Today we're talking about skin and sunlight. Skin and sunlight have a complicated relationship. Sunlight helps our bodies produce vitamin D, which is essential for overall health. However, too much exposure can accelerate skin ageing and increase the risk of skin cancer. So how much sun is enough? Are most of us getting too little, or too much? And where does sunscreen fit into a healthy daily routine? I'm joined by Professor John McGrath to explore how sunlight affects our skin, and how to strike the perfect balance
Today we're exploring the impact of ultra-processed foods on young people. One of the big reasons ultra-processed foods have become so widespread is convenience. They offer quick, easy meals for people short on time - and few groups are more time-pressed than parents trying to feed young children. But does this convenience come at a cost? I'm joined by Harvard professor Dr Andy Chan, whose research is helping us understand how early exposure to ultra-processed food can shape future health.

We've hit number 50 on our list of the greatest things we make here, so I thought it would be nice to share some of my favourite moments, as well as your most replayed clips. Since we started The Factory Next Door, we've spent hours and hours hanging out with business owners, chatting to them on factory floors and in their offices. They come from different walks of life, creating a wide range of beautiful products. But there's a unifying factor that comes up time and again in our chats. An element that is repeatedly identified as being crucial to success. Family. Mum, Dad, Brother, Sister, Children – they are often credited with direction and drive. Even when they are not employed by the company, we hear about their influence on business strategy. We start in the city of Gloucester – and close to its beautiful cathedral sits the shirt-maker Emma Willis (Ep. 21). It's a company that makes shirts for royalty, actors, musicians, as well as for injured service personnel through its Style for Soldiers charity. In this clip, Emma reveals where her company's strong sense of societal responsibility comes from. For our second clip, we travel to Walthamstow, North London. Here, Han from Black Horse Lane Ateliers (Ep. 24) is explaining to us why he pivoted from making clothes for high street brands to launching his own label making the very finest jeans. For the final clip, we go back to the beginning, to the custom motorbike (Ep. 4). For this episode we went to hang out with husband-and-wife team Vic and Lin from Destiny Cycles – makers of the finest choppers this side of the Atlantic. In this clip, Lin discusses her pride for Vic's work. Say hello on Instagram @thefactorynextdoor Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this most replayed moment from Jordan's conversation with DJ Shipley, SEAL Team 6 operator DJ breaks down the mindset, culture and obsession that separates DEVGRU from every other fighting force on the planet. DJ explains why hard skills alone will never be enough without the right mindset, how elite operators learn to read teammates through body language alone in the chaos of a firefight, and why the men at the very top of Tier 1 units would pay to do the job rather than be paid for it. I'm joined by wellness expert Liz Earle and nutritional scientist Dr Federica Amati to separate evidence from exaggeration. From red light therapy to cow fat, they'll reveal which trends are worth your time - and which are best left behind.
Have you ever been consumed by someone you knew wasn't healthy for you? Replayed conversations on loop? Lived for a text back? Felt more alive with someone unavailable than with someone who was fully present? You are not weak. You are not crazy. You are caught in what Brianne Davis-Gantt calls The Fantasy Loop™ — a 7-stage nervous system cycle that keeps people addicted to unavailable love, unavailable people, and unavailable versions of themselves. In this pivotal episode of Secret Life Podcast, Brianne introduces The Fantasy Loop™ for the first time — the trademarked teaching framework she has spent years developing through her own recovery and her work with hundreds of clients. This is not about judging yourself. This is about finally understanding the cycle so you can break it.THE 7 STAGES OF THE FANTASY LOOP™:Stage 1 — Emotional EmptinessThe loop doesn't begin with a person. It begins with an inner void — loneliness, attachment wounds, unmet emotional needs, nervous system dysregulation. That emptiness becomes the doorway.Stage 2 — ActivationAn unavailable, inconsistent, or emotionally distant person appears and your nervous system lights up. What you think is chemistry is actually nervous system activation. This is where people confuse activation for love.Stage 3 — Fantasy ProjectionYour mind fills in the gaps. You stop seeing the real person. You project qualities onto them that don't exist and build an entire future based on potential, not reality. The brain becomes attached to the possibility instead of the person. The fantasy only thrives in uncertainty.Stage 4 — On and Off ReinforcementThe addiction deepens through intermittent reinforcement — just enough connection to keep you hooked, followed by withdrawal. Dopamine isn't driven by stability. It's driven by anticipation. This is why toxic attachments feel chemically addictive.Stage 5 — Obsession and Self-AbandonmentThe overthinking begins. Replaying conversations. Checking your phone. Losing your boundaries. Your world shrinks around the fantasy. The Fantasy Loop is not just about chasing someone. It's about abandoning yourself in the process.Stage 6 — Collapse and WithdrawalReality returns. They pull away, ghost, or the fantasy finally cracks. What follows isn't just heartbreak — it's withdrawal. Toxic attachment activates the same reward system as a chemical addiction. This is why people go back when they know it's hurting them.Stage 7 — ReattachmentInstead of healing the wound underneath, the brain searches for another high, another unavailable person, another fantasy. Different face. Same nervous system pattern. And the loop starts again.HOW TO BREAK THE FANTASY LOOP™:1. Awareness — you cannot heal a pattern you cannot see2. Regulate your nervous system — this is body-based attachment conditioning3. Heal the attachment wound underneath — anxious, avoidant, or dismissive4. Rebuild self-worth and boundaries from the inside out5. Choose reality over fantasy — and learn what real love actually feels likeYou are not broken. This is not a character flaw. This is a survival pattern. And survival patterns can be healed.Brianne Davis-Gantt is living proof.Resources at secretlifepodcast.comShare your secret: secretlifepodcast@icloud.com

We've hit number 50 on our list of the greatest things we make here, so I thought it would be nice to share some of my favourite moments, as well as your most replayed clips. Our manufacturers are undoubtedly facing strong headwinds. Many business owners tell me it's tougher now than it's been for decades. Despite this, on our travels around the country, we've met a few extraordinary people who have decided to face the challenge head on and buy a factory. In this compilation, we begin in Stoke-on-Trent, where we met the wonderful artist, Susan Rose (Ep. 41). Before asking her why she'd recently taken-over a pottery – I wanted to know from the previous-owner Tony, why he was exiting the family business. In Ep. 30 we met Paul Jacobs. He lives in the Netherlands but spends a lot of time in Sheffield these days. Can you remember why he bought scissor-maker Ernest Wright? For our third clip we stay in Sheffield, with Buffalo Systems – which makes outdoor clothing. Having just bought the factory, Ben Fogle and James Sleater (Ep. 42) invited us along to have a look around, but before asking them why they'd bought the brand – we wanted a quick gossip with the team. However, you're not the only one who has an impact on your health. Today, we're shining a light on a lesser-known form of depression. When we imagine depression, we often think of someone unable to get out of bed, someone who struggles to complete daily tasks. However, many people with depression are the exact opposite. They meet deadlines, achieve goals and appear successful. Yet, on the inside, they feel disconnected and distant from joy. This quieter, harder-to-spot condition is known as high-functioning depression. I'm joined by psychiatrist Dr. Judith Joseph and Professor Sarah Berry to unpack what high-functioning depression looks like, why it's so frequently missed, and how we should approach it. Sarah starts by asking for clarity on a word that is closely connected to this condition.

In this unseen conversation, Shi Heng Yi reflects on the purpose of Shaolin Temple Europe, the discipline of practice, and the quiet responsibility of passing knowledge from one generation to the next. Today, we're exploring the brain-gut axis We've all heard phrases like “gut instinct” or “trust your gut”. So, the question is: if they're so tightly intertwined, can treating one help heal the other? I'm joined by gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz to unravel the mystery of this connection - and find out how we can use it to our advantage.

Today we're looking at a novel way to improve our mental health. If I've learnt anything from hosting this podcast, it's just how interconnected all the systems in our body are. Nothing works in isolation, which means we often have to step back and look at the bigger picture if we want to improve a particular aspect of our health. With this in mind, let's shift our focus on mental health. Can we approach it from a different angle? Harvard nutritional psychiatrist Dr. Uma Naidoo is here to explain the science behind the gut-brain axis, and how you can help one to help the other.
Are you constantly worried your teen is making bad choices—and feel like consequences are the only way to “teach them a lesson”? You're not alone. And you're not wrong to care. But what if the very thing you're doing to prevent bad decisions is actually making them worse? In this episode, we're digging into one of the biggest parenting traps: punishing behavior instead of teaching the skills behind it. Because when your teen makes a risky, impulsive, or frustrating choice, it's easy to assume they're being careless, defiant, or just not thinking. But there's something much deeper going on—and once you see it, everything about how you respond will start to shift. This isn't about letting your teen “get away with it.” And it's definitely not about lowering your standards. In 2002, while serving as a Major in the Army Reserve and working civilian security between activations, he accepted an overnight post at an aging foundry built on old rail ground in east-central Florida. The assignment had a quiet reputation — officers rotated off it quickly — but no one ever explained why.During a heavy rainstorm, something crossed his headlights. What followed was not chaotic. It wasn't aggressive. It didn't even acknowledge him.He pursued it across wet sand between the buildings, issuing commands the way he had been trained to do. The ground recorded what moved through it.Then, abruptly, it stopped. Years later, after researching the history beneath that property, he found fragments that suggested the land may have been holding something far older than his shift that night. He does not describe it as a haunting.
