimes for non-domiciled individuals, London remains a prime destination for these buyers. Are the Super Rich Really Abandoning Britain?Charlie Mullins, a notable figure who sold Pimlico Plumbers for £145 million, announced his departure from the UK, citing inheritance tax as a primary reason. Mullins' move is part of a broader trend where high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) are considering leaving the UK. Henley & Partners estimate a net loss of 9,500 HNWIs this year, driven by factors such as the end of the non-dom regime, tighter inheritance tax relief, increased national insurance costs, and high stamp duties on second homes. Despite the complexity and personal considerations involved in relocating, wealth managers report increased client interest in moving to destinations like Singapore, Jersey, Switzerland, and the Middle East. While actual departures remain limited, the discussion around relocation continues to grow.Co-Living Firms Set to Revolutionize the Housing MarketProminent co-living companies have launched a campaign to promote their innovative rental housing model to local authorities, national policymakers, and investors. Co-living, which focuses on community, affordability, and convenience, offers private and communal spaces such as shared kitchens, coworking areas, gyms, and lounges. Rents typically include bills, and tenancy contracts are more flexible than traditional rentals. The 'Why Coliving' campaign, led by Conscious Coliving, features participants like urbanbubble, VervLife, and HUB. Supported by the British Property Federation, CBRE, and Cascade Communications, the campaign includes multimedia content and industry events to showcase how co-living can align with housing goals and provide benefits to various stakeholders.Tom Ford Makes Largest UK Property Purchase of 2024Tom Ford has made headlines with his purchase of a property in London's upscale Chelsea district for £80 million ($104 million), marking the largest residential real estate transaction in the UK for 2024. The property, a white stucco-fronted mansion in a garden square between Hyde Park and the River Thames, adds to Ford's extensive real estate portfolio, valued at over $300 million. This acquisition follows Ford's sale of a home in Regent's Park, as he anticipates new government tax hikes on high-value properties. Ford's portfolio includes notable properties such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's former Hamptons estate, a Palm Beach mansion, and Halston's former Manhattan townhouse. Since retiring from fashion, Ford has shifted his focus to his impressive real estate investments.Maximize your property wealth with London Property. Turn challenges into opportunities. Dr. Karen M. Dunak on How Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Represented American Womanhood

Today on the show we're talking about a woman you all have long known I admire — Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. I have read every book I can get my hands on about this former First Lady, American (and, really, global) icon, and one of the most famous women to ever live. We have even had many episodes of the show about her in the past. But today we're talking about the new book Our Jackie: Public Claims on a Private Life by Dr. Karen M. Dunak, which is out November 12, and instead of just looking at this remarkable woman's life, we're looking at this remarkable woman's life through the lens of how she represented American womanhood more broadly. As Karen writes in the book, “Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was a person, but she also served as a symbol of broader cultural expectations.” And what Karen found through her research here was totally fascinating. Jackie's designer Oleg Cassini called her “a powerful symbol for the United States,” and she held power as a public figure, both domestically and internationally. It goes without saying that American womanhood changed dramatically from 1960 and John F. Kennedy's election to the presidency and 1994 and Jackie's far too soon death. Jackie's life is examined through her time as a campaign wife to First Lady to widow to a wife again after remarrying Aristotle Onassis to becoming a career woman and an icon. As Karen writes in the book of Jackie, “She often followed a path of her own choosing, enduring the ebbs and flows of assessments about her much as she did the transition from campaign wife to first lady and then beyond. Response to her may have reflected broader ideas about American womanhood. But she was just being herself.” This book specifically zooms in on media coverage of Jackie and how that framed her narrative, and I gobbled it up. Here on the show today we have the pleasure of hosting Dr. Karen M. Dunak, professor and Arthur G. and Eloise Barnes Cole Chair of American History in the Department of History at Muskingum University. Prior to Our Jackie, Karen was the author of As Long as We Both Shall Love: The White Wedding in Postwar America, and she is a contributor to Of the People: A History of the United States. Her research interests include post-World War II U.S. history, American women's history, gender and sexuality, and social movements, and celebrity and media in U.S. history, and her work has appeared in many academic journals. I can't wait for you to hear what she has to say.   Our Jackie: Public Claims on a Private Life by Dr. Karen M. Dunak

Most people probably know Carole Radziwill from her time on The Real Housewives of New York City and while, don't get me wrong, I loved her on the show—that's nowhere near the most interesting part of her story. Carole is an extraordinarily talented journalist and had an esteemed career in the field, even working as a war correspondent at one point. She worked as a journalist and a producer for nearly two decades at ABC News, during which time she earned three Emmys. Carole married her fellow ABC News producer, Prince Anthony Radziwill—son of socialite Lee Radziwill and nephew of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis—on August 27, 1994; he died of cancer on August 10, 1999. Anthony's best friend was his cousin, John F. Kennedy Jr., and Carole's best friend was his wife, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. In the summer of 1999—which Carole refers to as “the summer of tragedy”—Carole knew the end of her husband's life was near. What she didn't know, of course, was that on July 16, 1999, John and Carolyn, along with Carolyn's sister, Lauren, would die in a plane crash. Carole lost the three people closest to her in less than a month of one another, all of them 40 years old and younger—Anthony had just turned 40 six days before his death. Of her life with Anthony, Carole writes in her brilliant memoir What Remains: A Memoir of Fate, Friendship, and Love, which came out in 2005, that “We are young and happy and have all the time in the world,” except, tragically, they don't. The book tells priceless anecdotes, like how hilarious Carolyn was—she left Carole a note about her Gap sneakers saying that if she didn't get rid of them, their relationship couldn't continue in a growth-oriented way. Carolyn was selfless. She was compassionate. Interesting. She was a wonderful, caring, kind friend. One of my favorite anecdotes from the book was when she declined signing an autograph for someone, saying “You don't want mine. You want Carole's. She has three Emmys.” Carolyn had this ability to make someone feel like the only person in the room—the most important person in the room. Carole writes in What Remains “She made me believe I was captivating.” The entire world knows who Carolyn is; very few got to call her a best friend. In this book, we get to learn what it was like to be Carolyn's best friend. So many of our conversations in this series have been about John—and rightfully so, as he was and, quite frankly, still is captivating. But this episode is basically all about Carolyn. Carole writes that both she and Carolyn were not the women that people expected Anthony and John to end up with. John, by the way, was already, devastatingly, writing the eulogy of his cousin and best friend Anthony before John himself died. Who would have ever thought John, and Carolyn, for that matter, would be lost before Anthony? On that awful night of July 16, as the 16th turned into the 17th, Carole was one of the first to learn that John, Carolyn, and Lauren's plane was missing. She describes learning they were missing and the time between that and learning that they had crashed “the terrifying quiet.” She must have felt like time was suspended in space. The lack of answers. The ambiguity. The hope. The fear. All of it. After Anthony died, she left ABC News to write what became What Remains, which, let me tell you—the topic is fascinating on its own, but the writing? The writing is unmatched. It, not surprisingly, became a New York Times bestseller upon its release, and we're talking all about it today.   What Remains: A Memoir of Fate, Friendship, and Love by Carole Radziwill

As our series honoring the tragic plane crash that killed John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and Lauren Bessette continues in the leadup to the 25-year anniversary of the crash on July 16, I'm so happy to welcome William D. Cohan to the show, who wrote a book not just about his friend from Andover, John, but also about three other friends from the prep school that lost their lives far too soon. This is such an interesting concept for a book—in his book Four Friends: Promising Lives Cut Short, which came out in 2019, William introduces us to four of his friends from boarding school who all died far, far too soon. One of them is John, who we spend the bulk of today's episode talking about, but we also meet Jack Berman, the child of impoverished Holocaust survivors, who achieves the American dream—only to have his life ended in a senseless act of violence. Then we have Will Daniel, the grandson of President Harry Truman and the son of the managing editor of The New York Times, who does everything to escape a family legacy he's ultimately trapped by. He dies tragically, as does Harry Bull, who—like John would as well—takes an inexplicable and devastating risk on a beautiful summer day that ultimately ends his life. Even the story of John—who, of course, we all think we know—is told through a new lens in this book. This book will make you appreciate life and realize how very, very fragile it really is. All of these men met at Andover, the most elite of American boarding schools, and went on to forge lives for themselves, lives that, as William writes, were “ended just as they were getting going.” This book gives us a glimpse into John in his Andover years, specifically, and William writes about what it was like to know a young John, what it was like to meet Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and so much insight into John, who lost his life far too soon as just 38 years old.   William D. Cohan is a journalist perhaps most known for covering Wall Street and high finance; he's written for Vanity Fair as a special correspondent and writes regularly for The New York Times, The Financial Times, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, and Fortune, and is an on-air contributor for CNBC. He's also written other bestselling books, like The Last Tycoons and House of Cards: A Tale of Hubris and Wretched Excess on Wall Street, Money and Power: How Goldman Sachs Came to Rule the World, The Price of Silence (which is about the Duke lacrosse scandal that gripped the nation), and Why Wall Street Matters. Since Four Friends came out in 2019, he has published the 2022 book Power Failure: The Rise and Fall of an American Icon about the General Electric Company. He was a senior Wall Street M&A investment banker for 17 years and also appears regularly on MSNBC, CNN, BBC, and Bloomberg TV, where he is a contributing editor. I enjoyed my conversation with him so much, and I know you will enjoy it, too.   Four Friends: Promising Lives Cut Short by William D. Cohan

Emmy Award Winning Actor and Daytime TV's favorite villain, Thaao Penghlis, recently released his cookbook: "Seducing Celebrities One Meal at a Time." This Australian-born Renaissance Man has traveled the world and hosted memorable dinner parties in his Hollywood Hills home with high profile celebrities. While this cookbook imagines the perfect meals for celebrities he has met, his actress friend Doris Roberts once wrote a thank you note praising his meticulous detail to the ambiance, food, and presentation. Kourabiedes literally changed his life. While Thaao was working as an apprentice at an art gallery in Manhattan, Jacqueline Kennedy knocked on the door. The gallery owner was out to lunch so Thaao invited then Mrs. Kennedy to have some tea and kourabiedes which he had baked. How ironic that the son of Greek immigrants would serve Greek wedding cookies to the future Mrs. Onassis. Of course the featured entree that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis inspired was Thaao's Moussaka. recipe. He shares his delicious touches to this Greek dish including shiitake mushrooms and peeling the eggplants to remove any bitterness. Thaao also highlights delightful stories about other celebrities during our Kitchen Chat. Thaao hosts a podcast called "Thaao Penghlis' Lost Treasures," a thrilling detective story-style exploration of Greece's greatest contribution to the world's literature, the poet Homer. Here is Thaao's great wisdom for life and success. Never allow people to be the leaders of your life or tell you what's next. I believe you plant your own seeds and trust.   If someone's not opening the door, it's meant that you look elsewhere. Don't let them be your dominant in the ways they've taken you away from something. Out create them.   Make your life great. Don't shortchange it. Don't let people dismiss you. If they do it means that you have just been blessed by someone who has let you go onto another side of your track.   Be the cause and not the effect. Enjoy the great recipes and stories in Seducing Celebrities One Meal at a Time. Savor the day! For more Celebrity Chef interviews and recipes visit Kitchenchat.info

A Famous Lost Words drinking game?  Is this REALLY a good idea? Tom proposes a non-alcoholic version that is based solely on his own (many) verbal quirks. For our last episode of season 9, we begin with Carly Simon in conversation with broadcaster Ingrid Schumacher in 1987.  This was a great year for Carly because she had just worked on the soundtrack for the movie “Heartburn” and her new album “Coming Around Again” would prove to be a comeback for her. She talks about work with Mike Nichols on “Heartburn”, tussling with Clive Davis on song choices and how her close friend Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis convinced her to write a book.             Following that is a really fun encounter with the guys from Train, from a morning show encounter with Roger Ashby and Marilyn Denis.  The interview, from 2012, captures the goofiness of lead singer Pat Monahan.  Then, we have an early ‘80s chat with Gary Wright, who passed away in September of 2023. Gary only had three significant chart hits, but he was a well-respected musician who worked with George Harrison on a number of projects.  He also made synthesizers a staple on Top 40 radio.             We close out the show with a great chat with Triumph, a band that started in a bowling alley in Mississauga, Ontario forge their place in rock history.  The Canadian power trio are legendary here in their home country, but also had a great run in the U.S. and beyond.  Bassist Mike Levine has a ton of fun chatting with broadcaster Rick Ringer in this very entertaining and lively 1983 interview.

In episode 16 astrologers Kristina Martin and Tara Redfield take on another "throuple", this time a classic political/celebrity twist pertaining to John K. Kennedy and his relationships with his then wife Jackie Onassis and international bombshell Marilyn Monroe.  Looking into JFK's natal birth chart, we saw a Libra Rising with Gemini Sun, making him charming, airy, light-hearted and intelligent. As we looked deeper though, we found he had some high expectations when it came to his relationships. Jackie O. certainly fulfilled those expectations - as her natal birth chart showed flamboyant star power, a need to be of service and a paradoxical penchant for privacy. Then we have Marilyn, whose birth chart shows the seemingly naïve, dream girl that, in actuality, was a forever student with big brains of her own. Fun fact, all three had prominent Gemini placements, showing us the need for variety, flirtation and curiosity! Which relationship worked best? Who were the real stars of the show? Synopsis On today's date in 1971, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., was inaugurated with a gala performance of a new work by Leonard Bernstein. Entitled “Mass,” this was a musical and visual extravaganza which reinterpreted the text of the Latin liturgy and involved more than 200 singers, dancers, and instrumentalists. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis had asked Bernstein to write a piece to open the new Center but was conspicuous by her absence. President Richard Nixon also chose to stay away, rightly fearing that Bernstein's “Mass” would be interpreted as an embarrassing protest against the war in Vietnam. The Washington Post's front-page review, titled “A Reaffirmation of Faith,” was glowing in its praise, but Time magazine's assessment was condescending, quoting some New York wits who dubbed it the “Mitzvah Solemnis.” The New York Times review was brutal, calling Bernstein's Mass “a combination of superficiality and pretentiousness . . . [and] the greatest mélange of styles since the ladies' magazine recipe for steak fried in peanut butter and marshmallow sauce.” But Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, when she finally did hear Bernstein's work, sent the composer an inscribed photograph which read: “Lenny – I loved it, yes, I did, and I love you, too. Thank you for making ‘Mass' so beautiful.” Music Played in Today's Program Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) –Sanctus, from Mass (Empire Brass) Telarc 80159 Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) –Simple Song, from Mass (Boston Pops; John Williams, cond.) Hadley and Alyssa uncover the fascinating history of Grey Gardens, the grand East Hampton estate of Big Edie and Little Edie Beale—eccentric aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Lee Radziwill—that was made famous in a 1975 documentary by Albert and David Maysles. After spotlighting the iconic women and their home, the co-hosts unpack its gradual downfall: Over time, the property fell into disrepair and was overrun by cats and raccoons (and perhaps something else not of this realm?). Little Edie held onto the property until two years after her mother died in 1977. Big Edie's spirit is said to watch over the house. Among the believers is author and Washington Post journalist Sally Quinn, who purchased the home from Little Edie in 1979 and swears it's haunted.
