The real Arturo Sandoval was born in Cuba, defected to America with the help of his friend Dizzy Gillespie, and became one of the foundational figures in Afro-Cuban jazz. By the way, he was recently knighted by the King of Spain. Le 19 août 1942, à l'aube, plus de 6 000 hommes, pour la majorité des Canadiens mais aussi des commandos britanniques, américains et quelques Français, débarquent sur les plages de Dieppe en Normandie. L'opération porte un nom, Jubilee. C'est un raid d'envergure, le plus grand depuis Dunkerque. Officiellement, il s'agit de tester les défenses allemandes, de saisir des renseignements, détruire des infrastructures. Mais c'est aussi et surtout une répétition générale, une sorte de brouillon sanglant pour le jour encore lointain où les alliés tenteront de libérer la France. Mais à Dieppe, tout tourne au désastre. À 5h15 du matin, les troupes débarquent en plein jour sur les plages étroites, encadrées par des falaises. Les défenses allemandes sont bien plus solides que prévues. Les chars sont bloqués dans les galets, l'infanterie clouée au sol, la couverture aérienne insuffisante, l'effet de surprise absent. En quelques heures, l'opération tourne à la boucherie. Plus de 3600 hommes tués, blessés ou capturés, soit près de 60% des effectifs. Les Canadiens paient le prix le plus lourd. C'est un choc national pour le Canada, une blessure qui ne s'effacera jamais. Alors pourquoi ce souvenir de Dieppe ? Parce qu'on y a appris ! On a compris que le débarquement frontal sur un port était suicidaire, que les plages devaient être mieux préparées, que la logistique, la coordination interarmée, le renseignement devaient être repensé de fond en comble. Alors Dieppe n'est pas un échec inutile, c'est un avertissement payé dans le sang. Quand les alliés débarqueront en Normandie 2 ans plus tard, ils n'arriveront pas sur un port, ils créeront le leur, ils auront une maîtrise aérienne totale, des forces coordonnées et une stratégie nourrie de l'expérience de Dieppe.
