Give your kids enough that they can do anything, but not so much that they can do nothing. That Warren Buffett line is where this one starts. You worked hard so your family could have a good life. So how do you keep the life you built from softening the kids you love? This is the first episode of Good Questions, where we pull the best questions dads have asked across ten years of podcasts and member-only conversations, and stack the answers worth keeping. Four dads take this one on: Mike McCarthy on being honest with your kids about your wealth and what the trust will and will not do, Chad Willardson on raising abundance-minded kids instead of scarcity-minded ones, Scott Donnell on why you should let them waste some of their own money, and Dan Miller on how early kids should start working (his answer involves a rebuilt motorcycle and a 10-year-old). IN THIS EPISODE: The Buffett rule: enough to do anything, not so much they do nothing What to actually tell your kids about your money, and what the trust should gate Overpaying your kids on purpose: $50 book reports and a 12-year-old's dog-walking business "Let them buy the Mountain Dew": why a wasted $30 now beats a wasted $3,000 later The $410 motorcycle rebuild that taught a 10-year-old to earn what he rides Why kids learn economics from life experiences, not from sitting in seats
I'm from Los Angeles. So when I picked up Dr. Terrell Winder's Shameless: The Making of Black Gay Identities in LA, it read like a love letter to a home I'm watching change—and a map of how young Black gay men build family, selfhood, and joy inside all that change anyway. This week, Dr. Winder—sociologist and urban ethnographer at UC Santa Barbara—pulls up to the classroom to teach us unspoiling: his framework for refusing shame and rejecting the burden of stigma outright, no matter what it costs. We get into the affirming spaces that keep our babies alive and why they're under attack right now; why intersectionality can't keep being told to wait its turn; and what Noah's Arc's first-ever Emmy nomination means in a season when Black and Black gay stories are being pulled off shelves.Because when you take these spaces away, Dr. Winder is clear about what we lose: lives.Go get the book, sit with it, and then go build a room where somebody can put their burden down.About the guestDr. Terrell J. A. Winder is Associate Professor of Sociology at UC Santa Barbara. A Baltimore native, he earned his B.A. in Comparative Ethnic Studies from Columbia and his Ph.D. in Sociology from UCLA (2017). His research spans race and ethnicity, sexuality and sexual health, qualitative methods, and education.Key ideas & theoryUnspoiling — Dr. Winder's framework: a stigma response that centers the stigmatized person rather than the comfort of the stigmatizer; refusing shame instead of managing it.Spoiled identity / stigma — Erving Goffman's foundational concept, and the classic responses of passing and covering that Dr. Winder argues break down for people carrying more than one stigma at once.Intersectional stigma & "intersectional recovery" — holding race, sexuality, and gender together rather than deferring one for later; recovering the full selves of figures history flattened."Visibility is survival" — his argument that ethnography documents threatened histories and everyday Black LGBTQ life.People mentionedErving Goffman — sociologist, Stigma and the "spoiled identity."Dr. Marcus Anthony Hunter — sociologist and chair of African American Studies at UCLA; credited with first posting the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter (August 2012); the BLM movement/network was later co-founded by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi. Co-author with Dr. Winder of "Space, Place, and Urban Future."Bayard Rustin — Black gay civil rights strategist, chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington.George Washington Carver — scientist cited as an example of a flattened, partially-told legacy.Patrik-Ian Polk — creator of Noah's Arc.Organizations & spacesBetter Brothers Los Angeles / The Truth Awards. Native Son.Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen (Issa Rae's LA spot) and Bricks & Scones (Larchmont). Media & cultureNoah's ARC — Patrik-Ian Polk's groundbreaking series, the first scripted show centering Black gay men; Noah's ARC: The Movie (the 20th-anniversary reunion) earned a 2026 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Choreography, the franchise's first-ever Television Academy recognition.Pose, Insecure — referenced in conversation and This or That.My Best Friend Rodney — Rodney Chester's interview podcast.Anita Baker & Luther Vandross — the This or That showdown.Further reading — Dr. Winder's scholarshipShameless: The Making of Black Gay Identities in LA (NYU Press, 2026)."Unspoiling Identity: An Intersectional Expansion of Stigma Response Strategies" (Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, 2023)."Visibility Is Survival: The Chocolate Maps of Black Gay Life in Urban Ethnography."Marcus Anthony Hunter & Terrell J. Send us Fan MailA great fight can still leave a bad taste when the scorecards come in, and we start right there with a shout-out to our friend Ginny Fuchs and her gritty rematch with Adelaide Ruiz. We talk through what made it a real back-and-forth brawl, why the judging felt impossible to defend, and how one “criminal” card can change the whole story fans take away from fight night. Then we zoom out to the bigger boxing weekend: Tyson Fury's latest outing, whether he's slowing down, and why the sport can't afford to keep stalling on Fury vs Anthony Joshua. We get into AJ's early knockdowns, the confidence and theatrics that followed, and the uncomfortable reality that heavyweight timing matters more than ever when miles and damage start showing up at once.Errol Spence Jr vs Tim Tszyu becomes the clearest example of the episode's theme: activity is everything. We unpack how layoffs, age, and reaction speed show up round by round, what Spence's retirement talk signals, and what it might mean for PBC's direction as stars fade and new ones struggle to break through. We also recap the Zuffa MSG experience at the Hulu Theater, including ticket giveaway rumors, late main event frustration, Hitchins' jab, Berlanga stoppage weirdness, and what Dana White hinted about Tank Davis vs Shakur Stevenson. If you like smart boxing talk with real opinions and real laughs, subscribe, share the episode with a friend, and leave a review telling us the fight you want made next.THE SPAR-INN ON YOUTUBE

Before streaming playlists, algorithms and music in the cloud, there were MP3 folders, custom media-player skins, painfully slow downloads and trance tracks that seemed to last forever. Episode 007 takes us back to the turn of the millennium for over 90 minutes of late-90s and early-2000s trance classics. This was the sound of a scene becoming global: soaring melodies, rolling basslines, extended club mixes and records built to carry a dancefloor deep into the night. Featuring Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, Energy 52, Cygnus X, Transa, Mario Più, Balearic Bill, Spoiled & Zigo and more, Millennium Trance Transmission captures the years when trance was moving from record bags and import CDs onto home computers, burned discs and carefully organised MP3 collections. Expect the Nalin & Kane remix of Café Del Mar, Tiësto's Sparkles, Cygnus X's Superstring, Alibi's Eternity and a collection of deeper turn-of-the-millennium favourites from 1998 to 2001. What was the first trance track—or the first MP3—you remember downloading? Explore the complete Tez's House Club Classics Archive, including full mixes and tracklists, on Mixcloud. Jason Lloyd joins Ken and Anthony and dodges a direct LeBron prediction, but notes Cleveland would've likely gotten a firmer signal by now if he wasn't seriously considering a return, drawing on his experience covering the 2010, 2014, and 2018 sagas. Lloyd praises the Cavs front office for making Donovan Mitchell comfortable enough to sign two extensions and pushes back on fan negativity, borrowing LeBron's old line that he "spoiled" everyone in Cleveland, arguing Mitchell is unfairly measured against the greatest player of his generation and the magic of the 2016 title run. He also says a Francisco Lindor reunion sounds fun in theory but isn't grounded in financial reality, and weighs in on Jared Verse, crediting the trade as well-timed given Myles Garrett's age and run-defense limitations, while cautioning it's still just July optimism talking.
Jason Lloyd joins Ken and Tone to discuss why Donovan Mitchell's extension is a major victory for the Cavaliers. They analyze the impact of LeBron James' legacy on fan expectations and debate whether the team needs to make a formal pitch to bring James back. The discussion also explores Browns rookie Jared Verse and his potential to provide the leadership some felt Myles Garrett lacked. 02:01 - Physique and confidence theories 05:24 - Jared Verse leadership potential 08:57 - Flacco vs Garrett leadership 14:07 - Jason Lloyd on LeBron James 20:02 - Mitchell extension impact 23:44 - Spoiled by LeBron's legacy 28:20 - Francisco Lindor return rumors 34:45 - Public free agency pitches 40:38 - Cavs potential LeBron pitch
