Bebe and Janet started watching True Beauty a few weeks ago, and in this episode give our initial thoughts through the first 4 episodes. We also discuss some of our favorite Korean drama romantic comedies, the parallels between Jane Austen romances and Kdramas, and some cheesy / annoying tropes we wish would forever be abolished. Topics: True Beauty Cha Eun Woo My ID is Gangnam Beauty (comparing the female lead in this vs. True Beauty) Jealousy Incarnate (Don't Dare to Dream) Love Alarm The Jane Austen similarities / Darcy archetype in Kdramas What's Wrong with Secretary Kim Park Min Young - too pretty to relate to? Yoo Inna and why we both love her Queen In Hyun's Man Shin Se Kyung (not our favorite) The 4 men to 1 woman ratio common in Kdrama romances You're Beautiful CONTACT / FOLLOW US: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/noperfectendingpod/ Email: bebeandjanet@gmail.com Spotify: http://spoti.fi/2KCR4BT Apple: http://apple.co/3fp2Lam If you enjoy our content, consider making a small recurring contribution at https://anchor.fm/coasttocoastshow/support --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/noperfectending/support
Be the smartest coolest man on the planet and travel forward three hundred years through time to win your woman's heart, while also saving a queen, your country and the world (probably!), because this week Evie is discussing the remarkable 2012 Korean drama QUEEN INHYUN'S MAN (also known as QUEEN AND I), which stars Ji Hyun Woo and Yoo Inna. This kdrama starts out as a fluffy fantasy romance yet soon morphs into something much deeper, an achingly beautiful portrayal of star-crossed lovers and a romance that transcends time, space and even death itself. Another quickie! In this mini episode we talk about Because I Want to Talk, a new talk show hosted by sought after Korean actor Lee Dong Wook... where he pretty much gets to flex his bromance with longtime friend and co-star Gong Yoo. I also ramble a bit about two Korean dramas that starred Lee Dong Wook — 2005’s My Girl with Lee Dahae and more recently Touch My Heart with Yoo Inna. Yup, its sorta a LDW special. It's time for Second Impressions! We've selected the following four dramas to see if the second episodes live up to their promise. 6:16 - Kim HyeJa, Han JiMin and Nam JooHyuk continue to tug at our heartstrings in the JTBC drama, "Radiant" (눈이 부시게). If only we weren't so annoyed by the time turner plot holes! Judy is surprisingly more positive about this show than Teresa. 21:10 - "My Fellow Citizens!" (국민여러분!) is a lighthearted KBS2 drama starring Choi SiWon, Lee YooYoung and Kim MinJung. Teresa is worried that the fun con artist/heist concept may get derailed by the politics. Judy is excited by all the powerful female characters, but weirded out by the politician stepbrother who shows up out of the blue. 33:53 - In the second episode of "Touch Your Heart" (진심이 닿다), Yoo InNa and Lee DongWook's characters are learning more about each other and developing a respectful relationship. It is definitely full of kdrama tropes, but we are liking it so far. If you want to watch the original Ghana chocolate commercial, click here. Judy thought Ghana chocolates weren't a thing anymore, but apparently they're still around! 44:34 - "Possessed" (빙의) is an OCN drama starring Go JoonHee and Song SaeByeok. This episode establishes some rules about seeing spirits, which may make it difficult to use the psychic's powers to actually solve any crime. The detective is so thoughtful and considerate that we're liking him more and more. Digressions: 1:10 - Teresa has betrayed her Horde roots in "World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth" 2:54 - "HOMECOMING: A film by Beyonce" 4:17 - "The Death of Stalin" 41:56 - Are hugs a Canadian thing? Some Korean terms: 파김치: [pa-kim-chi] kimchi made with green onion ("pa") 붕어빵: [boong-uh-ppang] koi-shaped bread filled with sweet red beans; popular street food in Korea. Audio credits: Glenn Stafford, Neal Acree, Sam Cardon, Clint Bajakian, David Arkenstone and Jason Hayes - “World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth” – “Before the Storm” Beyonce – “Homecoming: The Live Album” – “Welcome” Please send any questions, comments or suggestions on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (@kdramamyeyesout) or e-mail us (kdramamyeyesout(at)gmail.com). It's time to check out the kdrama selection of spring 2019! Digressions: 1:34 - "The Girl on the Train" 2:04 - "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra 4:49 - First up is "Legal High" (리갈하이) from JTBC. It's a comedy (?) starring Jin Goo and Seo EunSoo as two lawyers who are conplete opposites, but must work together to win cases. Jin Goo plays a smarmy golddigger, who is completely different from his beloved character from "Descendants of the Sun". 20:45 - "Romance is a Bonus Book" (로맨스는 별책부록) is from TVN, starring Lee NaYoung and Lee JongSuk. Lee NaYoung gave us all of the feels as a dejected woman at the end of her rope, and Lee JongSuk plays her old childhood friend who's been repressing his feelings for her. Trust us when we say that it's way better than the sparse description available on Netflix. Screw Cinderella! 41:49 - Fans of "Goblin" were looking forward to Yoo InNa and Lee DongWook's reunion in "Touch Your Heart" (진심이 닿다), another TVN drama. Judy was suspicious that this was a money grab using the two actors' popularity, but was pleasantly surprised by the humour and the cast of secondary characters. Next week, we'll be talking about "He Is Psychometric" (사이코메트리 그 녀석), "Radiant" (눈이 부시게) and "Haechi" (해치). In this episode, Judy and Linda finally get to talk about episodes 15 and 16 of "Goblin: The Lonely and Great God" (쓸쓸하고 찬란하신 도깨비), starring Gong Yoo, Kim GoEun, Lee DongWook and Yoo InNa. Brace yourselves for some rants. Robert contributes another multilingual pun. Judy and Linda can't figure out how Euntak (Kim GoEun) regains her memories. Judy wants to reiterate the importance of knowing how to park your car on hills safely. How come Euntak gets to refuse the Grim Reaper's tea? Why doesn't Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) come into the teahouse to bid farewell to Sunny (Yoo InNa)? How did Euntak make her way to Quebec again in her second life? How? What? Why? All of these questions detract from the romance and satisfaction we're supposed to be feeling from the finale, which is too bad. Some Korean terms: 사투리: [sa-too-ri] provincial accent. 개딸: [geh-ddal] "dog"+"daughter". 정화수: [jung-hwa-soo] according to Naver dictionary, this is well water drawn early in the morning, used to pray or to make herbal medicine. 허무하다: [huh-moo-ha-da] feeling of emptiness and futility; how Judy and Linda felt at the finale of this drama. 네팔: [ne-pal] the country Nepal; also homonym for "four arms". If you couldn't hear Robert very well, here's the pun he uses to torture Judy at the beginning of the episode: "What country has four arms?" "Nepal." Next week, we are discussing our first impressions of "Saimdang: Light's Diary", "Missing Nine", "Rebel: Thief of the People" and "Tomorrow with You". Along with "Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo", these dramas are candidates to continue our podcast. You get two KDMEO episodes this week! Today's episode covers episodes 13 and 14 of "Goblin: The Lonely and Great God" (쓸쓸하고 찬란하신 도깨비), starring Gong Yoo, Kim GoEun, Lee DongWook and Yoo Inna. Judy and Linda think it's poor strategy for Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) to use Euntak (Kim GoEun) as bait for Eyeball Professor. Judy goes a bit mad, when Robert sneaks up on the recording with a multilingual pun. Linda wants Korean listeners to try the dal.komm sausage thingy and then give us a review. Some Korean terms: 비녀: [bee-nyuh] hair stick. 처녀귀신: [chuh-nyuh-gwee-shin] virgin (female) ghost; usually wearing white hanbok and long black hair draped over face. 무: [moo] homonym for "nothingness" and "radish". 계란: [gye-ran] egg. If you couldn't hear Robert's multilingual pun very well, here it is: "What did the Korean bus driver say to the egg?" "Gye-ran (get on)." This is why Judy hates puns. What did you think of the Eyeball Professor's demise? Did you cry as much as we did when Kim Shin died? Were you as annoyed as we were by episode 14? This week, Judy and Linda talk about episodes 11 and 12 of "Goblin: The Lonely and Great God" (쓸쓸하고 찬란하신 도깨비), starring Gong Yoo, Kim GoEun, Lee DongWook and Yoo Inna. Judy gets quite frustrated with Euntak (Kim GoEun) and her lack of self-preservation. It's like watching the Animaniacs segment featuring Buttons and Mindy. Linda was scared of Park Joongheon (aka Eyeball Professor) and his freaky purple tongue and bruised fingers. Some Korean terms: 홍시: [hong-shi] super ripe and soft persimmons that you eat like a pudding. 못났다: [mot-nat-da] equivalent of "(You're) pathetic." 내 눈에 흙이 들어가도: [neh-noon-eh-heuk-ee-deu-ruh-ga-do] Korean equivalent of "over my dead body"; literally "even if dirt gets in my eyes". 반장: [ban-jang] class rep. 죽을려고 환장했니: [jook-eul-lyuh-go-hwan-jang-het-nee] "Are you crazy enough to want to die?"; why Sunny (Yoo Inna) says this to a bunch of peach blossoms is anyone's guess. 회사: [hwe-sa] company. Sorry for the late upload! We just switched editing programs and are still getting used to it. Did you find the Eyeball Professor impressive as a villain? Would you work for a company whose chairman prescribes a name for your unborn child? Was Dukhwa (Yook SungJae) possessed by the god the whole time or no?
