Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 16, 2022 is: sanguine • SANG-gwin • adjective Sanguine means "confidently optimistic." // The young CEO is sanguine about the struggling company's future. See the entry > Examples: "Mystifyingly, the Tony-nominated actress was never invited to audition for the 2020 Broadway revival of … 'West Side Story.' But given the way things worked out, [Ariana DeBose]—who was cast in Spielberg's movie shortly afterward—is pretty sanguine about the slight. 'I think everything happens for a reason,' she says. 'That was not my blessing. That was somebody else's blessing.'" — Sara Stewart, The New York Post, 8 Dec. 2021 Did you know? If you're the sort of cheery soul who always looks on the bright side no matter what happens, you have a sanguine personality. Sanguine is the name of one of the temperaments that ancient and medieval scholars believed was caused by an abundance of one of the four humors. It comes from sanguineus—Latin for "of or relating to blood" or "bloody"—and over centuries has had meanings ranging from "bloodthirsty" and "bloodred" to "confidently optimistic."

Sang-woo instead stabs himself in the neck, and asks Gi-hun to take care of his mother before dying. Gi-hun is returned to Seoul with a bank card to access the prize money, but discovers his own mother has died. A year later, Gi-hun remains traumatized and has not touched his prize money. He receives an invitation card from his gganbu, and finds Oh Il-nam on his deathbed. Il-nam reveals he created the game to entertain bored ultra-rich people like himself. He chose games he played as a child, and participated in Gi-hun's group out of nostalgia. As they talk, Il-nam wagers with Gi-hun on whether an unconscious man lying on a street corner will be helped before midnight. The man is saved, and Il-nam dies shortly after. Gi-hun retrieves Sae-byeok's brother and has him looked after by Sang-woo's mother, also giving them a share of the prize money. As Gi-hun travels to the airport to reconnect with his daughter in Los Angeles, he sees the same game recruiter playing ddakji with another desperate player, but manages only to get that player's invitation card. He calls the card's number before boarding his plane, demanding to know who is running the games. He is curtly ordered to get on the plane, but he ends the call and returns to the airport terminal.JOIN Inspired Disorder +PLUS Today! You Might Know Her From Clue, American Hustle, Election, Police Academy 2 and 4, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Wayne's World, Valley Girl, Sliver, Wicked Stepmother, Smile, They All Laughed, and Apocalypse Now. We got to grill Colleen about all things Clue including going up against Jennifer Jason Leigh, Madonna, and Demi Moore for the role of sexy maid Yvette. Colleen regaled us with stories of cutting her teeth in films like Apocalypse Now, adding “producer” to her list of talents, and how the tragic murder of Hollywood starlet Dorothy Stratten cast a cloud on one of her meatiest roles in Peter Bogdanovich's They All Laughed. It was all of that, plus how her hair color changed the kinds of roles she went in for, working with Bette Davis on the legend's final film, and how she would rewrite the ending of sexual thriller Sliver if she had her druthers. Do we think you'll enjoy this romp of an interview? The movie featured the late Dorothy Stratten (Playboy Playmate turned actress. She was dating Bogdanovich at the time, was murdered by her ex boyfriend, Paul Snider shortly after the film wrapped. Bogdanovich later married her sister, Louise Stratten). Bogdanovich took the movie into his own hands and tried to independently distribute They All Laughed with his own funds. The movie tanked, but is now hailed as a classic.  Bob Fosse made a movie about Dorothy Stratten's murder called Star 80 (in 1983, just three years after her murder).  Wicked Stepmother opposite Bette Davis, who left the film after a week or two. Starred opposite Barbra Streisand in one funny scene in Funny Lady (1975) Dancing to “Suzie Q” in Apocalypse Now as a playmate Was a champion for Dean Tavoularis Colleen was one of the only women in Die Hard with a Vengeance  Starred opposite a dead Bruce Lee in Game of Death (movie was made after he died so she just starred opposite a bunch of Bruce Lee stand-ins) Ang Lee cast Colleen in The Ice Storm based on Game of Death, but she doesn't really appear

This month's guest has wasted little time making the most of his growing career. It hasn't been that long since he was literally living out of his car on the streets of Nashville. His debut single shot to #1 in November 2018. His 2nd single also went to number 1 and as I put together this podcast, his 3rd single has cracked the top 10. He's also won awards (2021 CMA New Male Artist). Done TV shows (Dancing With The Stars). Written a children's book (My Voice Is a Trumpet). Had a couple kids (Naomi and Aayden). Sang with Elton John (The Lockdown Sessions). Started a production company (JAB Entertainment). All while reminding anyone who brings it up that country music isn't, never has been nor ever should be a space reserved for white artists only. The lengths it took to set up this interview is a good way to introduce you to Jimmie Allen. It took almost six months before we were able to connect. Once, I managed to pin him down while he was en route to a concert right the day after one of his appearances on Dancing With The Stars. And it was going great until he hit a bad cell service area, and our next chance didn't come along for another month. That he never gave up on doing this interview- which is such a minor thing in his life – says a lot about who he is.  And that drive, that thing that keeps him daring to dream some really big, challenging dreams while still making sure to connect with some schlep DJ with a podcast...?  I think it can all be traced back to challenges he first had to face as a young kid, and the people who helped him overcome them. You put that kind experience together with real talent as a singer and a songwriter, and you've got something special.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action” - Peter Drucker.  As 2021 comes to a close, it's useful to reflect on what worked, what didn't and how your industry evolved.  In this episode, you'll hear from Sang Valte, Senior UX Director at international design agency Jellyfish, and Design Standards Board Member at General Assembly, about how he reviews his year and how the UX changed in 2021. Questions to ask yourself for your end of year review: What have you gained in your health & wealth? Where have you lost? Sang thinks of wealth in relationships, friendships and knowledge, and health in terms of financial health, mental health and physical health. What have you done to further your skills in your career this year? Good UX designers must work to remove bias from their thinking to truly understand the users they make products for, says Sang. To sharpen critical thinking and dull bias, his recommended reads are Noise by Daniel Kahnemann and Think Again by Adam Grant. What have you done to build relationships for your career? Build relationships before you need them. When the pandemic hit in early 2020, Sang had a job offer, which suddenly fell through. He spent 5 months applying for jobs fruitlessly, and landed a dream opportunity when he reached out to someone he met at a design conference.  How has your industry changed in 2021? In your end of year review, think beyond your experience and think about how the sector evolved. Reflecting on the trends will help you capitalise on them in future. For example, Sang says that the UX field now has more senior women in it than ever before, and that there is a new interest in diverse thought.  If you want 2022 to be the year when you take your career to the next level, apply for Sophia's Break Into Tech Program.

In Episode 236 of District of Conservation, Gabriella speaks with Fairfax City Councilman Sang Yi about yesterday's City Council vote to institute a stormwater utility fee, a.k.a. rain tax, by a 4-2 vote. The proposal will cost city taxpayers $4.48 million in 2022. Yi was one of two council members to oppose it. Councilman Sang Yi was first elected to office in May 2018. He was the top vote-getter of any city council candidate in his first race and his 2020 re-election bid. On the Council, Sang is a strong advocate for the most efficient use of our taxpayer dollars, and is a leading voice for the preservation of the City's character and family-friendly environment. He understands that as a Councilman, he represents the residents to City Hall, and not the other way around. Sang has a deep gratitude and respect for the American Dream, which motivated him to dedicate his life to public service in pursuit of growing opportunities for others. An experienced government professional, Sang currently serves as a senior congressional aide focused on oversight of our U.S. government at the highest levels to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse. As immigrants from Seoul, South Korea, Sang and his parents moved to the Washington metropolitan area in the 1980s. Sang and his wife, Sarah, moved to the City of Fairfax to find a home where they could raise their children, enjoy a sense of community, and still be within a reasonable distance to work. They are blessed to be the parents of two young children, both of whom were born as City residents. #121: Identify the Right Clients with Value-Based Decision-Making, with Ashlee Sang

Deliberate Freelancer

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 2, 2021 35:06

On today's episode, Ashlee Sang talks about how you can work with purpose-driven solopreneurs and service providers. She also explains how you can base everything you do in your freelance businesses around a set of core values—and how that will help you make decisions, find the right clients and grow your business. Ashlee lives in Central Illinois. She owns Ashlee Sang Consulting, where she works with visionary founders who want to grow their impact and their business in a way that's rooted in values and propelled by purpose. Before doing brand messaging strategy and consulting, she worked with a variety of nonprofit organizations, including a human rights education non-governmental organization (NGO) in Senegal and a local branch of Habitat for Humanity. The common thread has been sharing messages that matter. Ashlee began working with purpose-driven founders after learning about the conscious consumerism movement. She wants to work with businesses that have a mission and impact in the world. Ashlee always keeps that goal in mind as she selects clients. She has taken plenty of projects in the past that didn't align with her values and she realized she always dreaded the work and the client. Now she focuses on attraction marketing—walking the talk and standing up for her values as a way to set herself apart. Before living in Illinois, Ashlee lived in Senegal for four years. Moving there was the most formative decision of her life. She was studying anthropology, French and linguistics as a study-abroad student and ended up meeting her future husband. So, after graduation, she moved to Senegal and landed a job with an NGO. In Senegal, she learned a lot about herself, about interpersonal and organizational communications, and about viewing different cultures from various perspectives. The years in Senegal shaped how she now views the world and supports her goal to provide empathetic accountability because she has met and spoken to so many different types of people. For example, it has helped her develop clients' audience personas because she can better get into other people's heads and hearts. Ashlee believes in making value-based decisions. She has a set of core values that she operates from. The list includes intentionality, progress, open-mindedness. They guide who she works with as well as her offerings. Making value-based decisions impacts both your marketing and your operations. For example, it helps with knowing what to post on social media, who to pitch to, how much to charge and who to hire. Ashlee recommends sitting down and creating a list of values and periodically reevaluating that list. This way of working supports prioritization and hedges “shiny object syndrome.” It shows up in the everyday work and in the big decisions. The benefit of basing decisions on your values is alignment: If it feels better for you, it feels better for your clients. Ashlee supports the nonprofit 1% for the Planet and highlights this on her website. As part of this, she has committed to giving 1% of her revenue to an environmental nonprofit of her choice. She also lists her brand values on her website, but living your values is more important than just listing them. When you take the time to do this foundational work—your personal vision, your business mission, your list of values—it makes decision-making throughout your life and business easier.   Biz Bite: Turn Off Email Notifications   Resources: Support Deliberate Freelancer at Buy Me a Coffee.
