In the summer of 1972, Chiang Kai-shek vanished. He missed Double Ten parades. However, Madame Chiang (Soong Mei-ling), and the step-son she loathed (future president Chiang Ching-kuo) carried on as if all was well. There were no press leaks as the president of the Republic of China lay in a coma for six months. In this episode of Formosa Files, we uncover the cover-up, and tell you about an odd dinner where medical staff waited to pounce and revive the aging dictator. Plus, we meet Jeanette Kung: a cigar-smoking, men's clothing enthusiast who might today be a gay icon of some kind, except for the fact that she possessed an…um…“challenging personality.”SUPPORT the show by rating, commenting, liking, subscribing, and following on social media.
For some years, there have been suggestions that in the 1860s Tom Wills, Australia's first sports hero and the founder of the AFL, may have taken part in the massacres of Gayiri people in Central Queensland. Now, in a Guardian Australia investigation, Indigenous Affairs reporter Ella Archibald-Binge travels in search of the truth behind the allegations. In this two part special Full Story, she and Lorena Allam from UTS's Jumbunna Institute discuss how families on both sides of the conflict are reckoning with the truth of their ancestors' colonial past Warning: This episode contains historical records that use racist and offensive language, and descriptions of events that will be distressing to some.
Colonial pastoralist Major Logue is a figure of note in the city of Geraldton, Western Australia. But his diaries, written partly in code, reveal a dark and confronting chapter of Australia's past – a history that Yamatji people already know all too well. Descendants of some perpetrator families are now challenging what they call ‘colonial silence'. For them, truth-telling is real, personal and local. There are no guidelines or rulebooks, and it can lead to denial and indifference – but it can also be a liberation. In this two-part special Full Story, Guardian Australia's Indigenous affairs reporter Sarah Collard and Lorena Allam from UTS's Jumbunna Institute discuss decoding the truth behind Logue's diaries, and how descendants of colonial violence are coming together to heal from the horrors of the past Warning: This episode contains historical records that use racist and offensive language, and descriptions of events that will be distressing to some

About 20 years ago, the Russian state began a large-scale operation to take control of Orthodox parishes all over Europe. Some of these had, over time, broken ties with the Moscow patriarchate. They're now the object of legal cases pitting the Russian Federation against local associations created to run these expatriate churches during the Soviet era. In April, a court in the French city of Nice ruled that a church and historic cemetery there rightfully belonged to Russia, rather than to the local cultural association. For some of its parishioners, seeing the French justice system side with the country waging war against Ukraine has been hard to accept. Descendants of the Russian tsars, on the other hand, welcome this decision. FRANCE 24's Elena Volochine reports.

This week the board of Prosper Portland votes to finalize a settlement for more than 20 people whose homes and businesses were destroyed in the name of urban renewal from the 1950s through the ’70s. The group of Black Portlanders fought for years to get to this point, and eventually filed a federal lawsuit arguing that the city of Portland, Emanuel Legacy Medical Center and Prosper Portland conspired to destroy a previously thriving Black neighborhood. The original financial settlement proposed to the Portland city council was $2 million. After testimony from a dozen community members recently, all 12 Portland city councilors voted to increase the amount to $8.5 million. As part of the settlement, the lawsuit will be dismissed, and the descendants will get financial and land retribution, in addition to other terms. We hear from plaintiffs Donna Marshall and Byrd, who led the research effort that culminated in this settlement, and from their lawyer Ed Johnson.
