About 20 years ago, the Russian state began a large-scale operation to take control of Orthodox parishes all over Europe. Some of these had, over time, broken ties with the Moscow patriarchate. They're now the object of legal cases pitting the Russian Federation against local associations created to run these expatriate churches during the Soviet era. In April, a court in the French city of Nice ruled that a church and historic cemetery there rightfully belonged to Russia, rather than to the local cultural association. For some of its parishioners, seeing the French justice system side with the country waging war against Ukraine has been hard to accept. Descendants of the Russian tsars, on the other hand, welcome this decision. FRANCE 24's Elena Volochine reports.

This week the board of Prosper Portland votes to finalize a settlement for more than 20 people whose homes and businesses were destroyed in the name of urban renewal from the 1950s through the ’70s. The group of Black Portlanders fought for years to get to this point, and eventually filed a federal lawsuit arguing that the city of Portland, Emanuel Legacy Medical Center and Prosper Portland conspired to destroy a previously thriving Black neighborhood. The original financial settlement proposed to the Portland city council was $2 million. After testimony from a dozen community members recently, all 12 Portland city councilors voted to increase the amount to $8.5 million. As part of the settlement, the lawsuit will be dismissed, and the descendants will get financial and land retribution, in addition to other terms. We hear from plaintiffs Donna Marshall and Byrd, who led the research effort that culminated in this settlement, and from their lawyer Ed Johnson.

I have been a Rita Ora fan since she popped off with ‘Hot Right Now' back in 2012, so I am so excited to have her on the show today. Since then Rita has amassed over 10 billion global streams, had 13 Top 10 UK singles, four of which have gone number 1 and she hasn't stopped there, she's entertained us on the likes of ‘The X-Factor' and ‘The Masked Singer' and she's now tackling the acting world starring alongside Henry Cavill in the upcoming ‘Voltron' and Disney's ‘Descendants'. We talk about making mistakes, finding staying power, dealing with misogyny, owning her music and learning to work on her mental health. One of things I love most in this chat is when Rita chats about looking after her inner child which is a great reminder for us all to practice self love. Dove Cameron (Too Much, Descendants, Liv and Maddie) is an Emmy Award-winning actor and singer. Dove joins the Armchair Expert to discuss the origins of bloomers, realizing she was a stimulus addict at a very young age, and her fear of offending the gooey duck community. Dove and Dax talk about spending her formative years in India for months at a time, her first music gig singing in the children's ghost choir for Ryan Gosling's Halloween band, and recognizing as early as she can remember that her parents were meant to split. Dove explains not knowing she was an introvert until she was thrust into the public eye, growing up on TV while processing her father's death, and how helpful it would be if we all demystified our mental health.Follow Armchair Expert on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts.
