Saira Baker chats with senior curator of photographs at the Royal Collection Trust and curator of the exhibition, Alessandro Nasini, in The King's Gallery at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh.‘Royal Portraits: A Century of Photography' charts the evolution of royal portrait photography from the 1920s to the present day, revealing the stories behind the creation of some of the most iconic images of the British Monarchy.Bringing together more than 90 photographic prints, proofs and documents from the Royal Collection and the Royal Archives, the exhibition – which follows a successful run in London – will also consider the artistic and technological advances in photography as it evolved into a recognised art form.Visitors will see glamorous images from the first half of the 20th century, taken by some of the most respected photographers of the era. All of the photographs in the exhibition are vintage prints – the original works produced by the photographer – and the earliest works date from the 1920s and 30s, the golden age of the society photographer. In the mid-20th century, no royal photographer had a greater impact on shaping the monarchy's public image than Cecil Beaton. The exhibition will present some of Beaton's most memorable photographs, taken over six decades. These include Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's famed 1939 shoot in the Buckingham Palace Gardens, dressed in gowns designed by Norman Hartnell, and Beaton's original Coronation portraits of Queen Elizabeth II – arguably the most prestigious photography commission of the century. The bold and colourful later photographs in the exhibition will demonstrate the extraordinary variety, power, and at times playfulness of royal portrait photography over the past four decades. These works range from Andy Warhol's diamond-dust-sprinkled screen print of Queen Elizabeth II to well-known photographs by David Bailey, Nick Knight, Annie Leibovitz and more. The exhibition runs until 7 September 2025. While 2024 may not have brought the shocks of cyclones, Prime Ministerial resignations or election campaigns, there’s a lot to digest from the last year. The Government delivered tax relief, gang crackdowns and a Fast Track bill, while dealing with controversy over Māori relations, smoking laws and apartment entitlements. Te Pāti Māori led the fight back against the Treaty Principles Bill, while Labour rebuilt from its election loss, and the Greens contended with rogue MPs and personal tragedy. Inflation started to fall, but a tough economy saw thousands lose their jobs, including the end of iconic news brands. Māoridom farewelled a King and welcomed a new Queen, while the British Monarchy was dealt a double cancer blow. Globally, conflict continued across Ukraine and Gaza, while the ‘year of elections’ delivered a new PM for the UK, and an old President for the US. And fans around the world found time to hold space for Brat Summer, Wicked, the Menendez Brothers and the Eras tour. Today on The Front Page, for our final episode of 2024, we’re discussing all the highs and lows of the year with Coast host Lorna Riley, and NZ Herald business editor at large, Liam Dann. Drawing on historical documents, hidden connections, and little-known facts, our guest uncovers a web of influence and power that suggests the monarchy's reach extends far beyond British shores, subtly shaping the course of American history. GUEST: Josh Reeves is an independent documentary filmmaker, researcher, and truth-seeker known for his deep dives into hidden histories, secret societies, and the mysteries that mainstream media often overlooks. His latest film, *The Inner World*, takes viewers on an extraordinary journey beneath the surface—both literally and figuratively—as it explores the possibility of ancient underground civilizations and the hidden forces that may be shaping human history. In this episode, we dive into the fascinating history of Twinings, one of the world's oldest tea brands, with Stephen Twining, the 10th-generation family member and Global Brand Ambassador. Stephen shares Twinings' remarkable journey spanning over 300 years, from its origins in 1706 London to becoming a globally recognized symbol of quality tea. We discuss the brand's unwavering commitment to quality, the power of innovation, and how it adapted through monumental events such as the World Wars.We also explore Twinings' approach to the Chinese market, the impact of its responsible sourcing programme Sourced with Care, and the evolving trends among younger consumers. Stephen offers insights into Twinings' resilience and legacy, while highlighting the importance of staying true to brand values and maintaining relevance through thoughtful innovation.Whether you're a tea enthusiast, an entrepreneur, or a history lover, this episode will leave you with valuable lessons on endurance, adaptability, and brand heritage.Key Highlights:• Twinings' Origins & Commitment to Quality: Founded in 1706 by Thomas Twining, Twinings began as a coffee house in London before becoming the first dry tea and coffee shop. Twinings has consistently upheld a “quality over quantity” philosophy, which has been the cornerstone of its success for over 300 years with no compromise, even during difficult periods like the Tea Act crisis and the World Wars.• Innovation Meets Tradition: While the company's roots lie in traditional tea blending, Twinings has embraced modern innovations like herbal teas, Superblends, and even sparkling tea to stay relevant, especially among younger generations.• Understanding Global Markets: Twinings carefully adapts to local markets, such as China, by understanding consumer preferences rather than simply exporting its products. The focus is on providing additional choices that align with local tastes.• Tea Sourcing: Twinings' Sourced with Care initiative, founded by Twinings in 2016, works to help improve the quality of life of the communities who grow its teas and herbs, aiming to drive positive change through empowering women, supporting incomes and improving living standards.• Royal Warrant as a Mark of Excellence: Twinings has held a Royal Warrant since 1837, continuously serving the British Monarchy through various reigns, symbolizing excellence not just in product quality but also in sustainability and corporate responsibility.• Guidance to Emerging Brands: To remain true to core values, focus on long-term growth over short-term gains, and build gradually with a strong foundation, particularly for brands in volatile markets like China.

British Rule over America failed nearly 250 years ago, in part when the British Monarchy thought they would impose a tax on tea. The revolt was called the Boston Tea Party. The rest is history. Historically, America has blossomed under less taxes. It's hysterical to think that the National Treasury Employees Union is a prime example of the Deep State AGAIN closing ranks to protect their 'gravy train'. Elon Musk cut Twitter jobs by 80%. Musk says he'll volunteer to do the same to Washington D.C. when Trump gets in. These 80,000+ IRS agents will cost American taxpayers $80 billion. American presidents act almost like elected kings, with vast powers and very little accountability. But that wasn't the plan. Responding to anti-federalist warnings that presidents would eventually degenerate into a type of monarchy, Federalists like Tench Coxe, John Dickinson, James Iredell, and many others went into great detail explaining how the power of the executive branch would be extremely limited in comparison to the British Monarchy they fought a long, bloody war to free themselves from. The post Executive Branch: President, not a King (Federalist Arguments) first appeared on Tenth Amendment Center.

So how the hell does one family stay in power that long. Well long story short there's been a lot of them, so many in fact we're only covering the first dozen or so, but there's some real shitbags in there for your listening pleasure.

Send us a Text Message. In 1949, 13 year old Pamela Smedley boarded a ship with 27 other girls from a Catholic orphanage in Britain. The nuns told them they were going on a day trip. The girls were excited, happy to be out in the world, on an adventure. According to Pamela, quote “We thought it would be like going to Scarborough for the day because we were so innocent and naive.” But they weren't going to Scarborough. They were going to Australia, for good. Four extremely difficult decades would pass before Pamela would return home to Britain and finally reunite with her family, her mother who had been waiting for her all those years, wondering. The girls on that ship were part of Britain's child migrant program which sent an estimated 150,000 children to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Rhodesia during the 19th and 20th centuries. The press at the time reported that these children were being sent to loving families, taken into homes, and raised in caring environments. But did you know, that was all a lie? Before he was King Edward VII, Queen Victoria's son "Dirty Bertie" lived a few different lives. There was his endless womanizing and brothel-patronizing, which prompted that nickname, as well as "Edward the Caresser." But after a particular romantic scandal that Queen Victoria blamed for his father's death, Bertie married and fulfilled his duties to the empire to produce heirs (if not to produce a monogamous marriage). Prince Albert Victor was the eldest son of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (the future Edward VII) and Alexandra of Denmark. As such, he was second in line to the English throne. A poor student, even his own siblings developed disdain for him, but for a time he seemed to come into his own in the Navy. This was cut short by his obligation to attend Cambridge, where his lackluster intellect again asserted itself. All of this was awkward enough for Queen Victoria and The Prince of Wales, but things would only get more awkward for Prince Albert Victor. In 1889, after Metropolitan Police raided a male brothel, rumors swirled that the young man was a patron. While no charges were ever brought and no concrete evidence was provided, the blow to his reputation made finding a suitable bride difficult for his match-making grandmother. Even worse, as the reign of terror known as the Jack the Ripper Murders gripped London in 1888, Prince Albert Victor was floated as a suspect. Whatever the truth, his story would come to an end in an influenza pandemic when he was just 28 years old, changing the course of the British Monarchy, and leaving his brother to ascend as George V. Take a fascinating journey back in time to visit a few British royal rulers with an intimate look at their reigns as well as at their majestic coronations.  British author and historian Tracy Borman joins The Gilded Gentleman for this unique look at history based on her book "Crown & Sceptre: A New History of the British Monarchy from William the Conqueror to King Charles III". In this second part of our coronation celebration, historian and author Tracy Borman, joint Chief Curator of Historic Royal Palaces, takes us into the world of  the Tudors to discuss just what Henry VIII and his chief minister Thomas Cromwell were really like.  We move on to the glorious rule of Elizabeth I whom Tracy says "makes us fall in love with queens".  Entering the 19th century, we look at the world of Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales who became Edward VII.  Tracy gives us a look at each of these monarch's coronations and surprisingly how they compare to that of King Charles III. If you are a royal watcher or lover of British history, don't miss this show - we end the episode with a discussion of just how the current monarchy fits into the long line of history.

For at least 1,500 years, since the mists swirling around the Dark Ages began to clear, the British Isles have had monarchical rulers. For hundreds of years, they were the central figures of the nation: the focus of its politics and society, consecrated by God, endorsed (or not) by the nobility, the arbiters of its arts and culture, the makers of its laws, the directors of its government and the leaders in its wars.Stephen Bates is an award-winning author and journalist, most recently, the Royalty and Religious Affairs correspondent for the Guardian from 2000-2012. Stephen joins Dan to explore how and why the monarchy in these islands has endured and evolved, and what will become of its survival in the future. This episode was produced by Hannah Ward and James Hickmann and edited by Dougal Patmore. If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today! To download the History Hit app please go to the Android or Apple store. On today's show, we take you to London for Queen Elizabeth II's funeral. Plus, the colonial legacy and potential future of the monarchy without her leadership.Read more: The coffin of Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest-serving monarch, was laid in the royal vault at Windsor Castle on Monday. The funeral procession marks the end of 10 days of national mourning. London correspondent Karla Adam describes how thousands of people camped near Westminster Abbey to watch the funeral procession. “There were sleeping bags. A lot of people brought toys or games or chess sets just to pass the time because they've been camping out for a day or two,” she said, while others watched from big screens across the city. The queen's passing has been marked around the world with tributes from world leaders and around-the-clock media coverage. But as foreign affairs columnist Ishaan Tharoor shares later in the show, it also sparked criticism of the monarchy's past and debates about the relevancy of the institution. “It's important to look at the queen in her own right as opposed to the queen as this icon of the empire,” Tharoor says. “It is also very hard to separate that, because what is the queen without being an icon of empire?”Follow The Post's live coverage of the funeral here.
